Well, AFAIK 2.4.22.10mdk is final.

Well, people who do an update instead of a new install can just urpmi
kernel-win4lin and reboot to have it working for 9.2.

Anyway, the patch in the SRPM is the one from Netraverse, which they
were using for 2.4.22.7mdk, and since it still takes, I don't see that
they would need to change it.

Netraverse will have kernels out quite soon I guess, but if you want to
build your own, just use the patch in the SRPM.

[Cooker] Win4Lin Kernel

2003-09-24 Thread Greg Meyer
Any chance that the "official" kernel for 9.2 could be "officially" provided
to Netraverse so they can get working on an "official" Netraverse supported
kernel for Win4Lin that will work with their graphical installer?

I know Buchan has built a 9.2 kernel in contrib that supports Win4Lin, but
lot's of people will only use the graphical installer or are like me and want
to apply the Netraverse patches to the Mandrake sources to build a custom
kernel.

Oh sorry, I didn't notice what was happening there. I forgot I had the
official win4lin kernel installed. It may not have been removed becuase I
goofed with lilo.conf a lot and they just used a tag before and after the
entry to remove it. I notice the pre tag is gone but the post is still there,
so it may have been my fault.

I wouldn't worry about it for now.

I guess I should try and handle this in %post though, since it will
afect many people ... but it might be Netraverse's perl script having
problems with a lilo.conf which has been modified since you installed
their kernel.

Maybe I shouldn't obsolete Kernel-Win4Lin3, and just provide it? Then it
wouldn't be uninstalled, but there could be problems with rpm and the
/boot/win4lin link, and uninstalling Kernel-Win4Lin3 later could remove
the link on uninstall (which would also give problems).

Hmm, I wanted support for multiple win4lin flavours (smp, up,
enterprise), and forgot they installed them all as /boot/win4lin. But
this entry should really have been removed by the %postun that failed above.

Well, there's no winlin, as there should not be. There shouldn't be a
lilo stanza for image=/boot/win4lin anymore. Unfortuntately you're going
to have to clean up after Netraverse kernel.

Could you remove the entry, run lilo, and see if lilo runs ok, if it

I think that you are the one with the misperception. I think that Randy wants
the newest and greatest Mandrake kernel, and to do that you have to build your
own. It would be nice if the hooks were already there in Mandrake, rather than
having to use Win4Lin's Mandrake kernel (or other), which is a 2.2.16 (or
2.2.15) version.

Randy, it seems that some misperception is being distributed that you
need to build kernels and such to run win4lin. That's simply not the
case, though there is no sitting kernel that works with it and v7.2.
But for 7.1 you don't need to do any kernel patching or rebuilding.

When you install it, win4lin sets up a SECOND kernel and sets it on
your lilo menu. Mine's now set as the default and I could probably
eliminate the old one but this kernel works without any patching or
manipulation other than using rpm to extract it.

> Perhaps Netraverse would like to have something a little more plug and

If these guys have a weakness it is in their marketing. While
everyone else seems more interested in marketing than anything else,
the Win4lin folks don't seem to have a clue how much damage they're
doing to their product image by not evaluating their evalution package
to install with things like Mandrake 7.2. The dumb thing is that they
have the 2.2.17 patch available for those who DO want to build the
stuff but they haven't actually used it themselves in making their
evaluation copy :-( I run 7.1 so this isn't an issue for me but they
really do need to get their act together in that regard.

Cheers --- Larry

There are no special 'VMware' hooks in Mandrake. VMware has modules
they load into the kernel. No re-compile of the kernel source required.

Since running running Mandrake I haven't had to ( or really wanted to )
re-compile the kernel from source. And yes I used to do it all the
time.

Right now that 's what has kept me from trying Win4Lin. I have a nicely

IIRC, they are similar to the kernel hooks already added to support VMware,
so there _should_ be no ideological issues here.

According to the feedback I got from Trelos (now Netraverse), the Mandrake
folks just don't want to consider it. If true, that's unfortunate.

I would ask that they re-consider. I am very impressed with 7.2's ability to
install, detect hardware and implement a slick desktop suitable for a
business workstation. Clearly one of the leaders in the field. The inclusion
of Win4Lin support would only make the distro more desireable.

And I third it!

The patches don;t work against an as-delivered Mandrakified kernel source set, I
don't want to lose Mandrake's performance and security tweaks, there is no
comprehensive list supplied with the modified kernel to allow one to pick and
choose which patches to use against a ``vanilla'' kernel, and the Win4Lin
changes are small. I think Mandrake's sales staff would go for it (pump up the
volume), and there is no direct compromise of the distribution's open-ness. It
would help Mandrake penetration into the business market if you could install
the distro, download the Win4Lin userland apps and be running everything in the
office from your Mandrake box within minutes.
