seems correct to me for 440Mhz

195Mhz gives about 200-300 bogomips

 Can you try fbset?

1stfbset just the command and note the current mode.

# fbset

mode 640x480-66
 # D: 29.999 MHz, H: 34.720 kHz, V: 66.134 Hz
 geometry 640 480 640 1638 16
 timings 5 80 80 39 3 64 3
 rgba 5/10,5/5,5/0,0/0
endmode

Then try to set it to the same setting X is trying to use:

 fbset 1024x768-75

very good aspect of the consoles.

fbset

mode 1024x768-75
 # D: 78.746 MHz, H: 60.020 kHz, V: 75.025 Hz
 geometry 1024 768 1024 768 8
 timings 12699 176 16 28 1 96 3
 hsync high
 vsync high
 rgba 8/0,8/0,8/0,0/0
endmode

then I do
Xautoconfig3
Xautoconfig4

startx
bad blue-grey screen...
I kill it with control-command-backspace

then I see that it was the xpmac server
(XFree86-Xpmac-3.3.6-2mdk)
Running in mode 0, depth=32;req mode 17 depth=32
(...)

If I try with a XFree86 server (XFree86-server-4.0.3-7.1mdk)
the server crash and here in attachment is the log.

Thanks you a lot for your help

OK, it's the Apple Control video device. Does Xpmac work?

No in all cases.

Also have you tried using Xautoconfig?

This would be a good card for me to get info on, as we have nothing in the
installer right now to accomodate this card.

It is the standard power mac in 1996. A lot of linux ppc developpers
started coding with it. Paul MacKerras for example. But they have now G3
or G4. I am unable to found a config file on the net.

This is a good machine to do a server/firewall/...(good scsi, multiple
pci slots,...) so X is not absolutely necessary but it is always better :-)

Also, have you experimented with passing and video= kernel arguments or
 checking/unchecking NoVideo in BootX?

same results

i've been thinking about moving /boot over to the ide drive. is this all i
would have to do (besides telling bootx where to boot from) to bypass this
whole scsi issue? that way i could tell if it's really a scsi issue or
 something else with my machine.

Have you tried kernel 2.4.10-ben0 from ppckernel.org (benh-devel). it
works nicely for me on my full scsi PM 7500 (2 scsi disks: 1GO macOS +
3,2GO Linux)

Have you tried any other 2.4 series kernels (benH for instance)? There is

I just downloaded 2.4.10-ben0 from ppckernel.org and tried it.
It works ! At least the non-graphics apps (because I have another pb

Now I have a very old box with the most recent linux kernel, and a work
