RE: PMac 7300 - Install Issues

2001-10-06 Thread James Meade

Ok, I've finally managed to get this to install on the 7300. I ended up
using the 2.2.10-awacs kernel from LinuxPPC for the initial
installation. Currently, I'm running under the 2.4.10-benh0 kernel and
can get X4.0.3 to load up.

I do have a couple problems concerning X though...

First, X doesn't seem to recognize either my keyboard or my mouse.
However, the kernel seems to recognize them during the boot cycle.

Next, X issues the following error on loading:

--

Error while initializing the sound driver.
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such device)

The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

--

Any ideas?

James

For about a week now, I've been trying to get Mandrake to install on my
G3-upgraded 7300 system without much luck. So far, I've been reduced to
playing musical kernels to get it to recognize my SCSI hard drives,
let alone the CD-ROM drive. Can someone provide a basic walk-thru on how
 to get this to install?

As far as configuration goes, here's what I got:

 Hardware:

 Sonnet G3/400Mhz/1MB
 152MB RAM
IBM 2.1GB SCSI on SCSI bus 0, ID 0
Conner 4.2GB SCSI on SCSI bus 0, ID 1
Teac CD-R SCSI on SCSI bus 0, ID 3
ATI XclaimVR (rage pro) on PCI slot 1
IXMicro 128/8MB on PCI slot 3
 ADB keyboard/mouse

 Software:

 MacOS 9.0.4
 BootX 1.2.3
 Mandrake 8/PPC distro CDs

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

 Thanks,

 James

I have 2 ideas for you. Move the IBM away from SCSI id 0. There were
some reports on the linuxppc-user list that linux does not like having
harddrives at id=0 on those old machines.
I thought that BootX did not work reliably with MacOS 9.0.x but that may
only be on New World Machines.

What specifically is the problem ? Perhaps some detail such as I boot
with BootX from SCSI HD trying various kernels, the system gets to the
such-and-such stage and then complains about ..., the last message on
VT2,3 was ...

Good luck,

RE: PMac 7300 - Install Issues

2001-10-04 Thread Dan Willson

FWIW, I have an 8600/300 running RC1 just fine with an 18 GB UltraSCSI drive
on id0. It does use a 68 pin to 50 pin adapter and it is on the fast
internal bus -- don't know if this matters, but the Apple System Profiler
can't identify which SCSI bus it is attached to. Another anecdote that might
be helpful is that I used FWB Hard Disk Toolkit to replace the Apple drivers
and repartition the drive without reinstalling everything (leaving the space
unallocated before the Linux install). It uses BootX v1.2.3, just like my
9600/350 at home and a stock 7300/180 in the office. Don't know if this is
the latest and greatest, but it's what I'm using without problems.

FWIW, this 7300 and another one just like it in another workgroup have two
SCSI drives on id0 and id1 ... both have a small Mac OS partition for
booting, but the root partition is on the id0 drive in both units (IIRC,
both have the stock Seagate drives from other gutted 7300/180s). Hope I'm
not just lucky, but it worked for us just fine. FWIW, both of these machines
don't use FWB Hard Disk Toolkit, so maybe that doesn't help like I thought
at first.

One last problem I have encountered, though: are you sure the CD is A-OK? We
had this problem the first time around ... easily corrected by not being in
a hurry and calculating a checksum (could also be our Teac burner -- most
likely the same one you have? Ours is a CD-R55S hand-me-down and it can
make a mean set of coasters on occasion). The installer would start, then
bail when it couldn't find the CD drive. Hope James' problem is just as
easily solved.

Dan
