Re: [CnD] Frustrations in the kitchen sometimes, and Blueberries
I know there's a rule about how long dropped food can stay on the floor, but I can't remember if it's five minutes or five seconds. I usually look for the dropped food with my hands. I noticed people who help me use a broom and dust pan. That makes more sense for a blind person, except for the dust part. I can understand doing that in your own home, but not in someone else's. If you tell someone, specifically, to put things back where you got them from, and if they don't know where something should go, ask you, they should do as you ask. If they don't follow directions on a regular basis, and continue to put things where they don't belong after you have brought this to their attention numerous times, then you are justified in not having them work for you anymore. Also, let their employer, if they are working for an agency, know why you let them go. --- Be positive! Isn't it fun to think you have them all, and then later when you've forgotten all about them, you step on one so you have a blue spot on the floor and your footwear. What brings this up is that this morning I knocked over my container of pistachios while I was nibbling on a few. Well, first I had to put my guide dog in her crate, and my pet dog outside because my guide dog is a lab so she thinks vacuum cleaner is in her job description. Then I crawled around for about 15 minutes picking up pistachios. I actually did very well because when the dogs were allowed back, I only heard about 8 or 9 crunches. I hope this gives you all a good laugh because I really don't think I am the only one who has this problem so I think you can sympathize and maybe elaborate on the subject. And I might as well ask a question. If something like a blueberry, pistachio or tomato falls on the floor but has not been squashed, do you throw it out or do you wash it of and use it? Re: [CnD] Frustrations in the kitchen sometimes
Yeah, I fired a housekeeper because she kept putting things where she thought they should go and I couldn't find them. Since then I've trained roommates to find things, and there's always a bit of a learning curve. I can understand it, as before I lost my sight I put things wherever they fit too. -Original Message- From: Ann Smith via Cookinginthedark [mailto:cookinginthedark@acbradio.org] Sent: Saturday, May 02, 2015 11:38 AM To: [cookinginthedark@acbradio.org]; Penny Reeder Subject: Re: [CnD] Frustrations in the kitchen sometimes Good morning, I was fit to be tied the other day when I could not find my cookie sheet bake me a pizza. Don't you guys love it when sighted people move things and don't tell you just were they happen to have moved it? My home health people are really good about moving things and not telling me you try to tell them please let me know where you moved insert item here. I do that as well, I put the utensils that I'm using very close by or in the sink. As far as cleaning up any messes in the kitchen I start a sink full of soapy water, and clean whatever I am using as it's being used up so that way when I'm through cooking most or all of it is just about cleaned up and put away. Cranberries are just as bad as blueberries, by the way! The absolute worst thing to clean up though is pyrex! [CnD] cleaning up broken glass
When I drop a glass or a casserole dish, I always listen more than try to stop the fall. I usually can hear where the big pieces slide to. I get my suction sweeper with the hose and start going over the entire floor inch by inch on my hands and knees. With a very light touch, I can pick up the big pieces and the sweeper gets the rest. This seems extreme, but after it is over I know that I will not step on a piece of glass with bare feet. On another note, the glass usually spreads out in a pattern and you can anticipate where the pieces will be. After a few times of breaking glasses, I only have plastic water glasses in the kitchen. ___ Cookinginthedark mailing list Cookinginthedark@acbradio.org http://acbradio.org/mailman/listinfo/cookinginthedark
