While I disagree on the KDE only thing (I'm a GNOME only guy *G*), I
*completely* aggree with what you say. I think it would be *way* better
to split up a lot of the packages in smaller packages so that only the
needed parts can be installed.

And maybe try to introduce Debian-like task packages, to ease
installation of large components (like koffice, KDE, gnome ...).

I would say : remove all windowmanager dependencies from mandrake_desk.

I guess that you can live with a few useless Gnome (s/Gnome/KDE)
configuration files on your computer, what you really want is to remove
easily the large library. The question is : why is there a dependency on
such a package? It is not sensitive package, so removing the dependency
would not break anything, as far as I know.

[Cooker] mandrake_desk multiple installs

2001-07-15 Thread Marcel Pol

Hello,

Almost everytime i update with urpmi, it tries to install
mandrake_desk-8.0-12mdk, which is already installed.

urpmi --auto-select
urpmi --auto-select -M
try to do it.

urpmi --auto-select -m
is the only way it doesn't try to install mandrake_desk.
Maybe it's designed that way, but i can't imagine that.

Greetings,

[Cooker] mandrake_desk-7.2-4mdk - bad /usr/sbin/chksession

On Fri, 08 Sep 2000, I wrote:

 If you're using KDE 1.1.2 as I do, this results in a long row of
 comma-separated display managers instead of a drop-down list when kdm
 appears, and you can't choose any of them. This is not good.

 Line 79 should be as follows:
   for(@lf) { $session .= /$lf[-1]/ ? "$_;failsafe;default" : "$_;"  }

Would it be possible to do something like this?
if ($kdm) {
  if installed KDE version = 1.*; then {
$session="SessionTypes=";
for(@lf) { $session .= /$lf[-1]/ ? "$_;failsafe;default" : "$_;"  }
print "$session\n";

  else {

for(@lf) { $session .= /$lf[-1]/ ? "$_,failsafe,default" : "$_,"  }
print "$session\n";

As soon as I installed the new mandrake_desk, Enlightenment vanished
from my list of gdm/kdm window managers. It's easy to for the user to
fix, but probably worth doing it properly from your end. -Karl
