[Cooker] NEW INSTALL IMAGES FOR MDK 9.1...
Sorry for the delays, but my DSL is broken, so I've been dooing most of my downloading over my GPRS phone... (thank god it's fixed montly fee ,-)... already over 70MB in just a couple of days) Here is a copy of what I have at: http://www.iki.fi/tmb/Cooker/ (with some added contents...) MDK Cooker Stuff by tmb Here's updated stuff to MDK 9.1: Here is the updated boot disk: http://www.iki.fi/tmb/Cooker/13mdkboot.img Here is the fix for standard kernel: http://www.iki.fi/tmb/Cooker/13mdkfix.img Here is the fix for enterprise kernel: http://www.iki.fi/tmb/Cooker/13mdkentfix.img (of couse I could have built a fix for every kernel, but I want them tested,and theese 2 kernels shoud give everyone a chance to try them out...) What do they try to fix? - the boot problem with Promise based IDE controllers, by setting CONFIG_PDC202XX_FORCE=Y - the VESA framebuffer problem that hangs systems with 1024 MB of RAM or more... (by adding the vesafb_vram_option patch that is listed below) Here's how to use them: Download them to your computer and write the images to floppy disks. (you'll need at least 2 of the files above, the boot, and the one depending on the kernel you wan't to update...) the command under Linux is: dd if= of=/dev/fd0 bs=512 Insert your MDK 9.1 CD and boot with your newly made boot disk and install as usual when you have installed the system, and the installer tells you to reboot,DONT!! Instead you need to do this: 1. Go to console (Ctrl-Alt-F2) 2. type: chroot /mnt (and press enter) 3. insert your floppy fix disk created above 4. type: mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy -t vfat (and press enter) 5. type: /mnt/floppy/Install (and press enter) 6. Wait until the prompt returns (you will see some file copying, ...) 7. type: umount /mnt/floppy (and press enter) 8. type: exit (and press enter) 9. Go back to installer (Ctrl-Alt-F7) 10 NOW you can reboot (don't forget to remove the floppy) What does it do? - it removes ONLY the files in /boot that are related to the kernel it fixes (vmlinuz,initrd,map,config,kernel) and replaces them with the fixed ones... - it removes /lib/modules/kernel_to_fix/kernel/drivers/ide/raid/* and replaces them with fixed ones - it removes /lib/modules/kernel_to_fix/modules.dep and recreates it with depmod using the replaced /boot/System.map... - it installs the kernel by the 'installkernel' command so it recreates the initrd and updates lilo/grub Does it work? - YES ... (atleast for me...) - I have tested this fix procedure almost 20 times, and none of the 3 systems I tested on has complained... If you have the vesa framebuffer problem: when you are booting from your disk made above, and get to the first install screen (were you have the option to press F1...) do this: 1. Press F1 2. type: linux video=vesa:vram:32 (and press enter) (the numer 32 means that you want to allocate 32MB for the framebuffer, and you can choose any size you want, specified in MB. A generic rule is to allocate the same amount as your graphic card has RAM, but it's your choice) 3. the installer continues, install as normal. 4. when you get to the summary screen, choose the bootloader configuration. 5. enter the line used above in the append field and accept the changes. 6. dont forget the fix procedure mentioned above. Other useful patches: (they are all diffed against kernel-source-2.4.21-0.13mdk, and only useful to those who knows how to apply patches to the kernel, and rebuild it) Disable local apic on presario 7xx series + some other: http://www.iki.fi/tmb/Cooker/dmi_scan_update.patch.bz2 (this one is the same as the one I sent earlier, and is included in the mm kernel) Firewire update to linux1394.org branch-2.4 revision 848: http://www.iki.fi/tmb/Cooker/ieee1394_rev848.patch.bz2 Buffer handling updates for every upcoming nic update: (taken from pre6) http://www.iki.fi/tmb/Cooker/net_skbuf_update.patch.bz2 Update via-thine to 1.1.16 to fix some bugs: http://www.iki.fi/tmb/Cooker/net_via_rhine_1.1.16_update.patch.bz2 Updates wireless stuff to orinoco 0.13.c to fix bugs: http://www.iki.fi/tmb/Cooker/orinoco_13c.patch.bz2 (the file hermes.conf should be copied to directory /etc/pcmcia (or better yet merged with pcmcia-cs package...)) updates pci.ids to 1.48 + *a lot* of nVidia ids: http://www.iki.fi/tmb/Cooker/pci.ids_1.48-tmb.patch.bz2 adds vesa framebuffer size option: http://www.iki.fi/tmb/Cooker/vesafb_vram_option.patch.bz2 Have Fun !! (and let me know if it works for you...) Thomas PS. If everything works out I'll have a new kernel by Sunday, wich has all the patches above, along with stuff like: - radeon framebuffer support (experimental) - nvidia framebuffer support (maybe...) - ide subsystem from pre5-ac3 with different patches (close to what the 2.4.21 will have, if I understand Marecelos message on the Kernel ML) - updated support for SK nics, including gigabit - reiserfs from pre6 with

[Cooker] new install floppies, more modules dropped
DrakX will at last switch to new kernel-BOOT. Alas, ACPI is big, but is going to be needed more and more in the future. The result is a kernel ~100KB bigger, and fitting on floppy even harder than before. Hopefully install floppies are no more as important as they used to be (because of isolinux all.img, PXE/tftp, hdgrub [1])... but it's no reason to drop them so soon [2] Removed floppies: usb.img, other.img New floppies: hd_usb.img, network_gigabit_usb.img - good news: many gigabit drivers are now available - bad news: the following modules are not available on install floppies disk/scsi: NCR53c406a aha152x psi240i qlogicfas qlogicfc wd7000 sim710 t128 ultrastor 53c7,8xx dc395x_trm BusLogic seagate fdomain g_NCR5380 3w- pci2220i qla2x00 eata eata_pio eata_dma in2000 pas16 a100u2w AM53C974 u14-34f disk/hardware_raid: i2o_block qla2200 qla2300 cpqfc DAC960 network/main: olympic acenic aironet4500_card com20020-pci hamachi starfire winbond-840 fealnx 3c990fx prism2_plx dgrs tmspci ibmtr abyss 3c501 3c503 3c505 3c507 3c515 eepro 82596 de620 depca ewrk3 cs89x0 iph5526 ac3200 at1700 atp ni5010 ni52 ni65 (nb: a lot of them were already not available on install floppies) If you use one of those, please tell! Just did new install, Configuration, Console, Gnome, KDE groups selected, ni manual package selection, Russian locale KOI8-R. First time login, startx. 1. Background has nasty and distasteful dark red color (blood color is probably right term). When wizard starts background is changed to usual blue. I cancelled Wizard and KDE came up with this new color. 2. There is no desktop items in KDE except Home and Trash bin. To remind, I have cancelled wizard. But yesterday I did *not* cancelled it and got the same result. 3. There is no quick launch bar in KDE (or it is empty). Again it was yesterday as well. All problems are not related to 2.2.1, they were yesterday. -andrej

For some resaon only the 8.0 beta 1 will install on my system. The only real problem that I have is that the video cards are not proerly set up. I have not tried beta2 but I have been making my wn cd's using the mkcds script. Last night it was so bad that when i tested with fxfree4 the video card It gave a lot of errors so I tried with xfree 3 and it completely loked up the system. I know this can occasionaly happen but I've never experianced this before accept for the 8.0 beta stuff. My video casd is a voodoo3 3000. by the way as of last night I noticed xfree 4.03 in the packages but the installer says 4.02 when it asks for the setup the next problem was rather small. the installer whould ot set up networking it complained about a missing script. and finaly if I try to set up my wheeled trackball (it's a logitech trackman marbel wheel mouse) during the install my mouse disapears. and doesn't come back. I have todo the rest of the install without it.

Did a rsync of mirror this am and did a reinstall to see how things were progress. Unfortunately the install was not a good as previous. the install was expert, development, everything -previously as a user I could not launch DrakConf and get into privilaged, after password nothing happens, areas but I could as a normal user su to root and from the command prompt run DrakConf. This doesn't work anymore. DrakConf comes up but when I pick startup services i get errors. See the attached drakconf.txt for the errors. - the same errors occur if I pick any other setting in DrakConf. - the menus selection is not complete .. all I see is favorites, applets, another level menus, kde menus,run, panel, lockscreen, and log out. paper size is letter - printing problems (CUPS)... i've got a HP LJ 4L selecting a printer during install ... I selected my printer (4L, foomatic + ljt4 (en) and the image size was 4 x what is should have been. The top and left margins look okay but the bottom and right are off the screen. Image quality is good. tried HP laserjet, foomatic + laserjet (en) good quality but the top and right margins are off the page tried generic postscripe ... print quality is good but the bottom and top margins are a little too big. About a third bigger than the left and right tried hp 4 series cups +gimp Print v4.0 (en) .. image quality is terrible looks like a very bad draft copy hmmm ... resolution on the print says it is 150x150dpi ... the left, right , bottom margins are all good but the top margin is off the page tried hp laserjet, foomatic + laserjet (en) ... top and right margin is off the page, left margin is a little big and the looks okay finally tried cups, ljcups v1.1 en .. quality is good but again the top and bottom margins are pushed into the page about a 1/3 more than they should. If the top and bottom margins were set the same as the bottom margin from 4 series cups +gimp print v4.0(en) it would be perfect. - text printing is okay .. just the postscript is causing me to hack page margins and I didn't have to before with 7.1 using lp I will hold onto these printouts incase anyone needs more information Creating a boot disk this failed .. mkbootdisk failed .. I tried both disk 1 and 2 after this I tried the autoinstall floppy and it worked There was a few other errors on boot up that I didn't record ... i think by definition the dev kernel is not going to be in a distro install. closest you can get is maybe the hackkernel. but doing the dev kernel from a source download isn't to bad route is 1 install the distros kernel source rpm (for RH or L-M type distros) when you fix the deps you get the toolsets 2 go to www.kernel.org or one of the mirrors and get the archive (all 12 megs) 3 unpack the archive and rename the tree (will be linux) to the version number (currently as of this mailing 2.3.99pre5 for the BETA) 4 move the tree to /usr/src/ and symlink to linux in the same directory (remove the existing symlink) 5 straight out of the retail manual for L-M in a terminal type cd usr/src/linux/ make xconfig make dep make clean make bzImage make modules make modules_install 6 {bad singing} A HACKING WE WILL GO , A HACKING WE WILL GO ... {/bad singing}

The prices really are generaly comparable unless of course you live in one of those places where satalite telephones are a must. anyways, so like if the difference is greater than 1 to 1.5 shipping maybe cheeper than buying localy and paying taxes.
[Cooker] New Install of Oxygen - Few things....
Greetings, I just installed Oxygen 7.2 (iso dated 99.12.24) on my PC, as a fresh install. Noticed the following point: (Sorry if they've been covered before, I've just joined the listserv) 1) When Installing, if it detects existing Linux partitions, it would not let me create new/more. 2) LinuxConf - While adding a user, if "Help" is brought up, the screen is corrupted (goes solid blue) when help is closed. 3) "Normal" user is unable to run X successfully. Root has no problems, but when a regular user starts X, the server loads, the screen goes blue with an "X" cursor, but the KDE desktop never appears (some drive activity, but no desktop) I can provide more details (i.e. System specs, etc) if helpful. Re: [Cooker] new install
It was trying to use my modem for the network. I think. I set up the modem during install. Pixel wrote: root [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: [...] 3) The modem install didn't work quite so nice this time and the crypto packages could not be downloaded during install. I just created an rc.serial and rebooted wich fixed the modem. It used to find it automaticaly though. francois? 4) hwiz or whatever didn't install so I just installed the package myself wich fixed the hwiz errors. it will be in kdebase Requires 5) For some reason sndconfig didn't install either. uh! [...] 7) I like the new crypto download option maybe it will work better as soon as i get a cable modem. in fact, it shouldn't ask you about crypto stuff if there is no network available.
Re: [Cooker] new install
Well most of the same ;-) It also got stucked at cryptografic, "choose a mirror from which to get packages from... and the same, it couldn't find the modem... which it did before, if I hit -cancel- skips the option to go to the next, but after setting the time, it comes back to the same option "choose a mirror..." also I get the same error, KFM Warning, could not execute program /usr/bin/hwiz uhh it too early here, all night awaken ;-) its about time to go to bed, I like the packages pre-selection "choose the size of installation and add more packages... neat! Kfm segfaults if I try to go to the linux mandrake website. Even if i use the News link on the desktop. Netscape still segfaults, so i still using the nightly builds of mozilla for now. It'll be nice when they get the bugs worked out. I noticed that there are new fiiles on the mirror right now so I'll try a reinstall in the morning. Great... just what I was waiting for... I'll download again and burn a cd in the morning... Thanks sk
