[Coworking] Deskpass

2015-09-01 Thread Sam Rosen
Hello Friends!

Just wanted to share that last week we announced a new way to cowork here
in Chicago. It's called Deskpass and it's one
membership that for one price gives you access to over 25 spaces here in
Chicago. Right now it's only available business days and a member can only
access each space up to 5 times a month, so they can check out a new space
every week or every day.

We think it's a great gateway for folks to discover coworking, find great
spaces to work and meet likeminded folk. We're just in Chicago (for now)
and we're going to be marketing pretty heavily and trying to "make the pie
bigger" bringing more awareness to all the fabulous spots in the windy city
while we work out the kinks and build a great experience for both members
and spaces.

I'm posting her for a few reasons. First off, I've proudly been a part of
this community for a long time and wanted to share the concept directly
with ya'll. Secondly, if this is something you think is exciting please
share it! While we're in Chicago now and focused on making something
awesome, I'd love to hear other folks in other cities that might be
interested in the concept.

Hopefully I will see some of you in Toronto in the next few weeks!

Thanks,
Sam

[Coworking] Re: Example of a Membership agreement?

2015-04-09 Thread Sam Rosen
Hello Beautiful Coworking Friends,

We recently created Desktime Open Source to make some of our agreements and
templates available to the coworking community. Which is something I have
been wanting to do for a looong time.

I wanted to share the first piece we’re prepped, the Space License
Agreement we developed for The Coop. It’s annotated so you can see how and
why we did certain things. You can download and review it for your own use
here (but check with your lawyers, please!). When doing demos for Desktime
and in general it's the most requested additional information we share.
Hopefully it helps someone moving forward!

http://desktimeapp.com/spacelicense

Let me know how it works for you. What other stuff would you want to see?

Best,
Sam

We ran a couple Ubiquity routers at The Coop. They were our saving grace after
a bunch of trials with other hardware. We've got two AP's and we have no issues
on average managing 200+ connections.

They are cheap, Ubiquity is famous for disruptive pricing. At maximum
capacity we hope to have 100 members with 2 AP's running (may add a third).
The AP's have some nice features like automatic load balancing of traffic and
zero-handoff for seamless roaming between AP's.

The nice thing about UniFi is they have a software controller (as opposed to
hardware) that can even run on a cloud server, it's free as well whereas
Cisco etc charge licensing fees for their software.

Time will tell how they perform but reviews have been great. Many people
reccomend them over Ruckus for instance and for a coworking facility, you
 probably don't need much more.

2014-02-02 Thread Sam Rosen
For what it's worth Desktime has a member directory built into the app so
it shows members the folks that are in the space today and those that are
part of the community, but aren't booked in the space. Since it's the same
system that managing billing and scheduling we've had great success at the
member directory being up-to-date and utilized.

https://www.desktimeapp.com/features/members

At NextSpace we have a member's also have wall that stays current with
folks pictures. They add a little new symbol so folks can quickly see new
members of the community.

Re: [Coworking] Hosting a gallery showing

2013-09-09 Thread Sam Rosen
This is some awesome advice, Ashley.

On Sep 7, 2013, at 1:51 PM, Ashley Proctor ash...@foundery.is wrote:

 Hi Andy

I happen to run an Art Gallery and a Coworking Space in Toronto, Canada.
Creative Blueprint's CB Gallery is located within The Foundery Buildings and
is attached to our coworking and event facilities.

 http://creativeblueprint.ca
 http://foundery.is

Creative Blueprint is about to celebrate our 7 year anniversary later this
month, and we certainly have learned a lot!

The most important point would be that running an art gallery / exhibition
space is a completely independent business.
Hanging artwork on the walls of your coworking space is another thing all
 together.

If you are looking to provide local artists with the opportunity to exhibit
work while decorating your coworking space, first of all, be honest in your
 advertising or 'Call for Submissions'.

An Art Gallery will curate exhibitions, produce promotional materials,
advertise, host an opening reception and professionally document each
 exhibition.
A Gallery also connects clients, collectors and representatives from public
institutions with the artists and their work.
A Gallery also manages sales, processes commission and handles packing,
insuring and shipping the art work.

If you are simply looking for an artist to provide work to decorate your
space, you must be clear about your level of involvement.
There are many artists (especially emerging artists) who would love the
opportunity to get some exposure for their work, and there are also many
artists who need a safe place to store a completed exhibition.
You just need to be clear about what you will provide and who is responsible
 for what.

 Some things to consider...

EVERY ARTIST NEEDS A CONTRACT IN WRITING
This could be a simple document but it needs to exist for each and every
piece of artwork you bring into the space.
Photograph the work and attach it to the contract right at the beginning of
 EVERY exhibit installation.

You should outline the following details in your contract:
 Artist name and contact info
 Installation date removal date
Public exhibition dates (outline public access hours)
 Reception dates times
Document photograph the artwork itself (size, media, condition of work)

 You should also define:
Who is responsible for installing the work?
Who is responsible for patching / painting / repairing the walls after an
 exhibition?
Who is responsible for insuring the work while on display?
What is the insurance value of the work?
What kind of security is offered to protect the work?
What are the terms and conditions regarding photographing the work?
 Who will document the exhibition?
Who will advertise / promote the exhibit?
Who will pay for the reception expenses?
Is the work available for sale? What is the sale price of the work with
 without frame?
Does commission apply to the sale? If so, how much?
Who handles the sale of the work?
Who packages and delivers the work?
When must all the work be removed from the space?

If you are covering all of these details like an Art Gallery would, it makes
sense to charge an exhibition fee and/or commission.
If you expect the artist to cover all of these details expenses, you better
not be looking to charge anything.

So if this all sounds like A LOT OF WORK, you might also consider partnering
with an established gallery or local arts organization who would handle most
of the programming details (the way CB Foundery are partnered).
Or maybe you can host long-term exhibits (1-2 months) instead of the typical
1-2 weeks to minimize the workload.

I'm convinced that the benefits of the artistic and entrepreneurial
communities colliding in one location are worth the effort, but there are
only so many hours in one day...

I'd be happy to answer any other questions you might have.

 Best of luck,

[Coworking] Re: Hosting a gallery showing

2013-09-08 Thread Sam Rosen
Hey Andy,

Congrats on the growth! We've run multiple gallery shows out of The Coop.
It's a really great way to bring new folks into your space that haven't
been. A couple things I'd consider...

- You're not a professional gallery. Make sure the artists involved know
that and keep expectations honest. If this is your first time putting up
work, there is a good chance that you won't sell any. That's okay! Just
make sure the artists putting in their time know that going into it.

- Get the show hung and on the walls multiple days before you have an
opening. Especially your first show, make sure you have a few days to see
how things work and deal with any unexpected issues that come up.

- Have a clear date that you expect that show to come down. You don't want
to hang on to artist's work after the show is over as it's a liability and
easy to damage. Make sure you have a plan to take down the work BEFORE you
put up the show.

- It's always a great time to document your space, so make sure you take
photos!

- Lastly, make sure people know that they are in a Coworking space! We
printed vinyl on the wall when you walked in that explained what are space
was and how folks can take advantage of the space. We have postcards,
typically make a brief announcement and make it clear so there is some
benefit to the space.

I'm sure there is more! I am happy to get on a phone call to chat if you
have any other questions. I think the opportunity to hang nice work is a
really wonderful thing. Since you aren't focused on selling work, you have
the chance to put up interesting pieces of art that are meaningful to you
and don't necessarily have other venues that might get as much traffic as
your space.

Sam

[Coworking] Creative Collisions

2013-05-19 Thread Sam Rosen
Hey All..

This might be crazy, but I've been trying to articulate the benefits of
coworking to folks that have spent very little to no time at all in a coworking
community. I keep referencing the idea of Creative Collisions in my
conversations and thought it would make sense to reach out to the community.

There's always going be the natural connections in a shared workspace. A small
business owner can immediately find someone to help them with their dire need
for a new website, without even leaving their workplace. That's amazing. But,
to me the real magic is when folks meet and it sparks an idea, a business, a
new thing... something that never would of happened.

I'd love to hear your stories born out of this collision whether it be simply
an idea, thought, product, business or movement. Anybody have any good stories?

Happy Monday!

Luckily, large parts of Brooklyn were relatively unaffected-- including the

Before I knew it, New Work City had a temporary home in Brooklyn. I put the

New faces mixed with old, but the spirit was no different. Good coffee was
discovered. Bodegas were raided. Beers were purchased. We were very much

So far, nobody's complained; nobody's asked for a refund; nobody's been

[Coworking] Coworking Video

2012-06-05 Thread Sam Rosen
Hey Gang,

Last month Desktime http://desktimeapp.com toured six spaces in Chicago
and sat down to interview the owners from
Enerspacehttps://www.desktimeapp.com/spaces/341-enerspace-chicago,
8on7 https://www.desktimeapp.com/spaces/222-8on7,
Topicshttps://www.desktimeapp.com/spaces/273-topicsand
coLab https://www.desktimeapp.com/spaces/245-colab-evanston. We wanted to
hear their unique perspective on the coworking movement. Wanted to know
why, and how, they became involved. This video, The
Owners,https://vimeo.com/43439449is just a slice of what we saw… We are
working on a three part series, but
this one is from an owners view.

[Coworking] Re: Scheduling - Billing - Merch. Acct./Bookeeping Workflow --How do you do it?

2012-03-24 Thread Sam Rosen
Hey Ya'll

Just want to throw Desktime into the thread. We launched our first space on
the software last week and we're adding a few over the next couple weeks.
We have more information here: http://hello.desktimeapp.com there is a form
at the bottom of the page and we'll reach out to you as soon as we're ready
to roll.

We're taking are of a lot of the functionality that people have mentioned
and we're excited to show you what we've been working on!

Best,
Sam

location and offers a much more broad array of workspace/office
hoteling/ meeting room options. It is clear to me that our current
MindBody-QB combo. is not the solution.

I need serious help figuring out best practices (cloud based
preferably) for the Room/Workstation Reservation to Invoicing to
Payment to Bookeeping workflow. Any suggestions?

What software do you use and what is working best for you?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

[Coworking] Hello from Chicago

2012-03-20 Thread Sam Rosen
Hello Everyone,

I wanted to announce some exciting things we've been working on here in Chicago
related to coworking.

A couple weeks ago at GCUC Desktime announced our space management software for
coworking spaces. We've spent the last 3 months working on what we believe is
the best solution for very small to very large spaces to help handle the
day-to-day administrative tasks associated with running a shared space. The
software we'll be releasing soon will help manage inquiries, applications,
booking, billing and communication; making it painless to keep track of leads,
bill people monthly, accept credit cards, reach out to old members and a whole
bunch more. Best yet, the software will be white-labeled so you can have your
own branded version of Desktime for your space that supports unique brand/

Our first customer, 1871, a 50,000 sq ft coworking space opening here in
Chicago is going online with Desktime's software this week, and we expect to
have a few other spaces up and running in the weeks to follow. If this is
something you'd be interested in learning more about, or if you are interested
in beta testing, take a look at our site at http://hello.desktimeapp.com and
fill out the signup form at the bottom of the page.

We've built this software because, at the end of the day, we couldn't find an
elegant solution to help us manage our own coworking space, The Coop. Speaking
of The Coop, I'm thrilled to also let y'all know that we're expanding to an
additional floor at our current location and adding 20 more desks, 2 private
offices and private video conferencing/phone booths for our members! We just
launched a brand new website as well, which we are very proud of and hope
you'll check out at http://coworkchicago.com

Lastly, if you aren't on our directory (http://desktimeapp.com) we would love
to add your space. We've recently rolled out international support and now have
over 250 fantastic spaces from over 20 countries listed. We've received
thoughtful and positive feedback on the directory from our current users and
are happy to say that we are connecting spaces with new users every day!

Alright, that's it. It was fantastic meeting some of you at GCUC. We're so
excited for the future of coworking and thrilled to be along for the ride.

Best,
Sam

Hey there fellow co-workers! It's looking like I'm going to be in your
'hood next weekend (Sept 16-18) and I'm wondering if any of the fine
folks on this list know of or run a space somewhere near Wicker Park,
where I'll be staying - I'm told by Chicago friends that's a good area
to stay in, unless some of you locals have a better idea.

Let's chat about coworking stuff, nerd stuff, design development
stuff - and some good bars to check out while I'm in town.

[Coworking] Desktime. Now in Austin!

2011-03-09 Thread Sam Rosen
Hello Coworking Community,

I've taken a while to introduce myself to the community and I want to take this
moment to finally do so. My name is Sam Rosen and I run a coworking space in
Chicago called The Coop.

A few months ago we launched Desktime in Chicago. It's a simple directory that
makes it easy for the average person to find shared creative workspaces by the
day, week or month. We already have over 40 listed in Chicago actively using
our site to connect great people to great spaces.

Desktime is committed to building the best online directory. We plan to expand
this service one city at a time so we can continue to make more meaningful
connections. So we are hereby thrilled to announced the launch of Desktime in
Austin. Have a looksee: http://desktimeapp.com! We can't wait to hear what you
think!

You guys are the reason coworking exists, and you are the reason it is great.
After meeting several of you on this list, I'm amazed at the passion and
commitment to harvesting this new way of work, I'm thrilled to share this with
you.

See you at the Unconference tomorrow,

Thanks,
Sam Rosen

[Coworking] Re: COOP Chicago Now Open!

2009-01-15 Thread Sam Rosen
Hey Chris,

Thanks for the note. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I
appreciate reaching out to us. I was lucky enough to spend a little
time in Brooklyn at the Coworking space out there. We've been running
a web/design firm in Chicago for the last (almost) 4 years. Over the
last few years I have had two units one space to live and one space to
work, adjoined by a giant red door. Over time the weight of having
both spaces together became a burden.

At this point our team decided this would be a lovely office/studio
for a coworking space. We have an excellent network of designers and
developers around here through www.onedesigncompany.com and
www.thepostfamily.com
. There also isn't a very creative space like this in Fulton Market
(Chicago, really) that has this open door- coworking policy, so we
have decided to give it a whirl.

We're off to a good start, a couple people have been in and out and we
seem to have a ton of interest, so I am really looking forward to see
what happens. At the same time we run or business through the space,
so that is helpful.

If you have any other thoughts or questions please let me know. We
look forward to being active in this awesome community and I
appreciate the outreach.

I hope it's warmer there, then it is over here!

Cheers,
Sam

 Hey Sam, that's great.

The pictures look nice. I haven't come across your story here on
group. Forgive me if I missed it. So what's the story of COOP
 Chicago?
Coworking communities have been described here before as a pizza. How
 do you guys make yours?

One of the tough nuts to crack for me is how to reach out to enough
members in advance of opening that can give you a strong foundation
 to
launch. What did you guys do for that?

 Here's to a successful opening!

 Chris
