Good idea. Its very easy, with current default install, to corrupt your
existing windows when playing around with wine.

The point is Mandrake wants to make money, therefore they need bigger install
base, therefore they need to make windows users transfer to linux, therefore
what keeps windows users from using linux, therefore try to imagine what do
we need to add or change.

I didnt succeed with urpmi because you have to tell it where to search for
hdlist which is called syntesysblablabla. I am not clearvoyant and didnt know
this. And why should i know this. It is something the program could do. We
are talking here about those little annoying things that make windows users
say linux sucks.

I know, i know but theres allways missing something. Like showing/setting your
nickname, complete iconset, filetransfer. Sourseforge.net search for msn. I
tried a lot of them. I only found one with look and features like m$ msn
named AMSN. So linux has the advantage of having a lot of programs for this
service. But most of them are not complete. A windows user, used to m$ msn
just wants to be able to fully use this function. He does not want all this
alpha, beta incomplete stuff. This still is a problem with a lot of linux end
user programs.

I am still trying to convince my kids to use linux. They dont buy it. They
learned how to use windows and do not want to put much effort in learning how
to work with linux. To fool them, programs must resemble those of windows and
should not need ( much ) configuration. So the problem is, because they are
used to windows linux has to be even more user friendly ( and faster ).
Nevertheless i agree with you mandrake has don a lot and things are getting
better rapidly.

Most windows users and future linux users dont read manuals. This is just an
example. A lot of programs need a finishing touch. Preferences should not
have to be set ( cdburning programs), features complete ( msn messenger
programs ). Desktop users want to work with there pc and when it is linux
they want it to work as easy as windows.

[Cooker] 9.0 install - observations

2002-10-01 Thread Wim Horst

Look and Feel = Great, this is again a better distro then before

I did expert install dutch (nl) localisation, desktop kde not gnome, some
servers (samba, squid)

1) drakconf did not start, it complaint about line 423 in /usr/sbin/drakconf,
i removed this line and it worked, think its a localisation problem, because
english install doesnt have this problem.

2) ispell dutch dictionary (kword) not installed.

3) I had to set openoffice language to use myspell, so it will use dutch
dictionary

4) I dit server installation but drakwizard not installed

5) shorewall: i use static ip for one directly (crosscable) connected w98pc.
I want samba to work.

Had to do the following in /etc/shorewall/rules:
ACCEPT fw loc udp 137,138,139 -
ACCEPT fw loc tcp 137,138,139 -
ACCEPT net fw udp 631 -
ACCEPT net fw tcp 22,631,6588 -
ACCEPT loc fw udp 631,137,138,139 -
ACCEPT loc fw tcp 22,631,6588,137,138,139 -

I think the first two lines need to be there because i dont use a hub.

Had to do the following in /etc/shorewall/interfaces:
net eth0detect
loc eth1192.168.1.255

This last line could have bin setup by the wizard, it is necessary when the
server is started before the local machine.

6) lisa lanbrowsing in konqueror still (2 years) not working. After a long
time it sometimes does get filenames but first caracter of filename is lost.

7) applet ksysguard does not accept connections.

2) ispell dutch dictionary (kword) not installed.

3) I had to set openoffice language to use myspell, so it will use dutch

4) I dit server installation but drakwizard not installed

5) shorewall: i use static ip for one directly (crosscable) connected w98pc.
I want samba to work.

Had to do the following in /etc/shorewall/rules:

ACCEPT loc fw udp 631,137,138,139 -

I think the first two lines need to be there because i dont use a hub.

Had to do the following in /etc/shorewall/interfaces:

This last line could have bin setup by the wizard, it is necessary when the

6) lisa lanbrowsing in konqueror still (2 years) not working. After a long
time it sometimes does get filenames but first caracter of filename is lost.

7) applet ksysguard does not accept connections.
