Ah, the 466 Mhz info was from Mac OS9 system info, but as I started
digging into it (turned the machine around and looked at the sticker
next to the serial number in the bottom) it turns out it originally
was a 266 Mhz machine.. My bad, sorry for the confusion, should have
checked that before I started :-)

Anyways, I got it working with BootX after installing the latest
Stuffit, so now it's a happy little Mandrake.

Thanks for your help!

Something doesn't jive there. If it's a 466MHz machine it should
certainly be NewWorld. The type -39 error has been documented. Just drop
the .sit file into DropStuff or unstuff it from the StuffIt menu.

That machine is old-world and yaboot will NOT work [hence Mandrake-CD is
not bootable]. BootX is the only chance (well miboot or quik but they are
not supported in Mandrake). Just follow the instructions for typing in
the arguments to BootX -- use the vmlinux-2.2 kernel,
options->ramdisk->install-2.2-ramdisk etc. There is a webpage + an older
copy on the CD but I am short on details cos I am at a conference.

My Wallstreet II works fine this way. In MacOS use apple profiler to
check which machine you have. The bootX script that you tried requires
applescript to run -- check if that is installed -- it is on the MacOS CD.

I would check the checksums, they are there for checking the quality of the
downloaded iso's. Under OSX, there is a nice program called md5app. You just
drag the iso into the window and it gives you the numbers, pretty easy...

PowerBook G3 installation. Help needed.

2002-06-01 Thread Tero Hänninen

Hello list...

I recently received oldish G3 PowerBook 466Mhz, and since I've never been a
Mac person at all I thought I'd give Mandrake 8.2 a go. However not being a
Mac person also means this is my first Linux PPC installation..and I got in
trouble before I even got started...

First round:
Downloaded the iso images, and burned them on CDs. According to the
installation guide pressing "C" should enable CD booting. It didn't on this
machine.
Cmd-Opt-O-F took me to firmware, but "boot cd:\\yaboot"
didn't do any good, the screen just quickly blinked and then
machine happily continued booting Mac OS 9

Second Round:
Since the machine is not brand new I thought the CD drive might be faulty,
so I set up network booting through TFTP. Pressing "N" during boot didn't
make the machine want to do anything else than boot to Mac OS, but "boot
enet" in firmware prompt worked. I get:

0 > boot enet file: 192.168.0.2,/boot/mac/yabootLoading ELF
DEFAULT CATCH!, code=FFF00300 at %SRR0: FF80AFD0 %SRR1: B070

After this I tried to boot the installation from HD (by copying files to the
disk, and issuing boot commands from firmware) and in my desperation even
from a floppy...but nothing worked.

I'm starting to wonder if I did something wrong while I was burning the CD's
(used WinXP/Nero) and managed to corrupt things, but I'm really starting to
run out of ideas.

Anyone else had similar problems or can explain that DEFAULT CATCH?
I'd appreciate any help/hints/pointers.

I've also tried the BootX installation but unpacking
Mandrake_Linux_Install.sit gave me "type -39 error"

Thanks,
Tero
