[CTRL] 1961 Vatican Document Barring Fags from Ordination & Religious Vows
-Caveat Lector- Found: 1961 Vatican Document Barring Homosexuals from Ordination and Religious Vows by John Vennari Editor of Catholic Family News Catholics throughout North America have been searching for it. The United States Apostolic Delegate, Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, said that we werent allowed to see it. But now, the 1961 Vatican document barring homosexuals from ordination and religious vows is found. In fact, it can probably be found on the shelf of most Catholic theological libraries nationwide. The 1961 Document, Careful Selection and Training of Candidates for the States of Perfection and Sacred Orders was promulgated by the Vaticans Sacred Congregation for Religious on February 2, 1961. The same document is published in its entirety, in English, in the Canon Law Digest, Volume V (Bruce Publishing Co, 1963), pages 452 to 486. The Canon Law Digest is not a periodical but a series of books that present Officially Published Documents Affecting the Code of Canon Law. Volume V, the volume that includes the 1961 Instruction, contains documents from 1958 to 1962. Oddly enough, Volume V bears the Imprimatur of William E. Cousins, Archbishop of Milwaukee. Just last week, another Archbishop of Milwaukee, the notorious Rembert Weakland, resigned in disgrace after his homosexual liaison of 20 years ago was brought to light on ABC Television, coast-to-coast. Getting hold of the 1961 document proved to be difficult. Catholic News Services reported of it some time in March and reported that it is still in force. The document was obviously not well-known. In fact, two colleagues who have extensive expertise on the problem of homosexuality in the priesthood had never heard of it. Did it even exist? About two weeks ago, I spent an afternoon at a local theological library looking, page-by-page, through the 800+ pages of the 1961 Acta Apostolicae Sedis. The Instruction was nowhere to be found. Just days before our latest deadline, a writer from Catholic Family News was literally smuggled 3 pages of the original Latin document from a source that the writer was forbidden to divulge. Clearly, there are highly-placed Churchmen who do not want the contents of this document known. (The front page and key paragraph of the document are published in the June 2002 issue of Catholic Family News). The reluctance of Church leaders to make known the contents of this document was recently verified by an exchange between Roman Catholic Faithfuls James Bendell and the Apostolic Delegate of the United States, Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo. On May 8, Mr. Bendell wrote a polite letter to the Nuncio asking him for a copy of the document, rather than relying on the secular press for accuracy. Archbishop Montalvo responded on May 11: Kindly be advised that the document, which you request, was reserved for use of the bishops. Thus I regret that I am unable to help you in this matter. Unfortunately, this statement from the Nuncio is patently false. On page 486, the Canon Law Digest says the following about the 1961 document: Note: Although this Instruction was not published in the Acta Apostolicae Sedis or any other public form but was privately circulated, it is nevertheless referred to by the Sacred Congregation of Religious itself as a matter of public law. (Emphasis in the original). Then how was the document found? On May 28, I received an e-mail from James Bendell relating that he had heard that the document might be found in Volume V of Canon Law Digest. I went to the local Catholic theological library, checked the index cards and found it. The library call letters for the book are BQV 212.B68 v. 5. The key paragraph regarding homosexuals and the priesthood is on page 471. It occurs under Section D of the Instruction: The Required Chastity. Here we read: Advancement to religious vows and ordination should be barred to those who are afflicted with evil tendencies to homosexuality or pederasty, since for them the common life and the priestly ministry would constitute serious dangers. The Canon Law Digest from which we have quoted is not an obscure series of books. As mentioned, it was a popular collection and is probably still found in most Catholic university and seminary libraries. In the very near future, I am sure that Roman Catholic Faithful will post the entire document on its webpage1 . Turner, founder of the 24-hour Cable News Network, was quoted on Tuesday as saying the Israeli military was engaged in "terrorism" against the Palestinians that could be compared to Palestinian suicide bomber attacks on Israelis. A senior board member at the YES satellite television broadcaster and a source close to the head of Israel's three cable providers, now engaged in a merger ( news - web sites), said the companies would weigh taking the widely watched CNN off the air. "At least two of us (board members) have demanded that YES management take CNN off the air for at least 24 hours in protest over what Ted Turner said," the board member, who asked not to be named, told Reuters. He said he expected a response from the chief executive of YES within the next few days. Board members will also seek to have CNN permanently replaced by another all-news channel, he said. A source close to Ram Belinkov, who will be chief executive of a merged company of the three cable providers -- Matav Cable Systems Media, Tevel and Golden Channels -- said the firms were "dissatisfied with CNN's political coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian situation." "Turner's comments were the latest in a long line of biased coverage (against Israel)," the source said. "We are very dissatisfied with CNN's coverage. It's very problematic." The source said Belinkov would meet CNN representatives in London within a couple of days and that the cable companies might soon reach an agreement to broadcast the Fox News Channel, owned by conservative Australian media magnate Rupert Murdoch. Removing CNN from the air would need the approval of the Israeli Satellite and Cable Television Broadcasting Council. The council has already granted approval to YES to broadcast Fox News, though the satellite company has not yet done so. CNN "PUZZLED" TBS, the parent company of CNN, said the cable companies' comments were "disappointing and truly puzzling." Ron Ciccone, managing director of TBS Middle East, said TBS had assisted in the development of Israel's cable industry and its commitment in the region had been and remained absolute. "Recently the marketing and content executives representing Israel's three combined cable companies approached TBS for help with their current financial difficulties. They have received a high level of understanding and cooperation from us. "Effective commercial discussion between longstanding partners should be taking place at the negotiating table and not in the media," Ciccone said in a statement. Eli Fastman, senior producer at Fox in Jerusalem, said he was opposed to taking CNN off the air but added that Fox would be broadcast in Israel regardless of what happened to CNN. In an interview with London's Guardian newspaper, the outspoken Turner said the Israelis and Palestinians were "terrorizing each other." "The rich and the powerful, they don't need to resort to terrorism...The Palestinians are fighting with human suicide bombers -- that's all they have," said Turner, now vice chairman of AOL Time Warner Inc. "The Israelis...they've got one of the most powerful military machines in the world. The Palestinians have nothing. So who are the terrorists? I would make the case that both sides are involved in terrorism." His comments, published on the morning of a suicide bus bombing in Jerusalem that killed 19 people, caused an uproar in Israel as it combats a 20-month-old Palestinian uprising against occupation in the West Bank and Gaza Strip ( news - web sites). At least 1,403 Palestinians and 539 Israelis have been killed since the Palestinian revolt erupted in September 2000 after peace talks envisaging a Palestinian state stalled. YES has about 300,000 subscribers in Israel, compared with about 1.1 million for the cable companies combined. This is a consistent and stable result, as all opinion polls show again and again. . . . Remember that by far not all settlers are ideologically motivated. Some moved to the occupied territories for promises of better life: fresh air, beautiful view, rural serenity. Many others, probably most of the settlers, were transferred to the occupied territories by the dull coercion of economy: while flats within Israel are extremely expensive, houses in the settlements are generously subsidized. Having to choose between an unaffordable small flat in Jerusalem and an almost-free spacious house in a nearby settlement, with a generous state mortgage, a generous state bonus, a generous reduction on income-tax as well as generously improved public services (education, health, infrastructure), many lower middle-class families opted for the latter. One can hardly blame them for that. In view of the Intifada, non-ideological settlers probably a majority in most settlements, especially in the bigger ones now find themselves both cheated and doubly betrayed. Cheated, because they were promised high quality of life and now find themselves literally in a war zone, risking their lives, injured and killed almost daily. They are constantly targeted by Palestinian militants, who ever more often try to penetrate the settlements and kill them even in their own homes. Whether we like it or not, these are facts that even Sharon's murderous "Operation Defensive Shield" failed to change. Moreover: if, as is now planned, a fence is to cut off the occupied territories from Israel, the settlers will become even more of a target for Palestinian militants, who may not be able to enter Israel itself. Betrayed once, because the state that urged them to move to the occupied territories does not even consider letting them leave . . . Betrayed twice, because public opinion turned against the settlers as if they and not the government that sent them and holds them hostage were the ultimate source of evil. The rhinocerised nationalistic daily Ha'aretz attacks settlers on a daily basis, urging them to leave "for their own sake", as if people who somehow managed to buy a cheap housing unit in a settlement could simply leave it behind and buy another house somewhere else. . . . Shortly after the first Oslo Accord (1993), the 13 families of the tiny settlement Dugit in the Gaza Strip nature-loving fishermen locked their houses, started a sit-in demonstration in front of the Prime Minister's Office in Jerusalem and demanded an alternative strip of coast inside Israel. It's time for peace, they said, we don't want to be a bone in Gaza's throat. PM Rabin rejected their demand. Dugit is still there, largely expanded meanwhile on confiscated Palestinian land, defended by battalions of soldiers, with Palestinian militants attacking it on a daily basis. Later on, Knesset Member Haggai Merom (Labor) prepared lists of West Bank settlers wishing to leave for fair compensation 30 to 50% in some settlements, he said. Then-president Weizmann rejected their request to meet him; PM Peres rejected their demand too. A couple of years later I happened to meet Shimon Peres. I asked him why. "It won't have mattered," he told me. "Even if a settlement of 5,000 had been left with only 500 settlers, we would still have to build the by-pass road leading to it". Not convincing? Very convincing. Peres could not even think of settlers in terms of human beings with rights and wishes. For Peres (or Barak, or Sharon), the settlements are there as an excuse for the by-pass roads, and the by-pass roads are there to divide and canonize the Palestinian territory, destroy Palestinian contiguity and prevent the option of a viable Palestinian state. The settlers are merely pawns in this game, just like the soldiers sent to protect them by turning Palestinian life into hell. Jews in America and world-wide should therefore use their money to support settlers who wish to leave the occupied territories and return to Israel. This should not even be a "political" issue: the settlers (and their children) are held hostage by the Israeli government, exposed to deadly violence. You do not have to be a dove to support people's right not to live in the middle of a battle-field (unless they want to). Sums and conditions can be negotiated, using as guidelines the compensations paid by Israel to the settlers evacuated from Sinai when it was returned to Egypt. The advantages of such an initiative are numerous. * On a human level, it respects the free and legitimate will of settlers who wish to leave. * On a moral level, it does justice to innocent Israeli citizens who conformed to Israeli law and policy, moved to the occupied territories, and now feel abandon

ON May 16th The New York Post dropped what appeared to be a bombshell: "Bush Knew . . . " Hoping to score politically, the Democrats jumped on the bandwagon, pressuring the White House to come clean on two "top-secret documents" made available to President Bush prior to September 11, concerning "advance knowledge" of Al Qaeda attacks. Meanwhile, the U.S. media had already coined a new set of buzzwords: "Yes, there were warnings" and "clues" of possible terrorist attacks, but "there was no way President Bush could have known" what was going to happen. The Democrats agreed to "keep the cat inside the bag" by saying: "Osama is at war with the U.S." and the FBI and the CIA knew something was cooking but "failed to connect the dots." In the words of House Minority Leader, Richard Gephardt: "This is not blame-placing. . . . We support the President on the war against terrorism â have and will. But we've got to do better in preventing terrorist attacks." 1 The media's spotlight on âforeknowledge' and so-called "FBI lapses" served to distract public attention from the broader issue of political deception. Not a word was mentioned concerning the role of the CIA, which throughout the entire post-Cold War era, has aided and abetted Osama bin Laden's Al Qaeda, as part of its covert operations. Of course they knew! The foreknowledge issue is a red herring. The "Islamic Brigades" are a creation of the CIA. In standard CIA jargon, Al Qaeda is categorized as an "intelligence asset". Support to terrorist organizations is an integral part of U.S. foreign policy. Al Qaeda continues to this date (2002) to participate in CIA covert operations in different parts of the World.2 These "CIA-Osama links" do not belong to a bygone era, as suggested by the mainstream media. The U.S. Congress has documented in detail, the links of Al Qaeda to agencies of the U.S. government during the civil war in Bosnia-Herzegovina, as well as in Kosovo.3 More recently in Macedonia, barely a few months before September 11, U.S. military advisers were mingling with Mujahideen mercenaries financed by Al Qaeda. Both groups were fighting under the auspices of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), within the same terrorist paramilitary formation.4 The CIA keeps track of its "intelligence assets". Amply documented, Osama bin Laden's whereabouts were always known.5 Al Qaeda is infiltrated by the CIA.6 In other words, there were no "intelligence failures"! In the nature of a well-led intelligence operation, the "intelligence asset" operates (wittingly or unwittingly) with some degree of autonomy, in relation to its U.S. government sponsors, but ultimately it acts consistently, in the interests of Uncle Sam. While individual FBI agents are often unaware of the CIA's role, the relationship between the CIA and Al Qaeda is known at the top levels of the FBI. Members of the Bush Administration and the U.S. Congress are fully cognizant of these links. The foreknowledge issue focussing on "FBI lapses" is an obvious smokescreen. While the whistleblowers serve to underscore the weaknesses of the FBI, the role of successive U.S. administrations (since the presidency of Jimmy Carter) in support of the "Islamic Militant Base", is simply not mentioned. Fear and Disinformation Campaign The Bush Administration â through the personal initiative of Vice President Dick Cheney â chose not only to foreclose the possibility of a public inquiry, but also to trigger a fear and disinformation campaign: "I think that the prospects of a future attack on the U.S. are almost a certainty. . . . It could happen tomorrow, it could happen next week, it could happen next year, but they will keep trying. And we have to be prepared." 7 What Cheney is really telling us is that our "intelligence asset", which we created, is going to strike again. Now, if this "CIA creature" was planning new terrorist attacks, you would expect that the CIA would be first to know about it. In all likelihood, the CIA also controls the so-called âwarnings' emanating from CIA sources on "future terrorist attacks" on American soil. Pentagon/Justice Take PoliceState Moves, As LaRouche Warned

Attorney General John Ashcroft's suspension of the constitutional rights of an American citizen, in the "radioactive dirty bomb" case, is the latest step-wise escalation in the assault on civil rights and liberties which began in earnest immediately after Sept. 11.
On June 10, exactly as Democratic Party Presidential pre-candidate Lyndon LaRouche had warned in May, the Pentagon did "cross the Rubicon"âor at least the Potomacâto hold a press conference with Justice Department officials, where they announced the arrest and transfer to a military prison of José Padilla, an American citizen.
This unprecedented and legally dubious action occurred only weeks after LaRouche's EIR article of May 24, 2002, entitled, "The Northern Command: Crossing The Rubicon."
LaRouche said: "The proposal for the probably unlawful, U.S. Army Northern Command ('USNORTHCOM'), when taken in its current strategic-policy setting, is clearly a proposal to 'cross the Rubicon,' a preparation to create a Caesarian military dictatorship over both the North American continent and the Caribbean In today's world, it is a preparation for the Pentagon to cross the Potomac one morning, to place the U.S. Attorney-General and his minions in power, reducing the President himself to a ceremonial, or even lesser figure in the configuration."
The night before the June 10 press conference, Ashcroft's Justice Department got President George W. Bush to sign an order classifying Padilla as an "enemy combatant," because of his alleged ties to al-Qaeda.
This then allowed the former member of a Latino street gang, to be transferred to a military brig where he may never be tried, from Justice Department custody. One of the main reasons that Padilla was transferred, was that there is no evidence to prove the charges against him.
A high-level intelligence source in Washington told EIR that, while the U.S. government had "intelligence" about Padilla, they had no real evidence.
But as alarming as the legal maneuverings are, equally dangerous, and indefensible, were the actions by Ashcroft and his war-mongering allies, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz and FBI Director Robert Mueller, resorting to a Nazi Party-style "Big Lie" tactic.
To cause maximum panic, the announcement about the military transfer of Padilla, was made in Moscow by Ashcroft, mouthing off that the arrest of this "top" al-Qaeda terrorist justified U.S. concerns about the "axis of evil," state-sponsored terrorism, and the threat from weapons of mass destruction.
Ashcroft announced that Padilla had entered the United States to carry out an al-Qaeda plan to set off a "radioactive bomb" in Washington.
But just hours after Ashcroft's "Big Lie" announcement, the officials themselves had to backtrack on this outrageous propaganda. Not only was it later stated by Wolfowitz and FBI officials that there was "no actual plot" to which the U.S. government can tie Padilla; it was further admitted that he is not a "top" figure in al-Qaeda, or any other known terrorist group.
In fact, intelligence analysts admitted that al-Qaeda leaders would not make a recent American convert to Islam, such as Padilla, anything more than a courier or low-level operative.
- Ripping Up the Constitution -
The Justice Department's actions in the case of Padilla, who reportedly goes by the name Abdullah al-Muhajir after converting to Islam in the United States around 1993, goes well beyond what was contemplated in the President's Oct. 13 Military Order establishing military tribunals to try terrorist suspects captured in Afghanistan.
The Military Order explicitly excluded United States citizens, and also provided a procedure for trials and access to a lawyer.
Padilla's case stands in contrast to that of John Walker Lindh, the so-called "American Taliban," who had been captured in Afghanistan, as part of the military forces of Taliban and/or al-Qaeda.
Lindh is standing trial under Department of Justice charges in a Federal criminal court in Alexandria, Virginia.
Padilla's sudden transfer was apparently triggered by a scheduled court hearing at which the Justice Department would have been compelled to state whether or not it was bringing criminal charges against him.
Since, by all accounts, the government has virtually no evidence against Padillaâor at least, no evidence that it is willing and able to use in Federal courtâthe Justice Department went to President Bush on the evening of June 9, and got him to sign an order declaring Padilla an "enemy combatant" who was to be tranferred to military custody.

"The Community Character Act" is a homeowner's association on steroids. It sustains nothing and takes from every American their birthright of freedom. What is Sustainable Development? Imagine an America in which a single, specific ruling principle is created to decide proper societal conduct for every citizen. That principle would be used to consider everything you eat, what you wear, the kind of home in which you live, the way you get to work, the way you dispose of waste, the number of children you may have, even your education and employment decisions. On June 29, 1993, former President Bill Clinton issued Executive Order #12852 to create the President's Council on Sustainable Development. Sustainable Development calls for changing the very infrastructure of the nation away from private ownership and control of property to nothing short of a national zoning system. Locally elected officials will no longer be the single driving force in making decisions for their communities. Rules will be made behind the scenes in non-elected "sustainability councils" armed with truckloads of federal regulations, guidelines and money. According to Sustainable Development policies, air conditioning, convenience foods, single-family housing and cars are among the products that have already been determined to be unsustainable. Under such a system, the federal government, backed by an army of private, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), like the Sierra Club, Planned Parenthood, and the National Education Association will influence, if not dictate, policy in state governments and in local communities. Sustainable Development is nothing but pure Socialism in a Green cloak. Too many Conservatives throughout the nation are either falling for the deception or ignoring it. This is the current crisis of the Conservative movement. Until now, the congress has not passed specific legislation to impose Sustainable Development. Legislation is supposed to be openly debated and fully aired before voted upon and implemented as the law of the land. Those who are driving these policies understand that if the general public fully understood sustainable development there would be very little chance of implementation. The Community Character Act (S.975), and its counterpart in the House of Representatives (H.R.1433), is the legislation that will legalize enforcement of Sustainable Development in every community in the nation. The bill requires local governments to implement land-management plans using guidelines outlined in a federal document called the "Smart Growth Legislative Guidebook." This publication was developed with $2 million provided by the Clinton Administration to "guide" counties, cities and towns on how to "update their local zoning." The Community Character Act offers grants to communities that will pay up to 90% of the costs for localities to "update" their zoning, but only if they do it the way the federal government dictates. The Community Character Act requires localities to "conserve historic, scenic, natural and cultural resources." These are euphemisms that mean more land grabs and fewer places where people can freely go about their daily lives. It means planned economies, restricted housing, and diminished use of cars. It means government control of property. The bill contains not a single mention of private-property rights protection. The Community Character Act demands that communities "integrate local land-use plans with Federal land-use plans." That means local wants and needs, local problems, and local culture will be ignored---wiped away---as the entire nation is homogenized into one, unhappy colorless, controlled Big Brotherhood. Having conditioned Americans to believe that property values are more important than property rights, the effort is now being made to deprive Americans of those rights. Once that is achieved, the objectives of Communism will have been instituted in America. A good Journalist has a duty to get involved and make a difference in this important societal debate. By following certain guidelines, the concerned Journalist can be assured of having the maximum impact on this shameful problem. The first principle to remember is that subtle use of terminology can covertly influence the reader. Adjectives should be chosen for maximum anti-gun effect. When describing a gun, attach terms like "automatic," "semi-automatic," "large caliber," "deadly," "high powered," or "powerful". Almost any gun can be described by one or more of these terms. More than two guns should be called an "arsenal". Try to include the term "assault weapon" if at all possible. This can be combined with any of the terms above for best results. Nobody actually knows what an assault weapon is, so you cannot be criticized for this usage. Your local anti-gun organization can provide you with a list of the latest buzz words like "junk guns," "Saturday Night Specials," and "the criminal's weapon of choice". Don't worry about getting technical details right. Many a reporter has accidentally written about semi-automatic revolvers or committed other minor errors. Since most people know little about guns, this is not a problem. Only the gun nuts will complain and they don't count. The emotional content of your article is much more important than the factual details, since people are more easily influenced through their emotions than through logic. Broadcast Journalists should have a file tape showing a machine gun firing on full automatic. Run this video while describing "automatic" weapons used in a crime or confiscated by police. At the least, a large graphic of a handgun should be displayed behind the on-air personality when reading any crime story. Do not waste words describing criminals who use guns to commit crimes. Instead of calling them burglar, rapist, murderer, or repeat offender, simply use the term "gunman". This helps the public associate all forms of crime and violence with the possession of guns. Whenever drug dealers are arrested, guns are usually confiscated by the police. Mention the type and number of guns more prominently than the type and quantity of drugs. Include the number of rounds of ammunition seized, since the number will seem large to those who know little about guns. Obviously, the drug dealers who had the guns should now be called "gunmen". Political discussions on gun control legislation usually involve pro-gun organizations. Always refer to these organizations as "the gun lobby". If space permits, mention how much money the gun lobby has spent to influence political campaigns and describe their legislative lobbying efforts as "arm twisting" or "threats". Gun owners must never be seen in a positive light. Do not mention that these misguided individuals may actually be well educated, or have respectable jobs and healthy families. They should be called "gun nuts" if possible or simply gun owners at best. Mention details about their clothing, especially if they are wearing hunting clothes or hats. Mention the simplistic slogans on their bumper stickers to show that their intelligence level is low. Many gun owners drive pickup trucks, hunt and live in rural areas. Use these details to help portray them as ignorant rednecks. Don't use the word "hunt". Always say that they "kill" animals. Don't be afraid to interview these people, they are harmless even though we don't portray them that way. Try to solicit comments that can be taken out of context to show them in the worst possible light. Never question the effectiveness of gun control laws or proposals. Guns are evil and kill people. Removing guns from society can only be good. Nobody really uses guns for legitimate self-defense, especially women or children. Any stories about armed self-defense must be minimized or suppressed. Be careful about criticizing the police for responding slowly to 911 calls for help. It is best if the public feels like the police can be relied upon to protect them at all times. If people are buying guns to protect their families, you are not doing your job. Emphasize stories where people kill family members and/or themselves with guns. It is important to make the public feel like they could lose control and start killing at any moment if they have a gun in the house. Any story where a child misuses a gun is front page material. View every shooting as an event to be exploited. Always include emotional quotes from the victim's family if possible. If they are not available, the perpetrator's family will do nicely. The quote must blame the tragedy on the availability of guns. Photos or video of grieving family members are worth a thousand facts. Most people will accept the assertion that guns cause crime. Webster Tarpley has documented it for us superbly in his Unauthorized Biography of George Bush, Sr., and likewise, Steve Pizzo in his September/October, 1992 article in Mother Jones Magazine, entitled "Bush Family Values." As journalist, Wayne Madsen, summarized in a recent Online Journalarticle, "The Bush family has managed to involve the United States in two wars; two invasions in Latin America, one that resulted in the fiery deaths of thousands of poor Panamanian barrio residents and another that resulted in the Bay of Pigs fiasco; aiding and abetting through murky financial investments America's Teutonic enemy in the last world war; corrupting the US Presidential election process; and making the wealthiest Americans and US corporations richer while at the same time cutting federal health, education and welfare budgets and offloading those tasks to the overburdened states." And now, as so many who have been so familiar with the devastations of the Bush clan for so long have been alerting us, the ultimate Bush deception, foreknowledge of the September 11 attacks, is out of the closet. What is not yet out of the closet, is that foreknowledge is not synonymous with "intelligence failure" but is yet one more horror in the Bush family's trail of death, destruction, and deviant demeanor. Pentagon lists top 100 defense contractors for 2001

WASHINGTON -- Lockheed Martin Corp. was the top U.S. defense contractor again
last year as the company earned $14.7 billion in domestic military contracts in
federal fiscal year 2001 -- down from $15.1 billion in 2000 -- Pentagon officials
announced.
Pentagon leaders made the announcement as they detailed last year's top 100
defense contractors. The Boeing Co., which earned $13.3 billion in military
contracts -- up from $12 billion in 2000 -- ranked second, and Newport News
Shipbuilding ranked third with $5.9 billion in military contracts in 2001 -- up sharply
from $800 million the year before.
Here are the top 10 U.S. defense contractors of 2001 and their earnings from
military contracts:

The participants called upon Arab research and study centres to conduct studies to reveal the true picture of how Arab Jews are treated in Israel and how they were treated under Arab Islamic rule prior to their migration to the Zionist state. The participants also referred to the peaceful co-existence of Muslims and Jews in Arab Muslim countries, where Jews are treated equally and enjoy their fundamental rights and freedom, which they cannot under Israeli regimes. They also reiterated the fact that what is being diffused by the international Zionist propaganda to sow deep-rooted hatred in the hearts of Arabs and Muslims towards the Jews will never serve the cherished goal of peaceful co-existence. They further discussed the situation of the Arab Jews currently living in Israel, and their attitudes towards the Arab-Israeli conflict, in comparison with their situation in the Arab countries throughout the history of the Arab Islamic civilisation, which rendered an exemplary model of tolerance, understanding, peaceful living, religious and sectarian freedom, in addition to preservation of the rights to privacy. The symposium also shed light on the Zionist propaganda machinery that those Arab Jews are now safe and secure in Israel after they had got rid of the harm and damage inflicted upon them by the Arabs and Muslims. "Such visions and allegations are the result of a broad brainwashing process committed by Zionism to deceive and mislead the so-called Diaspora Jews, who were living in the Arab countries, and persuade them to migrate to Israel," they said in their joint statement. The symposium called for the need to rephrase the Arab media rhetoric addressed to Israel and the West, and demanded further coordinated efforts to diffuse tolerance among all nations regardless of their origins and beliefs, and through the sublime Islamic teachings. The participants also called upon Arab research centres to conduct studies and research focusing on the fact that the Jews have never enjoyed freedom and good treatment such as that provided under the Arab Islamic rule. "The conference also calls for the forming of a task force from among researchers, verifiers and translators to translate into Arabic the 'Talmud', which is considered the major source of the Judaist jurisprudence, so as to disclose the real basis of the Jewish attitudes towards people of other religions," urged the statement. They also advised scholars and researchers to trace and follow up materials on the Internet and from other published sources about the relations between Jews and Muslims and, using the new communication technologies, create a better image for the Arabs and Muslims who are seeking a just and comprehensive regional peace in accordance with the international legitimacy. The symposium was addressed by Arab and Muslim scholars from around the world. Among the renowned participants was Dr Jamal Al Refaie', Professor of Hebrew and Director of Semitic Languages' Department at Ain Shams University of Egypt. Responding to a question on whether the Islamic rhetoric was the major cause of isolating the Jews and creating a feeling of antagonism against them, Dr Al Refaie' said that the Quranic rhetoric was addressed to the Rabbis and Talmud scriptwriters and not to the Jewish laymen. He added that history bears witness to the tolerance of Muslims towards the Jews. Asked if Arab rulers were behind the migration of the Jews, he said that the migration of Arab Jews took place at a time when Arab countries were under occupation. Regarding the nature of hatred harboured by Jews towards the Arab world, he said that Zionism has created some history for the Jews, convincing them that they have always been persecuted and oppressed which, in turn, generated the feeling of hatred in Jews for all other nations. As for the role of the Arab Jews in promoting foreign occupation, he pointed out that the Jews used to translate the Arab heritage into Hebrew deleting any reference to the Holy Quran and the traditions and life of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). While I respect Mr. Farah and appreciate his allowing me to voice my opinions here each week, I must respectfully disagree with some of his reasoning. The borders He begins by telling us why the federal government must make our borders "sacrosanct." But his arguments against open borders are based on an understandable but critical error that is widespread. He tells us why the government should keep the borders closed. But he doesn't tell us how the government will do that. Governments have been trying for millennia to keep people in or out of their jurisdictions with very little success. Libertarians understand a very simple fact of life: Government doesn't work. It can't deliver the mail on time, it doesn't keep our cities safe, it doesn't educate our children properly. But people love to play a gigantic game of "let's pretend": Let's pretend the War on Poverty really does help poor people. Let's pretend the War on Drugs really does reduce drug abuse and crime. Let's pretend the right government program can keep the wrong people out of the country. Too many people who recognize the terrible threat that government poses to their liberties and to the economic health of the country still act as though government can achieve whatever it sets out to do just so long as it's trying to achieve something they want. Rather than pretend government can keep undesirables out, libertarians work to reduce the welfare state so that only those who are looking for freedom and opportunity will want to get in. Libertarians know that a free country has nothing to fear from anyone coming in or going out while a welfare state is scared to death of poor people coming in and rich people getting out. Those awful drugs In the same way, Mr. Farah agrees that the federal government has made a mess of the Drug War but he upholds the right of state and local governments to outlaw drugs in their jurisdictions. In that, he's constitutionally correct, and most libertarians would agree with him. But here again, libertarians recognize that wherever you try to enforce victimless- crime laws, you will see an increase in violent crime, an increase in civil-liberties intrusions, and an increase in law- enforcement corruption. Libertarians instead support non-government programs to help addicts shake the drug habit, while recognizing that drugs were far less dangerous when they were completely legal in the U.S. Offense and defense As I did in this publication three weeks ago, Mr. Farah points out that this country has an overwhelming national offense but practically no defense. I think most libertarians agree with us that what we need is not a bigger offense budget, but less offense and more real defense. But libertarians have also been pointing out for years that the inevitable consequence of America's fearful national offense would be retaliation by foreigners who are fed up with America's bullying. Would that more people had recognized this before Sept. 11. Morality Mr. Farah says, "Libertarians make a fundamental mistake about the nature of man. Man is not inherently good." Precisely: Man is not inherently good. Thomas Jefferson recognized that when he said, "Sometimes it is said that man cannot be trusted with the government of himself. Can he, then, be trusted with the government of others? Or have we found angels in the forms of kings to govern him?" Because men are not angels, we have a Constitution to limit government strictly to just those functions that most people can't comprehend being handled outside of government. But libertarians aren't the ones making a fundamental mistake. Government is force, pure and simple. There's no way to sugar-coat that. And because government is force, it will attract the worst elements of society people who want to use government to avoid having to earn their living and to avoid having to persuade others to accept their ideas voluntarily. And so libertarians don't want to leave the governing of our morals to society's basest members. When Mr. Farah says that too few libertarians understand that "a laissez faire society can only be built in a culture of morality, righteousness and compassion," I think he has it backward. It is a society in which politicians possess power that could work only if morality, righteousness, and compassion were universal. Republican officials declined to disclose the donors to the event at the Mayflower Hotel, which is expected to net as much as $30 million for the party. But people familiar with the dinner said drug companies, as well as financial service firms, are among the biggest contributors. Both industries are lobbying aggressively to fend off new, costly regulations in the waning days of this congressional session. Drug companies, in particular, have made a rich investment in tonight's event. Robert Ingram, GlaxoSmithKline PLC's chief operating officer, is the chief corporate fundraiser for the gala; his company gave at least $250,000. Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, a trade group funded by the drug companies, kicked in $250,000, too. PhRMA, as it is best known inside the Beltway, is also helping underwrite a television ad campaign touting the GOP's prescription drug plan. Pfizer Inc. contributed at least $100,000 to the event, enough to earn the company the status of a "vice chairman" for the dinner. Eli Lilly and Co., Bayer AG and Merck & Co. each paid up to $50,000 to "sponsor" a table. Republican officials said other drug companies donated money as part of the fundraising extravaganza. Every company giving money to the event has business before Congress. But the juxtaposition of the prescription drug debate on Capitol Hill and drug companies helping underwrite a major fundraiser highlights the tight relationship lawmakers have with groups seeking to influence the work before them. A senior House GOP leadership aide said yesterday that Republicans are working hard behind the scenes on behalf of PhRMA to make sure that the party's prescription drug plan for the elderly suits drug companies. Republicans favor a private-sector solution to lowering drug costs, one that requires seniors to buy insurance for drugs from companies or through a managed-care plan; Democrats want the drug benefit to be part of Medicare, a change companies fear could drive down profits. The House Energy and Commerce Committee will debate the Republican plan today but break early so GOP lawmakers can attend the dinner. GlaxoSmithKline spokeswoman Nancy Pekarek said the fact that Congress was considering the GOP drug plan the same day as the annual fundraiser was "coincidental," though she said her company backed the principles behind the House proposal. Both parties hold glitzy fundraising events here to wine and dine their most generous donors. The recent controversy over the lifetime academy award to Elia Kazan brought back into political use the name of once-blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo. For anti-Kazan partisans, Trumbos name was cited to rebuke Kazan for his informer role during the blacklist period. "Trumbo was the brave one," actor Nick Nolte stated, "for refusing to comply with the House Un-American Activities Committee." "Trumbo should be given the lifetime achievement award, not Kazan," wrote one editor of a Colorado newspaper. The Nation magazine, never one to let the blacklist era go unremembered, reprinted Trumbos condemnation of Kazan as "one deserving of utter contempt." What is striking about this episode is not so much the power the blacklist period still has to divide pundits, but that the majority of those who attack the period were too young to have personally experienced it. This use of Trumbo as a standard by which to measure those of anti-Communists is a relatively young phenomenon, one that shows the peculiar historical attitudes of baby boomers. Once blacklisted and denounced as a Stalinist, Trumbo, within the last thirty years, has undergone a cultural rehabilitation that at times has verged on celebration. The political winds shifting from right to left, from the anti-communist 50s to the countercultural 60s, recast the Trumbo image in a more favorable light. The New Left had always needed heroes (Fidel Castro, Mao Tse Tung, Ho Chi Minh) and martyrs (Huey Newton, Angela Davis); Trumbo provided both. He was both a figure who stood up to HUAC and a figure denied work for over a decade for his political beliefs. But more than this was involved in the Trumbo image. New Left pundits transformed him from Stalinist "hack" (Murray Kemptons phrase) to a figure worthy to stand beside Clarence Darrow in his advocation of freedom for all. He was now, in a biographical blurb for the 1972 edition of Johnny Got His Gun, " a fighter against censorship." Literary critic Robert Kirsch called him "a principled actor against repression and thought control." A Colorado newspaper editor called him the true symbol of freedom in the 1950s. A Hollywood Organization, The Fund for the First Amendment, recently gave testament to Trumbos heroic image at a film retrospective recalling the blacklist period. When Trumbo came on screen (during his 1947 testimony before Congress) the audience cheered; when a HUAC congressmen next appeared the audience booed. The purpose of this paper is to examine the validity of the New Lefts portrayal of Trumbo as a civil libertarian. Fortunately, we do not have to rely on Trumbos film scripts as a means to measure against the image (scripts are a dubious source at best since a film usually is the result of collaborative contributions and hence its political statements cannot be traced to one single person). Instead we have a number of pamphlets Trumbo wrote throughout his life on a variety of political topics. This journey through the land of Trumbo pamphlets reveals that the Trumbo image did not originate with the New Left, but began with Trumbo himself. As a pamphleteer, Trumbo used concepts of Anglo-Saxon justice, fifth amendments, rights of free speech, and the tradition of parliamentary democracy to defend communist causes. His guise in these writings was that of a civil libertarian defending democracy against the encroachments of the state. Hence, designations by writers such as Studs Terkel for Trumbo as a "defender of freedom" were merely echoes of Trumbos self-definition begun decades before the New Left. The free-thinking communist Most of these rehabilitators have had to contend with Trumbos 1943-1948 membership in the American Communist Party. Most have done so by portraying Trumbo as a free-thinker, whose membership in an organization known for its demands of orthodoxy and loyalty from its members did not compromise his individuality. Robert Kirsch, admitting Trumbos membership in the Communist Party, qualified this admission by stating that its "dogma and discipline went against his nature." But an examination of Trumbos stances even before his membership shows a disciple adhering to Moscows various ideological shifts at every step. In 1940, during the period of the Hitler-Stalin Pact, he was in sync with the Party Line, arguing against American involvement in the European conflict. That same year he supported the Soviet Invasion of Finland, even parroting Stalins justifications for it when he argued that Finland was fascist and therefore a threat to Russia. During the Grand Alliance period, with Russia attacked by Germany, Trumbo became violently pro-war; now attacking those he once supported, such as America First, as pro-fascist.
