Re: [CnD] OT: safely unclogging kitchen sink drain

2018-02-22 Thread Lisa P. Geibel via Cookinginthedark

Hi Anna,

Thanks much. I'm really new at all of this. Can you tell me a ratio of
the white vinegar to water so I'll know how much to pour down it? Also
is Zep a liquid or what? Does it have an odor? I have to ask these
things as I have no sense of smell and my husband's very sensitive to
things like that. Thanks much.

have also used Zep which can be found at home depot.

Hi,

I'm sorry for this slightly off topic post, but we all do need a working
kitchen sink drain for cooking to clean the vegetables, meat, wash
dishes or constantly wash our hands when cooking and other things. Ours
is draining very slowly and I know there are products that you can buy
to help with this, but I hear they're really not safe to use. I can't
believe there's not at least one that a blind person can safely and
independently use, so I'm asking you guys? I had heard that they had
some Draino sticks or something like that and thought that might work,
but I don't know the name of them and neither did the person that told
me about them. If anyone has any experience with this sort of thing,
please give me some tips as I really don't want to call a plumber out
till I absolutely have to. If I buy drinking alcohol and pour it down
the drain, it helps, which I didn't do, but there was some old bottles
around here that I did pour as neither my husband nor I drink alcohol.
Again, sorry for the slightly off topic post, but I'd really appreciate
any and all help anyone could give? Thank you.

Re: [CnD] MicroWave oven recommendations.

2017-08-21 Thread Lisa P. Geibel via Cookinginthedark

Hi,

Our old large micro went out and we're going to get the Braille one,
which is kind of pricey from Maxi Aids after getting a cheaper model
from Wal-Mart and it not working. Has anyone had experience with the
large Braille one from Maxi Aids? Hoping it will work when we get it.

Ok, first, I know about the talking one, use to own the "TEMO," which had been
sold by many stores for as little as $79, but, ours, is going out, starting to smell
electronically, so I need recommendations for ones which are blind friendly. I don't need
something miniature, :) but good sized, but user friendly for us to use by your
definition, or, easily modified to use, or maybe even with some kind of braille overlay
either makeable or constructible. :) I presume that most of the later ones have menus of
some type which aren't easily feasible without sight, so, recommendations are requested!
We have an LG 1200 watt now which we made a braille overlay for.
THANK YOU!

Re: [CnD] cooking pasta or rice a roni in the crock pot

2017-05-28 Thread Lisa P. Geibel via Cookinginthedark

Hi Lisa,
SMILE No, at the moment we don't. Ours finally died, we bought a new one
and it came not working, so we're saving our money to buy a Braille one
in July and I was just looking for ideas till then, but it is summer, so
maybe we'll stick with the cold stuff. LOL I'm actually trying rice a
roni in it now, so we'll see what happens.

Hi, Lisa. Not sure how well this would work. Usually pasta even the

use to get things going before throwing the pasta into the crock?

Hi,
Hubby and I are in a bit of a strange situation for the moment and I
was just wondering if it's possible to cook either pasta, boxed
macaroni and cheese or rice a roni in the crock pot? I heard someone
used to make macaroni and cheese that way, but I don't know any
details. Any help would be greatly appreciated? Thanks.

2017-05-27 Thread Lisa P. Geibel via Cookinginthedark

Hi Lori,
Sounds good as I could do things with plain rice. I know the pasta takes
30 to 45 minutes or so I was told on high. Do you have any idea if the
rice takes about that long and on the same setting or anything? Thanks.

[CnD] question from a new member about accessible cooking device?

2017-05-13 Thread Lisa P. Geibel via Cookinginthedark

Hi,
I just joined this list and have a question about the New Wave oven? I'm
told it's nice, but the person I heard about it from can't tell me how
accessible it is? If anyone here has one or knows anything about it,
please reply or message me privately? Thanks. I'm asking about this as
our trusty work horse of an old microwave died finally, we bought a new
one, which would have been accessible had it worked and are just looking
into options. Right now, they are these as a possibility, the Magic Chef
talking microwave and my best girlfriend's boyfriend found a braille one
somewhere. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated? It's
going to be a hard search as we need this to be able to hold a gallon
tall container or a gallon wide container and I think they're making
them all fairly small these days? Thanks.
