Dave you lazy bumm.  I vote to leave the default alone let those that
don't like it get off their duff and log in as root for 30 seconds. :)

The console has no stars, so I say nix the stars, or at least obfuscate 
them. What we are talking about, though, is the default for the system 
when kdebase is installed. While I can get to it in the control panel, 
that would require root which I'd rather not mess with anyway :)

The number of stars can be changed in control panel>login manager from no to 
1 to 3 stars at the users preference.

I'd rather that it echoed back a random number of stars, instead of not
echoing them back at all.  As you said, newbies would think it's not
being typed at all.  If it echoed back a random number of stars, they'd
know it's typing something.

You want to make things as easy as possible for the newbie, but you also
want to make things as easy as possible for the SysAdmin who has to
support them, and whose phone will ring off the hook from newbies
calling him for help.
