[Cooker] KDM is going crazy

2002-10-18 Thread crazy mand
Hi,
Yesterday, a power outage shutted down my computer,
and when it booted up, KDB was going crazy, I couldn't
login with any user, even with root. Now, I have to
use gdm instead. At start, KDM showed tons of users in
its user icon space, I saw gpm, mysql, postfix users,
which are for certain programs only. Anyone know how
KDM authenticates with the system? I can login with
console or gdm.

Thanks for any hint.

[Cooker] Mandrake/Kernel/GCC?

2002-10-14 Thread crazy mand

This is the first time in my linux experience with a
frozen linux box in an official released version.

I tried to show my little bro how to build a
linux-from-scratch box using Mandrake 9.0.
Supprisingly enough, during the step of building gcc
3.2, it froze producibly. I downloaded and installed
a vanilla 2.4.19 but it didn't help. I also installed
gcc 2.9.6 instead of default gcc 3.2, but that didn't
help either.

Has anyone encountered the same problem?

My box is Abit KG-7, 1.4GHz, 512 RDRAM.

Thanks!

 I checked /etc/X11/XftConfig and it looks fine.
 I also ran the ttmkfdir
 on the font dirs with truetype fonts.

 One new thing I noticed is that root can run
 gnome-terminal with
 GDK_USE_XFT=1, but there are still error
 messages:

 Don't try to use gnome-terminal to check your
 fonts, it uses non standard
 technique to get them.. Use gedit instead..

 Try running :
 gconftool-2 -u /desktop/gnome/interface/font_name
 /desktop/gnome/interface/monospace_font_name

 to reset fonts to known working names..

 I tried the same tests with gedit:
 When root does it:
 [root@triumph root]# export GDK_USE_XFT=1
 [root@triumph root]# gedit
 [root@triumph root]# export GDK_USE_XFT=0
 [root@triumph root]# gedit

 Regular user:
 $ export GDK_USE_XFT=1
 $ gedit

 ** (gedit:12167): WARNING **: Cannot open font
 file for font Arial 10

 You didn't unset font settings as I told you to
 do..

 I did but there was no effect.
 $ gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/interface
 *** monospace_font_name = Monospace 10
  toolbar_style = both
  gtk_key_theme = Default
 *** font_name = Sans 10
  cursor_blink_time = 1200
  menus_have_tearoff = false
  cursor_blink = true
  use_custom_font = false
  toolbar_icon_size = (no value set)
  menus_have_icons = true
  can_change_accels = (no value set)
  accessibility = false
  status_bar_meter_on_right = false
  gtk_theme = Default
  menubar_detachable = false
  toolbar_detachable = true

 Any other ideas? =-(
 There must be an easier way to deal with and get
 nice fonts for linux.

Is that a PCI or ISA card?

 Hi all,

 On the weekend I just tried switching from my

 Mandrake isn't auto detecting any new hardware. Is
 this correct ? I
 tried changing it with Harddrake but it did not
 configure the system
 properly so I manually change the settings in
 modules.conf and it is now
 work.

[Cooker] Xine and DeCSS

2002-09-29 Thread crazy mand

Could anyone give me a reason why DeCSS plugin from
http://debianlinux.net/captain_css.html   for XINE
does not work with xine binary in RC3? It works with
8.2 and 9.0 beta version. Is this the problem with
binary compatibility between gcc 9.2.x and gcc 3.x?

What gcc version was used to compile xine in 9.0 RC3?

Thanks

[Cooker] Why is Mandrake so sensitive with CDROM/DVD-ROM

2002-09-09 Thread crazy mand

I used Tyan CD-RW 20/14/40 to install Mandrake (betas,
RCs).. alway gave me errors everytime; I've had
clicked ignore to keep the installations going. I
used the same drive to install Redhat 7.3 everything
went fine. I replaced the drive with TEAC cdrom drive,
then the installation goes smoothly with Mandrake.
Could anyone explain why it happens that way. Don't
tell me my drive is bad. After installation, I can use
it any way I want.

[Cooker] KDE desktop went crazy with RC2

2002-09-09 Thread crazy mand

In my previous post, I mentioned that installer failed
to install some packages; I had to click Ignore to
go on. I've just installed mozilla using
Kmenu-Configuration-Packages-Install Software;
After installation, I tried to use
Kmenu-Internet-WWW-Mozilla to bring it up, but the
menu went crazy. Every Icon was replaced with generic
Icon. Icons of application shotcut on the panel were
replaced with KDE generic icon; When I clicked on any
of those, I couldn't open the apps.

It seems to me that Install Software breaks Mandrake
Menu b/c I just installed ssh using Install Software
again, and that broke the Menu.

[Cooker] 9.0 RC1 problems

2002-09-04 Thread crazy mand

- Fresh install with default selected.
- Can't install mozilla 1.1 during installation error
raised.
- After installation, KDE login screen crashed, and
went to console login mode. I modified
/etc/sysconfig/desktop to use gnome and restarted; It
came up ok this time.
- Tried to install mozilla 1.1; the packet is in CD3,
which was never asked during installation
- Logged out to gnome login screen, but was unable to
type anything into the box, If I click something like
System, Language on the bottom of the screen, then I
was able to type afterward. Logging in took so long (I
guess for my DHCP network setting, I'm using cable).
- Logged again, and tried to shutdown using shutdown
option from GNOME login screen. Sometime, it hung
forever, or stopping with error Shutting down dm:
Failed message.

Beta1,2,3,4 worked fine on my machine before. My
configuration is

Sony 200ES
Radeon 7000 64MB SDRAM
Abit KG-7
512MB RAM
ATT cable connection
Pioneer 16X DVD
