I take it this is a poll :)
So here's my vote.
I vote for beta packages, not for split packages.

I assume if someone installs kde, he has some disk space to use.
At least I do.
I don't consider it much of a problem.

Hi,

I created these packages with all feature. So kdegraphics needs gphoto2,
sorry but it's necessary.
I don't have time to split package.
But if you want that I split packages, I will split them after mdk 8.1 but I
will not create beta kde package, because it's not possible to maintain kde
when we split them.
So I will create just stable version, no problem.

Yep, exactly. I'd like to see *MUCH* more smaller packages. Maybe like
in Debian. For example, in Woody (or was it Sid?), you can even install
konqueror seperately! No need for the whole of KDE if all you want is
Konqueror as a browser/file manager. That would be good!

Not just that, but from a security point of view, the less stuff installed,
the less chance of being r00ted. After all, if a vulnerability is later
found in a package you don't even use, a local or remote exploit won't
make you a happy camper. However, a reported vulnerability for a package
you do NOT have installed can simply be ignored by you.

Thanks... Dan.

[Cooker] Too many unneeded packages

2001-08-28 Thread Alexander Skwar

Hi

I don't have a digital camera, so I don't want or need gphoto2.
However:

[root@teich root]# urpme libgphoto2
To satisfy dependencies, the following packages are going to be removed
(4 MB):
libgphoto2-2.0-0.beta1.2mdk kdegraphics-2.2-5mdk
gphoto2-2.0-0.beta1.2mdk

Also, I don't have a modem, so I don't want or need any fax stuff. So I
want to remove efax. Hoever:

[root@teich root]# urpme efax
To satisfy dependencies, the following packages are going to be removed
(5 MB):
efax-0.9-8mdk kdeutils-2.2-7mdk

Granted, gphoto2 is only 70k, libgphoto2 only 515k and efax is only some
200k in size - but this adds up!

For these two packages, would it be possible to create subpackages
kdegraphics-ghoto2 and kdeutils-efax, which can be installed/removed
when installing gphoto2 and efax?

Generally - don't get me wrong here - but I think that a lot ot packages
are requiring too much of maybe not needed "cruft". Okay, things might
be useful for some users, but in this case, subpackages should be
created if possible.
