OK here goes:

before starting X e.g. in /etc/rc.local

modprobe agpgart
modprobe r128

This loads the DRM Kernel module

now edit the Module Section of /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
Add:
Load dri
Load glx

that should be enough thou I also load vbe dbe but have forgotten why
:)
now:
 startx 2 xfree86.log

Once X has started or not as the case maybe, you should see the line:

Direct rendering enabled

That should do it.

Good Luck,

Bill Noyce.

The ATI Mobility can have 3D accelaration under X4. It just requires a
 little fiddling around.

Ok, i tried 3.3.6 w/expirmental accelleration again... no go...:

execve failed for etc/X11/X (errno 2)
 giving up.
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to x server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): server error

 I chose the following settings:

 Generic LCD 1400x1050
 ATI Rage Mobility P
 16bit colour @ 1400x1050
 XF86 3.3.6 w/ 3d accel.

This used to work, and I want my 3D accelleration back :(

I tried with xfree 4.1.0 and it worked fine.

See, I told u. =)
Thats why I like Mandrake distribution - new!
Keep up the good work!

I've got an Inspiron 8000 with the r128, using X4 works great at 1400x1050,
never tried X3 with it. I've never used accel gfx with it but I can't imagine
it'd be any harder to do with x4.

Yes, do please expand on that. I though the some Mobility chipsets are no
longer accelerated. To accelerate them you have to go back XF 3.3.6 :-(

Quoting Chris Edwards [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Here are my results as of 08/15 (today) with the

 Inspiron 7500:
 ATI Rage Mobility -P
 1400x1050
 P3 700

 ReiserFS
 2.4.8mdk-4
 KDE2.2
 XFree86 3.3.6 w/ Experimental 3D support

 Problems:

 1. Hitting Cancel during the X config screen in install (Resolution screen
only) will restartx config and return and error (invalid pixmap). Hitting
cancel on the other screens will go to the more advanced x config screen.

 2. After configuring X, I will boot up.. and startx... it dies during
 startx.:

execve failed for etc/x11/x (errno 2)

this is after a minimal install (everything de-selected (main menu, not
 individual package selection) except kde

 Anything i'm doing wrong?

Does minimal+kde not include x? I thought the dependancies would include
 everything needed to boot kde.
