- be able to detect that you have the drivers for the wrong version
  and refuse to use it (at least that )

It definatly run a little slower on the generic 2.4.18 kernel, X crashes
and hangs the machine on 2.4.17-21mdk, 2.4.17-2mdk is OK

It works here on my inspiron 8000 with Rage Mobility Pro. Do you have your 
display set to 16bit?

  No, if you use XF 4.2 (not 4.1) and current kernel it should work, if you
  mix an old version of XFree with current kernel, do not activate DRI
  (hardware 3D).

Ah ha ! There's a problem here that I had overlooked ! My card is detected as 
ATI|Rage Mobility M3 AGP 2x but it doesn't work with the r128 drivers. It 
has to use the good old ati driver. Is this why 3D accelleration is not 
present ?

kernel-2.4.17-21mdk and XF 4.2.0-7mdk. glxinfo reports direct rendering: No 
and gears reports a frame rate of 90/sec ! agpgart is loaded but reports no 
users. If I manually load r128 agpgart then reports 1 user, but still no 3D 
accelleration.

have a full cooker or take latest XFree as it use gatos drivers (
http://gatos.sourceforge.net/ati.2.php )
