Re: new install
my powerbook was bought in january. i have been using mandrake since then and the only thing that dosen't work correctly is sleep and i am confident that this will be fixed in time. the only things you should worry about is video. the new resilution on the screen is 1280x854 which might cause problems with the default install (there is option for it yet) but might be as easy to fix as changing one line in your X config file. i think the 2 powerbooks have the same ethernet, airport, and soundcard. all three of these things work fine for me so they should for you. again, video is my only concern. good luck and let us know if you take the plunge and if there are any problems. mike From: Pozsar Balazs [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Michael Marcucio [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: new install Date: Sun, 9 Jun 2002 22:06:23 +0200 (MEST) On Sun, 9 Jun 2002, Michael Marcucio wrote: I just did a clean reinstall on my powerbook g4 667. everything went ok but Hi! What model do you own? I am about to buy one with the 800MHz cpu, but I am still unsure that I will be able to use all the hardware under linux. I have the most fears whether these will work: - the gigabit ethernet card - ati videocard - airport card - soundcard Please tell me if anything of the above works or doesn't for you. Basically all that's needed for this is the correct Modeline. It's not in the Installer because nobody has submitted it to Stew as of yet. I reworked it while I had Phil's on loan and it uses the XFree driver, rather than Xpmac. I look at /proc/fb to decide which method to use. Re: New Install
Hello Dave! Likely you are running into the same problem that I had. I am not sure about all New World macs but Quite a few around the era of the first iMacs have a problems with their Open Firmware that prevents them from booting anything that is outside the 8 gig barrier. I have three operating systems on my iMac but the problem was getting them all to boot. Finally, I found that in order to to boot them all I had to have everything fall within the first 8gigs. So on my system I have OS X.1, then pure Darwin, then the yaboot bootloader, and finally the root partition of Mandrake. I was told that as long as the boot loader fell within the first eight gigs Mandrake would boot. That did not work though. The boot loader and the entire root (/)partition MUST be within the 8GB barrier. This is a pain, but a fact of life. The iBook has a 20 gig HD. The first partition has Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X on it, then theres the 1MB Bootstrap partition, then / Swap and /home. I've tried entering setenv boot-device hd:10,\\:tbxi but the machine simply boots back into OS 9 or X. Anyone any idea what I'm doing wrong or how to fix it? No iBook's are affected by this problem. At least according to Apple. -- Ben Reser [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://ben.reser.org I wish it need not have happened in my time, said Frodo. Especially if it is one of the first G3 i books. If everything else is working and there is no configuration error in the yaboot.conf which you can reach by typing rescue when you get the yaboot prompt screen. Then go through the choices like you are going to install and then you will get to a console rescue screen eventually. Umm you said your iMac was Rev.B Bondi Blue. Which is listed on the site I gave you. The only known laptops to be affected are Powerbook G3's. Not iBooks. -- Ben Reser [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://ben.reser.org I wish it need not have happened in my time, said Frodo. So do I, said Gandalf, and so do all who live in such times.
