We will investigate the legal issue, but I deeply agree that if
we will need to release without mp3 support, it will be a big
step backward for users :-((.

Yes, maybe on our proprietary CD's we can include mp3 players,
this would sort of fix a bit of the problem (plf/download for
people using GPL edition). But I'm not sure there is proprietary
mp3 players available "easily" for Linux? As an xmms plugin it
would be nice.

PLF is not a solution for the main distribution, since first you
need a live connection to the internet, second you need to
install the packages manually because not taken into account by
the install and we can't since it would mean we support/back it.

I explicitely refered to proprietary software.

Commercial == Proprietary when it goes to our CD's in our PowerPack.

Yeah especially since RedHat hasn't taken this action yet. Plus the
linked website off the RedHat site is less than clear. It only says
"MacOS and Windows object libraries" need licensing. Now were they
just not mentioning Linux because they don't care about us. Or because
they just didn't put it on there. I don't know. I'd let RedHat figures
this out and see what they do...

It looks like xmms uses a plugin(libmpg123). So xmms could be installed with only
vorbis
plugin.

But will people use an OS that can't play the mp3 CDs they spent years to fill ?
I think mp3 players MUST be present in commercial editions.

Yup Ogg Vorbis rules. I use it exclusively for quite some time now.

They don't have to remove the whole XMMS. They would just need to remove
MP3 decoder plugin.

I agree on this.

Two point:

- If mandrake want remove all mp3 support (encoding AND decoding)... xmms
should be remove too, and lot of other stuff

- if mandrake want remove thoses package, please, before give us the list to
move it in plf BEFORE deleting ! Not as traditionnal way, deleting and after
plf packager need to go CVS to ressucite them.
