Only if the date on the souce tarball (notice -r flag) had changed, which
should only really happen if the source had changed. It's a bit of a hack,
but it should be useful IMHO. I haven't tested this yet (just got back
from holiday ..)..

Ohhh I see what you're doing. I missed that you were getting the date

I compile my own kernels, should I still use the gatos drm kernel module for
use with this X?

Thanks.

Using ATI Radeon 64DDR, resolution 1280x1024 using radeon driver.

Install new XFree, logout and restart x-server.
Computer resets. No error, no warning no nothing I simply find myself
watching the BIOS load.

I allow the system to load and boot to init 5 as normal but as soon as
any attempt is made to start X the system resets.

On a hunch I boot to init 3 and edit /etc/X86Config-4 disabling DRI.
I can now boot to X but no longer have 3d.
As a side effect of the bad shutdowns I found myself with screwed menus
and an unstarted eth0 which I had to fix.

I imagine the next mdk kernel will fix this when it comes, the drm kernel
modules for X need to be re-compiled for radeon.

Oddly enough I recompiled the gatos kernel drm for 4.3.0 and all I get is a
blank screen anyway.

I think we could do with a few more rpm macros, or some scripts to
automate building from cvs a bit more. How about:

%define rel 1mdk

%if build_cvs
Release:%(echo 0.`date +%Y%m%d -r %{SOURCE}`.%{rel})
%else
Release:rel
%endif

I guess I should look at finishing up urpmb, with or without a working
'rpm -q --qf %{SOURCE}\n --specfile $PACKGE.spec' ...

ATI doesn't seem to give a crap about us - at least nvidia writes their
drivers and does a pretty good job for linux, I'd be happy if ATI didn't just
dump their work off on someone else and hope it got done. Maybe then we'd
have 3d features that worked. I want to be able to play Unreal Tourn on my

Yeah, I like the effects though (shadow and transparency)

Well, I'll give a shot on 1 of them and see what happens.

ATI did do the linux drivers for the 8500 but still leaves rest for
others.
Since 7.2, before this release of X, I have been quite pleased with the
performance I got from all my ATI cards, either when using the stock
XFree driver or the Gatos.

The update worked without problem with the rage 128 so the DRI problem
