If you had ansered "Yes, i did", I would have say that we need a way to manage
the intention to package ( as Debian people says ).
But now , my perfect transition is out :-(

But, don't you think we need this ?
I know that people on the club can ask for a package, but I think of only a
way to know what is being packaged, if someone need help and so on.

No, but I did ask the author if it was ready for prime time, and the above was
the summary of his rapid response.

Did you intend too to package dosbox ?
Or i didn't understand ?

Author told me `wait for next version' (less than a month) as much of the
unix-like-filesystem code was semi-broken in 0.57.

You could phrase it that way. Both endianesses have their advantages
and disadavantages, also both are in common use. An example for the
use of big-endianess is the network byte order used in the internet protocol.

So little endian is reading the number like japanese or arabic-reading
people, and big endian like 'traditional' western people ??

If you're not a coder you don't need to know this, but I try to make
it simple:

The difference between little-endian and big-endian processors is how
they store integer numbers bigger than one byte. If you store a 16 bit
number you have two options on how to store the two bytes:
1. store the lower part first, that's means store the lower part of
the number at the lower memory address and the higher part at the next
memory address. This is called little endian.
2. the other way around, that's big-endian.

It's the same for bigger number formats, like 32 or 64 bits.

well, not me, the file.

/tmp/dosbox-0.57 $ head INSTALL
First of all if you are running a non-x86 machine this will not work,
code only works for big-endian machines for now :)

I think we should come back to Z80 processor, where things were clear and
simple, with only 8 bits.

Hi,

you've mixed this up: intel and alpha are little-endian, while sparc
and ppc are big-endian.

So you can run dosprograms on an other arch than x86 with this?

it's in debian now, briefly spoke with the packager, both the suse packager
and debian packager hans out on [EMAIL PROTECTED]:)

according to the author it should run on other archs too, but he was unsure if
this was the case for 0.57 or not, 0.58 which be out at the end of this month
should at least run on other archs..

According to the INSTALL file, it runs only on big endian system.

Since the package is not in debian ( last time I checked, one or two month
ago ), I was unable to know where it work and where it don't.
And, I forget to search if sparc and other are big endian or not.

I think that power pc are not big endian processor ( not sure ), and since ppc
is one of the two mdk architecture, I think the tag is mandatory.

you forget to check the architecture.
and, dosbox need libcurses5 to work, and to be compiled.
the configure doesn't check, but, on the rpm I wanted to submit ( but you were
faster ) , I wasn't able to compile it without. Here is the relevant portion.

BuildRequires:libpng-devel SDL-devel libncurses5-devel
Requires:libpng SDL libncurses5
# (misc, 15/02/2003 ) only work on big endian system.
ExclusiveArch: %ix86

And, you can tweak some settings in setting.h, and maybe get a faster binary
with
#define C_EXTRAINLINE=1

but, I didn't try.
