Yes, you can assign key shortcuts to open any application in Kde2, but
you have to compile Kde2 by yourself.
In Kmenuedit go to any application and choose Advanced, and there you can
do it.

Regarding menuDrake, If I add a menu entry and Save.  Exit menudrake, reload 
menu drake the new menu entry has gone and never appears on the KDE menu.

 Kcontrol  Look'n'feel  Key Bindings  - and look at the bottom you can
 assign keys, but first you have to mark action in Key Bindings window.

It's weird. Menudrake works here perfectly. I have also Mandrake 7.2.
