before activating xft and GTK2 in mozilla package..

The best way to to that would be an extension to chkfontpath, does
RedHat 8.0 already have that?

Yeah, except that it doesn't seem to work as well, a font dir I had working 
before now causes X death, when added to fonts.conf.

2600 actually - I've got the windows font's I imported by hand into 
drakfont/ttf - they work fine.

I imported about 2600 from a CD into /usr/local/share/fonts/ttf (ran ttmkfdir 
and mkfontdir, etc.) they were working before.

After you install fontconfig and Xft-2 ,edit your /etc/fonts/fonts.conf file 
and add 

dir/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/drakfont/ttf/dir

or where ever you have your ttf fonts installed. 

We've been playing with this for about a 3-4 weeks now.

Ok - seems actually that it's my added font's dir that I got off a 3rd party 
CD. I've got about 2600 fonts that I used before that now if I add to the 
config for fonts.conf breaks X.
 :(
