Re: [Coworking] Gay coworking space

2011-10-19 Thread Hillary Hartley
My gut reaction is that you've done it right letting it happen organically.
IMO, the best, safest spaces (coworking or otherwise) are always the ones that
set the tone and have strong ties to a community. You can do that without
labeling yourself just by setting the tone, expectations of your members, and
walking the walk.

My two cents as a queer former space owner...

Just wanted to know what people thought of gay or gay-friendly
coworking spaces. We have a space called The Soho Collective in the

only natural that a higher-than-average percentage of our guys are
gay. And we've found it's been a plus: gay people feel comfortable and
able to communicate openly, and we only want gay-friendly people
around anyway, so it's sort of set the tone. I just wondered if anyone
thought a designated gay coworking space would work or whether we've
got it right letting it happen organically. Your comments please.

It sounds to me like an awesome example of organic growth. A lot of the
kinds of identity concerns you have require trust between members, and
that's 100% the case in *any* coworking space, gay straight or otherwise.

The strongest communities I've seen around the world, regardless of their
specific identity, consistently make it a point for people to be learn to
trust one another. If you got that part right, everything else is easy :)
