Mandrkae 8.0 PPC is fairly new. This is the only mailing list for it. If nobody is answering it's pretty much a given that nobody knows the answer the your question. Running XFree86 shouldn't be signifcantly different on linuxppc from Mandrake. More than likely all you need is a XF86Config file for your video hardware. -- Ben Reser <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> http://ben.reser.org "Before you set out for revenge dig two graves." - Chinese Saying

Why would I direct it there? I'm using Mandrake 8 PPC, Not LinuxPPC. Maybe I should clarify. Where on Mandrake's conglomerate of websites and email list would I possibly get an answer to the question: "How do I use XFree86 on a Power Mac 4400?" xpmac is slow, unstable, and makes a bunch of garbage show on my screen. Hi Zack, Maybe you can try the linux-ppc mailinglist: http://lists.linuxppc.org/linuxppc-user/index.html greetings, Wijnand. -- >From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Zack) >To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >Subject: RE: PM 4400 >Date: zon, 23 sep 2001 17:06 > > Since I'm not getting any answer to this question, where should I direct it > other than the cookerppc list? > > [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Zack) wrote: > >>Has anyone successfully used xfree86 (any version) on a PowerMac 4400 > series machine? >> >>If so, wanna swap config files? >> >>Thx, >> >>-Zack >>-- >>_ >>I feel more like I do right now than I did a while ago. >> >> >> >>__ >>Your favorite stores, helpful shopping tools and great gift ideas. > Experience the convenience of buying online with Shop@Netscape! > http://shopnow.netscape.com/ >> >>Get your own FREE, personal Netscape Mail account today at > http://webmail.netscape.com/ >> >> >> > -- > _ > I feel more like I do right now than I did a while ago. > > > > __ > Your favorite stores, helpful shopping tools and great gift ideas. > Experience the convenience of buying online with Shop@Netscape! > http://shopnow.netscape.com/ > > Get your own FREE, personal Netscape Mail account today at > http://webmail.netscape.com/ > >
RE: PM 4400
Since I'm not getting any answer to this question, where should I direct it other than the cookerppc list? I did try the latest Debian 2.2 kernel and a Yellowdog 2.0 kernel to see if I could get further. Neither of those resulted in the kernel panic and they both allowed me to get to the CDROM, however, they both died before the Mandrake Install screen finished painting. Maybe the 48M of RAM in the 8500 isn't quite enough. When I get a chance, I'll see what happens if I add another 32 M. Rick -- [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Since you're using BootX, have you tried using a known good kernel from say, LinuxPPC to kick off the install? Any subsequent modules the installer tries to add will fail, but you may be able to proceed anyway. There really are only 2 integrated Mac SCSI controller options in the kernel source, mesh and mac53c94, but it could be an issue of flakiness when using them as a module, rather than part of a monolithic kernel. Re: PM 4400 Series SCSI module
Hi Zack, I ran into the same problem a couple of days ago on a 7200. I've had no luck in getting it to work and all the helpful advice I've received hasn't helped either. Hopefully it can be duplicated by the people at Mandrake and hopefully a fix will be able to be released. Patience is a virtue with these type of problems because they are hard to find and pinpoint. I'm content right now to wait, for a new build and try that out. Keep your ears open because I'm sure it will be fixed sooner rather then later.
