My suggestion is to buy spices at Olie's if one is local to you. The
Olie's brand of ginger for instance costs 97 cents for a jar and it's
six times the quantity of MacCormack's spices. This is often the case
with most other spices sold at Olie's too.

 hi,

Bought ginger and nutmeg yesterday, at grocery store.
I could only find the McCormick brand, and i paid almost $5 for each.
And, I believe jars are only 1.6 ounces.
It is ridiculous that spices should cost this much, and for so very
little.

[CnD] buying spices

2012-09-22 Thread Jamey Cook
When I moved into my first apartment, an elderly friend gave me all
her spices and a few other things! (She was moving into an assisted
living place where they served meals.) I agree with the Health Food
Store buying in bulk suggestion. I often buy larger quantities from
the bulk bins to fill up my spice containers. Thanks for the tip
about Trader Jo's spices being cheaper, will have to check into that!

I just went to the website and I don't see anything about the size of the
jar or bottle. Also, most of the spices are blends, not just plain cinnamon
or nutmeg, though some of the blends sound very appealing and I love the
names.

Claudia, go to

http://www.auntiearwenspices.com

There you will pay five dollars, but you will get eight-ounce jars.
The proprietess is Jane Sibley, and she will provide braille labels,
if you need them. I wasn't certain if she was still maintaining the
website, but I wrote to her a few months ago, and she said the site
was being revamped. I believe you can shop by category or by
alphabetical listing.

Jean, my apologies, the size of the jars is 110 ml, and I believe that
converts to 6 ounces rather than 8. Math was never my strong suit. I
know 2 + 2 = 7, and that's as far as I can go. Sheepish grin. Here
is what she says about the Jars:

All spice blends are packaged in sturdy 110ml glass jars.

Jane also says if you don't see what you are looking for in her A to Z
listing, please e-mail her and let her know what you are looking for.

I love some of the names of her blends, also. Some make me laugh.

Claudia,
I agree with you on the spices complaint. I think it's ridiculous they
cost so much, however, if you don’t use them every day, they'll last you a
good long while. I've done baking for my family and friends for Christmas
for the last couple of years. I finally ran out of ginger this year and had
to buy more. That was because I made several batches of gingersnaps. That
ginger previously, had lasted me about three years.

Take Care,

[CnD] online sources for buying spices.

2012-09-22 Thread ajackson212
Hi everyone,

Another good online source for buying spices at reasonable prices is Penzey's.
They have stores across the country and also a web site. it is:

http://www.penzeys.com

Their spices are good quality and reasonably priced. You also have a choice as
to the quantity you purchase. The site is also accessible with a screen reader.

Blessings,
