Two of the labs - both in the private sector - received the strain this spring, only a few months before letters tainted with anthrax spores were mailed to New York and Washington, the records show. Col. Arthur Friedlander, senior military research scientist at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick, Md., said the Ames strain was distributed by the military for research under strict controls to legitimate workers in the field. FBI spokesman Mike Kortan said yesterday that the agency's anthrax probe had moved way beyond the short list of labs that received the Ames strain from Fort Detrick. Transfer records obtained by the Post under the Freedom of Information Act show that the Army agency in Frederick, Md., shared the Ames strain last March with scientists at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, an Albuquerque research institute, and in May and June with the Battelle Memorial Institute, a Columbus, Ohio, corporation involved in anthrax vaccine research. No records were available before 1997, when a new federal law required researchers to report the transfer of dangerous pathogens to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But Army officials said the other labs to receive Ames were the Defence Research Establishment Suffield, a Canadian biodefense institute that received Ames in 1998; the U.S. Army Dugway Proving Ground, a test facility in the Utah desert that received the bacteria in 1992; and the Chemical Defence Establishment at Porton Down, a British biodefense institute near Salisbury, England, which received the Ames strain in the mid-1980s. This is not a cavalier thing that one does, Friedlander said. When anyone isolates strains, they are shared through the scientific community. That's how research gets done. It follows a long tradition of collaboration with people that we are well familiar with. The Ames strain, a virulent form of the bacteria, is named for the Iowa city where it was originally isolated. It was used in attacks that killed five people and infected 13 in Florida, New York, Connecticut and Washington, D.C., according to investigators. When the anthrax attacks began in early October, many experts believed that the Ames strain, because of its use in vaccine studies, had been distributed to thousands of researchers worldwide. But that number has been found to be much lower in recent weeks. Friedlander estimated yesterday that the numbers of labs in possession of virulent anthrax strains, including Ames, probably numbered no more than a dozen. In addition to the five labs that received Ames from the Army, others known to have the Ames strain are Martin E. Hugh-Jones, an anthrax researcher at Louisiana State University, and a lab at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Ariz. Jones recently said he received the Ames strain in the late 1990s from microbiologist Peter Turnbull, then at Porton Down. Turnbull, confirming the transaction in an interview last week, said Porton Down shared Ames with very few researchers, whom he declined to name. The records document the delivery of Ames bacteria to at least 10 establishments, but only five received Ames in a form that makes people sick. The first agency reported to have received the Ames strain from Fort Detrick was the Chemical Defence Establishment, which used the bacteria to test vaccines for troops. Porton Down scientists previously acknowledged sharing the bacteria with the agency's public health branch, the Center for Applied Microbiology and Research. The center's officials in turn have acknowledged distributing the bacteria to a small number of private researchers. Fort Detrick's documents record several exchanges of Ames bacteria between Fort Detrick and the Dugway Proving Ground, the Pentagon's primary chemical and biological defense testing center, in Utah's Great Salt Lake Desert. Dugway, the site of several biological weapons tests in the 1950s and 1960s, has continued to use live anthrax spores in experiments that test the

An Algerian man in custody in Vancouver who is wanted in the U.S. on
terrorism charges sent money and forged Canadian passports to Germany in
October 1999, according to Canadian immigration documents obtained Thursday.
The documents allege that Samir Ait Mohamed sent the four Canadian passports
to individuals who trained with convicted terrorist Ahmed Ressam at a
terrorist training camp in Afghanistan.
Ahmed Ressam solicited the help of Samir Ait Mohamed to obtain genuine
passports from an individual working inside the passport agency, states an
affidavit by Seattle FBI agent Fred Humphries included in hundreds of pages
of documents obtained by the Vancouver Sun.
The passports were to be used by a team of terrorists who intended to enter
the U.S, with those passports to conduct terrorist attacks within the U.S.,
the affidavit says.
And a terrorism specialist with the FBI testified at Mohamed's detention
review hearing last July 31 in Vancouver that Mohamed was involved in a plot
to plant a bomb on a gasoline truck and blow up a Jewish neighbourhood in
Montreal.
The revelations were among hundreds of pages of documents released Thursday
by Canada's Immigration and Refugee Board.

At this time California was actually as distant from the East Coast as Europe or Africa. Going there long meant a difficult trip around Cape Horn or later through the jungle of Panama or Nicaragua. The overland route by wagon trek was no shorter and even more dangerous, involving Indian attacks and possible freezing or starving to death in the Rocky Mountains. Thus, when the Pacific railroad was completed on May 10th 1869, the country had good reasons to celebrate. Now Online in Chapter 6 : The Transcontinental Railroad One of the outstanding construction works of the 19th century in America, the first transcontinental railroad was also an example of how great fortunes were founded on the basis of government support to private enterprises. China merchant and visionary Asa Whitney (1797-1877) had plans for a transcontinental railroad as early as 1844. But it took another 18 years until the Congress of the United States of America enacted the laws, which made construction of the first railroad, between the Mississippi and the Pacific Coast possible. In the Pacific railroad Acts of 1862 and 1864, the government granted rights of way and use of building materials along the way, a 20000000 acre land grant and government support for loans of 60000000 $ to three companies, which were to build the transcontinental railroad and its feeder lines, in the East from Kansas City and in the West from Sacramento. When on May 10th 1869, the Union Pacifics locomotive 119 met the Central Pacifics Jupiter at Promontory Utah, America had mastered the Frontier. In just seven years, actual construction works lasted even less, the Union Pacific railroad had built 1086 miles from Omaha Nebraska, whereas the Central Pacific had built 690 miles from Sacramento. Both railroads had crossed a major mountain range, to the East the Rocky Mountains and to the West the Sierra Nevada. On May 15th 1869, regular scheduled service between Chicago and Sacramento was inaugurated, opening the way for thousands of immigrants, regular travelers and sizeable freight volume. But the building of the transcontinental railroad also had its shadow face. The Union Pacific railroad was overburdened by $ 74 million of bonded debt it was unable to service from regular income for years. Its shares fell to 9 $ before Wall Street manipulator Jay Gould bought control and the scandal around the Credit Mobilier scheme (see below) rocket the political scene in Washington and precipitated the panic of 1873. There are no accurate figures on how many civilians have been killed, wounded or maimed in Afghanistan since the US unleashed its military might on October 7, but it undoubtedly runs into the hundreds, perhaps thousands. Millions more Afghans have been displaced, watched family members die or their homes destroyed. Outside of Afghanistan, the most visible sign of the human impact can be seen in this southwestern Pakistani city, close to the border where the war-wounded and others who have run for their lives are found. Doctors at the city's main hospital, the Sandeman Provincial, treat new cases every day and are now running out of a lack of supplies, particularly the metal plates used to repair limbs crushed by falling walls. They estimate they have seen at least 60 seriously injured people in the weeks since the US started bombing. Quetta's other hospitals have treated similar numbers, as has the basic medical facility at Chaman, on the border with Afghanistan. Psychiatrists have also had to cope with a massive rise in patient numbers. A large number have post traumatic stress disorder, Dr. Ghulam Rasool, consultant psychiatrist at the Bolam Medical College said. Rasool is one of just five psychiatrists in Quetta and is seeing at least 100 patients a day, more than 60 percent of whom are traumatised Afghans. And that, he says, is just the tip of the iceberg. They are depressed and anxious, they are irritable, have lost their appetite. There is a real feeling of loss -- loss of body, loss of money, loss of friends and family, he said. The psychological trauma is deep. Their basic needs have been ignored. They feel insecure, have no stability and are suffering the effects of war, deficiency of food. Rasool, who is working 15 hours a day, said one of the main problems was that refugees could not afford medicines. If they are not treated, it will become chronic stress disorder and even suicide, he said. Medicins Sans Frontiers (MSF) team leader Aitor Zabalgogeazkoa said it was too early to judge the long-term impact of the war on Afghan people. Of course the people who are running are very scared. They have seen the kind of horror that many will never see, he said. But in my experience only something like five percent of people suffering the effects of violence like this need long-term psychological assistance. He also pointed to the fact that many Afghans were used to hardship with the country wracked by war and drought for years. Many are realistic enough to face the situation and get on with it. They have a coping mechanism with family and friends. They more or less assimilate it and it is very difficult to judge how traumatised and affected they are. While many may appear resigned to their fate, despair and grief is clearly visible in the mushrooming communities of Afghans who have made it to safety. It is rare to find an intact family. Refugees, often in tears, recount how they have found sons shot dead by the Taliban and had sons and husbands forcibly conscripted to fight a war they do not want to fight. Scores more tell of homes destroyed by US bombs, children, husbands, wives, mothers and fathers killed during the five-week long campaign to eliminate Osama bin Laden and his al-Qaeda network. And some of those affected by the US-led bombing campaign will never fully recover, physically or psychologically. Sath Mohd, 11, will go through life without his right leg, which was blown off when a bomb landed close to a group of children playing near the southern city of Kandahar. Twelve days after he was admitted to hospital in shock and caked in dried blood and mud, he is struggling to come to terms with what has happened. Why me? What did I do to America? I was just playing. I don't know where my friends are, where my mother is, he said. His grieving father, holding his hand, asked: What future does he have? ---End Message---

The decisions in two lawsuits testing controversial copyright legislation on Wednesday upheld the ability of content owners to restrict access to their works and showed that U.S. courts are more than willing to limit what can be published online. Along with the government's push for more surveillance powers on the Internet, the judgments could herald the end to the "untouchable" status of free speech on the Internet, legal experts said. "Unfortunately, I am not one of the optimists on this front," said Allonn Levy, a partner with the HS Law Group and the lead attorney defending a group of Web sites against a California lawsuit brought by the DVD Copy Control Association. "There is a great deal of policy being created to differentiate between analog media and digital media, between the Internet and the real world." A few years make a difference. In 1997, the U.S. Supreme Court readily struck down the onerous Communications Decency Act, ruling that it would hinder free speech on the Internet. Yet four years later, the judiciary seems ready to limit the publishing of information across what the high court referred to as the "new medium of worldwide human communication." Most of the controversy revolves around the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 (DMCA), a law designed to protect copyright holders' ability to put digital fences around their content and placing restrictions on what can be published online and what people may access. The latest rulings support the DMCA, championing those who aim to own information, Levy said. "I think the direction that policy-makers are going is toward less free speech on the Internet." A double jab In the most-watched case, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York upheld restrictions on the online hacker magazine 2600, limiting its ability to post or link to the DeCSS program for cracking DVDs. The magazine and its publisher, Eric Corley, were ordered to remove all copies and links to copies of the program, but Corley's lawyers argued that his site--a news page for hackers and underground Net users--is protected by the First Amendment. The appeals court did not agree, however. In a 71-page ruling issued Wednesday, the three-judge panel affirmed a lower court's decision against Corley, saying that DeCSS code is only partially protected speech and that such speech can be restricted on the Internet. "The court spends 10 pages arguing that code is free speech," said Cindy Cohn, legal director for the Electronic Frontier Foundation. "Then, in the second half, they say, well, because the Internet is a more efficient way for people to get information and because it is more easy to use, we are going to give it less protection," added Cohn, who with dozens of lawyers submitted a brief arguing that the restrictions on Corley should be dropped. Charles Sims, a partner with Proskauer Rose who represents the Motion Picture Association of America in its case against Corley, dismissed fears of free-speech restrictions, calling them a "false bill of goods." "Copyright and free-speech law have coexisted now for 200 years," he said. "There is no free-speech problem with these statutes." Yet the appeals court's own statements disagree with Sims'. Specifically, the court acknowledges there is a trade-off between allowing unfettered speech and preventing the misuse of protected copyrighted content. "The fundamental choice between impairing some communication and tolerating decryption cannot be entirely avoided," stated the panel in its findings, adding, "it is not for us to resolve the issues of public policy implicated by the choice we have identified." That is Congress' role, the court maintained. And so far, lawmakers have decided to strengthen content owners' rights at the potential expense of free speech. Content threatened With a finger testing the legal winds, many companies have been quick to take advantage of their new powers by quashing vocal online critics with threats of legal action under the DMCA. When posters to the tech-issues Web board Slashdot published specifications for Microsoft's proprietary version of the security standard Kerberos, the software giant sent the site's owner a letter threatening a lawsuit under the DMCA. Slashdot resisted, and later Microsoft dropped its demands. And British medical research firm Huntingdon Life Sciences temporarily shut down the Web site of anti-animal-testing group Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty by delivering a cease-and-desist letter in late August to the group's Internet service provider, alleging violations of the

Amidst all the attention to United Airlines' post-September 11 woes, no one noticed the ringing irony of its tapping John W. Creighton Jr. as the new CEO to pull it out of a downward spiral. John Creighton is best known as the Weyerhaeuser president who turned the timber giant around in the early 1990s, but he's held another position closer to the events that sent one United jet crashing into the World Trade Center and another into the Pennsylvania countryside two months ago. Creighton has sat on the board of the California-based oil multinational Unocal since 1995--the period in which Unocal became the main American corporate suitor seeking to do business with the Taliban. When it comes to building in war zones and dealing with unsavory regimes, Unocal has long been renowned as what Burma democracy activist Larry Dohrs calls "the bottom feeder of the oil business." It completed a billion-dollar gas pipeline in Burma even after Texaco and Arco bowed to environmental and human rights protests. And in 1995, during the scramble for Central Asia's newly opened oil and gas bonanza, it conceived an audacious plan: a pipeline from Turkmenistan through Afghanistan and Pakistan to the Arabian Sea. It enlisted Saudi, Pakistani, Japanese, Korean and Indonesian partners. And it embarked on a fossil-fuel version of the Great Game against the Argentine firm Bridas, which also sought the pipeline franchise. In December 1997 Unocal hosted Taliban delegates in Texas and even took them to the beach. It also gave nearly $1 million to a job-training program in the Taliban stronghold of Kandahar, out of up to $20 million it spent on the pipeline effort. It hired former US ambassador to Pakistan Robert Oakley to press its case; hired special ambassador John J. Maresca to, in Unocal spokesman Barry Lane's words, "look at corporate responsibility globally"; and hired Henry Kissinger to cap the Turkmenistan side of the deal. "We didn't focus on the Taliban," Lane insists. "We also sponsored a training program in Northern Afghanistan," and hosted some of the warlords now in the Northern Alliance. But with the Taliban gaining, and controlling the pipeline's southern route, the focus was inevitable. "If the Taliban leads to stability and international recognition," Unocal executive vice president Chris Taggart declared after the Taliban took Kabul in 1996, "then it's positive." That merely mirrored the US government's complacent, fumbling Afghan dealings; Lane claims, and Ahmed Rashid confirms, in his book Taliban: Militant Islam, Oil and Fundamentalism in Central Asia, that Unocal even disadvantaged itself against Bridas by admonishing the Taliban on human rights. But the company hung in even after women's groups protested, after Secretary of State Madeleine Albright called Taliban practices "despicable" in 1997 and after Taliban guest Osama bin Laden declared a fatwa against the United States in 1998. After the summer 1998 embassy bombings and US missile reprisals, Unocal had to pull out of Afghanistan. In December 1998 it formally withdrew from the project. Jack Creighton became Unocal board chairman in 2001 but stepped down on August 31. Unocal spokespeople will say only that this resignation was prompted by his United Airlines appointment. His new office at United will say only that "Any inquiries regarding Unocal or its business practices--past, present or future--should properly be directed to the Unocal Corporation." Creighton remains on Unocal's board.

http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/returnofcointelpro.html THE RETURN OF COINTELPRO The New York Times reported on December 1 that Attorney General John Ashcroft is considering a plan to relax restrictions on the FBI's spying on religious and political organizations in the United States. Specific mention was made of the practices followed by J. Edgar Hoover in the 60s and how Congress placed restrictions on them. It is these restrictions that Ashcroft is planning to relax. What they are really talking about is the FBI's COINTELPRO operation. And it is important for activists and citizens in general to realize that COINTELPRO was not just about spying on the American people, but of "dirty tricks", covert operations that targeted anti-war groups, early feminists, Native American activists, and civil rights workers including Martin Luther King. The FBI's activities, which Ashcroft wants to bring back, included burglaries, forgery, planting false stories in the media, and frame-ups. Innocent Americans who had committed no crimes other than to disagree with the policies of the state were falsely accused and sent to jail, had their careers wrecked, and in some cases died. During this period of time, less than 5% of the files kept on citizens by the FBI were in any way connected to criminal investigations, so intense was the FBI's focus on quelling political dissent. In the 1970s, the COINTELPRO files were leaked to the press. Americans were outraged, as the very idea of a secret police force working to undermine free and open political debate was enraging to a generation not so far removed from the horrors of the Third Reich. Congress had to be seen to do something about what most Americans correctly saw as un-American and un-Constitutional behavior by the FBI. The mere existence of such a secret police threatened to delegitimize the entire government, and as a result, Congress was forced to hold hearings. During those hearings, Americans learned that the FBI, far from it's media-polished image as scientific crime fighters, was maintaining networks of informants across the land, in every college, in large companies, everywhere. These informants were reporting citizens who spoke out against the government to the FBI, much as their Nazi counterparts had done just 25 years previously. FBI college informants were infiltrating the anti-war movement for the express purpose of wrecking it by the commission of illegal activities which would justify the wholesale shut-down or public embarrassment of the movement. One particular FBI stunt, done on the orders of the Nixon White House, had on-campus FBI informants organize an anti-war protest at a popular Southern California amusement park, then once it was underway stage a riot to generate as much negative publicity towards the anti-war movement. In this way, the unwinnable Vietnam war was allowed to perpetuate itself far longer, and at greatest loss of life, than would have been the case had the Democratic process not been willfully and criminally subverted by the FBI. Yet another revelation that came out of the Congressional hearings into COINTELPRO was that much negative publicity about the civil rights movement was a complete fiction manufactured by the FBI itself. One of the most famous incidents revolved around the Black Panther Coloring Book, a book of racist and hateful images put out by the FBI but blamed on the Black Panthers by' the all-too-willing media. Yet another COINTELPRO operation was directed against actress Jean Seberg, an outspoken supporter of civil rights. The FBI, knowing that Seberg was expecting a child, put out the false story (with the help of the Los Angeles Times) that she was actually pregnant by one of the Black Panthers, a scandal which even though false, wrecked Seberg's career and drove her to suicide. Only because Seberg's husband was a French Diplomat and threatened to turn the FBI's actions into an international incident was the FBI forced to publicly apologize for what they had done. Ashcroft wants the FBI to be allowed to do such things again, burglaries, frames-ups, smears, career wrecking, and all in the name of "Homeland Security". The actions of the FBI, which in the 60s almost brought down the government, are now to be the standard operating procedures used against those who have committed no crimes, but merely refuse to agree with the policies of the supreme state. The most unlikely Israelis are becoming convinced that Yigal Amir did not murder Rabin, but that he was actually killed in his car after Amir shot two blank bullets. Such is the weight of evidence that Amir is expecting a million dollar advance on a book that will tell his side of the story. Amir's literary agent Avi Feinstein says, Amir was a government agent and he will expose the whole conspiracy in his book. That is, if he can recall it after his extensive experience with sophisticated mind control. The most convincing evidence that Amir did not kill Rabin came from police forensics expert Baruch Glatstein, who testified at Amir's trial. After examining Rabin's suit and shirt, he concluded that two shots from point blank range killed the prime minister. Amir was filmed shooting from at least five feet away. According to Glatstein's testimony, one shot came from a distance of 25 centimeters, while the second was a contact shot. Glatstein rationally explained that Rabin's shirt was torn to shreds in a way that could only occur if the gasses from the cartridge exploded on his skin. Further, Glatstein tested the shirt of Yoram Rubin, Rabin's bodyguard who was shot in the forearm. He found traces of copper and lead in the bullet hole while Amir's bullets were composed entirely of copper. In short, Amir didn't shoot Rubin either. Glatstein's testimony agrees with that of Dr. Skolnick, a surgeon who operated on Rabin. Dr. Skolnick concluded that his injuries were caused by contact shots. In July, the Supreme Court heard testimony from a Tel Aviv taxi driver who picked up a passenger on the day Amir was convicted. After hearing a radio report on the conviction, the passenger said he was a pathologist at Ichilov hospital who examined Rabin. He insisted that Amir could not have shot Rabin because his wounds were from point blank range. He then produced his Ichilov ID card, proving he was, in fact, a pathologist working at the hospital. Dozens of witnesses heard five shots fired, and in July, a police officer assigned to the fateful rally where Rabin died, Yossi Smadja, told the press that he also heard five shots. But their testimony was not welcomed at the Shamgar Commission's coverup of the event. The amateur film of the Rabin assassination has since been examined by numerous analysts in frame by frame sequence and found to have been sloppily cut and edited. More sinister is Rabin's reaction to being shot. Instead of lurching forward from the bullets, Rabin alertly turns back, seemingly aware of the events taking place. Most sinister of all, during the final seconds of the film while Rabin is supposedly being lain on the back seat of the car, followed by the wounded bodyguard, someone closes the opposite back passenger door of the car from inside. Clearly, that someone was awaiting Rabin from inside the car. Then there is the testimony of Shimon Peres who saw Rabin's body in the hospital. He claimed in Yediot Ahronot that Rabin's forehead was swollen and bruised, he thought from being pushed on the pavement after he was shot. This is in direct contradiction to the eyewitness report of Miriam Oren who was beside Rabin after Amir pulled the trigger. She told Israel Television news moments after the incident that Rabin walked into the car under his own power. Where, and how, did the bruises that Peres claims he saw occur? Finally, there is the indisputable proof offered unintentionally by Rabin's aide, Eitan Haber. While surgeons were operating on Rabin at Ichilov hospital, for reasons unexplained to this day, Haber rifled through his suit and shirt pockets looking for something and pulled out the songsheet Rabin had held at the rally. Haber produced it for the cameras as he announced Rabin's death and it was deeply bloodstained. Unless Rabin put it in a non-existent back pocket of his suit, he was shot from the front. Support for that contention came from a most unlikely source. On the night of the murder, a close Rabin compatriot, Member of Knesset Ephraim Gur, left Ichilov Hospital and told a Reuters reporter that he had seen Rabin, and that he was shot through the chest and abdomen. -Caveat Lector- http://www.mediamonitors.net/amr76.html CNN applauds killing of POWs by Northern Alliance by Ahmed Amr The Red Cross, Amnesty International and assorted news agencies are reporting that many Taliban POWs, with hands tied behind their backs, were executed by Northern Alliance troops in Mazar-e-Sherif. There are even reports that American special forces had protested the executions but were ignored. A CIA agent died in the assault on the prison. Initial reports had the Northern Alliance claiming that the riot was a pre-planned conspiracy started by suicidal Taliban POWs who had smuggled weapons into the prison. But that was an obvious fabrication, since the POWs had surrendered in Konduz and been searched before being sent to a fort outside Mazar-E-Sherif controlled by Abdul Rashid Dostum, an Afghan warlord with a long rap sheet of war crimes. Later the story was changed and the Taliban were accused of having rushed their guards and taken their guns. The BBC aired a report that the prison revolt was instigated by the mistreatment of the prisoners. This was a prison riot for the history books. Apparently none of the prisoners survived. That, in and of itself, is suspicious. American air strikes were called in to 'control' the riot. After the three-day blood bath, Dostum walked through the rubble and seemed quite pleased with himself. Two Taliban leaders who had negotiated the surrender at Konduz were with Dostum. Reporters noted that one of them was visibly shaking and refused to talk at the staged 'cover-up' news conference. The other Taliban leader flatly denied that there was a conspiracy by the POWs and made clear that they had surrendered in good faith. While the Red Cross and Amnesty International called for an investigation, CNN's Aaron Brown applauded the slaughter because the POWs 'had asked for it.' It now appears that every last Taliban POW was killed, many with bound hands and bullets through the head. Many bodies had been mutilated. It was a very grizzly scene, even for the ICRC which just last week was recovering the remains of hundreds of other Taliban soldiers who had been killed in suspicious circumstances at a school in Mazar-E-Sherif. Now, I am going to go out on a limb here and speculate that the slaughter of the POWs was pre-planned. Dostum got some unmistakable green lights from Rumsfeld, who has spent the last week openly disparaging the idea that prisoners should be taken alive. At a press conference in the Pentagon on Friday, Nov 30th, Rumsfeld claimed he had no idea of the particulars of the events at the POW camp. But, he brushed aside the need for an inquiry. Well, if Rumsfeld knows so little of what transpired in a three day prison riot that was quelled with the use of American air power, one would think that he would be anxious to clear up any doubts that POWs were executed with their hands tied behind their backs. In a week when CNN pundits were deliberating the Bush Administration's new policy to try terrorists in military tribunals, General Dostum was making certain that no one would need a day in court. So, why would the government of the United States go through the elaborate ruse of setting up military tribunals for the Taliban and their foreign allies? The real tribunals have already been established by Dostum and his followers. Dostum's brand of 'justice' was predictable and many experts in the region were aware that he is prone to this kind of behaviour. It should be noted that the Northern Alliance is a signatory to the Geneva Convention and that the Red Cross has demanded that the Geneva rules governing the treatment of POWs be enforced in Afghanistan. Many organizations, including Amnesty International, are demanding an investigation of the prison riot. The American and British governments are claiming that there is no need for an inquiry. Now, what possible harm could come of an inquiry? If no war crime took place at that camp, than it would serve the national interest to dispel all the lingering doubts about the many press reports of mass execution of POWs. Even if CNN approves of this kind of slaughter, it does not have the authority to give Dostum a free pass. An inquiry should also investigate the role of the major networks in covering up the details of this war crime. They have done it before for their favorite war criminal, Ariel Sharon. It appears that they are developing an unhealthy habit for this sort of thing. From now on. every time I see Aaron Brown on the tube , all I see is the face of a man who approves of putting a bullet in the head of a POW with hands tied behind his back. Those who applaud war crimes are virtual participants in war crimes. CNN fits the profile all too well. Their journalists should be disarmed in areas of conflict, lest they get a little carried away and start shooting POWs just to get a good clip for the nightly news. snap out of their walking comas. For better or worse,
the information revolution is here. The basis of our
economy is steadily shifting from the means of
industrial production to the knowledge that enables
industrial production. As a result, ordinary human
beings suddenly have access to sophisticated
information technology, allowing unprecedented access
to the marketplace of ideas. But will this same
technology be turned against us in the name of
national security? As the military and the
intelligence community begins exploring the frontiers
of information warfare, the answer to that question is
more ominous than ever. This ParaScope special report
will take a look at what is being planned, and who is
doing the planning.

National Security and the Information Revolution
As far as freedom of speech goes, the information
revolution is a dream come true. Steep barriers to
entry have been removed from the marketplace of ideas,
and the implications are staggering. For the first
time in history, ordinary human beings have access not
only to a massive, rapidly-expanding archive of human
knowledge, but also to a means of mass distribution.
And if you have the skills and don't mind bending the
official rules a little, an open door is an
invitation.
Energy, like information, wants to flow free; the only
barriers are those erected by human beings, for
whatever reasons or justifications. If you know the
system better than the people who erected those
barriers, whether it's an operating system or a tax
system or an alarm system, you can breeze through like
Casper the Friendly Ghost. For whatever reasons or
justifications.
Hence, for those entities which view the unrestricted
flow of information as a potential threat, it's a
full-on Freddy Krueger nightmare. The Pentagon has not
done a fantastic job of managing security on its
labyrinthine web of 2.1 million computers and 10,000
local-area networks. For one thing, the idea of all
those hundreds of thousands of unauthorized intrusions
into unclassified U.S. military systems scares the
hell out of them. But not nearly as much as the idea
that they have created a system they neither
understand nor control. The Pentagon is also uptight
about losing several infowar skirmishes against a
relatively low-tech opponent during the United
Nations' Somalia operation.
The proposed response thus far has been predictable
based on past experience: 1) spend a ton of money and
2) blow the crap out of somebody. Dozens of articles
and strategy papers on information warfare have been
written by military consultants, and a Defense
Department task force recently recommended allocating
$3 billion over the next five years to line the
information superhighway with barbed wire. It also
recommended legal revisions to allow the Defense
Department to retaliate with debilitating force
against suspected attackers. The third major proposal
would create an Information Warfare Center, which will
fuse together all the various intelligence
capabilities of the National Security State.
Whether or not these steps will actually deter, thwart
or hinder non-sanctioned computer activity is yet to
be seen. It'll probably separate the big dogs from the
runts, but as man is imperfect, no system is truly
secure. That won't stop them from moving forward with
the proposals, though, and their actions could have
major ramifications for your digital freedom and civil
rights in the very near future. So let's take a closer
look at what they're planning to do, and who's doing
the planning.
Ignorance is Strength
Information Warfare in the New World Order
On July 15, 1996, President Clinton issued Executive
Order #13010, which addressed threats of electronic,
radio-frequency, or computer-based attacks on the
information or communications components that control
critical infrastructures ('cyber threats'). Because
many of these critical infrastructures are owned and
operated by the private sector, it is essential that
the government and private sector work together to
develop a strategy for protecting them and assuring
their continued operation.
If your Big Brother alarm isn't going off yet, you
better make sure it's plugged in. During the reign of
dictator Benito Mussolini, corporate and government
power in Italy were merged into a hybrid form of
corporatism which came to be known as fascism. Under
the Third Reich, Hitler's Nazi Party (National
Socialist Worker's Party) placed Germany under a
similar system of government corporatism.

-Caveat Lector- http://mediafilter.org/caq/ U.S. Military and Corporate Recolonization of the Congo by Ellen Ray The United States' involvement in Congo since before independence from Belgium in June 1960 has been steady, sinister, and penetrating. Most notable was the CIA's role in the overthrow (September 1960) and later assassination (January 1961) of Congo's first Prime Minister, the charismatic (and socialist) Patrice Lumumba. The full extent of U.S. machinations was not known for years,1 but the failure at the time of the United Nations to protect Lumumba was patent. And questions continue to linger over the mysterious plane crash in September 1961 that killed U.N. Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold as he was flying to the border town of Ndola to meet with Moise Tshombe, president of the breakaway Katanga Province. The plane fell from the sky, killing all aboard.2 Is it any wonder that in Congo today there is little trust of Washington or respect for the United Nations? Introduction In October 1996, the Alliance of Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Congo-Zaire (ADFL), commanded by and composed mainly of Tutsi military forces from Paul Kagame's Rwanda Patriotic Army (RPA), along with Tutsi refugees from Zaire and some Congolese patriots,3 all under the titular leadership of Congolese exile Laurent Kabila, crossed into Zaire from Rwanda and Burundi. In May 1997, after only seven months of fighting, they had overthrown the 30-year dictatorship of Mobutu Sese Seko.4 While marching west across the vast expanse of the country, divisions of this army had wreaked terrible vengeance on the Rwandan Hutu exiles encamped since 1994 in eastern Zaire, where they had been driven from Rwanda by the RPA on the heels of the horrendous massacre of hundreds of thousands of Rwandan Tutsis, encouraged and supervised by extremists in the Hutu-dominated government. In Kinshasa, with Kabila named President, key cabinet posts and the new Congo army and security forces were immediately staffed at the highest levels by Rwandan Tutsis. By July 1998, Kabila realized that the Congolese people would not support the excesses of the Rwandan foreigners throughout their government. He also recognized the extent to which he had become a puppet of his Tutsi allies, and after confirmed reports of atrocities by Tutsi military against Hutu exiles in the east, and later in the west of the country, had become too prevalent to ignore, and after he had uncovered an apparent Rwandan plot to assassinate him and stage a coup in Congo, Kabila ordered the Rwandans to leave. Less than a week later, on August 2, 1998, Ugandan and Rwandan regular troops invaded Congo with regrouped, well-trained rebel forces, and began the war to overthrow Kabila that goes on to this day, despite a shaky, much-violated, U.S.-supported cease-fire. Rwandans and Ugandans control most of the east of the country, and there has been a de facto partition, a gross violation of Congolese sovereignty. Yet Rwanda is a tiny, impoverished nation, and Uganda is not much larger or richer, while Congo is one of the largest, richest, and most populous nations in Africa, which at one time had its most powerful army. How did this happen? Could impoverished Rwanda and Uganda have orchestrated, armed, and financed such operations on their own? Is it a coincidence that Rwandan strongman Paul Kagame was trained in the United States?5 That the Rwandan army received, and continues to receive, training in the U.S.? That the Pentagon has had Special Forces military training missions in Rwanda and Uganda for more than five years? That vast segments of the Congolese infrastructure, particularly the mining companies,6 have been taken over by U.S.- and western-linked multinationals, working with the Rwandan and Ugandan rebels and governments? The U.S. Role The Mobutu era began with ardent U.S. support, financial and military. From 1965 to 1991, Zaire received more than $1.5 billion in U.S. economic and military aid.7 In return, U.S. multinationals increased their share of the ownership of Zaire's fabulous mineral wealth.8 On the foreign policy front, Zaire was a bastion of anti-communism during the Cold War, in the center of a continent Washington saw as perilously close to Moscow's influence. As the State Department put it, Zaire has been a stabilizing force and a staunch supporter of U.S. and western policies9 Mobutu's corruption and brutality were ignored for thirty years. It was only when the plunder of western-owned assets and the ruination of the country were nearly complete, when Mobutu's stolen billions had become a world-wide embarrassment, that the U.S. began to seek an acceptable change. By this time, the U.S. was deeply involved in both Uganda and Rwanda, and very close to Paul Kagame. In 1990, Kagame, a Rwandan exile serving as a colonel in the Ugandan army,10 was training at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, when he

Speaking of Saturday Night Fever, the Bee Gees are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The biggest box-office attraction this spring was Star Wars, and The Eagles Greatest Hits, Volume One has now sold 24-million copies in the U.S. It should be obvious by now that America is in the middle of a huge love affair with the seventies, the wacky and wild by-product of the sixties rebellion. But all is not well from that era of long ago. One ugly element of the seventies has resurfaced in the news recently: cults led by psychotic would-be dictators, a la Jim Jones and The People's Temple -- witness the Aum Supreme cult of Japan and the 39 Heaven's Gate suicides. The korporate media incessantly warn of the dire threat of uncontrolled cults preying on society, recently armed with a nefarious new ally: the Internet. The undercurrent of these notions is that something must be done about cult activity, lest more victims be devoured by suicidal sects. But the mainstream media outlets which warn that we must do something about these cults are the same mainstream media which proved themselves to be unreliable sources of information on the events at Jonestown. An honest evaluation of the facts brings to light a story even more morbid than a mass suicide: the prospect that Jonestown was a CIA-linked mind control experiment which ultimately self-destructed, taking with it the first Congressman to be killed in the line of duty. Let's start with the biggest lie of the whole Jonestown affair: the suicide hoax. http://www.parascope.com/articles/0997/jonestown.htm The Suicide Hoax The notion of a mass suicide at Jonestown has been repeated so many times that it is accepted as fact, and the association is so strong that when most people hear Jonestown, the first thing which pops in their head is Kool-Aid. This association is false. The source of the Kool-Aid Suicide stories was the U.S. State Department, which presented the story immediately after the suicides were reported as though it was the only obvious truth. A U.S. Army spokesman pronounced with complete authority, No autopsies are needed. The cause of death is not an issue here. The bodies were then allowed to rot in the jungle. Despite the lack of need for autopsies, Dr. C. Leslie Mootoo, the top Guyanese pathologist, was at Jonestown hours after the deaths, and, refusing the assistance of U.S. pathologists, accompanied the teams that examined the bodies. His conclusions? Dr. Mootoo found fresh needle marks at the back of the left shoulder blades on 80 to 90 percent of the victims. Others had been shot or strangled. A surviving witness stated that those who resisted were forced by armed guards to comply. Dr. Mootoo's opinion, and that of the Guyanese grand jury investigating Jonestown, was that all but three (only two of which were suicides) were murdered by persons unknown. If one was to go over the deaths in Auschwitz, it is almost a certainty, considering the horrendous conditions those who were there were under, that 0.2 % of all deaths could be attributed to suicides. Yet if anyone was to argue that Auschwitz was a suicide camp housing a bunch of religious freaks and not the compounds of murder that they were, they would (rightfully) be condemned for intellectual dishonesty, and their motives would be questioned. Body Count Bad Math The suicide hoax is merely the beginning of the deception. The original death count was 408 (an odd number to use if the number was an estimate), with the added claim that 700 had fled into the jungle. The final total was changed to 913. To explain this rather minor difference in arithmetic, American authorities first explained that those backward ignorant Guyanese could not count. Perhaps because the first official explanation of the bad math was so insulting, it was then proposed that they missed a pile of bodies, as if a pile of dead bodies is something that is easily overlooked. Finally, the official explanation that settled the whole question was presented: Bodies were stacked on top of each other. Of the 150 photos taken of the massacre, not one shows any body lying under any others. Those who first worked on the bodies, to release the gasses of decay, had to puncture the dead, making it unlikely that they missed anyone. These facts aside, one must wonder how 408 bodies -- 82 belonging to children -- could cover 505 others. Talk about bad math. With minor exceptions, pictures show the dead were found in neat rows, face down. The pictures also show drag marks leading to the bodies, indicating that victims were murdered elsewhere and placed there by someone else. These facts have lead to a more likely conclusion: 408 was indeed the

Archaeology and Anthropology Evolution Africa ore than 70,000 years ago, people occupied a cave in a high cliff facing the Indian Ocean at the tip of South Africa. They hunted grysbok, springbok and other game. They ate fish from the waters below them. In body and brain size, these cave dwellers were definitely anatomically modern humans. Archaeologists are now finding persuasive evidence that these people were taking another important step toward modernity. They were turning animal bones into tools and finely worked weapon points, a skill more advanced in concept and application than the making of the usual stone tools. They were also engraving some artifacts with symbolic marks — manifestations of abstract and creative thought and, presumably, communication through articulate speech. The new discoveries at Blombos Cave, 200 miles east of Cape Town, are turning long-held beliefs upside down. Until now, modern human behavior was widely assumed to have been a very late and abrupt development that seemed to have originated in a kind of "creative explosion" in Europe. The most spectacular evidence for it showed up after modern Homo sapiens arrived there from Africa about 40,000 years ago. Although there had been suggestions of an African genesis of modern behavior, no proof had turned up, certainly nothing comparable to the fine tools and cave art of Upper Paleolithic Europe. "I used to accept the `creative explosion' concept for the origin of modern human behavior," said Dr. Rick Potts, director of the human origins program at the Smithsonian Institution. "Now I think the nails are going into the coffin of that hypothesis. We are seeing many elements of modernity that were developing much earlier, in Africa, and more gradually." One reason Europe's prehistoric surge of creativity held the attention of scholars for so long was that it had virtually no serious competition. Archaeologists had spent little time digging African sites of that period, while every year in Europe they seemed to find more cavern walls adorned with painted deer, horses and wild bulls. Enthralled, scholars perhaps could not bring themselves to look for earlier and more distant origins of modern behavior. But after more than a decade of controversy, the South African cave artifacts are now being generally accepted as the earliest evidence of such modern human behavior. If correct, these and other findings establish that Homo sapiens came out of Africa not only with fully modern anatomies, but also with at least 30,000 years of experience in modern behavior. Dr. Potts said the beginning of this gradual behavioral evolution might reach back more than 200,000 years. Archaeologists have described the new research and their interpretations in recent seminars and journal articles. A group led by Dr. Christopher S. Henshilwood of South Africa is publishing a comprehensive report in this month's issue of The Journal of Human Evolution. The report includes an analysis of 28 bone tools and other artifacts from Blombos Cave, as well as 8,000 pieces of the iron oxide mineral ocher that might have been used for body decorations. Taken together with other recent finds in Africa, Dr. Henshilwood's team reported, the Blombos evidence "for formal bone working, deliberate engraving on ochre, production of finely made bifacial points and sophisticated subsistence strategies is turning the tide in favor of models positing behavioral modernity in Africa at a time far earlier than previously accepted." Many other archaeologists specializing in human evolution said the new research seemed to dispel previous doubts about the antiquity of the artifacts, which have been excavated and argued about since some of the first pieces were collected in 1992. Skeptics had suspected that artifacts of more recent vintage had somehow intruded into the cave's lower and thus older sediments. The oldest such tools reliably dated in Africa had been only 25,000 years old. The lineage of the first human ancestors is estimated to have diverged between five million and seven million years ago in Africa from the line leading to apes. Anatomically modern humans, Homo sapiens sapiens, evolved in Africa about 150,000 to 100,000 years ago. I am praying for the whole community. One person's beliefs are fine, but not on town letterhead, said Steve Young, who was sipping a beer at the Mouse Trap. It doesn't seem appropriate. Mayor Risher, whose affable demeanor and solid roots in the community have kept her in office for the past decade, is unapologetic. If I had thought I was doing something wrong, I would have not done it, she said. It just felt like it was something I could do for the community, mostly for our young people. Risher said she got the idea after Pastor Richard Moore of Yankeetown Church of God announced plans to place the fence posts. Moore asked his congregation to skip one meal a day for a 40-day period that ends in mid December. As the elected leader of this community, she was stepping out as a Christian and trying to do something positive, Moore said. We've gone so far in the separation of church and state it's almost like Christians don't have rights anymore. The proclamation is not a reference to a single event, Risher explained, but an overall sense of concern. She speaks of drunken drivers, fathers who molest their daughters and people who steal from their neighbors. Town Clerk Sally McCranie, who signed the proclamation, offered another observation: Kids in town, she said, have taken to dressing in all black and painting their faces white, a style known as Goth. We are taking everything back that the devil ever stole from us, Risher wrote. We will never again be deceived by satanic and demonic forces. Despite being the talk of town, Risher said she has received only one complaint about the proclamation. A business owner called her to warn against possible legal action. That prospect does not seem to worry her. Town Attorney Norm Fugate declined to comment, saying questions must be asked at Town Commission meetings, so everyone can hear his response. As for being impeached, Risher said that's unlikely. It would require a super-majority vote of the commission, and she is confident she has the backing of most of the officials. But he IS wrong about the Arab/Israeli conflict. Simplistic blame casting wont solve a thing. BOTH sides have behaved abominably towards each other. The blame lies, not with one side or another. It lies with the leaders. I don't care who started it, they should stand down immediately. Unfortunately, it's not up to the ordinary people, the ones who actually suffer. It's up to the leaders, all of whom have to much to personally gain by prolonging the conflict. Dan is not the only one here who has failed to think this all the way through. And its not like he lacks the brain power to do it, either. Dan is a BRIGHT guy. But it is EXTREMELY difficult for anyone to look at this objectively. Jews see Jews being killed. Arabs see Arabs being killed. The rest of us see people whose main distinguishing characteristic is that they wear different head gear, presumably so they can tell each other apart in a hurry in a fight in the dark. The rest of us are getting mighty fed up with the antics of BOTH sides. It is only natural to stick up for one's own. A Jew who doesnt stick up for Israelis right to live in peace is a might strange character, indeed. That doesn't make it right and it doesn't make it smart to support all of Israels policies. This kind of thinking is the root of the problem. It is not about Arab versus Jews. It's about Arab pawns and Jewish pawns being cynically manipulated by ruthless and amoral opportunists in power. That many pawns are willing is irrelevant. A pawn is a pawn is a pawn. How many pawns must die before this madness ends? Dont blame the Jews if this drags on for years. Not all Jews support Israels policies. Not all Israelis support Israels policies. Not even all Zionists support Israels policies. The ENLIGHTENED Zionist realizes that for Jews to ever live in peace and safety in the land of Israel, they must be surrounded, not by enemies, but by friends, many layers deep. Code named Operation Northwoods, the plans reportedly included the possible assassination of Cuban emigres, sinking boats of Cuban refugees on the high seas, hijacking planes, blowing up a U.S. ship, and even orchestrating violent terrorism in U.S. cities. The plans were developed as ways to trick the American public and the international community into supporting a war to oust Cuba's then new leader, communist Fidel Castro. America's top military brass even contemplated causing U.S. military casualties, writing: We could blow up a U.S. ship in Guantanamo Bay and blame Cuba, and, casualty lists in U.S. newspapers would cause a helpful wave of national indignation. Details of the plans are described in Body of Secrets (Doubleday), a new book by investigative reporter James Bamford about the history of America's largest spy agency, the National Security Agency. However, the plans were not connected to the agency, he notes. The plans had the written approval of all of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and were presented to President Kennedy's defense secretary, Robert McNamara, in March 1962. But they apparently were rejected by the civilian leadership and have gone undisclosed for nearly 40 years. These were Joint Chiefs of Staff documents. The reason these were held secret for so long is the Joint Chiefs never wanted to give these up because they were so embarrassing, Bamford told ABCNEWS.com. The whole point of a democracy is to have leaders responding to the public will, and here this is the complete reverse, the military trying to trick the American people into a war that they want but that nobody else wants. GUNNING FOR WAR The documents show the Joint Chiefs of Staff drew up and approved plans for what may be the most corrupt plan ever created by the U.S. government, writes Bamford. The Joint Chiefs even proposed using the potential death of astronaut John Glenn during the first attempt to put an American into orbit as a false pretext for war with Cuba, the documents show. Should the rocket explode and kill Glenn, they wrote, the objective is to provide irrevocable proof that the fault lies with the Communists et all Cuba [sic]. The plans were motivated by an intense desire among senior military leaders to depose Castro, who seized power in 1959 to become the first communist leader in the Western Hemisphere only 90 miles from U.S. shores. The earlier CIA-backed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba by Cuban exiles had been a disastrous failure, in which the military was not allowed to provide firepower.The military leaders now wanted a shot at it. The whole thing was so bizarre, says Bamford, noting public and international support would be needed for an invasion, but apparently neither the American public, nor the Cuban public, wanted to see U.S. troops deployed to drive out Castro. Reflecting this, the U.S. plan called for establishing prolonged military not democratic control over the island nation after the invasion. That's what we're supposed to be freeing them from, Bamford says. The only way we would have succeeded is by doing exactly what the Russians were doing all over the world, by imposing a government by tyranny, basically what we were accusing Castro himself of doing. 'OVER THE EDGE' The Joint Chiefs at the time were headed by Eisenhower appointee Army Gen. Lyman L. Lemnitzer, who, with the signed plans in hand made a pitch to McNamara on March 13, 1962, recommending Operation Northwoods be run by the military. Whether the Joint Chiefs' plans were rejected by McNamara in the meeting is not clear. But three days later, President Kennedy told Lemnitzer directly there was virtually no possibility of ever using overt force to take Cuba, Bamford reports. -Caveat Lector- Afghan villagers say air strikes killed scores of civilians By CHRIS TOMLINSON, Associated Press JALALABAD, Afghanistan (December 1, 2001 8:28 p.m. EST) - Coalition air strikes in eastern Afghanistan struck three villages and killed scores of civilians, witnesses and anti-Taliban commanders said Saturday. The U.S. military said it had no evidence that any of its air strikes hit civilians. Witnesses and survivors at a nearby hospital said between 100 and 200 villagers were killed Saturday when warplanes dropped more than 25 bombs in four passes over the village of Kama Ado, 30 miles south of Jalalabad. Witnesses and provincial officials also reported bombing in the nearby village of Agom, saying at least five people had died there. And Hazrat Ali, the security chief for Nangarhar province where the bombing occurred, said at least 50 people were killed Friday night when bombs fell on Khan-e- Muirajuddin, another village 15 miles southwest of Jalalabad. Another provincial official, defense chief Mohammed Zeman, said local anti- Taliban authorities had complained to the Americans that they were bombing in the wrong place. Marine Corps Maj. Brad Lowell, a spokesman from U.S. Central Command headquarters in Tampa, Fla., said Saturday that the military has no evidence any of its air strikes in the area hit civilians. Lowell said officials reviewed gun camera and surveillance footage going back to Thursday and found nothing resembling what the Afghans described. All of our rounds are accounted for, and the images show the caves and tunnel systems and the rounds hitting those targets, Lowell said. Referring to an initial report of one village bombed, Lowell had earlier said: It just did not happen. Lalgul, a 33-year-old farmer who claimed he witnessed the attack on Kama Ado from a neighboring village and helped rescue four survivors, said all 30 mud brick and wooden homes in the mountain village were flattened. Other witnesses gave the same account. Like many Afghans, Lalgul uses one name. Lalgul said that on his way to the hospital, he passed through Agom, he was told five people died and more than 25 were injured. Others from the area gave higher estimates. Zeman and Ali said bombs did fall on Agom, but they could not confirm the death toll. Ali said the death toll in the Khan-e-Muirajuddin bombing could rise. Fifty people were confirmed dead, it's possible that 100 or 200 were killed, he said. We are very sad about the bombing of civilians, but it is the fault of our own people, because they are giving false reports that there are al-Qaida camps there. Ali refused to elaborate. Pentagon officials have said they are bombing in the mountains south of Jalalabad because they believe more than 600 non-Afghan Taliban fighters and members of Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida network are hiding in mountain caves. Kama Ado is located in the foothills of the White Mountains, where the hideouts are reportedly located. The area is nominally under the control of the anti-Taliban Eastern Shura, led by former guerrillas in the war against Soviet occupiers in the 1980s. Zeman said he fully supports U.S. air strikes in the mountains, but that U.S. planes were hitting the wrong places. Bobby Fischer speaks out to applaud Trade Centre attacks

BOBBY FISCHER, the reclusive American chess grandmaster, has broken
years of silence to support the terrorist attacks on the World Trade
Centre and the Pentagon.
The Telegraph has discovered that Mr Fischer gave an interview to an
obscure radio station in the Philippines hours after the events on
September 11.
Mr Fischer is already wanted for questioning by the FBI for breaking
UN sanctions by taking part in a chess match in Serbia against Boris
Spassky in 1992 - his first for 20 years.
In his interview on September 11 with Radio Bombo in Baguio City, Mr
Fischer said: This is all wonderful news. It is time to finish off
the US once and for all.
I was happy and could not believe what was happening. All the crimes
the US has committed in the world. This just shows, what goes around
comes around, even to the US.
I applaud the act. The US and Israel have been slaughtering the
Palestinians for years. Now it is coming back at the US.
Mr Fischer, 58, also attacked Israel and Jews who he claimed were responsible for
bringing the attack on the World Trade Centre. He gave the interview because he is a
friend of Pablo Mercado, the station manager. They
met through their mutual friend Eugene Torre, the Filipino chess grandmaster.
Last night Mr Mercado confirmed that he took the call from Mr Fischer and then
interviewed him live on air. He has met Mr Fischer on several previous occasions with
Mr Torre.
Mr Mercado said: Bobby rang me up while he was watching the events in New York live
on television. He felt so strongly about what he was watching, he wanted to say the
American government had it coming to them.
I was shocked but not surprised. I know his views about America because I have spoken
to him on a number of occasions and met him through our mutual friend Eugene Torre. It
is Bobby Fischer without a shadow of a doubt.
Mr Mercado said that Mr Fischer had put on weight since his last public appearance and
talked constantly of his old chess matches. He always carried chess books with him.
The Telegraph tracked down Mr Fischer to his hideaway in Japan on Friday but he put
the telephone down. Mr Fischer, who has been a grandmaster since the 1950s, became the
first - and so far only - American world champion
in 1972.
He disappeared for the best part of 20 years before surfacing in 1992 to play against
his old opponent Spassky for $5 million.
The match broke sanctions imposed by the United Nations and in a
controversial move he was indicted in the United States. President
George Bush, the father of the current president, gave his personal
approval for the legal action.
Mr Fischer, who usually lives in Hungary, is a well-known anti-Semite
who has spoken out against the international Jewish conspiracy.

State sells birth data to Web site, raising ID theft fears
SACRAMENTO -- The birth records of more than 24 million Californians
have been sold by the state and posted on the Internet, offering easy
access to critical information needed to create fake identities.
By logging onto a genealogy Web site, people can gain access to such
personal data as someone's place of birth and mother's maiden name,
which can then potentially be used to access bank records and other
sensitive material.
While the sale of the database was legal, a leading state senator and
expert on privacy said Wednesday that she was ``appalled'' by the
news and wanted to find ways to restrict access to such information.
``The time has come for us to recognize that identity theft has
become a big problem,'' said state Sen. Jackie Speier, D-San Mateo.
``The fact that this information is public should raise a red flag.''
The ongoing war on terrorism has sparked a renewed nationwide debate
over how to balance personal privacy and national security. Since the
Sept. 11 attacks, experts from Washington to San Jose have been
discussing everything from a national identity card to extensive
background checks for people who buy airline tickets.
Concerns about false IDs were heightened by news that several of the alleged Sept. 11
hijackers were able to get fake driver's licenses in Florida and Virginia. Several
states have already started to tighten rules for get
ting driver's licenses.
At a special hearing Wednesday on privacy, state leaders demonstrated how easy it is
to get the building blocks for identity theft. Using the free genealogy Web site with
the California birth information, a legislative ai
de typed in the name of California Attorney General Bill Lockyer and quickly came up
with his mother's maiden name, along with the date and county of his birth.
That could provide a thief with enough information to check Lockyer's bank accounts or
get a new birth certificate, Speier said. In most cases, however, a person would need
at least one other piece of information -- such
as a bank account number or Social Security number -- to access a financial account.
Under current law, California sells birth and death records. The site, Rootsweb.com,
claims to be the oldest and largest free genealogy Web site. The site lists 24.5
million California birth records and 9 million death re
cords from the state.
One other state, Texas, has provided similar information to the company.
Lea Brooks, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Health Services, said birth
records from 1909 to 1995 sell for about $900 and that just two people had bought the
information in the past year. She could not identify
the buyers.
California is one of just a few states that make birth certificates easily available,
one privacy expert said.
Making it more difficult to get that information seems both reasonable and necessary,
said Jamie Love, director of the Consumer Project on Technology, a Washington,
D.C.-based privacy protection group created by Ralph Nad
er.
``If identity theft wasn't a problem, this wouldn't be a problem,'' he said. ``But,
given the limited number of data points that banks and other institutions ask for
before they grant access to your information, it seems
like this creates a problem.''
Not everyone was as concerned about the database.
State Sen. Debra Bowen, a Redondo Beach Democrat and member of the
Senate Privacy Committee, said there was little evidence to suggest
that thieves are taking such information to create fake identities.
Bowen said that the Internet site contains only basic information and
that anyone can legally get any California birth certificate across
the state.
``Unless you can answer the question that crooks are going down to
get the birth certificate and using that fraudulently, what's the
problem?'' she asked.

Now a new epidemic is plunging its people into ruin. Anthony Browne reports from Chisinau Anthony Browne Sunday December 2, 2001 The Observer The orgy has lasted 10 days. Fourteen gaunt addicts, cramped together in a bare flat in the shattered ruins of a Soviet tower block, repeatedly inject themselves with the drug that they have distilled over candles from cough mixture, aspirin and vinegar. The hits are sharp, highly addictive and propel everyone into a sexual frenzy. The effects are so short-lived, everyone has to inject at 40-minute intervals - more than 30 times a day. Veins quickly get torn and they have to inject into every accessible blood vessel in the body - in the arms, legs, neck, genitals. A government film, shot secretly from a cupboard, shows that during the 10 days of the orgy the addicts get no sleep and eat little. They collapse for a week and the cycle starts again. With shared needles and no condoms, almost all ephedrone addicts are HIV-positive. But it doesn't matter to them. The drug is so harsh on the body that addicts invariably die within three years as their organs simply coll apse. The ephedrone epidemic started sweeping Moldova, Europe's most shattered nation, five years ago, offering the only escape for a people who have given up hope. Since their first free elections in December 1991, many have seen their standard of living slip back to that of the Middle Ages. In Moldova's second largest city, Balti, one in 10 are now injecting drug users, with many of the rest on softer drugs. Still under communist control, Balti used to make hi-tech weapons for the Soviet army but has now tur ned into a city of ghosts. Sitting huddled in her empty flat in a crumbling block filled with human faeces, Tatiana, 33, knows she has about a year left to live. She was introduced to ephedrone two years ago by her brother-in-law and has been injec ting it ever since. Her brother and sister are also addicts; all their seven severely underdeveloped children are addicted to glue. She gets no money from the state and has sold her fridge, cooker, television, carpet, lights and even the gla ss in the door to buy drugs. She has no gas, electricity or water and sits all day on a bench with just a few rotting cabbages on the floor, her only decoration a crucifix. At lunchtime, she stares blankly at a bowl of cold porridge, and decides to s ave it for dinner, when she will have to eat in the dark. 'The ephedrone means there is no pain, then you feel active and sexy. But it destroys the body in a very short period. Even your speech suffers,' she said. Her 14-year-old son, Igor, had been imprisoned that morning - she didn't know why - and her 15-year-old daughter, Ilyana, was in tears. She hadn't managed to get her fix of glue that afternoon. Ilyana has a sideline as a prostitute to make money for drugs and food. Prostitution has become so normal among young women, there is no longer any stigma - it is just part of growing up. 'Prostitution is now socially acceptable,' said Gabriella Ionaschcu, head of the United Nations' Aids programme (Unaids) in Moldova. 'People taking ephedrone don't have long to live, but they don't care - they are only interested in taking the drug and getting maximum pleasure.' Unaids has projects to discourage people from sharing needles and to encourage them to use condoms, but prostitution and drug use are so rampant that Moldova could end up with African levels of HIV within a decade. For many, lethal drugs are a way out of one of the worst social and economic collapses the world has seen. Since independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Moldova's economy has shrunk by almost 70 per cent, making it by far the poorest nation in Europe, with an average income of £180 a year. Only in the capital, Chisinau, are there any signs of prosperity, among the gangster capitalists who have flourished on smuggling, corruption and t he sale of state assets. In the village of Mereni, an hour's drive from Chisinau, most of the population have slid back into pre-industrial times. There are no longer any cars, only donkeys and carts trundling around. Jurig Prisagaru, 33, used to work as a truck driver when Moldova was part of the Soviet Union but lost his job, then broke his arm, and had to give up one by one the benefits of the twentieth century. He can no longer aff ord gas, electricity or to buy food from others. He lives in a scruffy mud-and-brick hut with his wife, Lyumila, and their four children. Their water is drawn from a well and heated by wood stolen from the forest and vegetables grown on the scrap of land around them. They haven't eaten meat, fish or sugar for six months. War hits brothel clients in the libido
NO DESIRE: Purveyors of the oldest profession say that the terrorist
attacks on New York have taken a bite out of their businesses and the
sex drives of their johns

Jessie, a Berlin prostitute, has never been to New York and hasn't a
clue where Afghanistan is.
But the bubbly hooker says her brothel has suffered since Sept. 11
and blames the US terror attacks, the war in Afghanistan and the
looming recession for shrinking demand.
The clients are staying away in droves, said Jessie, 33. Demand
fell 20 percent since the terrorism thing.
The hijacked airliner attacks on New York and Washington sent after-shocks through
virtually every walk of life, including the world's oldest profession.
An informal survey found sex business booming in some parts of the world -- such as
Nevada's legal brothels -- but prostitutes in other hot spots such as Amsterdam,
Germany and Thailand reported a slide in their local
sex trade.
Sex operators in the US say their customers may be turning to hometown hookers to seek
comfort from the mental anguish stemming from images of the September attacks.
People are scared. They want that connection, said Joe Richards, owner of the
Cherry Patch brothel in the Mojave desert 120km north of Las Vegas -- one of the
few isolated US regions where prostitution is permitted.
Any time a disaster happens, it improves the sex business, Richards said, adding
turnover rose 30 percent since September.
They're spending money they think they might not have a chance to spend in the
future.
But in countries where prostitution is traditionally legal or tolerated, anecdotal
reports indicate a downturn -- largely because Americans are not travelling abroad
as much any more. The fall is often linked to a dip i
n travel since Sept. 11, exacerbated by slowing econ-omies and recession fears.
In Amsterdam, where prostitution has been legal since 1815 and scantily clad women sit
in large windows for inspection, sex workers said they were feeling the pinch.
Business has been hurt because there are fewer Americans, said a spokeswoman for the
Dutch prostitutes' association, Rode Draad (Red Thread).
But sex is a major industry in Amsterdam and a stronger appetite from local consumers
has compensated.
People turn to comfort in dark times, she said.
In Thailand, the Americans are also sorely missed.
After the attacks on their cities, the Americans have been afraid to travel and they
have not shown up here, said Praphan Poomchawsuan, operator of a powerful
entertainment group in Bangkok's notorious Patpong red-light
district.
He said American tourists had once accounted for half of Patpong visitors but have
disappeared since Sept. 11.
In Berlin, a spokeswoman for Hydra, a lobby representing some 400,000 prostitutes in
Germany, said there were about 1.2 million sex transactions each day before the
attacks.
Times were better before, she said. But I think the recession is taking a toll as
well. Tough economic times usually hit the male libido. They worry about money.
A Berlin prostitute named Gina, who has more than 15 years experience, said she was
sure business would pick up again.
Men are always interested in sex, she said. The demand never dies out.
In other sex industry busi-nesses, there is no clear cut trend. Some establishments
report an increase in demand by local customers but note that overseas travellers have
become scarce.
In New York, where the destruction of the World Trade Center has
created an eerie war zone feel, emotions still run high.
Nadia, 24, a dancer at Flashdancers at Times Square since 1998, said
in the days after Sept. 11 the gentlemen's club was overflowing
with customers.
They thought there was going to be a war here, and they wanted to be
near someone, they wanted company, she said. But now it is very
slow ... people need to be with their families.

Let us begin with George Tenet, appointed during Netanyahu's reign, by CIA head John Deutsch to be his liaison between Israel and the PLO. We jump ahead to Barak's regime and a ridiculously underlooked item which appeared throughout the Israeli media. Barak's Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and the CIA's resident spy, George Tenet had come to a little agreement: Peres assented to the PLO sending 40 policemen for an advanced CIA marksmanship course in Virginia. Once in old Virginee, the best snipers, especially those with the loosest attitude towards murder, became a handpicked hit squad. Their assignments would be chosen by the CIA and a tiny, nearly independent cell of the Israeli General Security Services or Shabak. The cell would be limited to a handful of officers loyal to the very far left of the Israeli political spectrum. These officers had spent most of the decade organizing, often deadly, sting operations against the religious Right and were responsible for setting up Yigal Amir for the murder of Yitzhak Rabin, Dr. Baruch Goldstein for a massacre in Hebron, the Kahalani brothers Eitan and Yehodidya for a planned massacre they knew nothing about etc. etc. el al. These officers preferred to let PLO Security Chief Jibril Rajoub murderers carry out most of the killing. All they had to do was supply the locations of the victims to the Arabs and they would take care of the dirty business. One indication of the ties between the two secret services was leaked to a religious newspaper Kol Hashavuah by a high-ranking government official. He claimed that after Rabin's bodyguard Yoav Kuriel threatened to tell the truth of Rabin's assassination, Shabak chief Carmi Gillon ordered him permanently hushed up. He could not find an assassin under his command willing to murder a friend, so he had Rajoub's men pump seven bullets into his chest. All he did was supply the location. Let's take a moment's breather. So far, published material has been the primary source of data. That Peres would be treacherous enough to send PLO thugs to the US for CIA advanced sniper training was confirmed many times over by the Israeli media. Of course, they believed these snipers, and their brand new up to the minute state-of-the-art CIA equipment, would be used to further peace because they believed Peres when he explained that the snipers would be aiming only at Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists. As for the Kuriel report in Kol Hashavuah...I have met the newpaper publisher Asher Zuckerman on several occasions and found him to be most responsible. Further, his reports (largely from Haredi civil servants working within the system at day jobs) have been reliable. One example stands out; he twice published claims that Rabin's surgeon's were suffering from unexplained debilitating diseases. Both stories were later confirmed to me at lectures by colleagues of the doctors. I will accept Zuckerman's professionalism as verification of the story and now do the same with another journalist, Steve Rodan. In 1994, he was the security affairs reporter for the Jerusalem Post. He contends that it is their attitude which insured that land would remain the domain of the wealthy elite. He says that no trespassing signs are the new badges of achievement for the affluent. He says property-rights organizations find legal ways to deny public access and teach their members how to manipulate the Constitution. The object of the professor's article is to bemoan the diminishing access to beautiful places, beaches, riverbanks and other vistas. His solution is public ownership. Public ownership of land is not a solution – it is a major problem that brings far worse consequences for society than the inconvenience of diminishing access to beautiful places. Of course, there should be some public land, parks, nature reserves and the like. The people in each community who want open space within their community have always required their elected officials to use their local tax dollars to provide such places. The federal government, too, has provided millions of acres for national parks, such as Yellowstone, Yosemite, the Grand Canyon and countless other beautiful places. In fact, federal, state and local governments already own more than 40 percent of all land in America. More than a thousand conservancy organizations, such as The Nature Conservancy, also own vast stretches of beautiful places. How much more is needed to satisfy the professor and others clamoring for more government land acquisition? Nothing less than total control of the land will satisfy supporters of the U.N. policy, because, as the U.N. document says, Private land ownership is also a principal instrument of accumulation and concentration of wealth and therefore contributes to social injustice. Only when the United Nations controls the distribution of wealth and can insure that all people enjoy the benefits of the earth's resources equally, will these folks be satisfied. Should such a condition befall us, freedom – as envisioned in the U.S. Constitution – could no longer exist. Private property ownership, including the right to use the property, and to exclude others from it, is one of the fundamental principles of freedom that has made America rise to the height of prosperity, power and prominence we now enjoy. While we applaud America's prosperity as a celebration of human achievement, others see this same prosperity as greed, indifference to the world's poor, and theft and exploitation of the earth's resources that are rightfully the property of all people. The professor, and those who subscribe to the U.N. policy on land, disagree with the founders of the United States. They are teaching a generation of students that our founders were wrong; that their philosophy contributes to the problems that now confront society; that we should reject the very principles that make our country great, and adopt the same philosophy that failed in the Soviet Union, and virtually every other society based on collectivism. Private ownership of land, subject to the vagaries of the market, is the only way to forge long-term solutions to resource use, open space, traffic and all the other problems that confront a growing civilization. The marketplace – where willing buyers trade with willing sellers – is a hard arbiter. There is nothing fair about it, nor are there any guarantees. But it is efficient and effective, and it will ultimately reflect the desires, ability and energy of the people

What we do know is that Salem bin Laden, 42, and the oldest of Saudi Arabia's bin Laden brothers, was on one of his frequent visits to Texas when he and friends went out for a Sunday afternoon of fun - flying low-power ultralight aircraft at an air park north of San Antonio. What we don't know is why Salem bin Laden took off in the tiny aircraft and turned toward a nearby row of high-power electrical towers. He climbed, but not high enough to clear the upper power line. The Sprint ultralight got tangled and crashed into the ground 115 feet below. Of everybody who was there, nobody could figure out why he tried to fly over the power lines, said Gerry Auerbach, 77, of New Braunfels, a retired pilot for Saudi Arabian Airlines and for the bin Laden brothers, multimillionaire builders who long ago disowned Osama. It was kind of a weird deal, said Schertz police Lt. Stephen Starr, at the time the city's acting police chief. He just drifted up into the wires. It has been turned into an even weirder deal by conspiracy theorists - with the unlikely help of the Public Broadcasting Service. In the 2000 PBS Frontline special report, Hunting bin Laden, PBS reported that Salem bin Laden died in a 1988 Texas plane crash - not in a hobby-kit-type, one-man ultralight, but in a full-size British Aerospace BAC 1-11. The death revived some speculation that he might have been 'eliminated,' PBS reported, adding that an accident report was never divulged. That's news to Starr. He and officer Lori Flowers, now an officer in nearby Windcrest, wrote a report that remains public record. On May 29, 1988, they were called to the Kitty Hawk Field of Dreams Ultra-Lite Flying Field on the edge of Schertz, a San Antonio suburb. Bin Laden had already been taken by ambulance to an Army hospital in San Antonio, according to the police report. Officers found the crumpled remains of a crashed ultralight. No federal investigators came to the scene, Starr said. Federal investigators do not review ultralight or glider crashes. Salem bin Laden was not wearing a helmet and died of head injuries from the fall, the Bexar County medical examiner concluded. The wind was blowing about 30 mph, usually too strong to fly an ultralight. The Schertz officers interviewed several witnesses. Their report concludes simply: Freak accident. Now armed with the PBS misreport, some conspiracy writers think Osama bin Laden blames the United States for the death of his oldest brother, the family's leader throughout most of the 1970s and '80s after their father's death in 1967. I don't think so, Auerbach said. I flew Salem everywhere, and I never met Osama. I think I saw him once. That was in the 1970s. Osama bin Laden would have been a teen-ager. He walked through the room, Auerbach said. Salem said: 'Oh, that's my brother. He's probably going to pray.' Several of the bin Laden brothers - not Osama - owned a fleet of aircraft and visited Texas often in the 1980s, Auerbach said. He chartered a Texas company named Binladen Aviation to manage part of the family fleet. On that particular 1988 Sunday - over a drizzly and windy Memorial Day weekend - Salem bin Laden was visiting as a guest at the wedding of Auerbach's son, he said. Bin Laden had also planned to ask about having an older BAC 1-11 refurbished in San Antonio, Auerbach said. But he was simply out for fun with friends at the ultralight park that afternoon. He was outgoing, a little bit flamboyant - a nice guy, Auerbach said. He was expecting bin Laden to come by the house later that day. The report, aired by Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (ZDF television), is of the greatest relevance to events of the past three weeks, in which attacks on US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania have become the justification for US missile strikes against Afghanistan and Sudan, and a shift in American foreign policy to an even more unbridled use of military force internationally. With Washington declaring war against terrorism and arrogating to itself the right to use its military might unilaterally against any target anywhere in the world, the German TV report raises the most serious and disturbing questions. All the more so, since the US media and leading Republican politicians, within hours of the American embassy bombings, began citing Reagan's 1986 air attack on Libya as an exemplary response to terrorist attacks, and pressed Clinton to carry out similar military action. The air strike on Libya On April 15, 1986 US war planes bombed the Libyan cities of Tripoli and Benghazi. They destroyed the home of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and killed at least 30 civilians, including many children. Gaddafi himself, the main target of the air strike, was not hurt. Two hours later President Ronald Reagan justified the unprecedented attack on a sovereign country and its head of state in a national television address. The US, Reagan claimed, had direct, precise and irrefutable proof that Libya was responsible for a bomb blast in a West Berlin discotheque. The explosion 10 days earlier at the disco La Belle, a favorite nightspot for US soldiers, had killed three people and injured 200. Since November of 1997 five defendants have been on trial in a Berlin court for their alleged involvement in the La Belle attack. But in the course of more than half a year the case has proceeded very slowly. ZDF television, which carried out its own investigation into the case, explained why in the August 25 documentary produced by its political magazine Frontal. What the German documentary reveals The Frontal report arrives at the following conclusions: 1) The lead defendant presently on trial, Yasser Chraidi, is very possibly innocent, and is being used as a scapegoat by German and American intelligence services. 2) At least one of the defendants, Musbah Eter, has been working for the CIA over many years. 3) Some of the key suspects have not appeared in court, because they are being protected by Western intelligence services. 4) At least one of those, Mohammed Amairi, is an agent of Mossad, the Israeli secret service. The man charged with being the mastermind of the La Belle attack, 38-year-old Yasser Chraidi, was a driver at the Libyan embassy in East Berlin in 1986. He later moved to Lebanon, from whence he was extradited to Germany in May 1996. Frontal interviewed the two Lebanese responsible for the extradition of Chraidi: the former public prosecutor Mounif Oueidat and his deputy Mrad Azoury. Both confirm that the German authorities used deceit to have Chraidi extradited. According to Azoury, he received no evidence that Chraidi was actually involved in the attack; there were only hints. Oueidat states that the Germans showed tremendous interest in getting Chraidi. The Americans were behind this demand, he says. This was obvious. They spurred on the Germans to speed up the extradition. Eventually Chraidi, declared to be a top terrorist, was flown to Germany in a spectacular security operation. But a Berlin judge found the evidence presented by the prosecution so weak, he threatened to release Chraidi within three weeks unless more proof was presented. At this point another man was brought into the case, who, according to Frontal, was obviously supposed to be spared by the prosecution until then. On September 9, 1996, the very day the Berlin judge threatened to release Chraidi, Berlin public prosecutor Detlev Mehlis, Berlin police inspector Uwe Wilhelms and a Mr. Winterstein of the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND) met Musbah Eter in the Mediterranean island state of Malta. CIA involvement The meeting had been prepared by the BND, which maintains close connections to its American counterpart, the CIA. Musbah Eter was running an international business in Malta, which, according to Frontal, served as a cover for extensive intelligence operations on behalf of the CIA. Hameed Gul By ARNAUD de BORCHGRAVE (EXCLUSIVE) RAWALPINDI, Pakistan, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- The retired Pakistani general who is closest to the Taliban and Osama bin Laden contends the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington were the work of renegade U.S. Air Force elements working with the Israelis. Gen. Hameed Gul led Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence during the war against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. Gul serves as an adviser to Pakistan's extremist religious political parties, which oppose their government's decision to support the United States in any action against Afghanistan's Taliban regime. Gul contends bin Laden had nothing to do with the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, saying instead that they were the work of the Mossad, the Israeli intelligence service -- a version of events that has been endorsed by Islamic fundamentalist clerics and is widely accepted by Muslims throughout the Arab world. Here is the transcript of the exclusive interview Gul gave to Arnaud de Borchgrave, United Press International editor at large: -- De Borchgrave: So who did Black Sept. 11? Gul: Mossad and its accomplices. The U.S. spends $40 billion a year on its 11 intelligence agencies. That's $400 billion in 10 years. Yet the Bush Administration says it was taken by surprise. I don't believe it. Within 10 minutes of the second twin tower being hit in the World Trade Center ... CNN said Osama bin Laden had done it. That was a planned piece of disinformation by the real perpetrators. It created an instant mindset and put public opinion into a trance, which prevented even intelligent people from thinking for themselves. -- Q: So you're already convinced bin Laden didn't do it? A: I know bin Laden and his associates. I've been with them here, in Europe and the Middle East. They are graduates of the best universities and are highly intelligent with impressive degrees and speak impeccable English. These are people who have rediscovered fundamental Islamic values. Many come from the Gulf countries where ruling royal families have generated hatred by the way they flout divine law, wasting billions on gratifying their whims, jetting around in large private jets by themselves, and sailing the Mediterranean in big private boats for weeks on end. Osama's best recruits come from feudal areas that are U.S. protectorates and where millions of poor people are seeking human dignity. I have even visited a Christian convent school in Murree, 60 miles from here, where my 13-year-old daughter is studying. The young girls there have told me Osama is their hero. Osama's followers identify with Mujahideen freedom fighters wherever they are defending Islam and its values. -- Q: So what makes you think Osama wasn't behind Sept. 11? A: From a cave inside a mountain or a peasant's hovel? Let's be serious. Osama inspires countless millions by standing up for Islam against American and Israeli imperialism. He doesn't have the means for such a sophisticated operation. -- Q: Why Mossad? A: Mossad and its American associates are the obvious culprits. Who benefits from the crime? The attacks against the twin towers started at 8:45 a.m. and four flights are diverted from their assigned air space and no air traffic controller sounds the alarm. And no Air Force jets scramble until 10 a.m. That also smacks of a small scale Air Force rebellion, a coup against the Pentagon perhaps? Radars are jammed, transponders fail. No IFF -- friend or foe identification -- challenge. In Pakistan, if there is no response to IFF, jets are instantly scrambled and the aircraft is shot down with no further questions asked. This was clearly an inside job. Bush was afraid and rushed to the shelter of a nuclear bunker. He clearly feared a nuclear situation. Who could that have been? Will that also be hushed up in the investigation, like the Warren report after the Kennedy assassination? -- Q: At this point, someone might be asking what you've been smoking. What is Israel's interest in such a monstrous plot, which, of course, no one believes except Islamist extremists who concocted this piece of disinformation in the first place, presumably to detract from the real culprits? A: Jews never agreed to Bush 41 (George H.W. Bush, the 41st president) or 43 (his son George W. Bush, the 43rd president). They made sure Bush senior didn't get a second term. His land-for-peace pressure in Palestine didn't suit Israel. They were also against the young Bush because he was considered too close to oil interests and the Gulf countries. Baldwin II, who at this moment succeeded the throne of Jerusalem, presented them with a house near the site of the Temple of Solomon--hence the name of Knights Templar under which they were to become famous. In 1128 the Order was sanctioned by the Council of Troyes and by the Pope, and a rule was drawn up by St. Bernard under which the Knights Templar were bound by the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. For a time, at any rate, the Templars had been at war with the Assassins. When in 1152 the Assassins murdered Raymond, Comte de Tripoli, the Templars entered their territory and forced them to sign a treaty by which they were to pay a yearly tribute of 12,000 gold pieces in expiation of the crime. Some years later the Old Man of the Mountain sent an ambassador to Amaury, King of Jerusalem, to tell him privately that if the Templars would forgo the payment of this tribute he and his followers would embrace the Christian faith. Amaury accepted, offering at the same time to compensate the Templars, but some of the Knights assassinated the ambassador before he could return to his master. Both on this charge and on that of treachery towards the Christian armies, Dr. Bussell's impartial view of the question may be quoted: When in 1149 the Emperor Conrad III failed before Damascus, the Templars were believed to have a secret understanding with e garrison of that city ; . . . in 1154 they were said to have sold, for 60,000 gold pieces, a prince of Egypt who had wished to become a Christian ; he was taken home to suffer certain death at the hands his fanatical family. In 1166 Amaury, King of Jerusalem, hanged twelve members of the Order for betraying a fortress to Nureddin. And Dr. Bussell goes on to say that it cannot be disputed hat they had long and important dealings with the Assassin and were therefore suspected (not unfairly) of imbibing their precepts and following their principles.(3) By the end of the thirteenth century the Templars had become suspect, not only in the eyes of the clergy, but of the general public. Amongst the common people, one of their latest apologists admits, vague rumours circulated. They talked of the covetousness and want of scruple of the Knights, of their passion for aggrandizement and their rapacity. Their haughty insolence was proverbial. Drinking habits were attributed to them ; the saying was already in use ' to drink like a Templar.' The old German word Tempelhaus indicated house of ill-fame.(4) The same rumours had reached Clement V even before his accession to the papal throne in 1305,(5) and in this same year he summoned the Grand Master of the Order, Jacques du Molay, to
