[Cooker] [Bug 5326] [kernel] kernel fails to load usb

2003-10-15 Thread [tmb]

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-15-10 23:31 ---
No need to try the other ones ;-)

It's to _way_ to late for "default kernel that ships with 9.2",
as the isos are already sent, and probably half way through the
manufacturing process my now...
But Juan is working on an Update kernel, that will be in updates
when it's considered ready enough...

But of course you have the choice of running my kernels for now ;-),
as they are in contribs...

So this bug is theoretically fixed, but I won't close it until it works
with the main mdk kernels...

On my acer aspire 1700+ with MDK 9.2rc1 the usb ports don´t work. I had this
problem with MDK 9.1 too.lsusb returns a nice 0x0 even with my webcam and
speedtouch modem plugged in. Adding pci usb ports has the same result. I know
these ports are from VIA,and they work perfectly with suse live cd 8.2 (That
uses kernel 2.4.20). I think it could be a bus system problem, as in MDK 9.1
sound did't work even if it installed and loaded the drivers, and this works
with the suse live cd too, I´m installing KDE and will report on sound as soon
as I can. Please try and fix this, without usb I loose my modem, mywebcam, my
printer and my
scanner. I can send more info on the chips, just let me know how to get it (Cat
something in proc, run a script, whatever)

The first one worked!! My Logitek quickcam works perfectly, I suppouse you don't
want me to try the other append line options. Now it would be very nice if this
was fixed in the default kernel that shippes with mdk 9.2, hoping you're still
in time for the ftp isos and the packs.

Thanks for the info...

Here is a few tests...
try to remove 'acpi=ht' from the lilo append line, rerun lilo and reboot

add 'nolapic' to the lilo append line, rerun lilo and reboot

add 'noapic' to the lilo append line, rerun lilo and reboot

and tell me if any of them works...
and no need to post another dmesg outpout if the errors are the same...

and finally...
  what's the output of 'lspcidrake -v' ?

a "non-buggy" kernel. quit hyperventilating.

PS.
about the "buggy" OOo RC4 ... if IRC there are only two minor

So we have a buggy kernel in a final release! Hurray! I was convinced that only
M$ released stuff with known bugs. Will you try and fix this before you out the
ISOs on the ftps? And maybe you could update openoffice to 1.1 instead of having
the buggy rc4 (Did I say something about known bugs?)

Answering Kevin:

1)Please add your comments to bugs that are more applicable, there are a number
of bug reports on the Philips Webcam issue (including workarounds), and AFAIK,
this bug report has nothing to do with it.

2)The bug isn't in the kernel, but in the ALSA sound drivers (which will be
in-kernel in 2.6). Most sound cards are better supported with ALSA than with OSS
(the sound system that ships with the 2.4 kernel).

3)No distribution (at least of the commercial distros) ships with stock kernels
as the default kernel, since at present there are so many features which don't
work as well without 3rd-party patches

4)A "vanilla" 2.4 kernel is available in contrib (but you have to be careful to
not use features it does not have ...)

5)There are a number of mailing lists, including [EMAIL PROTECTED],
[EMAIL PROTECTED] etc. Please see the relevant webpage on the Mandrake
web site.

There is such a thing for mdk 9.2. it's called mandrake discovery. mdk kernel
patches are very good, they introduce features that kernel.org kernels don't
have. If you can have something better than standards, you might as well keep
it. The only thing mdk should do is get these usb ports working.

I also have problems with my Philips Webcam since the 9.1 release. USB
seems to work but the webcam doesn't. In the 9.1, pluging it leads to a
freeze of my box, in the 9.2, it doesn't freeze but doesn't work.

It is an odd issue because it works well with 2.4.20, 21, 22, kernels,
with Con Kolivas patches as well. It even works with 2.6.0-test5, test6
and test7, even with -mm patches.

More generally, as a total newbie on this ML, I wonder why to use
patched kernels in a distribution. I understand that the supermount
patch is a good thing, but I wonder why not to use standards, or at
least very few modified kernels. Or why not tu include at least a
kernel.org kernel in the distrib.

NB : for Mandrake 10, a newbie ML could be a good thing to prevent
people like me to ask such questions

sound did't work even if it installed and loaded the drivers, and this works
with the suse live cd too, I´m installing KDE and will report on sound as soon
as I can. Please try and fix this, without usb I loose my modem, mywebcam, my

For the next installer, it would be a very good idea to ask the user to insert
the modem driver cd. Like this, insted of asking the user to go and download a
file from some web site (That often distributes broken drivers), the installer
could copy alcaudsl.sys from the cd, rename it mgmt.o and put it in
/usr/share/speedtouch, that would help usability a lot.

The only reason the speedtouch module in the kernel is disabled,
is because we also have a standalone rpm that the installer uses...

So to not duplicate the drivers, the easiest fix was done...,
by only disabling it in the kernel... othervise it would have
required changes to the installer, and it was way to late for that...

No big changes with kernel 2.4.22-10mdk, the only thing I noticed in the changelog
is that the speedtouch module has been disabled, I hope this changes before mdk
9.2 or I risk having working usb drivers, but no modem drivers.

IIRC it already includes latest acpi

I also have the same problem. My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-7VA, based on a
KT400 chipset. I use the latest 9.2rc2(cooker) kernel
(kernel-enterprise-2.4.22.10mdk-1-1mdk.i586). All my system is up to date with
the latest cooker.

If i enable acpi (acpi=on) in my boot parameters of the kernel, I can not load

However, if I disable acpi (acpi=off) in the boot parameters of the kernel,
then it works fine, but i can't switch off my computer properly.

With ACPI on, dmesg shows me the following details :

I did a proper install, and I got a irq routing error, that also prevented the
sound driver from working. I turned acpi off, and this solved the irq error, so
now dmesg returns this mysterious message

Mounted devfs on /dev
Freeing unused kernel memory: 152k freed
Real Time Clock Driver v1.10e
usb.c: registered new driver usbdevfs
usb.c: registered new driver hub
usb-uhci.c: $Revision: 1.275 $ time 11:34:48 Aug 25 2003
usb-uhci.c: High bandwidth mode enabled
usb-uhci.c: USB UHCI at I/O 0xd800, IRQ 19

usb.c: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 1
hub.c: USB hub found
hub.c: 2 ports detected
usb-uhci.c: USB UHCI at I/O 0xdc00, IRQ 19
usb-uhci.c: Detected 2 ports
usb.c: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 2
hub.c: USB hub found
hub.c: 2 ports detected
usb-uhci.c: v1.275:USB Universal Host Controller Interface driver
usbdevfs: remount parameter error
EXT3 FS 2.4-0.9.19, 19 August 2002 on ide0(3,1), internal journal
Adding Swap: 506008k swap-space (priority -1)
hub.c: new USB device 00:11.2-1, assigned address 2
usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout
usb.c: USB device not accepting new address=2 (error=-110)
hub.c: new USB device 00:11.2-1, assigned address 3
usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout
usb.c: USB device not accepting new address=3 (error=-110)
SCSI subsystem driver Revision: 1.00
hdd: attached ide-scsi driver.

Now I'm not sure if this can be fixed, or if it' s better to debug acpi and load
the driver using irq routing via acpi, please some kernel guru look into this, I
don't want to use me laptop as a dsl router for ever.
BTW as I've said this works perfectly with the 2.4.20 kdernel that comes with
suse 8.2 live cd, so it isn't a problem impossible to solve.

I had the same problem with all kernels i've tested after 2.4.22-1 (which i
still use currently to post this).
As Ivan, usb modules are loaded, but the speedtouch don't light the usb led.
My MB is MSI KT3 Ultra (usb1.1 only) if it can help.
Tell me if other info is needed.
