Kernel panic message trying to re-instal - UPDATE

2003-03-16 Thread Pablo E. Fernandez L.
Hello everyone,

I could finally install Mandrake!!!, I tried kernel vmlinuz. Not the 2.2
version, and it worked perfect. As the first time. Stew, I think I always
tried the plain vmlinuz version, sorry about that.

A couple of things after installation:

1) Selected GNOME as desktop enviroment. Didn't work with an user I created
but it worked as root, why? After typed 'startx' It appears the blue
screan, then gets back to the shell. Telling that X has been shutdown. That
didn't happen with KDE. Do I have to configure something additional?

2) How to switch from GNOME to KDE? Via control center? logged as root?

Thanks in advance, and have you all good evening.

Regards

Pablo

Re: Kernel panic message trying to re-install - Long -

2003-03-16 Thread Pablo E. Fernandez L.
Thanks for the reply Stew.

Yes, I performed the installation using "Install Mandrake PPC 8.2 " script.
Selected 2.2 the first time and now again.

Checking my system folder:

Linux Kernel folder wich contains:
all-2.2.gz
all.gz
initrd-2.4.18-6.1mdk.img
vmlinux
vmlinux-2.2
vmlinuz-2.4.18-6.1mdk

Bootx control panel and extension has not been copied yet. So I start the
installer making double click on the Bootx which is located on the desktop
folder>Mandrake Linux Install (is a folder but the icon is a star)

My actual bootx settings are (after double click on the icon):

kernel vmlinux-2.2
Ramdisk size 8192
No video driver (selected)
More kernel arguments area: ramdisk_size=34000 automatic=method:cdrom text
options: force scsi on (not selected), force video settings (selected),
ram disk: all-2.2.gz.

I hope these information gives you a picture of my actual system.
Now I am gonna remove the
vmlinux & vmlinux-2.2, from the system folder because they are duplicated
in the pop-up menu.

I will post further results here, any help is highly appreciated.

regards

Pablo

Did you use kernel22 the first time? This is right at the start of
stage2? If so, I doubt it's your hard drive, as the installer isn't even
looking at it yet at that point.

Fat32 - there are a lot of Macs with Fat32 partitions?

It's a little late at this point to start tinkering with the installer,
I'm about ready to release the final. Perhaps the next time around. I
guess if you've already got the ISO, why not just burn it to CD? It's not
a bad idea though, just adds a bit more to the stage1 installer.

Stew,

how difficult would it be to add hfs or FAT32 support to the installer so
you could install off a hard disk in the machine ?

I currently use FTP install, but it would be a lot faster to d/l the ISO,
mount it, copy the files to the local drive and install from there.

Just a though. BTW, thanks for the info on URPMI

Loading? Uh, oh, have you loaded something? During the process install,
the only loaded thing is: "INSMOD FAILED, retry?"
Oh yeah, retry, retry...
None modules can be loaded with the default kernel and his ramdisk :-(
Anyway, my Cd drive is IDE...

Ok, thanks for your answer, Stew.

Bob, thanks, I have a couple of questions:

First, how far back can you update from ? I have 8.2 would it be advisable
to update to cooker ?

Also, how do I do a local synchronize ? I have an FTP server, and would
like to keep a current version if possible.

Thanks,

AH

Kernel panic message trying to re-install

2003-03-16 Thread Pablo E. Fernandez L.
  Hello guys,

I have decided to re-install Linux on my powermac 7600. After rebooting my
mac (contol-alt-power) My linux installtion found problems in the disk that
could not be repaired.

I proceeded to format my hd, one partition for Mac OS (250Mb) and the rest
for linux (extra partition).

Double clicked on Mandrake Install script, selected text installation, I
could never install under graphic installation. The installer boots, asks
for language, I selected spanish, (my first installation was in english).
The installer prepares the files to begin installation.

And I got this message:

"In second stage install
Kernel panic exception in kernel pc c01539a0 signal 4"

What is that? I have selected Kernel 2.2, and all2.2.gz

Please help me could be a defective hard drive? Thank you very much.

Regards

Pablo

There is no seperate installer for Old World machines. don't use the
kernel, nor all.gz in the .sit file, use the ones in /boot. I had not yet
updated the .sit file in RC1 (notice everything reference 8.2?).

Never has been able to install from hfs, afaik. I was able to CD install
on a 7600, after loading mesh.

Correct, stage1 only has ext2 support.

Nightmare installation on G3 beige

2003-03-16 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi, folks

No way to install (or upgrade) to Mdk 9,1 RC1 on my box G3 beige MT 266 (OldWorl).
All the problem that I found:

- The installer for OldWorld is out of date: still only for Mdk 8,2.
- The kernel for OldWorld machines is 2,4,18, so if you can arrive to boot the
installer, after no way to continue: the installer doesn't find the appropriate
modules on /lib
- No other kernel in the disk can recognize my cd drive (only the old kernel)
- no other kernel recognize the hfs partition to install directly from HD after
a copy of the distribution
- no kernel recognize the ext3 partition for the same purpose

I have experimented all that I can: no result. After a night of nightmare: stop,
basta.

Happy sunday ;-)
