[Coworking] Re: New to the group, new to coworking!

2017-10-20 Thread Mark
Hi Alex,

Welcome to the group!

Like you, I've only come across coworking recently and I'm now in the
process of absorbing everything related to the subject. I'm looking to open
a space here in the UK and I can confirm that you have entered a world (and
a Google Group) of some incredibly supportive, open and friendly people!

One of the things that has been suggested to me was to attend a conference,
so I'm heading to the Coworking Europe Conference next month - not sure if
there are any near you?

Anyway, best of luck with your learning - I hope you find this group as
useful as I have.

All the best

Mark

So this is my first official post here and I am in Beverly Hills, MI. I am
looking at opening up a space in Birmigham, so not too far from you in

notes and learning from the conference. I would also like to shamelessly
jump on the visit band wagon and someday stop in to see Tom's and

I have never heard of Koala but you can bet I'm going to look it up. I
also know that there was a woman who wanted to start something in West
Bloomfield that was women-centric. There is Paper Street in Ferndale,
VenturePark in Royal Oak, Byte and Mortar in Troy and Metro Work Space in
Livionia and Farmington. Not to mention all the other ones in Detroit.

Happy to connect with any and all!

2014-05-12 Thread AJ Kelley
Pleased to meet you Anamarie,

Birmingham is my favorite city to hang out in, and a perfect place for a
coworking space. I hate that I missed GCUC, it seems like it would have
been very helpful and empowering. Was there anything in particular that you
were able to take away and put into use immediately? I know there was a
lot of amazing information given.

I think the woman you were talking about is Angela Samuels and Visionary
Meetings http://visionarymeetings.com/home/. She has a great concept for
West Bloomfield directed toward woman and a space with onsite daycare.

Seems like there's going to be a lot of options for people to get their
work done in the near future, which is great. I'd love to have some kind of
network together to allow our community members to experience other
coworking communities, perhaps share resources and opportunities for our
members to grow.

Thanks Toni and congrats on your new space in Houston. I hope coworking takes

More coworking starts up there.

I checked out the previous posts. Very helpful, but I'd still like to hear if

Re: [Coworking] Re: New to the group

2012-04-04 Thread Alex Hillman
Regarding Medical Government:

I've spent time with people from both of these industries, with mixed results,
talking about how they can benefit from coworking. One of my common selling
points is to urge them to look for the admin days in their schedule and make
them happen from Indy Hall. The benefit is taking what's otherwise a
drudge-worthy point in their schedule and making it something to look forward
to.

We've got a member who's a private practice doctor. We have a couple of yoga
instructors on the roster, too.

We've had a good amount of interaction with government too, but not in the way
you might be looking for. We've actually seen government employees look at our
models for interacting collaboratively with excitement and find ways to apply
them to new initiatives in city hall. What's awesome is that they've done it
successfully, even if it's small successes.

They get involved at an event level. We've hosted and helped organize some
hackthons that involved civic leaders, and it's been extremely valuable to have
them at the table. My hope is that over time, more people who work at City Hall
can spend time at a place like Indy Hall, and we can learn more from each other
about how to make our city better (since that's core to our mission
(http://dangerouslyawesome.com/2012/04/the-virtues-of-indy-hall/)).

A massive portion of Philadelphia's open data initiative and other related
public sector initiatives look to our models of coworking for inspiration of
how to interact outside of city hall and collaborate better with other
departments as well as the private sector. It's been really inspiring to watch
them put these ideas to work :)

 Regarding Medical Government:

I've spent time with people from both of these industries, with mixed
results, talking about how they can benefit from coworking. One of my common
selling points is to urge them to look for the admin days in their schedule
and make them happen from Indy Hall. The benefit is taking what's otherwise a
drudge-worthy point in their schedule and making it something to look forward
 to.

We've got a member who's a private practice doctor. We have a couple of yoga
 instructors on the roster, too.

We've had a good amount of interaction with government too, but not in the
way you might be looking for. We've actually seen government employees look
at our models for interacting collaboratively with excitement and find ways
to apply them to new initiatives in city hall. What's awesome is that they've
done it successfully, even if it's small successes.

They get involved at an event level. We've hosted and helped organize some
hackthons that involved civic leaders, and it's been extremely valuable to
have them at the table. My hope is that over time, more people who work at
City Hall can spend time at a place like Indy Hall, and we can learn more
from each other about how to make our city better (since that's core to our
 mission).

A massive portion of Philadelphia's open data initiative and other related
public sector initiatives look to our models of coworking for inspiration of
how to interact outside of city hall and collaborate better with other
departments as well as the private sector. It's been really inspiring to
watch them put these ideas to work :)

Like - small businesses formed out of a
crowd of talented solo workers/freelancers/consultants. Have you ever
 seen that where you cowork?

That's what we're paying for access to! :)

Coworking isn't a flat surface and a wi-fi. It's a gym membership for
your brain.

But all metaphors aside, that's exactly how it works for my team. And
it got started at the space.

Hey,

I heard about Indy Hall through a conference I attended in Philly. The
conference was Podcamp Philly (a grassroots new media/blogging/
podcasting conference). Indy Hall had an open house and a party the
night of the conference and so naturally, they got some folks from the
conference. Smart move.

Then when I moved up to Philly, I already knew about the space, so I
signed up.

I would definitely pick Alex Hillman's brain on how to get the word
out (he's active on this list). He's one of the main forces behind
Indy Hall's success.

I know most of Indy's membership gets here through word of mouth.
