Re: [Cooker] 3dfx voodoo3 with XFree4

2000-07-15 Thread john . cavan

The kernel module in the X tree is broken against the latest development
kernels and the module that ships with the kernel is flagged as too old
to work with X. According to David Miller, this patch will fix up the
kernel shipped module to work:

--- vanilla/linux/drivers/char/drm/drm.hTue Mar 14 09:27:31 2000
+++ linux/drivers/char/drm/drm.hSun Jun 18 00:28:26 2000

I should also note that there is a version flag in the tdfx driver that
also has to be adjusted or X will still reject it.

 For the moment it does not work. We've worked on that yesterday but not
 yet finished -- the dri/tdfx module does not compile anymore with 4.0.1
 and Fred does not no why.

 FYI I was meaning the tdfx.o kernel module, not tdfx_drv.o for which fred
 answered. He managed to compile that yesterday but we have to decide
 whether it's possible to put it in the kernel package which would be
 better of course.

Take the latest Mesa package from Cooker and install the Glide_V3. It
should suffice. Try with morph3d from Mesa-demos. I used "3dfx.o" kernel

but I'm not sure whether it's mandatory or not.

If I want direct rendering though, I need at least a 2.3X kernel, right? I
guess there is an option for this in a newer kernel?

like defining a variable on a commandline:

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libglide3x.so.2 gears

you can ofcourse perform "export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libglide3x.so.2" (but
it's a little bit too much)

have a look at the glx script from Mesa-3.2-4mdk

I took a 7.1 and it compiled fine (some warnings).

You need the Glide module from the contribs rather than the mainline,
the XFree glide module contains the video driver for the older Voodoo
cards, not the Voodoo3. The Glide stuff in contribs supplys the glide
library for general apps.
