i just had the chance to test-install the 8.0 final of mandrake ppc on an indigo ibook firewire (2000) and a cube with an attached apple 15" lcd studio display and observed the following: * i was on both machines not able to get to the graphical installer - i tried many of the provided kernels also with a lot of video vmode etc. options - no go - i get either a blue screem with the typical x stipple background and a big x cursor (with the default install) or garbage (ibook) or a turning off monitor (lcd) with other modes ... all this always happens then the installer tries to start its xserver ... does anyone else experience this too or has a solution for it (some magic boot commandlines :-)? * so the only option left is text install on those machines ... to see how well this would work (after having discovered some problems with textinstall on my imac with the first beta) i did a text mode test-install on my imac (onto a free partition) with the following observations (btw. all this is about the expert mode of it and now done with the final 8.0 ppc): * it is not possible to to choose a non us keyboard in the install (the "more" button on the keyboard selection is missing in the text install) - so i left it as us for the installation * it often puts out some errors of not being able to find some LC_xyz values (en:us or something like) - looks like something with the locales is broekn in the text installer which makes the installer output not very readable * it does not ask me for the second install cd (i think it gave an error about this for a very short time before it asked for the root password) although i told it that i have the second cd * this resulted in the expectation that i will not have all the packages installed at the end (it can't if it has not seen the second cd it uses for my packages choosed - all without the game station, the scientific workstaion and the other graphical desktops) ... but what i saw confused me even a bit more: it installed besides that a somewhat different set of packages - is the text-installer using it's own package list to install? ... at the end of this mail i append a diff of a "rpm -qa" made directly after the graphical install and the text install - the confusing parts are the "-" ones (why does the text install install things the graphical does not for the exact same package selection?) and the following "+" which say the textinstaller does not even install some packages which are on the first cd howto-html-en-8.0-1mdk.noarch.rpm howto-utils-0.2.3-1mdk.noarch.rpm ispell-en-3.1.20-15.1mdk.ppc.rpm locales-en-2.3.1-7mdk.noarch.rpm mandrake_doc-en-8.0-2mdk.noarch.rpm all the other "+" come from the fact that it never saw the second cd ok - thats all so far ... and please don't get me wrong - i think that mandrake/ppc is a great distribution - i only noticed those things and wanted to describe them here in best possible detail so that they might get fixed in the next release ... in the hope that this is helpful ... keep up the good work t -- thomas graichen <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ... perfection is reached, not when there is no longer anything to add, but when there is no longer anything to take away. --- antoine de saint-exupery

What the setup does is link: /dev/mouse --> /dev/usbmouse --> /dev/input/mice Which is kindof neat on a laptop, because it will autmagically pickup both the trackpad and an external mouse (except when it becomes annoying, as in your case) Chances are the trackpad is on /dev/input/mouse0, and the external USB mouse is on /dev/input/mouse1, although I juts tried on my Powerbook and my external mouse actually landed in /dev/input/mouse2. So if you change the entry in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4: Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse1" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol""IMPS/2" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" to the correct device for your external mouse, the problem should go away. For the console, the device is defined in /etc/sysconfig/mouse and mine is pointed to /dev/usbmouse, which is linked to /dev/input/mice, but my machine has changed since the initial install.
