r128 = Rage 128 (a card that came after Mach64, with it's own issues :()
lamp = the iMac with the LCD, that looks like a desk lamp or whatever
nv = NVIDIA, rather than ATI card

It's covered in the new installer. Wasn't discovered until after the
final release of 8.2. I think it's in the FAQ.

Up to a point. The slot-loading ones went to r128. The "lamp" is nv and
now?

OK it works perfectly. Could it be possible to insert that trick in
the mandrake ppc ditribution, for instance as comment in the
XF86Config-4 file? I didn't find anything about it on the CD and for
sure, it is not easy to guess.

Also I thought that all the iMac were build the same, so that they all
got the same video card, i am wrong?

Thanks a lot to Stew Benedict. Aussi à Frederic Thais qui m'a répondu
en privé, mais je n'ai pas encore testé [Option "XkbModel"
"macintosh"], je le ferais sous peu.

Mach64 right? Add the option:

Option "composite_sync" "off"

In /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. Above the "BusID" line will work.

A 2nd, more extreme workaround is to rename:

/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libi2c.a

To some other name so it doesn't load.

I tried XFree86 4.2.0 (8.2 Mandrake CD - system 2.6.18-6mdk). You
were right : it works fine, much better than Xpmac. Except for one
thing : X blink the entire screen every 10 seconds, as if it switch
off during one second, then come back. Do you know this problem and
were it is comming from ?

Re: French keyboard on Mandrake 8.2

2003-02-02 Thread Dominique CORFA
going on with the subject "French keyboard on Mandrake 8.2 [iMac]"
summary: I still try to get french keyboard layout with a iMac.

in the file /etc/X11/xkb/rules/Xfree86
section "model layout = symbols"

I added the line:

---
* fr = fr(basic)
---

then I launch

---
setxkbmap -model powerpcps2 -layout fr
---

in the .xinitrc filefor xinit startup, or put

---
-model powerpcps2 -layout fr
---

in the file /etc/X11/xinit/Xkbmap for prefdm startup. Now I got
almost all the keys at the login stage. I have now to check for
CTRL-ALT-Fi and CTRL-ALT-DEL for switching to the console and to kill
X11, and try to suppress the auto-repeat (ARG) for the SPACE key.

Of course. Sorry.

SB>By XFree4, I was referring to XFree86, version 4.x.

I will check the version of my X server.

SB>What type of iMac, and what type of video adapter? We can probably

It's a iMac PowerPC G3 266 Mhz.
USB port, USB Keyboard Apple, USB mouse Apple.
Video: ATI Rage Pro Turbo with 6 Mo.
(order reference is M7345F)

I made a little progress. I found that "setxkbmap -model powerpcps2"
in a simple ``.xinitrc'' set a correct 'en' keyboard, but did not
found how I can adjust the french layout. So the ``azqwm,'' and some
other symbols are not on the correct key.

I would like also to set the standard CTRL-ALT-F1, F2... to switch to
the console.

Thanks for your help.

Yes MandrakeSoft is a French company, but I'm not French and have no
machines with French keyboards.

By XFree4, I was referring to XFree86, version 4.x.

What type of iMac, and what type of video adapter? We can probably
resolve the crash issue with a few more details.

I use Xpmac. I tried XFree86 but it crashed. I do not find XFree4 on
the Mandrake 8.2 PPC CD distribution I just buy. I find it strange
that the french keybord is not supported in this Mac distribution, as
Mandrake is a french company... I am trying to find my way in the
many keyboard manadgment method.
