[Cooker] rc2: strange filesystem ext3
During installation of rc2 I formatted the partition with ext3. Installation was ok. But when I tried to boot to my extisting 9.0 partition I got an error like 'could not check filesystem on hdc9' (were I installed rc2). And I got no way to boot to 9.0. This also happened during installation of beta3 and rc1. The way I worked around with beta3 and rc1 was: I formatted the partitinon where I wanted to install by Acronis OS-Seletor for ext3. Another way was: to eliminate the partition wher beta3 resp. rc1 was installed from /etx/fstab in 9.0 and mount it manually. What could be the reason? Interesting may be: Acrinis partition expert shows the partition where rc2 is installed as fully used and no free space (really there are over 3 GB free). Any hint is appreciated. W. Kasberg

You assume that it's ext3 that's causing your problems, but in my experience, it's usually something hardware related. What options have you tried as far as enabling or disabling either or both apic and acpi? I did not try to change apic or apci. My current lilo.conf shows 'acpi=off'. I have to confess, I am not familiar with apic and/or apci or what is their influence. Could I simply change apic or apci on/off ? (Naturally change it in lilo.conf and then write a new lilo). At the moment I have the workaround: I have formatted the partition with AcronisOsSelector and then installed rc2 again. W. Kasberg
[Cooker] rc2: '.fonts.cache-1.TMP-nnnn' files on my HOME

[Cooker] RC1: localized OpenOffice1.0.2 not ocmplete
This should be a hint to Mandrake team: This hold at least for localization de_DE: No help-de is installed (the rpm is not on the CDs). Instead of spellchecking de_DE myspell de_CH is installed. Also no hyphenation-de is installed. Besides: The same happened with beta3 and also OOO1.0.1 with Mandrake9.0. Maybe this can be corrected at next or (at least) the final revision. I find it very good that Mandrake includes the newest software. W. Kasberg

OpenOffice.org requires a myspell, so you probably have one installed already, you might want to use Software Manager to search for myspell, and choose additional dictionaries. But, please remember that this is not a support list, and your post was not a bug report, but seems very much like a support question. There are more appropriate lists for that. Regards, Buchan Actually, I believe this *is* a bug. I've installed 9.0 final three times and each time spell checking in OpenOffice.org was broken until I manually installed a US English myspell (which newbies certainly wouldn't know to do). It doesn't seem likely that OO.o should have broken spell-checking intentionally. Maybe it's just a problem for US English installations. I'm not sure. This is also valid for german dictionary which is not installed automatically. Also german help files have to be installed manually. Hopefully this should be corrected with the next Mandrake edition (9.1 ?) The most serious aspect of this is that OO.o doesn't TELL the user that spelling is broken. I could set Autocheck to yes and it didn't complain, it just didn't do anything. I could manually order a spellcheck, and it didn't complain, it just didn't work (as if there were no spelling errors in the document, even if the document was all gibberish). Again, this definitely sounds like a bug to me. =) Regards, Rob Walter Kasberg --

[Cooker] beta3 install report (cups + XFree)
cups: on choosing to install cups printing system the installer asked to change to CD_1 but did not unmount/eject CD_2. Thus I had to cancel this action. After finishing the rest of the system installation I installed manually foomatics, cups a.s.o. and installed the apropiate printers with printerdrake. XFree: During install the installation of XFree failed (maybe resulting from the error on install of cups ?) But after the first boot of beta3 I could manually install and configure the xsystem without problems. boot floppy: crating a boot floppy did not succeed, but this is (hopefully) no problem since I am using a bootmanager. [Cooker] cups in beta2 does not print on HP LaserJet 6P
After installing cups and configuring for HP 6P the testpage ist printed correctly. But all applications don't print correctly (exepted OpenOffice 641). My feeling is that cups assumes HP 6P would be a postcript printer. After wasting a lot of time and paper I configured my printer to be a HP LaserJet 4. Now all works fine. Thus I assume a bug in cups-drivers. Besides: Printing on my color printer HP 990cxi works fine. W. Kasberg

Thanks for the quick reply! Am Montag 13 November 2000 11:38 schrieben Sie: Try one of the following things (I do not know whether all points really work exactly as described here): - Run CUPS and LPD in parallel by letting CUPS as is and installing the lpr and rhs-printfilters packages. Use "printerdrake -expert" or "printerdrake -lpr". In this case the LPD printing commands are "lpr-lpd", "lpq-lpd", "lprm-lpd", and "lpc-lpd". I succeded with this way (CUPS + LPD). Your hint "printerdrake -lpr" helped me to build a seperate lpr-printer with the correspondend rhs-printfilter. - CUPS can emulate LPD, see http://localhost:631/sam.html or http://www.cups.org/sam.html (CUPS-LPD mini-daemon). I did not succeed with the CUPS-MINI-daemon. Maybe I did not set up correctly. But I have it working with the first way. - Run only LPD by removing CUPS, installing lpr and rhs-printfilters and using "printerdrake -expert" or "printerdrake -lpr". I did not try this, it would be the worst solution to my oppinion. - If you want to use the "printtool", it is in the contribs. Till "W.Kasberg" wrote: Mandrake7.2 came up with cups printing system.
