[Cooker] Cooker 7.2rc1 installation notes

2000-10-09 Thread Peter Ruskin

Well, rsync finally finished over the weekend and I did a 'British' hd
install à la Ron Stodden.

I congratulate you Cookers for a great installation. A few points follow:

1. I kept getting the "There was an error installing packages:" message
for locales-es, ~pl, ja, netscape-polish, ~japanese, ~spanish, etc.,
none of which I had selected (expert install - workstation).

2. I have a Promise Ultra66 controller which _was_ recognised, but I
couldn't boot - I had to use my 7.1 boot floppy to get in and do
repairs. It got a little bit further before it hung - reported finding
hde, hdg and hdh - then nothing. I had to remove the
'append=" ide3=autotune ide2=autotune"' line from lilo.conf to make
it work. I put back in its place 'append=" ide2=0xd800,0xdc02
ide3=0xe000,0xe402'. I used to also have 'optim' on this line. Is
that still valid?

I'm very impressed with the still rough-around-the-edges KDE. There must
be some things it doesn't like though, because I made a terrible mess of
it doing a manual upgrade - support, then libs, base, etc. But the Cooker
install makes a very good job of it

Oops! Have I goofed? no_rsync.pl has been developed and only
tested with a:

customized - install - development

install, on the assumed basis that other install type variants should
not call for any additional locales.

Rather than undertaking a large project to test all the variants of
install type (anybody?), I will make what seems to be an install type
restriction clearer in the readme.html that comes with the fast
downloader.

I don't think it was anything to do with your script, Ron. The Cooker
installation was looking for files that it had no business looking for.
The messages were harmless, though, and didn't affect the installation one
bit.

Cheers

Really what needs to happen here, is for the hdlists.cz2 files to be
re-generated by Rons rsync scripts.

IMHO this will resolve this issue completely, and allow you to do *any* kind
of install, as long as it is english.

I could be wrong, but IIRC this is the way it should work

Problem confirmed, but I got 'There was an error ..." messages only
for locales-de (just following locales-en), netscape-german and
hackkernel-source. Pixel?

I don't download hackkernel-source, but probably should for
experts. Experts might want to remove the - hackkernel-source-*
exclude line from rsync_exclude before doing a no_rsync.pl run.

The no_rsync.pl web page readme.html has been altewred to warn those
who install expert, and reassure them that is OK to go on after such
messages.
