[css-d] IE 5.0

2006-08-14 Thread Terry O'Leary
Hi

Two things to ask today (thanks to people who answered my li:hover
query) , what are peoples opinion on IE 5.0 and the need to consider
its lack of CSS support during designing a site (i.e should i not be
considered now as its kind of obsolete?) and does anyone know a site
apart from browsercam where i could test the site as i have problems
with rollovers i need to be able to interact with the page not just
view a screen shot... or do one of you have access to IE 5.0 and can
you tell me / screen shot the rollover actions on the menu at
www.bulgin.co.uk/HTMLDocs/test.html

Thanks

Depends on your audience. Generically, I still allow for it because it is
still used, but its usage is minimal so I guess it's a judgement call.

BrowserCam now has VCN access where you can log into the servers and
test things like JavaScript.

It's your own choice, but it's generally not too difficult to make the
adjustments necessary to support this browser (assuming IE5/Win is what you're
talking about).

does anyone know a site
apart from browsercam

Again, assuming IE5/Win, how about your own site/computer?

Dunno.
and does anyone know a site

If you are on a PC, you can download ie 5 and 5.5 from http://evolt.org/
or do one of you have access to IE 5.0
I do not have 5.0 at the moment.
Here are 2 screen shots in 5.5 on xp

  and can
you tell me / screen shot the rollover actions on the menu at

And here are ie captures from browsercam (win/2000 and xp)
http://www.browsercam.com/public.aspx?proj_id=276699
And a screen shot in Opera9.01(xp)

Why don't you download the standalones? That's what I use for IE5. You
can get the standalone versions from evolt, and there's a tutorial on
making them work at positioniseverything.net

Works great. And it's free.

Terry, get the free VMware Player or Microsoft Virtual PC and install an old
version of Windows in a virtual machine. Then you will be able to test any
older Windows browsers with no hassles. You can set up any number of virtual
machines (clone the first one to make it easier) with different
configurations. This will also let you test Firefox 1.0.7 and the like.

Look at your stats. I took the opportunity to look at mine and see
that all flavors of IE 5.x account for less than 0.4% of my traffic.
All flavors of Netscape combined is about 0.6%. Firefox is about 5.5%
and Safari is about 2.8%. Thats just me, YMWV. So for me, 5.0
browsers are a pretty insignificant minority and so I am not too
worried about them. That being said, I do make sure that the site is
functional in all those... meaning I don't have anything that
prevents anyone in a 5.x browser from using the site, but I don't
worry that much about the details.

[css-d] IE 5.0 Windows problem

2005-11-09 Thread Michael Angeles
I'm using sliding doors method for the global navigation in a site
header and the links are not clickable in Windows IE 5.0. Does anyone
have ideas or suggestions as to why this would happen?

Thanks for any insight,

#header #nav1 #menu1 li {

I asked already about this and didn't get an answer - so I'm rephrasing
- what kinds of things might IE 5 PC do differently than every other

[css-d] IE 5.0 and 5.5 hacks

2005-05-25 Thread anthony croshaw
Hi guys, I have come up against my first ie5 nightmares, do any of you know
some good sites that explain the various hacks in plain English? I know a
few already, like the body {text-align:center;} one for 5.5, but really I
need to know more. From what I understand after reading some articles by
Eric, if you use divs with no borders, margins or padding, and apply the
styling to the contents, you should get round most of the problems?

Cheers for your help, and any good links!

That'll get you around the MS-box vs. the W3C-box problems - to a degree.

For some more insight:
http://www.quirksmode.org/css/contents.html
http://www.w3.org/International/articles/serving-xhtml/

My simplest hack is to keep IE6 in quirks mode, as it doesn't have a
real standard mode anyway. Then I give IE/win an MS-box and all other
browsers a W3C-box - before I start killing IE/win bugs in a
'conditional commented' stylesheet:
http://www.gunlaug.no/contents/wd_1_02_01.html#item2
(plain Norwenglish, with a lot of extra links and stuff)
