OK - I'm not entirely happy with the solution: Use the OSS driver instead, but
I think this problem is more to do with ALSA than Mandrake. So on that note I'll
close this.

a whole lot of lsmod, rpm -q --whatprovides
/lib/modules/[kernel-version]/[path-to-what-you-saw-in-lsmod], and
Google.

I should point out that sound on my system is FUBAR'd since installing
2.4.21 on 9.0, it can't make up its mind between OSS and ALSA and keeps
loading a few modules from one, a few from another...

well, did you try it while using ALSA instead of OSS as the sound
driver?

I'm going to be very ignorant here and have to ask you how I'd configure things
to test this.

Changing the driver to emu10k1 as suggested in bug 2136 will now cause XMMS to
crash with an error:

buffer size == period size

This message is on the console. XMMS just dies.

Yes, I had the same problem when I started xmms when arts was running,
and thus blocking the sound output. Soundwrapper apparently works only
if you use OSS (or alsa's OSS emulation). The solution I have found is
putting the timeout of arts (look in kcontrol) to 10 seconds, so there's
less chance that arts is blocking the output.

[Cooker] Bug with xmms alsa

2002-08-27 Thread Denis Pelletier

Hello,

xmms is always crashing after playing one or two mp3's/files. I'm using the
alsa 0.9 plugin. Starting xmms from the command line I get:

[dpel@xcrde13 dpel]$ soundwrapper xmms
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:791:(snd_pcm_hw_open) open /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p failed: Device
or resource busy
xmms: pcm_params.c:2136: snd_pcm_hw_refine: Assertion `pcm params' failed.
/usr/bin/soundwrapper: line 11: 9732 Aborted $

xmms is always crashing at the end of a song and before playing the next.
Alsaplayer does not have this problem.

After my daily cooker update, xmms is not crashing anymore! With or without
artsd, soundwrapper. Weird...

I'll work a bit more next time before (falsely) reporting a bug.
