Using the Mandrake package installer, after inserting a cd to install a
package. In KDE i have an icon for the cd. right clicking on icon and
choosing either unmount or eject brings up a dialog box saying the only
root can unmount the device. I do not use supermount so it is not
related to that.

ls /dev/scd0 does nothing.

I installed sawfish along with gnome 2

Huh? CD mounting is done by supermount, the user shouldn't be messing
with it. This is the point of supermount, stuff gets mounted and
unmounted automatically and you don't have to bother. :). Unless you've
changed to manual mounting yourself or whatever.

I don't even know if Sawfish is installed by default...are you sure it's
actually there and you're using it? Default WM for GNOME2 is now
Metacity, not Sawfish. I definitely DO have Sawfish, and in current
Cooker the Sawfish Configurator works fine when accessed through the
GNOME menu.

Current schedule doesn't include an RC3. RC2 will be current for a week,
then final will be released.

| It sounds normal if the cdrom was not mounted previously so urpmi
mounted the
| cdrom by itself, only root is able to umount the device after that.

Maybe if urpmi mounted the CD, it should unmount it when it is done?

No or Yes, who know ? If you have other package to install, urpmi will avoid an
umount/mount operations by directly taking care of cdrom already mounted.

I prefer this but it is problable other people will prefer other things.

Note that urpmi is no longer run by user, but it could be the cause as software
manager can be run by user once loged as root.

François.

What gives "ls /dev/scd0"? Doesn't it revive the device?

I don't know if we'll have time for an RC3. It'll depend on the
importance of the bugs found and the quality of our tests.

[Cooker] My faith in mandrake has returned

2002-09-10 Thread Richard Burt

Just installed and tested RC2. Wow!
After the dismal failures of B1,B2, B4 and RC1, I was not looking
forward to installing RC2 but I have been proven wrong. Everything
appears to work fine.

A couple of bugs/gripes though:

1. After installing software, the cdrom cannot be unmounted except by
root. I assume that the package installer is grabbing it and not
releasing it afterwards.

2. I have a USB2 external cd-rw. Occassionally, the special device
/dev/scd0 could not be found and would require a reboot before i could
use it.

3. Sawfish cannot be configured. Click on the sawfish config icons and
zilch, no hard drive action, nothing.

4. After enabling sound server and audio through the gnome control
panel, I had to shutdown and reboot before any sounds would appear.

Other than that, I am impressed. I think i will wait for RC3 before i
upgrade my current system though!
