[Cooker] Beta4 Install on a Sony Vaio FX-301

2002-08-30 Thread Reinhard Katzmann

Second try, sorry if this is a duplicate, but
I had postfix configured wrongly.

Hi!

Last evening I finally got around installing a beta4.
This was a german expert installation on my Notebook
Sony-Vaio-FX301, based on Via-Chipset with 256 MB RAM,
DVD/CD-ROM, integrated Ethernet, integrated IEEE1394,
integrated Modem (SoftModem), ATI Rage Mobility Graphics
Chipset including DVD-Support, AMD Duron 800 Mhz Proc.

First error (typo) was below the german license
Lesen Sie bitte aufmerksam die die Lizenz... should
only have one die. Second: Instead of Die Software-Produkte
umfassen, aber sind nicht better write sind aber nicht
in the license text itself. Later you write in brackets
(inklusive uneingeschränkt Schäden aufgrund... instead
of (inklusive uneingeschränkter Schäden aufgrund
Also some of the text in the license was duplicated, someone
should read this stuff again and correct it. I also found
out that the original french text has the same error
(this concerns the text above and below AVERTISSEMENT QANT
A LA DETENTION OU L'UTILISATION DE LOGICIELS...).

When I select keyboard type I really like the translation
ohne Akzenttasten :-))

Also you should explain what the Sicherheitsadministrator
(I suppose security administrator) is when configuring msec.

On the Partitioning Screen I saw in the help that the Assistent
was called Abra Kadabra. Is that original oder only german ? ;)
Another thing: Isn't it possible to search reiserfs partitions
for damaged blocks ? I could not select such a partition (this
was also the last partition to select for)

When trying to set up printer with cups this failed as well
because the network could not be started (why start network
when it is a local printer ?) Also network was configured
correctly (realtek ethernet card recognised) but I still got
the message no network seems to be configured for internet
(,yes) on the console while trying to set up printer. Even
manually setting it up did not work this time :-(
Still hpoj and cups were activated for startup (strange, how
could they rcognize my HP printer ? ;-)

The help of the creation of a start disk is not translated
into german (the Text itself above is of course). I chose
not to create one now.

I selected Flat Panel 1024x768 (Flat Panel not translated into
german as well) as monitor type. The screen resolution itself
was correctly detected. But I was disappointed to find out that
the default resolution was set to 800x600...

Rebooting... Failure (this seems to be a Bios problem, rebooting
only worked with the original delievered WinME AFAIR)

Firewire ohci1394 did start on boot (very nice :) but sensors
failed:
sensord: Error -4 loading sensors configuration file: /etc/sensors.conf
sensors-detect did not help me in this case, I was unable
to load i2c-viapro (I included lspcidrake -v and lspci -v in the
attachments). But it worked just fine with the via686a driver.
Somethings seems to be gotten wrong with the detection concerning
sensors-detect.

kdm_config showed up several unrecognized keys (AllowShutdown, NoUsers,
Users) in /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc

Sound module loading suceeded, but I got the following error message
in the kernel log file when I aborted kde loading with kdm (I use
gnome by default...):
kernel: Assertion failed! buffer !=0,via82cxxx_audio.c,via_dsp_write,line=2308

Also gconfd has some translation errors concerning logfile output
(in front of the braces and both have an A with accent circumflex)

Another warning appeared:
kernel: cdrom: This disc doesn't have any tracks I recognize!
I relly don't know who was causing this message.

My Hama pcmcia card (mount-Adapter for compact flash cards Type I and II)
really crashed your kernel on swapper, it did not stop to output stack
info (or whatever, I'm not sure if it was an oops, it just scrolled to
quickly away). I had no problem mounting and using it, only removing
crashed the kernel (i.e. I could no longer use keyboard/mouse). Here is
some kernel output concerning the device (and the card):
cs: memory probe 0xa000-0xa0ff: clean.
hde: PQI FLASH DISK, ATA DISK drive
ide2 at 0x100-0x107,0x10e on irq 3
hde: 128000 sectors (66 MB)
 /dev/ide/host2/bus0/target0/lun0: p1
devfs_do_symlink(disc0): could not append to parent, err: -17
ide_cs: hde: Vcc = 3.3, Vpp = 0.0
some of the above messages were repeated during mounting the device
nothing was found in the log concerning the unmount :(

I also failed to load drakconf from console, though drakxtools-newt
are installed (it simply made a terminal reset). strace -f showed me
that an ioctl on SNDCTL_TMR_STOP were the last two commands (of an extra
running thread or process) before the reset happened

When I started an XTerm, I found the font a bit to large, but for
Gnome Term it was too small :(. Something between the two would
be ok, aterm has a really good size for my screen resolution.
Uh, oh well, I never saw a Konsole with Tip of the day ;) KDE
is really strange... the font size is

I have a Compaq 715US Laptop, and It will not reboot with Mandrake
cooker (most recent) either. It will reboot to the compaq startup
splash screen, but then just sit there.

The system reboots fine with any Micro$soft OS, but with Mandrake, it
won't. I have to shut the system off, and turn it back on again.
