[Coworking] Re: Workshops
Through our network we get approached by people wanting to give workshops in our coworking location. If the workshop is open to our own members we are try to create a combined member event / workshop. Members who opt in see this as a one of the key benefits of being part of a coworking space. In this model we do not charge for the space. For the person giving the workshop it's a win because they get the space free of charge and we can supply a number of interested participants through our member network, We try to schedule an event like this about once a month. If the workshops are not for our members but it is purely about using the space for others we'll charge a fee for that and would have no further involvement. You do have to watch out here because it may be welcome from a revenue perspective but at the same time you have to check the response from your members - they may find it a nuisance (if they can't use the space for the duration of the workshop, or if it's noisy etc). Since we target freelancers / contractors / independent workers there are many themes that can be of interest for a workshop: networking, sales / marketing / acquisition, social media, business planning, administration / fiscal / legal, etc... In this market a lot of interest goes to the first three topics. Good luck! --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Coworking group. [Coworking] Re: Workshops
We also offer mostly member based groups and connecting opportunities such as a lunch time gathering for entrepreneurs. If we can find a great guest speaker, we bring them in, but usually it is someone who wants to come in and speak about a book or topic related to their business. We select people based on what they have to offer our membership. I think the events really bring the community together and encourage people to network. Again, it is a win for the speaker, so we don't tend to pay for them. We are building our professional program and listening to what members want. We also look to partner with organizations and promote them having events in our space that our members can attend. Again win for us to get more people in the space and win for our members to get more resources and win for the organizations/groups as they get connection to our membership that attend. Good luck. [Coworking] Re: Workshops
I would find someone who is already offering said workshops - a local association or training company, perhaps - and form a relationship with them to host the events. Right now we don't have many events other than user group meetings or CoLab-specific events. We have lunch and learn several times per month, one of which I organize. I teach Drupal CMS and other New Media classes, like podcasting and videblogging. http://drupaleasy.com The price is really dependent on the subject, audience, experience level, etc. For private tutoring I normally quote $75 an hour, or anywhere from $125-325 for an all-day (8 hour) group session. I shoot for groups between 10 and 20 people, but we have taught 30-person sessions. Unfortunately, I can't teach the large sessions in our coworking space, because the space does not have that kind of capacity right now. Some training can garner thousands of dollars per day per trainee, but many sessions like that require a big-name trainer or a computer lab with fully licensed software. Our School District's Vo-Tech center is a few blocks away, and they offer classes like that in Final Cut Pro, Photoshop and Flash. Since Adobe and Apple have certified software- specific certifications, there are more hoops to jump through to be a certified training center. On the other hand, a survey by our state- wide Digital Media Alliance of industry professionals says that the certification doesn't count as much as your portfolio and job experience. If your space has A/V available (projector, screen, etc) and partner with catering or a local shop for providing coffee and other refreshments, boxed lunch, that would the space more attractive to me as a trainer.
