Should Christians Celebrate "Christmas"?

The Shocking Pagan Origin Of Christmas! What is the TRUE ORIGIN of Christmas? Where
did it come from? Did you know Jesus Christ was born nowhere NEAR December 25, but
that was the "birth day" of the sun-god, "Sol Invictus" or "Mithras"? Did you know
December 25 was the concluding day of the pagan winter festival called the
"Saturnalia"? Where did "Santa Claus" come from? The "Christmas tree"? How did this
pagan feast become connected with "Christianity"? Here is an amazing "whale of a
tale"!

by William F. Dankenbring

Although the whole world celebrates Christmas as a "Christian" holiday, including
millions of non-Christians, is Christmas really "Christian" at all? Consider this
fact: Look high and low throughout the pages of the Bible, and you will find not ONE
WORD of "Christmas" being celebrated by any of God's people! It is not even mentioned
once! Neither Christ nor any of His apostles ever observed this holiday, nor the New
Testament Church!

Yet on the other hand the pagan, heathen world observed this day for thousands of
years before Christ was even born!

Where did the mysterious rites and ceremonies that surround this day come from? What
about the "Christmas tree" and the "Yule log" and the mistletoe and Holly wreaths?
Are ANY of these customs truly "Christian" in origin? And what about fat and jolly
old "Saint Nick" -- or Santa Claus?

It's high time we addressed these questions, and took a new look at "Christmas." A
church I was formerly a member of, which condemned Christmas observance as paganism,
for almost sixty years, today has turned its back on its former beliefs, and
encourages its members to observe this pagan mid-winter festival "in honor of Christ"!
Many are doing so, heedless of the severe warnings in Scripture of what their eternal
fate and destiny will be if they continue to embrace this ancient custom.

Is it wrong to celebrate "Christmas"? What is the truth about this popular and
widespread holiday?

The Origin of Christmas

Before one gets carried away with Christmas worship, there are a few things you should
know. Let's take an honest and objective look at the origins of this holiday.

We read in Werner Keller's book The Bible as History the following admission:

"December 25 is referred to in documents as Christmas Day in A.D. 324 for the first
time. Under the Roman emperor Justinian [A.D. 527-565] it was recognized as an
official holiday. An old Roman festival played a a major part in the choice of this
particular day. December 25 in ancient Rome was the 'Dies Natali Invictus,' 'the
birthday of the unconquered,' the day of the winter solstice and at the same time, in
Rome, the last day of the Saturnalia, which had long since degenerated into a week of
unbridled carnival . . ." (p.331).

Doesn't it seem rather strange that the so-called "Christian church" should choose a
day to celebrate Christ's birth which was identified as the day of the birth of the
unconquered sun, the day of the winter solstice, the "shortest day of the year," when
the sunlit part of the days start becoming longer again? What does this have to do
with Christ, anyway? Was Jesus Christ born anywhere near December 25? Keller goes on:

"Meteorologists as well as historians and astronomers have something of importance to
contribute to this question of fixing the date of the birth of Jesus. According to St.
Luke: 'And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping
watch over their flock by night' (Luke 2:8). "Meteorologists have made exact
recordings of the temperature at Hebron. This spot in the southern highlands of Judah
exhibits the same climatic conditions as Bethlehem, which is not far distant. The
temperature readings show over a period of three months that the incidence of frost is
as follows: December -- 2.8 degrees; January -- 1.6 degrees; February ---0.1 degrees.
The first two months have also the greatest rainfall in the year: approximately 6
inches in December, and nearly 8 inches in January. According to all existing
information the climate of Palestine has not changed appreciably in the last 2,000
years, consequently modern meteorological observations can be taken a
 s a b
asis.

"At Christmas-time Bethlehem is in the grip of frost, and in the Promised Land no
cattle would have been in the fields in that temperature. This fact is born out by a
remark in the Talmud to the effect that in that neighborhood the flocks were put out
to grass in March and brought in again at the beginning of November. They remained
out in the open for almost eight months. "Around Christmas-time nowadays both animals
and shepherds are under cover in Palestine.

"What St. Luke tells us points therefore to the birth of

[CTRL] USA - RICHARD PERLE

2002-12-19 Thread RoadsEnd
-Caveat Lector-

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cia-drugs/message/45225

Intelligence, N. 413, 16 December 2002, p. 7

USA - RICHARD PERLE

In a recent interview with the London-based newspaper, "The Guardian",
Richard Perle, the Pentagon's chief adviser on Iraq, and one of the
architects of US policy towards the Arab/Islamic world in general, accused
Europe -- with the exception of the UK -- of losing its "moral compass" and
"providing succor" to Saddam Hussein.

Referred to by Washington "insiders" as the "Prince of Darkness", Mr. Perle
appeared on CNN last September to call for an "all-out war against the Arab
world with a coalition entirely composed of Western Europeans". He accused
France of diplomatic manoeuvres, "but not moral fiber", for leading what he
termed the "resistance" within the UN Security Council to attempts by the
Bush administration to secure an "automatic mandate" for war against Iraq. He
described Germany, and the recently re-elected "red/green coalition" under
Chancellor Gerhard Schroder, of "subsiding into moral-numbing pacifism" and
the decision not to support military action against the Baghdad regime as
"unilateralism." He claimed that Europe, in general, has chosen to "ignore
the realities" of the Iraqi leader's excesses, accused "left-wing" European
politicians, in particular, of taking a position which "could be constructed
as protecting the [Iraqi] regime" and expressed "serious reservations" about
the ability of Dr. Hans Blix, the UN chief weapons inspector, and his team of
conventional and atomic arms specialists, to effectively report on Iraq. He
also predicted that Iraq was only the first "in a long list of dictatorships
and countries" which "harbor terrorists"; others, including Iran, Syria and
North Korea, also "merited the international community's attention."

Born in 1944, Richard Perle attended high-school in Los Angeles and graduated
from UCLA and Princeton in 1969, with degrees in international relations. He
immediately went to Washington to work for Albert Wohlstetter, regarded as
the Rand Corporation's "intellectual master of strategic analysis", on a
committee to lobby for ABM funding. He took a job with Senator Henry (Scoop)
Jackson, a conservative Washington Democrat, and a major influence on the
Senate Armed Services Committee. Perle worked for Jackson for almost ten
years, opposing the arms control activities of three White House
administrations. He persuaded Richard Nixon to purge the Arms Control and
Disarmament Agency (ACDA) of staffers who had negotiated the SALT 1 Treaty
with the Soviet Union, and the Carter administration not to ratify SALT II.
In February 1983, Perle told "Newsweek" that "democracies will not sacrifice
to protect their security in the absence of danger, and every time we create
the impression that we and the Soviets are cooperating and moderating the
competition, we diminish the sense of apprehension."

Appointed Assistant Secretary of Defense in the Reagan administration, Perle
regarded the Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev's genuine proposals on disa
rmament as "pure propaganda", according to historian Frances Fitzgerald, in
her excellent history of the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), "Way Out
There In The Blue" (Touchstone, NY, 2000). In fact, Perle initially took no
interest in SDI, describing it as "the product of millions of American
teenagers putting quarters in video machines", according to Strobe Talbott in
"Master of the Game - Paul Nitze and the Nuclear Peace" (Knopf, NY, 1988). He
believed SDI would give Congress an excuse to oppose the development of
"offensive weapons systems." However, he came to regard "Star Wars" as the
"ultimate weapon against arms control" and even liked the nickname, according
to Fitzgerald, telling colleagues in Washington "it's a good movie, besides
the good guys won."

Apart from his duties at the Pentagon, Richard Perle is also chief executive
of Hollinger Digital, part of the group which published the London-based
"Daily Telegraph" and a board member of the "Jerusalem Post". He is regarded
by both hawks and the anti-war lobby in Washington, as a "master of
disinformation" and the "moderate" Secretary of State, Colin Powell --
moderate in comparison to the Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld axis of war -- refers
privately to Perle and his associates as "the bombers." This clique includes
the "Wall Street Journal" editorial page, the "Weekly Standard" and "Bill
Safire, his mouthpiece at the New York Times", according to Jude Wanniski, a
former colleague and "buddy" of Perle whom he met during the 1969 Nixon
administration. Wanniski later became a self-confessed "peacenik" when the
Cold War ended and is a vocal opponent of current White House gun-boat,
cruise missile, hair-trigger diplomacy.

The "cosy and cleverly-constructed network" of Middle East "experts"
surrounding Perle, according to "Guardian" journalist, Brian Whitaker, in an
article last August, centers on Washington-based re

The Nightmare is here

I have been following the voxnyc.com news site now for a while
(Very Closely) A strange thing happened just prior to the raid.
Voxfux had been having a "back and fourth" with a real
belligerent jerk who had been posting under the name "Unknown
Soldier" Vox had essentially tracked his usage to a number of
postings by this same jerk. Then vox's final exchange was that
this guy was spoofing his IP (which only hackers and intelligence
agents do) Since this jerk "Unknown Soldier" is no hacker then
maybe...

You get the drift.

Then Vox announced that this guy was operating on rasserver.net
which is a VERY SUSPICIOUS internet company. With a strange kind
of administration which never responds to any complaints about
it's many violations regarding some illegal activity is
undertakes on a daily basis. Also rasserver.net seems immune to
any Internet authorities' regarding their constant and flagrant
violations of common Internet rules and regulations.

Vox indicating that rasserver could be an organ of the CIA.

Then he looked into rasserver's parent company ICG and discovered
that ICG Communications Inc had decended into bankrupcy just days
after Bush siezed the presidency. Hmmm.

He accused ICG Communications Inc of being possible the next
Enron scandal, only this time Vox has claimed that ICG was
actually taken over by an intelligence group (CIA or EX CIA) and
that it had undertaken a scheme to drive the stock proice into
the ground, only to rip off investors, and then when the stock
reached rock bottom they bought up the stock and are now poised
to become fabulously wealthy.

Apparently they drove the stock price from 36 dollars to 36
cents.

Then vox mentioned something about the CEO's involved with ICG
were intelligence assets. The new CEO is in fact a Jesuit
(Graduated from LOYOLA university which specializes in
Intellegence, political, industrial economic intelligence.

The strange thing is that there is no trace of that exchange that
was on vox's web site. What is even stranger is that this
"Unknown Soldier" Who vox pointed out also posts under the name
"Soaring Eagle" This Soaring Eagle posted a very spooky veiled
threat which is still up on the site it is a passage from George
Orwell's 1984 about Big Brothers ability to obliterate every
trace of a persons life so that no one would ever know that he
existed.

I for one checked out the ICG Communications story and it does
indeed look VERY FISHY.

I believe the Bush threat is just a pretext, the real reason for
the raid might be the ICG Communications story, which as I said
has mysteriously dissappeared from the voxnyc website.

Lawsuit alleges Barrick plotted to undermine gold price;
'Ludicrous,' company says

Steve Maich
National Post, Canada
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Thursday, December 19, 2002

http://www.nationalpost.com/home/story.html?id={B81521F1-7672-4101-
8EC2-8EA289F89210}

A large U.S. metals dealer is suing Canada's biggest gold
mining company and one of the largest banks in the United
States, alleging the two conspired to drive down the price
of gold and manipulate world financial markets for the past
15 years.

The lawsuit, filed by New Orleans-based metals dealer
Blanchard & Co. in Louisiana District Court, says Barrick
Gold Corp. and J.P. Morgan Chase hatched a scheme to
sink gold prices through a complex system of derivatives
trades and off-balance-sheet deals.

The suit claims that, if not for Barrick and J.P. Morgan's
intervention in the market, gold would now be worth close
to US$740 an ounce, more than double the US$343.25 it
closed at yesterday.

Barrick calls the suit "ludicrous."

Barrick, controlled by multi-millionaire chairman Peter
Munk, promised yesterday to vigorously defend itself.

In its statement of claim, Blanchard said Barrick's alleged
actions have "pointedly reduced market interest in
Blanchard products and resulted in a significant loss of
business."

It said the effects on its bottom line "continue to this day,"
saying in the claim that the alleged price-manipulation
caused many of its customers to stop buying gold.

None of Blanchard's allegations have been proven in court.

Vince Borg, a Barrick spokesman, said the company had not
received an official copy of the suit, but a press release
issued by Blanchard contained numerous inaccuracies and
defamatory statements. A J.P. Morgan spokesman said the
bank had not yet received copies of the suit and therefore
had no comment.

Several investors and analysts said the case may finally air
out one of the most enduring controversies in the public markets.

For years, investors and obscure mining newsletters have
accused Barrick and its partners of using complicated hedging
strategies to capitalize on, and even actively encourage, a
decline in the gold price.

Barrick has steadfastly denied these allegations, claiming
their derivative trades are intended to mitigate risk of falling
prices and do not unfairly sway the market.

Conspiracy theories, often propagated through Internet chat
rooms, have gone far beyond criticism of Barrick's hedging
strategy to allege some of the most powerful figures in the
world financial markets have conspired to depress the price
of gold to prop up the U.S. dollar and world stock markets.
Some conspiracy theorists have also cited Alan Greenspan,
chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve, and other leading
central bankers as key players.

This lawsuit represents the first attempt by a large and
well-financed market player to force more disclosure about
what role major mining companies may have played in the
49 percent drop in the price of gold since 1987.

Gold was once an important asset class. But over the past
two decades, its appeal has waned. Many long-suffering gold
investors claim heavy selling by mining companies and banks
has unfairly hastened its fall and has cost investors untold
millions.

"There have been rumours for years around J.P. Morgan's
gold derivatives, and more recently there have been questions
raised about Barrick's off-balance-sheet items, and the
extreme complexity of their derivatives," said Jean-Marie
Eveillard, who owns Barrick stock in the gold mutual fund
he manages for Société Générale Asset Management Corp.
in New York. "In a sense, this lawsuit

If you ever bothered to read the magazine that you happily put shit on in
public, you would have seen this standard reflected in all our articles,
but that aside ...

It could be argued indeed that the Rothschilds have financed both sides
of most wars for a century or three. Behind what we are taught in
history books, it can be easily seen that prior to WWI, most wars were
actually fought over the control of currency issuance. Since WWI - wars
merely got rid of opposition to a global trade/global currency agenda.
[It seems that aspirations of nationalism are just not allowed - join the
Global Govt agenda willingly or be replaced by a Global Govt agenda
puppet is the bottom line outcome I have observed]

Religion and oil are just early layers of the onion, beneath the 'skin'
that is called 'weapons of mass destruction', 'regime change' or 'the war
on terror'.

I still believe that the real motive for this war is the behind the
scenes weaponisation of space, concealed in a new shroud of 'national
security' and increased, untraceable black budgets. The intentional
agenda to also remove civil rights and freedoms is an added bonus.

It is the old classic magicians trick - focus attention on one hand while
the other does the real work unnoticed. The other hand in this case
being the placement into space of surveillance and weapon technology that
most readers of this list would consider science fiction.

The Rothschilds or Rockefellers could tomorrow release into the public
domain, the patents of Nikola Tesla held under National Security. I
refer specifically to the patents dealing with the Transmission and
Reception of Energy Transmitted Over a Distance, without any loss of
energy over that distance. And Tesla is just one example of suppressed
technology that would rid us of the nonsensical internal combustion
engine, hydroelectricity or nuclear energy.

It's not just oil, it's not just religion, it's just more power and
control they are after, and this time they have a new level of technology
they want to use to maintain and perpetuate this control.

Werner von Braun himself warned of this very scenario, and tasked Dr
Carol Rosin to keep attention on this hidden agenda which he was privvy
to.

Decades ago he specifically warned of a covert agenda to weaponise space
- the outcome of which secured global domination. The agenda of which he
warned was specifically made up of four 'steps', in a particular order.

He warned of four bogus, manufactured 'threats' to the USA and its
allies. Each of these 'threats', he said, would be used to instigate the
acknowledgement and implementation of a need for weapons in orbit/space.

The four threats he

Danger To America - The "Insiders"
The Devil We're Fighting Has No Horns Or Tail

By: Jim Moore

Funny thing about evil: it's invisible most of the time, and even when you see it you
don't always recognize it as evil.

So, put your imagination into high gear and spend a moment with me discussing
evil---specifically the evil that's slowly and systematically destroying America.

Nine out of ten people probably won't know what I'm talking about. If you are one of
them, read on anyway. We need you.

Which do you feel is the most destructive force at work in America today, abortion,
racial tensions, street crime? Lost jobs, slow economy, high taxes? Broken homes, poor
schooling, illegal immigration, impending war?

The answer is none of the above.

The single most destructive force at work in America today is a malevolent,
behind-the-scenes group of powerful people who, little by little, are stealing our
freedoms.

I call them the Enemy---only because Big Brother is already taken.

This stealer of our liberty is a generational cartel of wealthy, bright individuals
known in financial and political circles as the international power elite who, meeting
quietly and in secret, work toward a world government of subservient nations and
people, over which they will reign supreme

You think that's an overstatement? Look around. Don't we see unmistakable signs of
that world government being formed already?

The Enemy, then, is a global conspiracy in every sense of the word, but because the
term conspiracy is so misunderstood, a definition of it is in order.

Webster defines conspiracy as "an agreement to perform together an illegal,
treacherous, or evil act." The Enemy, with its world-wide scope and tyrannical intent,
fits this description of an international conspiracy perfectly.

The Enemy's methods are manipulation, deceit, and subterfuge; its target is the free
nations of the world, and its objective is subservience, domination, and total
economic and political control, not just of America, but eventually of the world.

Now you're thinking-- but the idea of a conspiracy isn't new, right?

True enough, but the average American has no idea what a monstrosity the conspiracy
has become, because the subtlety, secrecy, and ultimate goal of it is beyond the
purview of most people. That's because no decent individual can conceive of how a
person, or group of persons, could be so evil and devoid of conscience.

In his Blue Book, written back in 1959, Robert Welch, founder of the John Birch
Society, called our Enemy--the Insiders. Which they were, and still are. But since
then, the Enemy has taken the forms of many negative factions, organizations, and
"isms", communism, socialism, and many more, which are operating freely in America
today.

It's truly amazing that a half century ago, Welsh was already aware of who the real
Enemy of America was, and though he identified it as the Insiders, he could not
foresee that it would gradually morph into a Hydra, a lethal beast with many heads.

He did, however, lay out n his Blue Book five, pointed statements to help us
understand the Enemy, so that it might be destroyed before it destroys us.

Here is the essence of those five statements:

ONE: America's battle with the Enemy is not one of ideology. We are not in a war of
words. Conservatives think all they have to do is win a debate with Liberals who
ridicule the theory of a conspiratorial Enemy, and the battle is over. Nothing could
be further from the truth. The reality is, America is in an intense battle for freedom
from any kind of tyranny, and you don't win that fight by out-debating your opponent.

TWO: Some people still think the main danger lies in a physical attack, but our REAL
Enemy does not think that way. A surprise military threat would only draw attention
from the Enemy's takeover of the nation by internal subversion, which is going on all
the time. It also serves as an excuse for the Enemy to seize more reins of power and
establish more controls by the conspirators who are conquering us from the inside.

THREE: Americans fail to realize that the Enemy works in the shadowy world of mental
manipulation. One hand distracts your attention while the other hand does the
deceptive work--as when you amuse children with make-believe and magic, or startle
spectators with feats of legerdemain and illusions. The result is you are always
fooled.

FOUR: People with vested interests, who believe the Enemy's lies, can hardly be
expected to admit that what they've been told, and what they believe to be true, is
false. This hurts their pride and their reputation as knowledgeable sophisticates in
the country clubs and the business world. So they refuse to recognize the poison
they're swallowing.

FIVE: Most people are jellyfish dressed in human clothes. If some are aware that
America is in danger, they don't have any idea how it can be stopped. If it can be,
they say, "Let Geo

Our Politically Correct Theologian-in-Chief

There is little argument over the fact that G. W. Bush was elected President partly
due to the strength of his Christian profession. Yes, America is still comprised of a
host of Christian people. Statistics show that of those Christians who voted in the
2000 presidential election, the vast majority voted for Bush.

Bush's Christian profession has served him well as a constant blanket of protection
from criticism. Even though many of his policies diametrically oppose fundamental
Christian teaching, Bush continues to enjoy immense popularity among evangelical
Christians. Why? They feel he is one of them.

However, President Bush has repeatedly demonstrated colossal ignorance of Biblical
truth. The latest example of this ineptness occurred just recently as Bush gushed over
the Muslim religion during Ramadan.

While worshipping at the Islamic Center of Washington, Bush remarked, "Islam traces
its origins back to God's call on Abraham. And Ramadan commemorates the revelation of
God's word in the Holy Koran to the prophet Mohammed."

Does Mr. Bush not realize that the Holy Bible, not the Koran, is the one and only
written revelation of God to man? Is he that ignorant of Christian teaching? Or, was
he deliberately denying Christian doctrine in order to curry favor with his Muslim
hosts?

It appears that we not only have a Commander-in-Chief, we also have a
Theologian-in-Chief. Unfortunately, the theology officially embraced by this
administration seems to be the theology of political correctness.

Even more disturbing is the manner in which Christian ministers have accepted Bush's
apostasy. At the national level, only Pat Robertson and Franklin Graham seem willing
to correctly identify the Muslim religion for what it is: a religion of violence and
hatred.

In an attempt to be politically correct, President Bush and the Christian ministers
who continually defend him are jeopardizing our children's future by obfuscating
America's distinct Christian heritage. If this trend continues, the U.S. will quickly
join Great Britain as the next developing Muslim state.

TOCOM gold at 5 1/2-year high in panic buying

TOKYO, Dec. 19 (Reuters) -- Tokyo gold
futures ended a frantic morning session at
5 1/2-year highs on Thursday as roiling war
clouds over Iraq triggered a storm of stop-
loss buying.

All yen-based gold contracts except the new
December 2003 benchmark finished limit-up at
lifetime highs. Turnover was a staggering
144,782 lots or 144.8 tonnes in the morning,
well over Wednesday's full-day tally of
107,336 lots. Individual investors on the
Tokyo Commodity Exchange took their cue from
spot bullion's surge to a new 5 1/2-year high
as jittery Australian investors piled money
into safe-haven assets.

But dealers said Tokyo's fireworks were
mainly ignited by trading houses after an
early burst of speculative buying on TOCOM,
with panic setting in as spot gold's rise
above $347 an ounce released a volley of
stop-loss orders.

"Iraq is just an excuse," a trader with a big
Japanese trading house said. "I believe none
of the traders would say they didn't expect
this. Everybody has been talking about
military action in Iraq for three or four
months."

News that the United States was likely to
declare Iraq in violation of a U.N.
disarmament resolution sent oil prices
soaring and added sparkle to gold's
traditional image as insurance against
trouble.

The United States said on Wednesday it saw no
sign Iraq would comply with demands to
disarm, while Washington's closest ally
Britain gave a clear signal it was preparing
for war against Baghdad next year.

Making its debut, the December contract
finished the morning session at 1,360 yen per
gram, a level not seen for benchmark gold
since May 9, 1997. Other months ended up by
the daily price limit of 40 yen.

Spot gold was fetching $348.50/349.50 an
ounce during TOCOM's lunch break, up from
$342.00/75 last quoted in New York.

Spurred by U.S. sabre-rattling against Iraq,
a weak dollar and strong oil prices, gold has
risen nearly 25 percent this year, making it
one of the best-performing financial assets.

A weak greenback makes dollar-based bullion
cheaper for non-U.S. buyers. For Japanese
investors, however, it makes yen-based gold
futures more expensive -- a consideration
that traders and analysts said was capping
the Tokyo market.

"Still people are worried about a stronger
yen," the trader said. "If the United States
starts attacking Iraq, the dollar would
collapse. So in yen terms, the price surge is
rather vulnerable."

Gold Shines Through War Clouds

By James Regan

SYDNEY, Dec. 19 (Reuters) -- Nervous
investors piled into gold in Australia on
Thursday, extending an overnight price rally
in the United States as fear of war in the
Middle East mounted and oil prices soared.
Gold bullion still trades hundreds of dollars
below the $800 an ounce it fetched in 1980,
though a frenzy of post-New York trading
polished the metal to a fresh 5 1/2-year peak
of $347 an ounce in active Asian trade.

"The war factor is driving up gold, there's
no doubt," said Commonwealth Bank of
Australia commodities strategist David
Thurtell.

Many New York bullion dealers would have left
their desks for the night with gold fetching
$342.00 an ounce, itself a sharp $4 rise on
the benchmark $338 an ounce fixing price set
earlier in the day by the London Bullion
Market Association.

But bullion banks in Australia early on were
buzzing with a second gold rush as investors
simply crossed time zones to the start of a
new day in the southern hemisphere.

By the time bullion dealers in Hong Kong
opened shop, gold continued its shining
streak.

"We're seeing a fair bit of buying activity
post-New York," a bullion dealer in Sydney
said.

Scholars Scrutinize the Koran's Origin

New York Times (and International Herald Tribune), March 4, 2002

Scholars Are Quietly Offering New Theories of the Koran
By ALEXANDER STILLE

To Muslims the Koran is the very word of God, who spoke through
the Angel Gabriel to Muhammad: "This book is not to be doubted,"
the Koran declares unequivocally at its beginning. Scholars and
writers in Islamic countries who have ignored that warning have
sometimes found themselves the target of death threats and
violence, sending a chill through universities around the
world.

Yet despite the fear, a handful of experts have been quietly
investigating the origins of the Koran, offering radically new theories
about the text's meaning and the rise of Islam.

Christoph Luxenberg, a scholar of ancient Semitic languages in
Germany, argues that the Koran has been misread and
mistranslated for centuries. His work, based on the earliest copies of
the Koran, maintains that parts of Islam's holy book are derived from
pre-existing Christian Aramaic texts that were misinterpreted by later
Islamic scholars who prepared the editions of the Koran commonly
read today.

So, for example, the virgins who are supposedly awaiting good
Islamic martyrs as their reward in paradise are in reality "white
raisins" of crystal clarity rather than fair maidens.

Christoph Luxenberg, however, is a pseudonym, and his scholarly
tome The Syro-Aramaic Reading of the Koran had trouble finding a
publisher, although it is considered a major new work by several
leading scholars in the field. Verlag Das Arabische Buch in Berlin
ultimately published the book.

The caution is not surprising. Salman Rushdie's Satanic Verses
received a fatwa because it appeared to mock Muhammad. The
Egyptian novelist Naguib Mahfouz was stabbed because one of his
books was thought to be irreligious. And when the Arab scholar
Suliman Bashear argued that Islam developed as a religion
gradually rather than emerging fully formed from the mouth of the
Prophet, he was injured after being thrown from a second-story
window by his students at the University of Nablus in the West
Bank. Even many broad-minded liberal Muslims become upset
when the historical veracity and authenticity of the Koran is
questioned.

The reverberations have affected non-Muslim scholars in Western
countries. "Between fear and political correctness, it's not possible
to say anything other than sugary nonsense about Islam," said one
scholar at an American university who asked not to be named,
referring to the threatened violence as well as the widespread
reluctance on United States college campuses to criticize other
cultures.

While scriptural interpretation may seem like a remote and
innocuous activity, close textual study of Jewish and Christian
scripture played no small role in loosening the Church's domination
on the intellectual and cultural life of Europe, and paving the way for
unfettered secular thought. "The Muslims have the benefit of
hindsight of the European experience, and they know very well that
once you start questioning the holy scriptures, you don't know where
it will stop," the scholar explained.

The touchiness about questioning the Koran predates the latest rise
of Islamic militancy. As long ago as 1977, John Wansbrough of the
School of Oriental and African Studies in London wrote that
subjecting the Koran to "analysis by the instruments and techniques
of biblical criticism is virtually unknown."

Mr. Wansbrough insisted that the text of the Koran appeared to be a
composite of different voices or texts compiled over dozens if not
hundreds of years. After all, scholars agree that there is no evidence
of the Koran until 691 ó 59 years after Muhammad's death ó when
the Dome of the Rock mosque in Jerusalem was built, carrying
several Koranic inscriptions.

These inscriptions differ to some degree from the version of the
Koran that has been handed down through the centuries,
suggesting, scholars say, that the Koran may have still been
evolving in the last decade of the seventh century. Moreover, much
of what we know as Islam ó the lives and sayings of the Prophet ó is
based on texts from between 130 and 300 years after Muhammad's
death.

In 1977 two other scholars from the School for Oriental and African
Studies at London University ó Patricia Crone (a professor of history
at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton) and Michael Cook
(a professor of Near Eastern history at Princeton University) ó
suggested a radically new approach in their book Hagaris

A private equity group with interests in everything from soda pop to self-
propelled guns has nipped off a piece of CSX.

After the bell Tuesday, transportation giant CSX announced that it would sell
a majority stake in its domestic container shipping unit -- CSX Lines -- to
the Carlyle Group for approximately $240 million in cash and $60 million in
securities.

The deal, subject to regulatory approval, is expected to close in the first
quarter of 2003.

According to Michael Ward, CSX president, "completion of this transaction is
consistent with our long-stated strategy of becoming a more rail-based
organization, strengthens our balance sheet and provides shareholders with
significant value."

CSX Lines, which moves goods between the continental United States and
Alaska, Hawaii, Guam and Puerto Rico, accounted for about 8 percent of the
company's $8 billion in revenues last year.

Shares of CSX (CSX: news, chart, profile) closed up 20 cents at $29.35
Tuesday.

The sale comes just days after CSX CEO John Snow was tapped by the White
House to be the new Secretary of the Treasury.

The Carlyle Group is headed by Frank Carlucci, former secretary of defense in
the Reagan administration. Other prominent players at the private global
investment firm include William E. Kennard, former FCC chairman, Arthur
Levitt, former SEC chairman, James Baker, III, former secretary of state, and
John Major, former prime minister of Great Britain.

Former president Bush has also lobbied Saudi Arabia on behalf of Carlyle

Bush Nominates Himself to Chair 9/11 Investigation
  By William Rivers Pitt
  t r u t h o u t | Perspective

Thursday, 19 December, 2002

George W. Bush has tapped Thomas Kean to chair the independent investigation
into the attacks of September 11th. This nomination comes in the wake of the
choice of Henry Kissinger for that post, and his sudden departure. Kissinger,
considered a master of secrets and a war criminal to boot, was an odd pick
for the post to say the least. He resigned rather than give up the list of
clients he has served since leaving public life, as the 9/11 victims families
had demanded and the protocols of security clearance had required. One
wonders what manner of Kissinger clients could have caused a 'conflict of
interest' in a terrorism investigation, but that question will have to wait.

In a perfect world, Kean would be a standard-issue Republican. He is
President of Drew University. He served from 1982 through 1990 as Governor of
New Jersey, enjoying high popularity among his constituents and warm
relations with labor groups. He is the former chairman of the National
Environmental Education and Training Foundation; he is a board member of the
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the World Wildlife Fund, the National Center
for Learning Disabilities, and the National Endowment for Democracy.

Kean led the U.S. delegation to the World Conference on Education for All in
Thailand in 1990; he was vice chairman for the U.S. delegation to the Fourth
U.N. World Conference on Women in 1995; he served on the advisory board to
the President's Initiative on Race from 1997 to 1998; he is currently
chairman of the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy; he served as a
board member of America's Promise, a foundation for improving America's youth
created by Presidents Clinton, Bush, Carter, Ford and Reagan (who was
represented at the group's inception by his wife, Nancy).

That is an impressive record.

Kean is also a director for the petroleum giant Amerada Hess, the food
services corporation Amarak, and the Pepsi Bottling Group. Kean is likewise a
board member of the Fiduciary Trust Company International. He is a former
board member for the CIT Group and UnitedHealth Group.

It is his association with Hess that has drawn concern from 9/11 victims
groups, because Hess has business agreements with Saudi Arabia and oil
exploration facilities in Indonesia and Malaysia. The latter countries are
widely believed to be home to al Qaeda terrorists, while the former has
become notorious for its association with Wahabbi fundamentalism, Osama bin
Laden, and a majority of the 9/11 hijackers. Kristen Breitweister, the co-
chairman of Sept. 11 Advocates who lost her husband in the World Trade Center
attacks, said of Kean's nomination: "I'm collecting all the information so
when we meet with all the commissioners we'll be able to properly ask all the
questions. I'm not even at a point where I'm considering whether or not he
would be good at it."

There can be no question that Kean's nomination is a quantum improvement over
Kissinger. However, it was a curious choice. Kean has been out of politics
since 1990, and is a virtual unknown on the national stage. It is clear that
he enjoys philanthropic work, but it is also clear that he has strong ties to
some heavy hitters in the business community and the petroleum industry. He
has not the massive ego of Kissinger, nor aspirations to high office, having
gotten out twelve years ago after deciding that the political rat race had
become distasteful. He has virtually no experience in foreign policy,
intelligence, or national security matters.

In many ways, this was a non-nomination. Kean has much to lose and little to
gain from chairing this investigation. In the final analysis, it appears that
Bush has nominated someone who will be easily controlled by the
administration. Kean does not possess, by dint of experience, the wherewithal
to ask the difficult questions that must be pressed if this investigation is
to be successful. His is not, and never has been, the kind of boat-rocker
that will be necessary to pry the truth from the administration, the CIA, the
FBI, the NSA and the Department of Defense.

It is vital in this to remember that the Bush administration thwarted this
independent investigation for 18 months, until they got the two things they
wanted. What they wanted was a requirement that any subpoenas would be issued
only after six of the ten people on the commission voted for it. The
commission is comprised of five Democrats and five Republicans. If a
particular subpoena seems to cut too close to the political bone, the
Republicans on the committee need only stand shoulder to shoulder to stop it.

The other requirement the Bush administration demanded was the right to pick
the chairman of the commission. One need look no further than the first
choice, Henry Kissinger, to see the reasons

U.S. BALKS AT IRAQI INVASION - GLOBAL ECONOMIC OPPOSITION SUCCEEDING

Risks of A Massive Global Conflict Increase with Each New Successful
Economic Effort to Slow the Empire's Expansion

by Michael C. Ruppert

[© Copyright, 2002, From The Wilderness Publications, www.fromthewilderness.com. All rights reserved.

Dec. 19 2002, 1400 PST, (FTW) - Over the last three months the world has successfully demonstrated that it can delay and obstruct U.S. plans to occupy the oil fields of Iraq and Saudi Arabia. This is both good news and bad news. Today's UN developments regarding Iraq's statement on weapons of mass destruction have served to increase the stakes over U.S. plans to occupy that country. The Empire's feet of clay are rooted in monumental budget deficits, trade deficits, fraudulent financial markets, cheap oil and rigged gold prices. It is on these fronts that the battle for Iraq is now being fought.

The fact that the planned invasion of Iraq did not occur as was originally planned in late September in no way diminishes the accuracy of FTW's prediction that it was planned for that time. In our lead essay for the November issue of FTW -"Wheels Come Off U.S. War Plans for Iraq" - we explained very clearly that resistance on a number of economic and political fronts around the world was having an impact on the Empire's agenda. This is a gratifying and positive development and a sign that there are tactics that are being successfully used to delay United States imperial aggression in violation of international law, basic American values, human rights and common sense.

We believe that a clear example of the backstage economic "negotiations" has been a recent bust-out of world gold prices coupled with near panic buying on some Asian markets as reported today by Reuters. And with gold threatening $350 an ounce (a more than 25% increase this year) U.S. financial powerhouses like J.P. Morgan Chase and Citigroup, which have for decades engaged in manipulation of gold prices, are seriously threatened. Their derivatives bubbles ($40 trillion in the case of Morgan alone) could pop as a result of demands for physical gold reconciliation with paper gold accounts and the U.S. economy could be devastated as a result.

Another case in point is the ongoing Venezuelan crisis, artificially manipulated by the U.S. government which has resulted in what may be unjustified fears of oil price spikes as we enter what may be the worst winter in a decade. As we have previously reported, since World War II, oil price spikes invariably lead to recession and the U.S. economy is teetering at that point now. Recession may, in fact, be too mild a word. The market fundamentals leading to the economic warning we issued last July, just before the Dow Jones fell off a cliff, remain unchanged and the savviest world leaders understand the basic vulnerabilities in the U.S. economy.

Just today, December 19, 2002, as UN Chief Weapons Inspector Hans Blix reported negatively to the UN Security Council on Iraqi compliance, we see continued evidence that behind-the-scenes diplomatic and economic pressures are continuing to slow down U.S. efforts to control the second largest oil reserves on the planet. FTW agrees strongly with former UN weapons inspector Scott Ritter who spoke recently in San Francisco and with U.C. Berkeley professor and author Peter Dale Scott that a U.S. invasion of Iraq will - in addition to Iraq's 11% - see a near-simultaneous occupation of key oil fields in Saudi Arabia holding another 25% of all the oil reserves on the planet. Recent revelations that anticipated Caspian Basin reserves have been wildly overestimated only intensify Peak Oil issues for every nation and increase the tensions over what happens in Iraq. Each industrialized nation knows that unless it secures a piece of the Middle East oil pie its survivability in coming oil crises is in question. There are no more significant oil deposits left to find, especially where the Empire has not already marked them with its scent.

Today, White House spokesman Ari Fleischer indicated that there would be no immediate move to invade Iraq or toward unilateral action on the part of the U.S. in spite of statements by U.S. Ambassador to the UN John Negroponte that Iraq was in material breach of UN resolution 1441. It now appears that no additional action will be taken in the Security Council until late January. That would indicate that the soonest that a U.S. invasion could occur would be sometime in February. That would also come perilously close to making it a certainty that U.S. military operations in the region could be continuing as temperatures rise to near-summer levels in the late spring.

These delays are a mixed blessing. While providing evidence that there are strategies that can derail the unilateral

1) Both parties have used race at times to attract votes, but this
week's Time and Newsweek magazines smeared only Republicans, and
especially conservatives, as the ones exploiting white resentments

The effects are still being felt today." It only took 40 years.
Time even portrayed the Contract with America as racist.

"Grand Old Segregationists" announced the headline over an online-
only piece by Newsweek's Eleanor Clift who contended: "With one
stupid and thoughtless attempt at humor, Lott stripped away the
carefully constructed facade the Bush team erected at the GOP
convention in 2000 and revealed the party's true colors." Jack
White charged in an online posting for Time that Ronald Reagan
"set a standard for exploiting white anger and resentment rarely
seen since George Wallace stood in the schoolhouse door."

3) President George Bush "is just dim," actor George Clooney
claims in the upcoming February issue of GQ magazine, the New York
Post's "Page Six" revealed on Wednesday. The Post writers relayed
how GQ reports that Clooney believes Mario Cuomo should be
President, keeps a photo of Jimmy Carter's ER set visit on display
in his bathroom and "likens Newt Gingrich to a 'dinosaur,'
laughing, 'the man has no arms.'"

4) You can't imagine PBS airing a missionary film promoting the
wonders of Christianity or treating basic elements of the
Christian faith as fact, but that apparently is just what PBS did
with a two-hour look at the Muslim faith aired Wednesday night on
most PBS stations, "Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet." Human Events
Online has posted a critical look by Daniel Pipes at the PBS show:
"PBS ignores an ongoing scholarly reassessment of Muhammad's life
that disputes every detail...of its film. This silence is
especially odd when contrasted" with a 1998 PBS documentary which
focused "almost exclusively on the work of cutting-edge scholars
and presents the latest in critical thinking on Jesus."

5) The results are in for the "Best Notable Quotables of 2002, the
15th Annual Awards for the Year's Worst Reporting." A panel of 52
leading media observers judged 17 award categories and the winning
quotes and top runners-up have been posted on the MRC's home page.

> 1) Though the Democratic Party was the party of segregation
since federal troops left the South in the 1870s and Democrats
suppressed blacks for the next century, a legacy reenforced a
couple of weeks ago when Louisiana maintained its near-130 year
refusal to elect a Republican to the U.S. Senate, this week's Time
and Newsweek magazines smeared Republicans, and especially
conservatives, as the ones exploiting white resentments against
blacks.

Clearly, the record of both parties is not clean as operatives
and candidates for both at various times have tried to pit one
race against the other, but the magazines used the Trent Lott
situation to malign only Republicans and conservatives. A headline
in Newsweek declared: "Trent Lott and the GOP grew up t

The Parish Pastor of Nairobi's St Andrew's Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA), one of the oldest traditional churches in Kenya, said recently that Freemasonry needs to be abolished, citing, "It has no moral standing in the wider community," he said. The Mungiki movement with some 4 million followers, has accused the Freemasons of involvement in the disappearance of children and a mysterious string of murders that have recently rocked Nairobi. The pronouncement came after a consortium of churches, during an interdenominational conference, called for the total ban on Freemasonry in Kenya. The Nanyuki conference, attended by officials of the National Council of Churches, Evangelical Fellowship of Kenya, the Catholic Church and representatives of the Independent Churches of Kenya, lashed out at the Freemason society, accusing it of "engaging in undercurrent activities." The churches pointed out that Freemasonry is a secretive society whose activities may not be good to the welfare of the human society.  On 3 September, Rev. think the best thing Chief Ahenakew could do to make amends is to turn all

''All the news that's fit to print, except unfavorable news about Israel''
By Raff Ellis
YellowTimes.org Columnist (United States)

(YellowTimes.org) – Everyone knows the above popular slogan, slightly modified of course, belongs to a major national newspaper. In today's world, such slogans have become entirely meaningless and are as hollow as the sound you get banging on an empty oil drum. Equally meaningless are the names of newspapers, which in yesteryear were meant to signify integrity in news reporting. The herald, tribune, sentinel, beacon, chronicle, etc. are names associated with the ancient tradition of information gathering and distribution. Sadly, that tradition has fallen victim to the corporate and political manipulation that has rendered unbiased reporting obsolete.

In today's world the information dissemination business operates like a pretzel factory where the stories are twisted, formed, sprinkled with the salt of bias and baked into a palatable product for consumption by an increasingly gullible public. The resulting "news" is meant to taste good and to be consumed without question.

Although examples of bias run across the spectrum of special interests, the most egregious examples come from the treatment of news about the Middle East. Criticizing the state of Israel is not good policy in America, either for newsmen or politicians. Therefore, the best examples of media bias come from the lack of coverage of bad acts. Here's a sampling of the accounts you missed.

Item 1. United Nations relief workers in Afghanistan were summarily shot by government troops as they awaited transport to their billets. The soldiers ordered the workers to kneel down and face the ground, then unexpectedly showered them with a barrage of bullets, killing seven and wounding many others. What! Oops, my mistake. It wasn't UN workers and Afghanis; it was Palestinian workers in Rishon Lezion of the West Bank shot by Israeli soldiers on May 20, 1990, as they awaited transport to Gaza.

Item 2. Jewish men in Basra, Iraq, were stripped naked at gunpoint in the street and forced to walk home in utter humiliation while their friends and relatives looked on. You guessed it. It wasn't in Iraq but in the West Bank city of Nablus on November 24, 2002 where Palestinian men were forced to undress by Israeli soldiers. "They forced Yasser Sharaf, 25, to take off all his clothes including his underwear...They ordered him to walk like a dog and then he burst into tears," Palestinian fireman Samir el Lifdawi said of one of the men. To compound the humiliation, a Reuters photographer recorded the scene.

Item 3. The former chief mufti in Saudi Arabia openly advocated a 'Final Solution' to annihilate the Jews. Speaking at the widely broadcast sermon marking the end of Ramadan, he declared of the Jews: "Allah shall return their deeds on their own heads, waste their seed and exterminate them, devastate them and vanish them from this world. It is forbidden to be merciful to them. You must send missiles to them and annihilate them. They are evil and damnable." You guessed it; I did it again. The reason you never read this shocking and provocative story is that it happened in Israel and it was former chief rabbi Ovadia Yossef, who is also a founder and spiritual leader of the religious Shas party (Israel's third largest political party). He made these remarks in a speech marking the end of the Passover fast, openly advocating a 'Final Solution' to annihilate the Palestinians.

Item 4. Egyptian troops invaded the Jewish quarter of Cairo and desecrated the Hebrew temple by blowing up the entrance, causing serious damage to the structure. After entering, they defecated and urinated inside the temple, arresting the rabbi and the cantor before leaving the premises. You're catching on; it didn't happen in Egypt but in Jenin and Dura, Palestine, and it was Israeli soldiers and a mosque, not a Jewish temple. The opprobrious behavior occurred in Jenin on 24 November 2002, and in Dura on 25 September 2002. In Jenin, Israeli soldiers blew up the entrance to the mosque and then entered without taking their boots off, tore up religious texts and arrested the imam and muezzin (caller of prayer) before leaving the premises. In Dura, the Israeli troops urinated and defecated inside the Mosque and placed the Israeli flag atop the building's minaret.

Had these stories been atrocities against Jews or Israelis instead of Palestinians or Arabs, the headlines would have screamed out at us. The President and various congressmen would have loudly and subserviently condemned such acts, and I guarantee it wouldn't have been with the mild rebukes we've heard such as, "It was a bit heavy handed."

I could continue with a lengthy rendition of the many atrocities, including rape and robbery, in addition to wanton murder by Israelis that go undocumented in the American press. Israel's supporters

Did Libya Really Destroy Pan Am 103? Or Is There a Cover-Up?
By Andrew I. Killgore

The destruction of Pan Am Airways Flight 103 was designed to be “The Perfect Crime.” Bearing 269 passengers and a hidden explosive device, the Boeing 747 would pull away from London’s Heathrow Airport on Dec. 21, 1988, gradually tend north and west on its usual great circle route as the shortest distance between London and New York. The flight could be expected to be well out over the Atlantic within 35 minutes.

The fates, however, decreed no. Gale-force winds vexed the skies over London that day and the pilot, looking to get “above the tempests,” guided the ill-starred “Maid of the Seas” more northward. Thus, 38 minutes after takeoff, the plane was over Lockerbie, Scotland when it exploded, killing all 269 passengers, most of them Americans, and 11 persons on the ground.

The turmoil in the skies over Britain that day has reverberated ever since in confusing and contradictory developments relating to the tragedy. It is as if the conspirators, terrified that evidence on the ground in Scotland eventually would point to them, have been able to manipulate such a level of misinformation and misdirection that the truth forever would be concealed.

Dr. Robert Black, professor of criminal law at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, and mastermind of the unique judicial arrangement for trying the two Libyan defendants under Scottish law in the Netherlands, has told the Washington Report that the investigatory evidence brought to his attention during the first two and a half years after the Lockerbie crash had not pointed to Libya at all. Rather, the focus of suspicion seemed to be Ahmad Jibril’s Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC).

Dr. Black had favored, before too much time had passed, some kind of trial to achieve closure. In 1991, however, pressure to concentrate the investigation on Libya became so intense that, Black believes, only the governments of the U.S. and Britain could have been behind it.

What exactly is the Libya connection? The answer to that question may lead to the real beginning of the Lockerbie disaster.

In February 1986, according to former Mossad case officer Victor Ostrovsky in his book The Other Side of Deception—one of two revealing books he has written since leaving Mossad—Israel planted a communications device called “the Trojan” in the top floor of an apartment house in Tripoli, Libya. The device could receive messages broadcast by Mossad, Israel’s foreign intelligence service, on one frequency and automatically relay them on a different frequency used by the Libyan government.

Evidence during the first years after the crash had not pointed to Libya at all.

The Trojan soon seemed to be broadcasting a series of terrorist orders to various Libyan embassies. Spanish and French intelligence picked up the broadcasts and concluded they were fake. The United States, encouraged by its “ally,” Israel—
which knew the broadcasts were Mossad disinformation—concluded that they were genuine.

Only a few weeks after the Trojan broadcasts began, the La Belle Discothèque in West Berlin was bombed, killing two American soldiers and a Turkish woman. Assuming that Libya had bombed La Belle, a club frequented by U.S. soldiers, President Ronald Reagan sent planes from England and from U.S. aircraft carriers in the Mediterranean to bomb the Libyan cities of Tripoli and Benghazi. More than 100 Libyans were killed, including Col. Muammar al-Qaddafi’s adopted young daughter.

In describing the Israeli deception that eventually led to the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, Ostrovsky is careful not to point to Israel as the real perpetrator of the La Belle bombing. But his sequence of events—the planting of Trojan in Tripoli, its fake “Libyan” terrorist broadcasts, followed by the bombing of the La Belle nightclub known to be frequented by American soldiers—means that one cannot dismiss the possibility that Israeli agents may have bombed La Belle. Israel’s always fixed motive of making bad blood between the U.S. and the Arab and Muslim worlds—and its history of setting up Libya, going back to the nonexistent “hit squads”—certainly would have been well served.

Climaxing the “Libya did it” scenarios was the Jan. 31, 2001 conviction by a Scottish tribunal at Camp Zeist, an old American military base near Amsterdam, the Netherlands, of Abdel Basset Ali Mohammad Megrahi, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for destroying Pan Am Flight 103. In an unusual and puzzling decision, Megrahi’s co-defendant, Lamen Khalifa Fhimah, was acquitted. The decision satisfied no one, particularly as the three judges’ unanimous 75-page opinion all but demanded a “not proven” rather than the “guilty” verdict.

ANTHRAX AS METAPHOR IS THE CHIEF SUSPECT IN THE ANTHRAX CASE IMMUNE FROM PROSECUTION – AND WHAT DOES THAT SAY ABOUT JUSTICE IN AMERICA?

What do we need an "Office of Strategic Influence" for when we have the Wall Street Journal? Not to mention the rest of the American media, which just can't be as gullible as they seem to be. The latest anthrax stories – Al Qaeda was mixing huge vats of the stuff in the Afghan hinterlands, the hijackers sent it just before they clocked out, it's all an Iraqi plot – are such a compilation of cow-dung and other varieties of excrement that one imagines them writing this junk while holding their noses. Naturally, the War Street Journal is the absolute worst, building an editorial out of all these dubious elements and then standing, unsteadily, on the pinnacle of the rickety mess to proclaim:

"The evidence of Saddam's repeated efforts to acquire biological and chemical weapons is overwhelming, so it's hardly a leap to imagine that he might have shared that expertise with his like-minded friends in al Qaeda. The famous meeting in Prague between Mohammed Atta and an Iraqi agent is unlikely to be the sole connection between al Qaeda and Saddam.”

LYING AS A SPORT

That's a leap of Olympic athleticism, one likely to set a world record. There is not a scintilla of evidence that the "famous" meeting in Prague ever happened, as Bob Novak points out. Yet this urban myth – which seems restricted to certain pundits, who repeat it endlessly and then quote each other – persists, in spite of the flimsiness of the evidence. And of course an "effort to acquire biological and chemical weapons" is not the same as a successful effort to do so.

TEARS FOR ANDALUSIA

As for the alleged like-mindedness of Saddam and Osama: the savagery of the former is secular, while the latter's is almost purely theo-pathological. Their actions are equally monstrous, but like-minded is precisely what these two monsters are not. Failure to understand this is to confess complete ignorance of the war bin Laden is waging. 9/11 was a declaration of religious war, or jihad, against the West. To the bin Ladenite – still smarting over the loss of Andalusia – the enemy is modernity.
Seen from bin Laden's theological perspective, the Ba'athist form of secular socialism espoused by Saddam and his clan – that owes more to Marxism than Mohammedanism – is as much to be despised by the radical Islamist as anything produced in the West. Indeed, by these lights, Saddam could be configured as even more of a threat, since Ba'athism and fundamentalism are competing for the same constituency: the Arab "street."

AN ALTERNATE HISTORY

As Peter Bergen points out in his excellent book, Holy War, Inc., the catalyst of bin Laden's jihad against the US was the profanation of the holy territory of Saudi Arabia by the presence of American "infidels," unbelievers whose physical proximity to the sacred cities of Mecca and Medina was impermissible. To forestall that, bin Laden offered to defend the Kingdom against Saddam after the invasion of Kuwait – on the condition that the Americans were to stay out.

The offer was not accepted – a bad move on Riyadh's part. For just imagine if the Saudis had set their mad dog renegades on Saddam: instead of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, all 30 or so of Saddam's palaces might have been reduced to rubble in very short order and we would not now be awaiting the first shots of Gulf War II.

A SLOPPY CONSPIRACY THEORY

The meandering conspiracy theory proffered by the Journal is pure fiction, from beginning to end. There is no evidence of anthrax production in Afghanistan. USA Today reports that some components of a production system were found, but essential elements were missing:

"The laboratory was apparently under construction and did not have all the equipment necessary to produce anthrax. Also, no trace of any biological agent was found, nor did troops find chemicals necessary to 'weaponize' anthrax.

"In five other locations in Afghanistan, tests have discovered traces of anthrax and another biotoxin, ricin, Myers said. But the anthrax traces were so small that they could have been residue of naturally occurring anthrax carried by diseased animals. The faint traces of ricin could have been residue from stores of castor beans, from which the toxin is extracted."

BACKLASH

The [UK] Observer quotes a Pentagon official denying the whole thing:

"A Pentagon official told The Observer there was no intelligence to support claims from London that al-Qaeda was developing biological weapons in the Shah-e-Kot area. 'I don't know what they're saying in London but we have received no specific intelligence on that kind of development or capability in the Shah-e-Kot valley region – I mean a chemical or biological weapons facility,' said an official in the Army department

Hundreds of Muslim Immigrants Rounded Up in Calif.
By Jill Serjeant
Dec 18, 2002 8:47 PM ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hundreds of Iranian and other Middle East citizens
were in southern California jails on Wednesday after coming forward to
comply with a new rule to register with immigration authorities only to
wind up handcuffed and behind bars.

Shocked and frustrated Islamic and immigrant groups estimate that more
than 500 people have been arrested in Los Angeles, neighboring Orange
County and San Diego in the past three days under a new nationwide
anti-terrorism program. Some unconfirmed reports put the figure as high as
1,000.

The arrests sparked a demonstration by hundreds of Iranians outside a Los
Angeles immigration office. The protesters carried banners saying "What's
next? Concentration camps?" and "What happened to liberty and justice?."

A spokesman for the Immigration and Naturalization Service said no numbers
of people arrested would be made public. A Justice Department spokesman
could not be reached for comment.

The head of the southern California chapter of the American Civil
Liberties Union compared the arrests to the internment of Japanese
Americans in camps during the Second World War.

"I think it is shocking what is happening. It is reminiscent of what
happened in the past with the internment of Japanese Americans. We are
getting a lot of telephone calls from people. We are hearing that people
went down wanting to cooperate and then they were detained," said Ramona
Ripston, the ACLU's executive director.

JAILS OVERFLOWING

One activist said local jails were so overcrowded that the immigrants
could be sent to Arizona, where they could face weeks or months in prisons
awaiting hearings before immigration judges or deportation.

"It is a shock. You don't expect this to happen. It is really putting
fright and apprehension in the community. People who come from these
countries -- this is what they expect from their government. Not from
America," said Sabiha Khan of the Southern California chapter of the
Council on American Islamic Relations.

The arrests were part of a post Sept. 11 program that requires all males
over 16 from a list of 20 Arab or Middle East countries, who do not have
permanent resident status in the United States, to register with U.S.
immigration authorities.

Monday was the deadline for men from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya and Sudan.
News of the mass arrests came first in southern California, which is home
to more than 600,000 Iranian exiles and their families.

Officials declined to give figures for those arrested or for the numbers
of people who turned up to register, be fingerprinted and have their
photographs taken.

"We are not releasing any numbers," said Immigration and Naturalization
Service (INS) spokesman Francisco Arcaute.

CALLS FOR HELP

Islamic groups and the local chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union
(ACLU) said they had been swamped with calls for help.

INS spokesman Arcaute said those arrested had violated immigration laws,
overstayed their visas, or were wanted for crimes. The program was
prompted by concern about the lack of records on tourists, students and
other visitors to the United States after the Sept. 11 hijack plane
attacks on New York and Washington.

Islamic community leaders said many of the detainees had been living,
working and paying taxes in the United States for five or 10 years, and
had families here.

"Terrorists most likely wouldn't come to the INS to register. It is really
a bad way to go about it. They are being treated as criminals and that
really goes against American ideals of fairness, and justice and
democracy," Khan said.

The Iranian protesters said many of those detained were victims of
official delays in processing visa and green card requests.

"My father, they just took him in," one young man told reporters. "They've
been treating him like an animal. They put him in a room with, like, 50
other people and no bed or anything."

Khan said one of those in jail was a doctor, who was being sponsored for
U.S. citizenship when his sponsor died.

One Syrian man said he went to register in Orange County with a dozen
friends. He was the only one to come out of the INS office. "All my
friends are inside right now," M.M. Trapici, 45, told reporters. "I have
to visit the family for each one today. Most of them have small kids."

Guilty until proven innocent: the new American way

By John Kaminski
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Guilty until proven innocent. This is the new American way. And no evidence
is necessary to order someone killed. Just the say-so of the man with the
gun.

Everything Americans have worked for over the past 227 years, to establish
the rule of law over the emotions of the mob and the predations of the
aristocracy, has been nullified by fake terror, insincere legislators and
endless bribery.

Vigilante justice is the new order of the day in this frightening 2003
edition of the United States of America. Due process, the right to a fair
trial, the right to be safe and secure in one's home — these are all things
of the past, things we used to defend as the best traits of American freedom
in those happy days before the self-inflicted War on Terror. (* - see note
below).

Now we are defending the right of the president to order people killed
because he says they are bad guys. He doesn't need any evidence because he's
the president, according to Ari Fleischer, his sycophantic press secretary.
This is what we are presenting to our children as the actions of a
democracy.

As the reptilian politician Henry Hyde said recently, the Constitution is
just not relevant anymore. What he means is people don't have rights
anymore. What seems to be the surest guarantee toward success in America
these days is a criminal conviction incurred while participating in the
wholesale fleecing of the American population. As in the cases of John
Poindexter, Eliot Abrams and Ollie North (both George Bushes could also be
in this category were the judiciary more honest), guilty verdicts in service
to the hidden hand of the power elite are a sure way to find full employment
in this era of runaway corruption.

Guilty until proven innocent. Look at poor pathetic Saddam. Nothing he says
counts, ever since he had that conversation with U.S. ambassador April
Glaspie, who told him the U.S. wouldn't really mind if he invaded Kuwait. So
because he had a legimate grievance — slant drilling/theft of oil by the
Sabah family — he did invade. And what a penalty! A half million Iraqis dead
(mostly children) and 13 years later, the U.S. is still bombing him. What
did he do against the United States? Nothing. He was our ally. But we set
him up. All other U.S. "allies" should be taking note of this behavior, but
I doubt that they are. Just like in our country, the leaders of those
countries who took large amounts of money to be our allies are too busy
concealing their blood money to be genuinely interested in the fate of their
own people. Just ask Hosni Mubarak, or Prince Whatshisname? That Saudi
sultan who mostly hangs out in Monte Carlo and insists he's a devout Muslim.
Just like the supposed hijackers were devout Muslims. And speaking of the
hijackers, they are definitely guilty until proven innocent. I heard it on
CNN, and also from Tony Blair.

And even if we didn't get their names right, they're still guilty until
proven innocent, no matter who they are or what names they use. It's them
and they're guilty. Just ask your president.

Guilty until proven innocent. Osama bin Laden. Does he really exist? Are any
of his tapes legit? And if he does exist, isn't he a CIA operative? He used
to be, when he first started getting financial assistance from Washington.
This is why the feds blocked John O'Neill's investigation. He was about to
find out that bin Laden was working for the CIA, and that those embassy hits
in Africa were done by the Mossad, not by Islamic Jihad (although there is
some debate about the actual difference between the two). But we had solid
evidence against bin Laden, Blair said so. He just wouldn't tell us what it
was. And that's why 5,000 Afghanis had to die, even though there never
really was any intention to catch bin Laden (if he really exists). But those
Afghanis were guilty because they couldn't prove their innocence — they
couldn't prove they didn't facilitate the destruction of two skyscrapers in
New York — and that's why they had to die, in a hail of anonymous bunker
busters from 30,000 feet.

Guilty until proven innocent. Timothy McVeigh! Remember him. He supposedly
parked a truck bomb in front of a big building. This bomb supposedly blew
down this big building, killed a lot of mothers and babies, but amazingly
failed to knock down a sapling right next to the truck. The Air Force
general who said that building came down as a result of many major
explosives attached to stanchions inside the building was never listened to.
An Oklahoma City cop who was gathering information mysteriously committed
suicide. A federal agent who had all sorts of testimony about Iraqis in the
neighborhood was told to shut up and drummed out of the BATF.

And McVeigh — remember him? He

[CTRL] 11th Annual International UFO Congress

2002-12-19 Thread Dale Stonehouse

http://www.ufocongress.com

Report on the 11th Annual International UFO Congress Convention and Film
Festival
By Donald M. Ware, 662 Fairway Ave., Ft. Walton Beach, FL 32547

Our 11th winter convention March 3-9, 2002 in Laughlin, Nevada was a
wonderful learning experience with many dear friends. Unexpectedly, the
hotel raised prices drastically, which coupled with the events of 9-11,
caused a lower attendance from the record of last year. Next year we meet at
the Flamingo Laughlin Hotel, February 2-8, where the packages, including the
entire conference and hotel room for eight nights, will start at just
$380.00. We are very excited about the new facility, as it is a new, smoke
free convention center, and we can seat up to 1200.

We had 30 speakers from five countries this year, and a record 17 films
competing for EBE awards. Each morning Dolores Cannon hosted small
gatherings for experiencers. Again the food and drinks provided at the
Wednesday meet-the-speakers party were sufficient for dinner, door prizes
generously donated by the exhibitors were awarded, and for those with the
energy, the dancing lasted until the wee hours. I suspect we each made some
new friends. Bob, Teri, the A/V crew, and the River Palms Resort staff
superbly presented the Saturday night banquet and EBE awards.

Dolores Cannon spoke Sunday evening after we viewed five films in the
afternoon. She described herself as a retired Navy wife, and she has become
a very popular regressionist and psychic researcher. Her topic was "The
Convoluted Universe", which is the title of her latest book. She uses a
level of hypnotic trance that bypasses the conscious mind get to the
sub-conscious. She said, "Strange things happen there." The information she
receives gets heavily into metaphysics. She said, "Time is an illusion.
Everything happens at the same time." She referred to the TV shows "Sliders"
and "Stargate". She said we have to get rid of the violence before we can
join the others out there. She is not allowed to lecture on some information
she is given, because it is too dangerous. She talked about "Indigo
Children" or what she calls Star Children. "Scientists say their DNA is
different." She spoke at a conference in Minnesota just for Star Children.
Some are designated ADD and drugged. Teachers need to be educated about
them. "Their genes are being manipulated to fit into the new world we are
entering." Concerning accusations about "playing God" she said, "If you
create a new body, it won't live if the soul does not want to transfer." She
mentioned a past civilization that had life destroyed by an ozone hole. She
said, "Our government is genetically changing." (I wish I had asked about
that in the Q&A.) She closed with, "I think aliens are closer to God than we
are."

Paul LaViolette, Ph.D., our first speaker Monday, has a Physics degree from
John Hopkins and a Ph.D. in system theory from Portland State. He is
president of the Starburst Foundation. His talk borrowed the name of his
fourth book, The Talk of the Galaxy: An ET Message For Us. He built a
credible case showing that the ordered signals of pulsars are non-randomly
distributed in the sky, and they purposefully mark key galactic locations.
These repetitive pulses were first discovered in 1967, and they seem to
transmit on all frequencies. The first one named was LGM 1 for "little green
men." He thinks x-ray stars are used as energy sources for the synchrotron
radiation beams. The fastest pulse, about 1 millisecond, is in the optical
range. He found that peaks of Beryllium 10 produced in the atmosphere by
cosmic rays are tied in with ice age endings. Floods resulting from rapid
heating have buried many ancient animals in mud deposits. The second fastest
is near the tip of the Sagittarius arrow. He thinks aliens long ago taught
us their lore through the zodiac.

Next William Donato revisited Edgar Casey's Caribbean Atlantis. He received
an MA in Anthropology from California State University Fullerton, and his
Masters thesis was on, "A Re-examination of the Atlantis Theory." He is also
founder and editor of The Atlantis Organization. He said that prior to
melting of the glaciers, the Bahamas had tens of thousands of square miles
of land. He dated the peak of the Atlantis civilization at 10,490-10590 BC.
He thinks the Atlantean dynasty was started by human/alien hybrids. He
showed five trays of slides, mostly of stones above and below the water.
Some looked like ancient ruins. One 200 lb marble block had carving on it.
He showed round holes in blocks in "the Bimini Road." One rectangular area
of stone measured ¼ by ½ mile.

Terry Hansen has an MA in science journalism, and he has a special interest
in scientific controversies and the "politics of knowledge." He said that
somewhere between local news outlets and national news media, UFO stories
either vanish altogether or become grossly distorted. The same censorship
and propaganda methods deployed during wars an

Smallpox Vaccinations Versus Nature?s Most Powerful Preventative

by

Leonard G. Horowitz, D.M.D., M.A., M.P.H.

People who put their faith and trust in the Bush
administration?s smallpox vaccination program are foolish, if
not suicidal. How so?

The potion is a 1950s brew of chemically treated, freeze dried,
cow pus with mercury. It has been diluted five times from its
original questionably effective, admittedly toxic, concentrate.
You?d have to be extremely gullible to believe this
ancient ?immunization,? developed by a proven charlatan, would
deliver physical salvation from modern strains of smallpox
(i.e., variola) that have been significantly modified
(i.e., ?hyperweaponized?) by the world?s leading doctors of
death working for the ?Axis of Evil.?

It was bad enough that scientific consensus voted on June 18,
2002, to restrict smallpox vaccinations to less than
15,000 ?first responders.? Two days later, spin doctors, without
any rational explanation, upped the target to 500,000. Another
500,000 military personnel were then added to help engage 280
million Americans expected to be quarantined with forced
vaccinations at the first declaration of ?outbreak.?

Meanwhile, myriad overlooked details about the history of
smallpox vaccination programs, from Jenner?s time to the
present, smacks of an ongoing deadly deception.

The Bush administration?s rapidly evolving World War III?a ?holy
war? against ?terrorism??has cast frightened and confused
Americans into a microbial abyss. ?White collar terrorists,?
working for pharmaceutical industrialists wedded with the White
House, have manipulated the media for manufactured madness.
Evidence proves the current smallpox scam was being planned as
early as 1999, possibly 1996. (See: Congressional testimony by
Bioport?s Robert C. Myers, III at
http://www.tetrahedron.org/articles/anthrax/anthrax_espionage.htm
l)

History repeats when you don?t learn it. How ironic. America is,
supposedly, the greatest ?superpower? the world has ever seen.
Yet, today, our lethal nemesis is the same as it was in 1776
when ?the King of Terrors in America? was the smallpox virus. It
was never determined whether British or American operators
loosed the agent during General Washington?s siege of Quebec
City. In either case, the germ, forced the American Army to
retreat that year. Later, the successful Anglo-American genocide
that decimated the native populations of North America was
determined due to smallpox infected bed bugs presented in Army
blankets given as ?gifts? to displaced Indians.

As we sow, we reap. This biological irony is best exemplified
by the Rockefeller-linked American Type Culture Collection and
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shipments of
biological weapons, including anthrax and the West Nile Virus,
to Iraq during the George H.W. Bush years. Thus, if Saddam
Hussein currently has smallpox, as officials contend, it almost
certainly came from the Bush family?s own benefactors and
special interest groups that are poised to make a bloody fortune
from the smallpox fright and impending ?outbreak.?

The Common Sense Solution

The most lethal biological weapon, Ebola, kills nine-out-of-ten
people within three weeks of infection. Ten percent survive
because of the strength of their immune systems, or what
microbiologists call ?host resistance.? Science proves immuno-
competence is more powerful than anything else, including the
number of germs, such as smallpox, that invade your body, and/or
the virulence or strength of each strain.

Mostly, what determines immunity and longevity is your
spirituality, connection to the Divine, and actualization of
love. Don?t believe it? Want proof? Okay, consider this. Most
physicians argue it?s all about genes. Many say immunity stems
from diet and exercise. Others promote good hygiene. Advanced
thinkers include all of the above, but here?s the rub. Numerous
studies of the elderly (i.e., geriatric populations) show that
the most common cause of disease and death is none of the above.
It is the loss of a spouse. People die most readily of broken
hearts. In these most numerous cases, genetics, purity of diet,
exercise levels, and good hygiene, are less powerful than the
longing to care and share with another person, intimately, in a
meaningful way. Love is the fabric that binds two people, and
civilization as a whole, together. It is the Divine spiritual
expression that protects, restores, and uplifts human life, if
not everything in the universe.

You might be inclined to disagree, saying, ?But this is
smallpox!? Certainly, the majority of people in the world are
disinclin

-Caveat Lector-

Investors need to know Economic History.

THE POST-WAR PERIOD
by Raymond DeVoe, Jr.

I have been keeping a list of the stupidest things said on CNBC. The list
is lengthening. But the one that gets into my mind the way those "Golden
Oldies" do are the comments that start with something like: "In the postwar
period, the economy (or stock market) has always (or almost always...)"
...and then they go into what either always, or almost always, was done in
the period since 1945.

To fill in some of the blanks following those "postwar period" lead-ins:
"[The economy]...responded to Federal Reserve interest rate cuts and was
recovering 6-9 months later"; "[The market] anticipated the recovery and
was substantially higher when the economy bottomed"; "[The stock market]
was X% higher on average six months after the economy turned Y% higher a
year into recovery)"; "bear markets average about 11 months, so we should
be..." etc.

My reaction to this is the same as when the people on TV state something
like, "The stock market has been higher 65% of the time on the Friday
following Thanksgiving, so there is a 2-to-1 probability that it will rise
on November 29, 2002." This goes into my "Rule (or, Misrule) of History",
which goes, "If the stock market regularly repeated past patterns, the
richest people on Wall Street would be librarians and historians - and
that's just not true."

My reaction to those "postwar period"-citing analysts and strategists is:
what is so special about the postwar period? Why should the period since
World War II ended in 1945 mean that everything will follow those economic
and stock market patterns?? How do they summarily dismiss everything that
happened prior to 1945??? Could it be that what is going on now is quite
different from "postwar period" conditions, that it really is different
now" For the latter - think theme music from "The Twilight Zone" - all
is not what it appears to be. Recently, I did an interview for the December
issue of a financial magazine profiling "The 30 Smartest Investors on Wall
Street." I don't know how they got my name, since I have done very little
personal investing - and my attempts at bottom-fishing have not been
particularly successful. I asked who the other 29 were - I couldn't imagine
that many brilliant people this year, since "Genius is a strong bull
market", and the opposite is true of a bear market. The interviewer
wouldn't name the others. Since the article was for the December issue, I
told her that the Annual Wall Street Christmas Pageant had already been
cancelled - they couldn't find three wise men, or a virgin.

I was asked who the smartest person was I had met in the investment world.
That was easy: my professor and guidance counselor at Columbia Business
School, Prof. David Dodd of Graham and Dodd's Security Analysis. Then she
asked what I thought was the best book about investing, and why. I thought
about it, and answered the question somewhat differently - if there was one
book that every novice investor should read, my nomination would be Manias,
Panics, and Crashes - A History of Financial Crises by Charles P.
Kindleberger.

Why? Behind my reason was the fact that before you can drive a car or fly a
plane, you have to have a certain amount of training with an experienced
instructor. Then you have to take an examination and a test drive or
flight, where you can fail, before you get your driver's or pilot's
license. For the latter, you also have to keep up with continuing
education. To qualify for night, instrument, or non-visual flying, you have
to take additional instruction.

Yet neophyte investors, some unable to articulate the difference between a
stock and a bond, are allowed to "pilot" their life savings and/or intended
retirement portfolios without any form of instruction or training. All they
have to do is open a brokerage or mutual fund account and give some
(frequently confused) indications about their financial resources and
investment objectives. Since this neophyte investing is almost always
started in favorable weather, a bull market, they are totally unprepared
for what might happen when a storm arrives.

Worse, they have been conditioned (brainwashed?) into believing the mantras
of "buy on the dips", "hold for the longer term", and that "there is no
long-term risk in stocks, only short-term volatility".

Mr. Kindleberger's book may not prevent people from making financial fools
of themselves, or losing a lot of money. But it will give a new investor a
warning and a sense of history. Manias are nothing new and have occurred
regularly. However, the one that popped on March 10, 2000 (Nasdaq Composite
5048), others that may be hing now, and the housing bubble to deflate
some time in the future, in combination, may constitute the largest
financial mania in history. A new investor reading Manias, Panics, and
Crashes would be alerted to the fact that no mania goes on forever - that
some have panics, some have cr

Smallpox Gunmen Deputized to Secure Vaccination Areas:
Resistance Mounts to FEMA?s Involvement in ?Public Health? Plan

Sandpoint, ID ?Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
officials are directing police chiefs nationwide to search local
gun owner records to identify and train civilian deputies to
secure smallpox vaccination sites. According to documents
forwarded to civil rights groups by police chiefs engaged in a
growing smallpox vaccination resistance movement, the plan calls
for armed civilian security guards to maintain the peace in
every room the vaccine will be given.

The FEMA directive is aimed to prevent violence at
smallpox ?vaccination areas.? It also effectively removes law
enforcement officials who oppose vaccination. ?Police chiefs are
now being pressured to comply, get vaccinated, then promote the
smallpox vaccine,? said one chief who requested anonymity. ?They
expect us to follow the 500,000 military personnel that began to
receive the vaccine this week.?

The general public may be required to take the vaccine
immediately following the first reported case of smallpox, and
after 10 million healthcare workers and emergency responders are
vaccinated and positioned to run the mammoth civilian program.

FEMA officials were unavailable for comment regarding their
involvement in ordering one armed civilian ?security staff? to
defend every two ?vaccinators,? including one ?preferred?
registered nurse. These civilian volunteers are expected to
administer thousands of vaccines per day.

?Authorities will claim this availability of lethal force is
meant to reduce risks and protect volunteers,? said Ingri
Cassel, the director of Vaccination Liberation, a nationwide
association that has established dozens of local chapters to
defend the legal right to abstain from vaccinations. ?We are
seeing increasingly coercive policies, allegedly for ?public
health? and ?national security,? that dangerously restrict civil
rights and religious freedoms.?

Clinical trials on the largely unproven smallpox vaccine are
ongoing at Baylor University and three other sites. ?That proves
the experimental nature of this entire program,? said Dr.
Leonard Horowitz, a public health authority and bioterrorism
expert who helped establish a public information website all
about smallpox. (http://www.allaboutsmallpox.com)

Many medical and public health officials have serious doubts
about the expected benefits versus known health risks of this
hurried plan. A scientific consensus voted against this plan
last summer, Dr. Horowitz explained, referring to a series of
governmental hearings that concluded in June. ?Forcing military
and emergency personnel to receive a fifty-year-old mixture of
cow pus, mercury, and fetal calf serum, to adequately protect
against modern strains of smallpox, including those weaponized
for mass destruction, grossly violates common sense and medical
ethics.?

?I?ve been vindicated,? said Jack McLamb, a retired military and
police officer, and publisher of AID & Abet, a police and
military periodical. Officer McLamb has been persecuted for
years for openly criticizing the government while predicting
that law officers would be used to enforce coercive public
health policies that attack civil liberties and undermine
religious freedoms. ?My detractors laughed when I said, ?Tyranny
can not come to the home of any American unless it comes in
uniform.? Now no one is laughing anymore.?

-end ?

US filmmaker Spielberg to donate $1m to Israeli 'victims' of intifada
Friday, December 13, 2002

US film director Steven Spielberg is to donate one million dollars from his Holocaust
Foundation to five organisations which help Israeli victims of Palestinian attacks, a
newspaper reported Thursday.

Spielberg, who set up the Frankfurt-based foundation from the profits of his 1994
Oscar-
winning film Schindler's List, said he was donating the money because of the ongoing
violence.

"I understood that it isn't about to end," he told Maariv newspaper. "I have
understood that
the tragic reality existing today in Israel is almost permanent and there is no chance
it will
change in the near future."

The money is to go to five different organisations whose main aim is to counsel and
help
the victims of Palestinian attacks and their families.

Some funding will also be used to provide scholarships at the Hebrew University of
Jerusalem that will be named after the nine people, including five Americans, killed
in a
Palestinian bombing in the university's cafeteria on July 31, Maariv said.

Spielberg, who was due to make an official announcement later Thursday, wanted the
news to be published first in Israel.

A total of 2,760 people, of whom 2,032 were Palestinians and 678 Israelis, have been
killed
since the intifada, or uprising against Israeli occupation, broke out in September
2000,
according to an AFP toll

British suppliers 'named in Iraqi dossier'
By Hugh Williamson in Berlin, Stephen Fidler in London and Peter Spiegel in Washington
Published: December 18 2002 19:27 | Last Updated: December 18 2002 19:27

Seventeen British companies are named in Iraq's 12,000-page declaration to the United
Nations as having helped Baghdad's weapons programmes, a German newspaper reports
on Thursday.

According to the Berlin-based Die Tageszeitung, which says it has a copy of parts of
the
dossier, the companies are among 150 from around the world used by Iraq to develop
missiles or nuclear, biological and chemical weapons.

But the dossier states that the British companies' activities in Iraq all took place
before
Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990, according to the newspaper. The 17 names cited by
the
newspaper have each previously been publicly identified as suppliers to the programmes
in
the late 1980s and in 1990.

Die Tageszeitung has previously reported that the dossier shows some German companies
have co-operated with Iraq more recently. It will report today on what the dossier says
about companies based in all five permanent members of the UN Security Council, with
evidence it says the dossier shows of heavy recent involvement by Russian
weapons-related
companies in Iraq.

The British list includes at least six companies identified by the US Treasury as
Iraqi front
companies, including Matrix-Churchill and Endshire Export Marketing.

The British foreign office on Thursday would not comment on the disclosures. But the UK
government has supported moves in the UN to remove company names from the copies of
the dossier to be distributed to non-permanent members of the security council.

UN officials have argued this week that removing the names would facilitate future co-
operation on Iraq with the companies involved.

The 24 US companies named include Hewlett Packard, Honeywell and Rockwell, while the
10 French companies include Thomson-CSF military and Protec.

Gary Milhollin, director of the Washington-based Wisconsin Project, which keeps a
database
on companies that did business with Iraq, said that if the German report was accurate,
the
declaration about US companies appeared to contain information already known by the
west.

"All these names are familiar," Mr Milhollin said. "From the Iraqi point of view, if
they list a
supplier, they have to list what the supplier sold, and they're not going to reveal
that if it's
something they don't want the US to know about."

The name of the game is assassination
The Pentagon has learned from Israel's policy of 'targeted killings'
Tony Geraghty and David Leigh
Wednesday December 18 2002
The Guardian

Israeli hardliners had the pleasure this week of seeing their controversial tactic of
"targeted killing" of their enemies vindicated by being imitated. For it has emerged
that their close allies in the US administration have now drawn up a target list for a
systematic policy of assassination against those they call terrorists.

Considering the closeness of the Israeli right and the hawks at the Pentagon, this
development should come as no surprise. The US has borrowed not just their policy, but
their techniques too. It was Israel that pioneered the use of the Hellfire missile for
summary executions such as the US carried out last month in Yemen.

Developed as a tankbuster during the cold war, Hellfire hits its target at 950mph. On
November 3, a Landcruiser with an alleged al-Qaida leader and five other men was
stalked from the air by a pilotless Predator controlled by a US team in Djibouti, 150
miles away. The Hellfire it carried enabled them to kill their prey from the comfort
of an office chair.

A decade earlier, another terrorist, Sheik Abbas Moussawi, leader of Lebanon's
fundamentalist Hizbollah group, was stalked from the air in this way. On February 16
1992, he was vaporised by an Israeli helicopter armed with Hellfire.

In biblical times, David made do with just one missile to cut down Goliath. But since
Moussawi's Mercedes was in a guarded convoy, he got five. His wife Siham and their son
Hussein, aged five, were killed with him.

Israel's defence minister, Moshe Arens, rejoiced over "a message to all terrorist
organisations... whoever opens an account with us, we will close the account with
them".

Three years later, Israel assassinated another Hizbollah leader, Rida Yassin, in a
similar way as he drove along a road east of Tyre. Two Cobra helicopter gunships fired
the radar-guided missiles, again believed to be Hellfires. One reportedly exploded
inside the vehicle, burning Yassin and an aide alive. The other set fire to trees and
bushes, hindering rescue workers.

The US's recent technical contribution has been to marry Israel's novel use of
Hellfire with unmanned drones. The Predator was conceived in 1994 as a spy plane,
operated from a safe position by a member of the "joystick generation" - and three
others managing cameras and communications.

Airforce chiefs then transformed it into a tankbuster. The first successful test was
in Nevada on February 21 2001. Air combat command moved on to try satellite links
against the harder challenge of a moving target.

Al-Qaida's attack on the twin towers soon afterwards dramatically changed it targets
- to "take out" not tanks, but individuals.

In this, it seems clear the Pentagon drank at the well of Israel's experience as a
"laboratory for fighting terror". This May, Douglas Feith, the Pentagon's hawkish
undersecretary for policy, went to Tel Aviv to talk to Ariel Sharon and his defence
minister, Binyamin Ben Eliezer. The Israeli paper Ha'aretz said they discussed "war
games, intelligence sharing and other cooperation".

Feith is such an enthusiast for the Israeli right that the reactionary Zionist
Organisation of America describes him approvingly as "the noted pro-Israel activist".

Four weeks later, Israel's top two security chiefs went to Washington to propose a new
US-Israeli office specifically to combat terrorism. Brigadier General David Tzur and
Uzi Landau, minister of interior security, met Feith on June 27.

The joint office, to be based in Washington, would involve a communications link
between the proposed US department of homeland defence and the Israeli government, it
was explained. Visa policies, terrorist profiles and other internal security data -
except classified intelligence - would be swapped by computer, fax and telephone. The
topic of the US-Israeli meeting was confirmed as "homeland security". Mr Landau said:
"Israel is a laboratory for fighting terror."

It was only a matter of days after those talks that defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld
drafted a secret directive. It is reported he ordered Air force General Charles
Holland on July 22 "to develop a plan to find and deal with members of terrorist
organisations".

"The objective is to capture terrorists for interrogation or if necessary to kill
them, not simply to arrest them in a law-enforcement exercise," he wrote.

Following the Yemen attack - what the Pentagon apparently hopes was the first of many
successful operations - the third of the Pentagon's trio of hawks, deputy secretary
Paul Wolfowitz, told CNN the killing was regarded as "a very success

War on Terror Walkouts
Oakland, Flagstaff City Councils to Vote on Opposition to Patriot Act Provisions

By Dean Schabner

Dec. 17 — Two more cities could join 18 other municipalities around the country that
have
questioned whether the USA Patriot Act combats terror at the expense of Americans'
constitutional rights.

The city council of Oakland, Calif., is scheduled to vote today on a resolution that
would
order city employees not to cooperate with federal investigations that are felt to
violate civil
liberties.

The city of Flagstaff, Ariz., also has a vote scheduled on a less harshly worded
resolution
that would be a statement by the city that it is concerned about potential violations
of civil
rights as a result of implementation of the USA Patriot Act, but stopping short of
withdrawing the city's cooperation.

If both resolutions pass, the two cities would become the 19th and 20th local
governments
to formalize their opposition to provisions of the USA Patriot Act.

Supporters of the Oakland resolution, which include nearly two dozen organizations, say
they expect the measure to pass.

"I think there is strong support," City Councilwoman Nancy Nadel said. "We can't trade
our
civil liberties for security and still be fighting for the freedoms our country
symbolizes."

The Oakland draft resolution says in part that "to the extent legally possible, no City
employee or department shall officially assist or voluntarily cooperate with
investigations,
interrogations, or arrest procedures, public or clandestine, that are in violation of
individuals' civil rights or civil liberties as specified in the above Amendments of
the United
States Constitution."

It also says that "the City of Oakland affirms its strong opposition to terrorism, but
also
affirms that any efforts to end terrorism not be waged at the expense of the
fundamental
civil rights and liberties of the people of Oakland, the United States and the World."

The resolution originally put before the Flagstaff City Council was written in terms
similar to
the Oakland measure, but there has since been compromise to remove references to the
police department and soften the criticism of the federal government, Flagstaff Mayor
Joe
Donaldson said.

"We wanted it to be a citizens' reminder to the government that we're concerned about
terror acts and at the same time we're concerned about civil liberties," Donaldson
said.

Other Cities Considering Patriot Measures

Similar resolutions have already passed in 18 other communities, including Berkeley,
Santa
Cruz and Sebastopol, Calif.; Denver and Boulder, Colo.; four cities in Massachusetts;
Ann
Arbor, Mich.; Santa Fe, N.M.; Eugene, Ore.; Burlington, Vt.; and Madison, Wis.

There are efforts under way to rally support for such resolutions in dozens of other
cities,
including New York, Chicago, Miami, Seattle, Boston and Portland, Ore., according to
the Bill
of Rights Defense Committee, a Florence, Mass.-based organization that supports "repeal
of parts of the USA PATRIOT Act and Executive Orders that infringe on Constitutional
rights."

There are votes on similar resolutions scheduled for January and February in Davis and
Fairfax, Calif., and New Paltz, N.Y.

The USA Patriot Act was passed by overwhelming margins in both the Senate and the
House of Representatives, but Nadel said she finds it hard to believe that legislators
read it
very carefully, because of what civil libertarians and constitutional rights groups
say are the
many areas where the law oversteps the bounds of proper law enforcement procedure.

Opponents of such measures say that the events of Sept. 11, 2001, are proof of the need
for extraordinary measures to protect the country from terrorists.

What Cost Freedom?

Giving up civil liberties is no way to fight that fight, Nadel said.

"It is not a small price to pay," she said. "Our country was based on civil liberties.
Some of
these governments like the Taliban that we fought to put out of power had restrictions
on
what people read. If that's what we're trying to eradicate around the world, I don't
think it's
something we should be adopting here."

The U.S. attorney's office in San Francisco — the local arm of the Justice Department,
which overseas federal investigations — declined to comment on the resolution that was
up
for a vote in Oakland.

Among the areas that Nadel said especially concern her in the Patriot Act are
increasing the
FBI's power to spy on Americans' e-mail and telephone conversations, allowing ethnic
profiling, denying the right to attorney to some detainees — which she said is "one of
the
most heinous aspects" of the law — and allowing law enforcement access to records of
the
books people take out of the library.

The city's Public Library Commission has already passed a resolution opposing the
Patriot
Act.

Though the resolution's sponsors said it has str

Coverage Trends
The New York Times gets an 'F' for geography
Michael Brown, The Electronic Intifada, 18 December 2002

Every six months or so a report comes out detailing the woeful state
of geographical knowledge held by many Americans. Usually people chuckle and wonder
how it is that so many Americans think California is on the East Coast. After all,
every
rightly educated American knows it's on the Left Coast.

But the consequences can be serious. This is particularly the case when it is The New
York
Times (NYT) butchering basic facts about where Israel begins and ends. Of course, as
Israel has never defined exactly where those borders are, it is alarming when the NYT
appears to be handing over vast swathes of new territory to Israel.

The most commonly misplaced territory in the region is Shebaa Farms, a small patch of
land that Israel continues to occupy on the border between Lebanon and the occupied
Golan
Heights. The news media regularly imply it is Israeli. The one thing we know is that
the
area is either Syrian or Lebanese, but most certainly not Israeli. Israeli-occupied
yes, but
not Israeli.

Recently, in the NYT of December 3, journalist Michael Wines began redrawing the map
considerably south of Shebaa Farms. He wrote, "In Tulkarm on the West Bank in northern
Israel..." After four days of complaint the NYT corrected the matter in the December 7
paper.

But on December 8 -- the very next day -- Mr. Wines was right back at it, writing, "In
the
southern Gaza Strip near the border with Egypt, a border patrol also disarmed a
110-pound
bomb found along a fence separating the Palestinian village of Khan Yunis and Ganei
Tal, a
town in an Israeli enclave surrounded by Palestinian territory."

There are so many mistakes nestled in this one sentence it is difficult to know where
to
begin.

First of all, Khan Yunis is not on the Egyptian border. That's Rafah. And Khan Yunis
is not a
"village" but a town and its adjoining refugee camp.

Ganei Tal, on the other hand, is anything but a "town." It is an illegal settlement --
of
approximately 75 Israeli families -- built on confiscated Palestinian land in
violation of the
Fourth Geneva Convention.

It is an obfuscation to say that Ganei Tal is "an enclave surrounded by Palestinian
territory." The settlers have stolen and continue to steal Palestinian land to expand
their
settlement. They alone can freely move from Gaza to Israel and the West Bank.
Palestinians
in Gaza cannot.

The 7,000 Israeli settlers in Gaza -- an estimate on the high end -- illegally control
one third
of Gaza while 1.2 million Palestinians are crammed into the other two thirds, and
further
fragmented by Israeli checkpoints. It is not the Palestinians who are hemming in the
Israeli
settlers but the other way around, making Gaza a huge outdoor prison for the
Palestinians
living there.

Israeli settlers and soldiers are caging Palestinians in a Bantustan- type existence
reminiscient of Apartheid South Africa, yet Mr. Wines conveys the opposite picture.

How many Gazans?

The New York Times cannot even keep straight, from one paper to the next, how many
Palestinians are in Gaza.

Journalist James Bennet consistently writes that there are 1.2 million Palestinians in
Gaza
though on December 14, in a poignant article about the Israeli military's killing of
five
Palestinian workers, he reduced the number to 1 million -- perhaps speaking in rough
terms.

But on the previous day, December 13, Wines inexplicably wrote that "more than 700,000
Palestinians" live there. This eliminates 40 percent of Gaza's Palestinian population.

Technically, I suppose it is "correct" in the same way that Charles M. Sennott of the
Boston
Globe was correct to write on December 8 that "Israeli human rights groups
estimate...at
least 400 Palestinian civilians" have been killed in the current uprising.

As Darryl Li, formerly of the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights, noted, this is like
saying,
"There are at least five people in China." Israeli human rights organization B'Tselem
provides a Palestinian civilian death toll more than three times higher than Sennott's.

Returning to Mr. Wines and his map-reading/demographic woes, the question emerges:
Were the Moscow mushrooms he described for his old beat merely radioactive or were
they packing something else that addled his geographical grip on reality?

The problem here is a bright journalist (notwithstanding a previous noteworthy run-in
with
FAIR), in an apparently new locale, not getting proper fact-checking help from the
foreign
desk. A lax attitude at the foreign desk regarding Israel's borders with Gaza and the
West
Bank allows this sort of geographical distortion to pass as fact.

Wines and other journalists need to get out of the Jerusalem briefing rooms (as Bennet
did
for The New York Times of December 14) and see the situation in Khan Yunis with their
own eyes on a r

[CTRL] (Fwd) United We Fall

--- Forwarded message follows ---

The following article is from the May 1950 issue of analysis, vol.
VI, no. 7.

United We Fall
by Frank Chodorov

The Union, next to our liberty, most dear.

~ John C. Calhoun

It is never too late to put up a fight for freedom. True, the
prospect for such a venture at this time seems bleak indeed, what
with the prevailing madness to push more power upon the political
overseer so that he might the better regulate our lives. Recruits
would be scarce. From the rank and file, those who under all
circumstances are determined to be harnessed, little can be
expected; they are too preoccupied with mere existence. And those
who seem to have the necessary ingredients – that is, those who
have by their own initiative pushed themselves above the general
level – are equally fervent for a regulated and subsidized existence
under an omnipotent State. Subvention has become everybody's
business.

The despair of those who still put a value on freedom is
understandable. Perhaps, as they say, it is best to let the country
have its fill of socialism – or fascism or communism or any other
pup from the litter of absolutism – and be done with a quixotic
struggle.

After a century or two of that kind of existence, when human dignity
shall have scraped bottom, a Moses will emerge from the bulrushes
and gain a respectable following. By that time, they point out, the
State shall have become emaciated from malnutrition, slaves being
poor providers, and a handful of resolute men can push it over. It
was ever thus. Every civilization we know of arose and flourished in
the sunshine of freedom; political institutions attached themselves
even at the beginning, but remained quiescent until an abundance
of economic goods stimulated cupidity; then followed a period of
increasing political predation until at long last the civilization
disintegrated and became an historical or archeological curio. After
a while, freedom germinates a new civilization. That is the
inevitable cycle, and we can do nothing, they say, to prevent or
retard it.

Maybe so; maybe our civilization is also doomed by the ineluctable
forces of history; maybe it is in the decline right now.

Nevertheless, men do what they are impelled by an inner urge to do,
not what history dictates. The stars in the heavens tend to their
eternal business while we transitory mortals travel within our own
specific orbits. It was no historical imperative that directed the
pens of those who signed the Declaration of Independence; it was
the integrity of the signers. There were many at the time – the Tories
– who deemed the venture foolhardy and undesirable, and they
could have argued the historical uselessness of all revolutions.
Nevertheless, the rebels (none of whom were driven to it by
economic necessity) put their signatures to what at that time
seemed to be their own death warrant. Why? For lack of better
answer, let us say they were made of a particular kind of stuff and
could not do otherwise.

Looking to history for causation, we find that man's constantly
recurring excursions in search of freedom are identified by their
leadership. The logical inference is that when men of that stripe
appear on the scene the cause of freedom is not neglected. If, for
instance, those who now prate about "free enterprise" were willing to
risk bankruptcy for it, as the men of the Declaration were willing to
risk their necks for independence, the present drive for the
collectivization of capital would not have such easy going. Assuming
that they are fully aware of the implications in the phrase they
espouse, and are sincere in their protestations, the fact that they
are unwilling to suffer mortification of the flesh disqualifies them
from leadership, and "free enterprise" remains merely a mouthing.

The present low estate of freedom in this country must be laid to
lack of leadership. Whether or not leadership could have averted, or
can still stop, the socialistic trend, may be open to question; that
a glorious fight for freedom might yet enliven the American scene is
not. And, if we can trust the historic pattern, the odds are that
nature will give us, in her own good time and at her pleasure, the
kind of men that can and will make the good fight.

A Block to Power

The American terrain, so to speak, is I fortuitously favorable for
the forces of freedom. Not only is there a strong a supporting
tradition, but the Constitutional form of government which grew out
of this tradition is still in existence, though somewhat distorted,
and could provide the favorable battle line. It must be remembered
that from the very beginning of the country political power has been
in bad repute; even though it is well on its way to religious status,
political power in America still lacks the adulation that it receives
from peoples long inured to submissiveness.

In the beginning, the Founding Fathers recognized the need of
government in organized society, but were

U.S. Social Security May Reach To Mexico

By Jonathan Weisman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, December 19, 2002; Page A01

Pushed by the Mexican government, the Bush administration is working on a
Social Security accord that would put tens of thousands of Mexicans onto
the Social Security roster and send hundreds of millions of dollars in
benefits south of the border.

White House and Mexican government officials say discussions on an
agreement to align the Social Security systems of the two countries are
informal and preliminary. But excerpts from an internal Social Security
Administration memo obtained this month say the agreement "is expected to
move forward at an accelerated pace," with the support of both governments,
and could be in force by next October.

The pact would be the latest, but by far the largest, of a series of
treaties designed to ensure that people from one country working in another
aren't taxed by both nations' social security systems. In its first year,
the agreement is projected to trigger 37,000 new claims from Mexicans who
worked in the United States legally and paid Social Security taxes but have
been unable to claim their checks, according to a memo prepared by Ted
Girdner, the Social Security Administration's assistant associate
commissioner for international operations.

Extrapolating from U.S. and Mexican government statistics, the accord could
cost $720 million a year within five years of implementation. One
independent estimate put the total at $1 billion a year -- a large sum, but
a trifle compared with the $372 billion in Social Security benefits
currently being paid to 46.4 million recipients.

Mexican President Vicente Fox has been pushing President Bush to sign a
Social Security agreement with Mexico as something of a consolation prize
to make up for Bush's failure to pursue promised immigration reforms,
according to Latino lobbyists close to the Fox administration. Mexican
officials began pressing the White House hard at meetings that preceded the
Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Los Cabos, Mexico, in October.

"When the legalization talks began going nowhere, the Mexicans began
focusing on this," said Maria Blanco, national senior counsel for the
Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund. "They really bore in
at Los Cabos."

Arturo Sarukhan, a top official in Mexico's foreign ministry, said that
after Mexico's failure to win a comprehensive package of immigration
reforms from Bush, it is lobbying in Washington for important incremental
steps. "How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time," he said.

The Social Security agreement, he said, is one of those less-sexy things
that Mexico has been pushing to deepen its relationship with the United
States and improve the day-to-day lives of Mexicans.

Just yesterday, Fox underscored the political pressure he is under
domestically to secure concessions from the United States when he journeyed
to the border city of Nuevo Laredo to call for an "urgent" immigration
accord to end discrimination against Mexican workers north of the border.

Concern is rising on Capitol Hill -- and even among some White House
economic aides -- that any agreement on Social Security could add a new
burden to the benefits system, just as the baby-boom generation is
preparing to retire. House Ways and Means Committee staff members are
meeting today with Social Security officials to hash out projected costs
for such an agreement.

"We are concerned about the sheer magnitude of the agreement," said a House
Republican aide who is an expert on Social Security. About 94,000
beneficiaries living abroad have been brought into the system by the 20
existing international agreements. A Mexican agreement alone could bring in
162,000 in the first five years.

White House spokeswoman Claire Buchan said the issue is being explored only
at a "technical level" at this point, and the administration has not yet
decided to move forward with formal negotiations. "A totalization agreement
with Mexico would have significant implications," she said.

Miguel Monterrubio, a spokesman for the Mexican Embassy, said several
meetings have taken place between the Social Security Administration and
its Mexican counterpart since November 2001, but he, too, called them
informal.

The Social Security memo indicates that work may be further along than both
governments are saying. According to the memo, "the application workloads
generated by an agreement with Mexico will be much larger than those
resulting from any of the 20 existing agreements" with other countries.

In addition to the flurry of new claims, an additional 13,000 Mexicans
entitled to benefits but cut off by provisions in recent immigration laws
could also begin receiving their checks. In a 1996 immigration reform law,
Congress decreed that foreigners not legally residing

Ezra Solomon, Who Shaped Finance Theory, Dies at 82

December 19, 2002
By PAUL LEWIS

Ezra Solomon, an economist at Stanford University whose
work helped shape modern theories of corporate finance,
died on Dec. 9. He was 82.

The cause was a heart attack, said the Stanford Graduate
School of Business, which announced his death on Tuesday.

Dr. Solomon's best-known book, "The Theory of Financial
Management," appeared in 1963, shortly after he became a
professor at Stanford. It is regarded as having helped
change the study of finance from a descriptive process into
a more rigorous, theory-based discipline.

He served on the president's Council of Economic Advisers
from 1971 to 1973, when the Nixon administration suspended
the dollar's convertibility into gold and imposed an import
surcharge and wage and price controls to try to recast the
international financial system.

A result was the end of the so-called Bretton Woods system
of fixed but adjustable exchange rates for major
currencies. That system, established at the end of World
War II, was eventually replaced by the present system of
floating exchange rates.

Dr. Solomon was recruited to the council by its chairman,
Paul W. McCracken. At his Senate confirmation hearings in
June 1971, Dr. Solomon hinted at the startling economic
moves to come that August when he indicated support for a
floating dollar instead of one tied to gold.

"I am not against letting the dollar float; it is one way
of finding parity," he said. "It may become necessary that
in the future we take the initiative and let the dollar
float."

Ezra Solomon was born on March 20, 1920, in Rangoon, Burma,
when it was a part of British India. He graduated from the
University of Rangoon in 1940 and then fled the Japanese
army by going to India, where he joined the Royal Navy.

In 1950, he received his doctorate from the University of
Chicago. In 1956, he joined the graduate business school
there as a professor of finance. He moved to Stanford in
1961. He was the author of 13 books.

His wife, Janet, died last month.

He is survived by three
daughters, Catherine Shan Solomon of Newark, Calif.; Ming
Solomon Lovejoy of Eureka, Mont.; and Laura Solomon-Oyarce
of Stanford, Calif.

U.S. Drops Armenian Men from List of Visitors Who Must Register

December 19, 2002
By JOHN M. BRODER

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 18 - Reversing course, the Department of
Justice has dropped Armenia from the list of countries
whose adult male citizens living temporarily in the United
States must register with immigration authorities.

The turnabout, on Tuesday, followed loud complaints from
the government of Armenia and Armenian groups in the United
States over a notice, published by the department in the
Federal Register last Friday, that added Armenia, Pakistan
and Saudi Arabia to 18 countries already listed in the
so-called special registration program.

"I don't know why Armenia appeared on the list in the first
place," said Arman Kirakossian, the Armenian ambassador to
the United States. "We have no terrorist groups in Armenia.
We are part of the campaign against terrorism."

Armenia is a predominantly Christian country, the
ambassador noted. With the exception of North Korea, the 20
countries that remain on the list are Arab or predominantly
Muslim.

Mr. Kirakossian said that roughly 1.5 million people of
Armenian descent were living in the United States, at least
a third of them here in the Los Angeles area. He said he
had no estimate of the number of Armenians in the country
on temporary visas who would have been forced to register
with the immigration service.

The ambassador said that as soon as the notice appeared
last Friday, he and other Armenian officials contacted the
White House, Congress and the Justice Department to try to
have the decision overturned. Armenian-American groups
joined in the intensive lobbying effort, which continued
through the weekend.

"What we were told was it was a misunderstanding, a
mistake," Mr. Kirakossian said.

Jorge Martinez, a Justice Department spokesman, offered no
explanation for the original decision or the change.

"I am not responsible for what is published in the Federal
Register," Mr. Martinez said. "All I can say is that two
new countries were added this week: Pakistan and Saudi
Arabia."

The program requires men over the age of 16 from countries
considered sources of potential terrorists to appear before
officers of the Immigration and Naturalization Service to
be interviewed, fingerprinted and photographed. Failure to
register can result in criminal charges and immediate
expulsion.

Halliburton Agrees to $2.8 Billion Asbestos Penalty

December 19, 2002
By FT.COM

Halliburton, the energy company once led by Vice-President
Dick Cheney, agreed on Wednesday to pay up to $2.8bn cash,
59.5m Halliburton shares worth about $1.2bn, and notes
valued at less than $100m to settle over 300,000 asbestos
claims.

The settlement by the Dallas-based oilfield services and
construction company provides for two Halliburton
subsidiaries, DII Industries and Kellogg Brown & Root, and
certain of their units, to enter pre-packaged bankruptcies.
KBR's US government operations business and KBR entities
without US operations will be excluded.

The agreement remains subject to a definitive agreement
covering the details; acceptance by holders of asbestos
claims to a plan of reorganisation; financing the
settlement on terms acceptable to Halliburton; and board
and court approval.

"If this transaction is completed, it will resolve a major
issue that has been clouding our future," said Dave Lesar,
chairman and chief executive of Halliburton.

"Not only have we taken care to responsibly provide for
those affected by asbestos, this settlement will allow us
to concentrate all our efforts on . . . Halliburton's core
businesses."

Halliburton's shares rose 1.13 per cent to $20.58 on the
news, which analysts say represents the final stretch in
its long race to resolve its asbestos liabilities.

Nonetheless, Moody's Investors Service immediately put
Halliburton's Baa2 investment-grade credit ratings under
review for possible downgrade as it considers the financial
implications for the company.

The settlement was reached with attorneys representing
substantially more than the required 75 per cent of known
asbestos claimants needed to achieve resolution on all of
the cases, and it covers all pending and future personal
injury asbestos claims against Halliburton and its
subsidiaries.

Halliburton is working with banks and advisers to obtain
financing commitments, which it expects will leave it with
leverage ratios that compare favourably to peers and are in
line with investment-grade companies.

Mr Lesar said the court- supervised reorganisation was the
only way to fully and permanently resolve all asbestos
liability by establishing a trust to address potential
future claims.

The filing should take place in the first quarter of 2003
and should be concluded within 90 days.

How odd that a holy meteor is out of place, but a special star is not.  Prudy

[CTRL] Leaked report says German and US firms supplied arms to Saddam

Leaked report says German and US firms supplied arms to Saddam

Baghdad's uncensored report to UN names Western companies alleged to have
developed its weapons of mass destruction

By Tony Paterson in Berlin

18 December 2002

Iraq's 11,000-page report to the UN Security Council lists 150 foreign
companies, including some from America, Britain, Germany and France, that
supported Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction programme, a German
newspaper said yesterday.

Berlin's left-wing Die Tageszeitung newspaper said it had seen a copy of the
original Iraqi dossier which was vetted for sensitive information by US
officials before being handed to the five permanent Security Council members
two weeks ago. An edited version was passed to the remaining 10 members of
the Security Council last night.

British officials said the list of companies appeared to be accurate. Eighty
German firms and 24 US companies are reported to have supplied Iraq with
equipment and know-how for its weapons programmes from 1975 onwards and in
some cases support for Baghdad's conventional arms programme had continued
until last year.

It is not known who leaked the report, but it could have come from Iraq.
Baghdad is keen to embarrass the US and its allies by showing the close
involvement of US, German, British and French firms in helping Iraq develop
its weapons of mass destruction when the country was a bulwark against the
much feared spread of Iranian revolutionary fervour to the Arab world.

The list contained the names of long-established German firms such as Siemens
as well as US multi-nationals. With government approval, Siemens exported
machines used to eliminate kidney stones which have a "dual use" high
precision switch used to detonate nuclear bombs. Ten French companies were
also named along with a number of Swiss and Chinese firms. The newspaper said
a number of British companies were cited, but did not name them.

"From about 1975 onwards, these companies are shown to have supplied entire
complexes, building elements, basic materials and technical know-how for
Saddam Hussein's programme to develop nuclear, chemical and biological
weapons of mass destruction," the newspaper said. "They also supplied rockets
and complete conventional weapons systems," it added.

The five permanent members of the Security Council – the United States,
Britain, Russia, France and China – have repeatedly opposed revealing the
extent of foreign companies' involvement, although a mass of relevant
information was collected by UN weapons inspectors who visited the country
between 1991 and 1998. The UN claims that publishing the extent of the
companies' involvement in Iraq would jeopardise necessary co-operation with
such firms.

German involvement outstripped that of all the other countries put together,
the paper said. During the period to 1991, the German authoritiespermitted
weapons co-operation with Iraq and in some cases "actively encouraged" it,
according to the newspaper which cited German assistance allegedly given to
Iraq for the development of poison gas used in the 1988 massacre of Kurds in
northern Iraq. It said that after the massacre America reduced its military
co-operation with Iraq but German firms continued their activities until the
Gulf War.

Die Tageszeitung quoted sources close to the US Vice President, Dick Cheney,
as saying the Bush administration was hoping to prove a German company was
continuing to co-operate with the Iraqi regime over the supply of equipment
allegedly useful in the construction of weapons of mass destruction.

American weapons experts have recently voiced concern that the German
Government has permitted Siemens to sell Baghdad at least eight sophisticated
medical machines which contain devices that are vital for nuclear weapons.
The machines, known as "lithotripters", use ultrasound to destroy kidney
stones in patients. However, each machine contains an electronic switch that
can be used as a detonator in an atomic bomb, according to US experts. Iraq
was reported to have requested an extra 120 switches as "spare parts" during
the initial transaction.

The delivery of the machines was approved by the European Commission and the
UN because sanctions against Iraq do not apply to medical equipment. Siemens
and the German Government have insisted that the machines, which are being
used in northern Iraq under a World Health Organisation programme, cannot be
used to make nuclear weapons.
