This is remarkable. *Who* invited him?Tudjman was a Holocaust denier, a Serbophobe and an apologist for the Croatian clerical fascists, the Ustashas. [1] During World War II, their 'Independent' State of Croatia set up the first Nazi death camp in Europe. It was called 'Jasenovac'. An Associated Press dispatch reported that Tudjman wrote: "...the 'main characteristics' of Jews were 'selfishness, craftiness, unreliability, miserliness, underhandedness and secrecy."' Who invited this anti-Semite to the Holocaust Museum? The same Associated Press dispatch reported: "...Naomi Paiss, communications director for the [Holocaust] museum, said the State Department recommended that Tudjman, as a democratically elected leader, be given an invitation." (AP, 21/4/93) Ahh, "recommended." As in: they recommended; she obeyed. Two points about this.First, even if Tudjman had been elected democratically, which is highly debatable, [2] why would that be relevant? It was no secret he was a racist thug. This was obvious long before the summer of 1995, at which time Croatian troops, led by US 'advisers', drove the entire Serbian population, mostly farmers, out of the Krajina area of Yugoslavia. Tudjman went on a train tour to celebrate. His racism - grimly reminiscent of Nazism - was made clear in this excerpt from a speech, broadcast by Croatian radio and monitored by the BBC:"And [applause] there can be no return to the past, to the times when they the Serbs were spreading cancer in the heart of Croatia, cancer which was destroying the Croatian national being and which did not allow the Croatian people to be the master in its own house and did not allow Croatia to lead an independent and sovereign life under this wide, blue sky and within the world community of sovereign nations." [3]"Cancer destroying the heart of the Croatian national being..." If this sounds like anti-Semitism, it should be no surprise. In Tudjman's 1989 book, "Wastelands - Historical Truth," he endorsed the amazing claim that in the Jasenovac death camp, Jewish prisoners:"...jealously kept the monopoly of the management inside the camp and took the initiative in provoking not only individual but also mass slaughters of the non-Jews, Communists, partisans and Serbs..."-- Franjo Tudjman, 1989, Wastelands--Historical Truth, Zagreb, Croatia: Nakladni zavod Matice HrvatskeOnly a handful of people survived Jasenovac to contradict Tudjman's infamous lie. For example, most of the 80,000 Yugoslav Jews were murdered. So if Tudjman was a Nazi apologist/thug, *why* was he invited to the opening of the *Holocaust* Museum?Which brings us to the second point: he who decides the guest list runs the party.Ms. Paiss' comment, quoted by Associated Press, above, communicated with eloquence who had the ultimate power. For the State Department to use the opening of the Museum to whitewash Tudjman, who blamed Jews for the deaths at Jasenovac, was audacious. To be sure, some well-known Jewish leaders were quoted in the days before the opening, objecting to Tudjman's presence. But their objections were flexible, like a safety valve; they relented. On the night of the opening, they were silent.Outside the building, Holocaust deniers picketed. Were they stupidly unaware that Mr. Tudjman, King of the deniers, was inside, on stage? Or were they there precisely to divert attention from the fact? The Holocaust had been seized by State and would henceforth be a weapon of US policy to glorify or denigrate; the Museum was the showcase. That of course is why the US government built it in Washington. Handy when needed.Mr. Tudjman was on the 'to-be-glorified' list. The Serbs, who had lost hundreds of thousands to the Nazi death machine, were on the denigrated list. Thus President Milosevic was conspicuously *not* invited to the opening. And not only that; President Clinton and Holocaust scholar Elie Wiesel spoke, implicitly comparing the Serbian people to the Nazis. Clinton threatened war against the Serbs. And while the Serbian people, whom the Ustashas had slaughtered alongside the Jews, were denounced and threatened with slaughter, no one spoiled the State Department's show by mentioning that an heir to the Ustashas, whom Hitler once called "our Nazis," shared the stage. Why? Why did *nobod

I learned with great regret your introduction of H.Res. 28 in support of the independence of Kosovo (the correct name of the Serbian province you so callously propose to take from a sovereign nation), the sacred soil of Serbia’s Jerusalem. Would you be so cavalier with your pronouncements if you were dealing with the territory of Israel or the United States? You wouldn’t dare advocate giving Jerusalem to the Palestinians. Will you advocate turning Texas, California and Arizona over to Mexico when the illegal immigrants have numbers or power to demand it? Why are you supporting Osama bin Laden’s Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) who are engaged in sex slavery, prostitution, kidnapping, murder and drugs? Are you that uninformed that you do not know these things? Serbs were once the majority in Kosovo until ethnically cleansed by Hitler, then by Tito, in his hatred of Orthodox Christian Serbs, who encouraged Albanians to cross illegally into Kosovo as easily as Mexicans cross illegally into this country, and the ultimate "final solution" primarily by NATO with the unjust and illegal bombing of innocent Serbian women and children. While the Serbian minority continues to be murdered in Kosovo by those whom you support, and when 13th and 14th century churches and monasteries continue to be desecrated and destroyed by those whom you support, I can only be ashamed of the EVIL you and your co-conspirator are planning to carry out against a Christian people who were our allies in two world wars, while the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem who was on the side of Hitler planning our destruction must be laughing from his grave. Even before the body of Kosovo is cold in the grave, H.Res. 28 prematurely references Kosovo as Kosova. Therefore, I must conclude that you and your co-conspirator are grave robbers. City specifications call for electrical conductivity (EC) readings no higher than 1 in local soils. When soil samples showed damaging EC readings 4.6 to 7-times higher than this maximum permissible level, Dave Dickie suspected that elevated levels of electricity-conducting metals in the soils could be leading to the plants chlorosis condition. A life-long plane spotter, Dickie also wondered if there could be a connection to events unfolding on ATC radar scopes during his regular visits to the Edmonton municipal airports Air Traffic Control center. Last Fathers Day, Dickie and an excited group of 12 year-olds watched two KC-135s, tagged Petro 011 and Petro 012, flying at 34,000 and 36,000 feet south and north of Edmonton. According to the controllers watching the scopes, both U.S. Air Force KC-135 air-refueling tankers had flown south out of Alaska. But the big Boeings were not refueling other aircraft. Instead, as Dickie, the kids and the controllers watched, the four-engine jets began making patterns over Edmonton circuits the controllers called it. The Stratotankers were working alone in commanded airspace from which all other aircraft were excluded. And they were leaving chemtrails. TELLTALE SIGNATURES The signature is significant commented one radar operator, referring to trails clearly visible on his scope extending for miles behind the KC-135s. In contrast, a commercial JAL flight on the same display left no visible trail. Going outside, Dickie and several controllers scanned clear blue skies over the northern Canadian city. Visibility was outstanding. They easily located a KC-135 leaving a lingering, broad white plume. They could also clearly see the JAL airliner at a similar flight level. It left no contrail at all. On other occasions, Dickie has watched KC-135s on Edmonton radar leaving lingering trails as low as 18,000 feet. We see these guys up here a lot, radar techs told Dickie, explaining that the USAF tanker flights originate in Alaska and continue on into the States after gridding the Edmonton area with emanations clearly visible on radar. You should have seen it when they had the big summit up in Calgary, the Canadian controllers exclaimed. It was exciting to watch them. The G7 maneuvers suggested that barium might have been sprayed to enhance radio and radar surveillance over what protesters condemned as a globalization conference aimed at worldwide corporate domination. That was speculation. But back in Edmonton, there was no doubt that particulates were being sprayed by the tankers. Pointing to birdie feet on their scopes, the radar technicians showed Dickie particles appearing as concentrations of dots in the radar-tracked plumes. Zooming in and out on each plane with the click of cursor, Dickie said that he and the controllers could see different contrails. Some were short, and quickly vanished from the scopes. Other trails were thick, long and lingering not acting like contrails at all. Especially exciting for Dickie and the kids was watching head-on passes between KC-135s and commercial airliners. Flying directly at each other with a closing rate of nearly 1,000 mph, the huge jets app

If they lose it, they stand to lose everything. See Andersen, Worldcom and Enron. If they can keep their dirty laundry out of the public eye, all the better. They do this by destroying incriminating documents, by lying, by covering up. If they are caught red-handed by the cops, there's another way -- plead guilty or negotiate a deferred prosecution agreement and ask the government not to publicize the agreement. We've always suspected that these kinds of secret settlement side deals are happening, but never could put our finger on it. Until earlier this week, when we attended a "media nosh" at the Washington Legal Foundation. That's the group that takes out ads in the New York Times ripping into the Justice Department for prosecuting corporate criminals. The title of the session: Is Creative Enforcement of White Collar Criminal Laws in the Public Interest? The message that the corporate-funded think tank wanted to get out, as one paper put it: "criminalizing business judgment could stagnate the U.S. economy." In the question-and-answer session, we asked the distinguished panel of white collar crime defense lawyers whether they could name a recent criminal prosecution of a corporation that should not have been brought because the theory of enforcement was too "creative." Ira Raphaelson, a former federal prosecutor, and now a white collar defense attorney at O'Melveny & Myers, said he had one, but couldn't talk about it. What do you mean, you can't talk about it? I promised my client that I won't talk about it, he says. It was a criminal prosecution and it's on the public record, right? Yes, but I'm not going to tell you any more about it. Was the case settled? Yes, he says. Did the Justice Department notify the press that the case was settled? No, he says. The company completed the negotiations. A lot of money was paid. I could tell you about the case, but it would be to the detriment of my client, so I won't, he says. Raphaelson said that the case involved a corporation that was charged with crimes under the collective knowledge doctrine. That's a doctrine that holds that a corporation can be held criminally liable for the collective knowledge of its employees -- even though no one individual has sufficient knowledge to hold that individual culpable. Raphaelson said that use of the collective knowledge doctrine is on the increase. And that's a bad thing, he says. So, it's a good thing that the Justice Department didn't publicize the case, because it would make the Department look bad. Raphaelson said that there have always been these kind of "side deals" between the government and defense attorneys not to publicize a case. "There are settled criminal cases that the government and the defense attorneys agree not to talk about in public," he says. "There always have been these side deals. If there is a prosecution that is a bad prosecution that is settled, and I have a side deal with the prosecutors not to talk about the prosecution, I'm not going to talk about it. In my case, the government put out no press release. There was no publicity to the case." Lanny Breuer, the former special counsel to President Clinton and currently a partner at Covington & Burling, agreed with Raphaelson that such a secret settlement practice exists. "There is this kind of practice of keeping information about criminal cases out of the press," Breuer said. Breuer says he's seeing it increasingly with deferred prosecution agreements. That's where the government will tell a defendant -- if you are a good boy for a year, the charges will be dropped. The criminal slate will be wiped clean. The U.S. Attorney's

-Caveat Lector- The thing that drives these madmen is blind religion and lack of spirituality. Remember in the US how often you had clerics vocalising in the pulpits and media for the use weapons of mass destruction as soon as they became available against whoever they perceived as their enemy. Catholic clerics were the inspiration for the first Terrorist mass Bomber were they not? During the Cold War it was the religious crusade against "godless" Jew-Commie Russia. Clerics advocated the use of Atomic bombs. Russia was a major card player in the Mid-East and an ally to some Arab nations. The Arabs could play the Russia card at the Americans too. With the decline of the Soviet power its influence in the Arab and general mid-East world has diminished. Now the holy Crusaders have a little less resistance to wage their millennial war against the Muslim Infidels. "Blood for Oil" of course is the conspiracists cover story for the war; the alleged "secret" real reason for the Crusade. But the crusade has been on-going and on-building for hundreds of years before oil was even thought of. Re: [CTRL] Solana, the EU and religion
-Caveat Lector- Amalekites, Sihon, and other inhabitants of Canaan, were Nephilim, giants, offspring of the union between the Ben Elohim and women, according to the Bible. They had re-established themselves, as prophesied in Genesis 6, and were up to the same scheme as before the flood which was to prevent the Messiah from being born by occupying the foretold land that the Messiah was to be born in. They were also, no doubt, up to polluting the genetics of mankind, to cancel the ability for the line of Judah, to bring forth the kinsman redeemer, as they did before the flood. They had to be utterly destroyed. It was as simple as killing cancer cells. It was not genocide, or murder, but a just war against an insidious evil. The Catholic religion, as are most other so-called Christian religions, are NOT the people of the God of the Bible. They are as every bit riddled with the occult mystery religion as was Babylon, Assyria, Jerusalem, and Egypt. The Mass is an un-biblical tradition, a tradition of man, not God. Just as is Christmas, Easter sun-worship, etc. Although they act in the "name of a god", they act on thier own. As for New Age, it is just the same old mystery religion, wrapped in modern trappings. Nazism? Steeped in the occult and supported by the Roman Catholics. I think a lot of evidence would weigh on that side. How about history in the Torah? Such as the monotheistic Hebrews committing genocide against the Amalekites, killing men, women, children and at times splitting open pregnant women like coconuts, all in the name of a "monotheist" deity. "Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass." 1Sa 15:3 More slaughter of innocents, "And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed the men, and the women, and the little ones, of every city, we left none to remain." Deuteronomy 2:34 "And we utterly destroyed them, as we did unto Sihon king of Hesbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children, of every city ..." Deuteronomy 3:6-7 Well we could go on and on, you probably get the picture. Pretty high morality. I won't mentally strain any here with the well-known history of Vatican "monotheism" which committed atrocities Nazis would cringe at! More monotheistic "morality"? Let us look at the Catholic "Mass". The height of its sacerdotal liturgy is the public blood ritual and cannibalisation of their alleged deity. To eat their lords flesh and to drink his blood. It is not permitted for one to see this as mere symbol (if that in itself were not horrid enough!) In accord with their Canon Laws, if you say that this is not the real blood and real flesh of deity you are a cursed being, a heretic worthy of death. "If any one denieth that, in the sacrament of the most holy Eucharist, are contained truly, really, and substantially, the body and blood together with the soul and divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ, and consequently the whole Christ; but saith that He is only therein as in a sign, or in figure, or virtue; let him be anathema." The Catholic Council of Trent (1545-1563) hurled 125 anathemas that is, eternal damnation and curses, at heretics. So we have this brutal public blood ritual and cannibalism which occurs thousands of times a day in the US alone. It is enacted in its most prominent cities and towns and supposedly represents mans highest liturgical ritualistic act, the supreme expression of devotion to deity. With this type of tribal superstition at the core of its highest sacerdotal ritual, one can only wonder how a supposedly thinking, rational person could possibly write Catholic monotheism and morality in the same line as you do Zuukie? Yet whilst men gaze and appear transfixed by this crass superstition, on the other hand we have muck-raking pseudo "Conspiracy Researchers," claiming to probe some dark, secretive and evil ritualism of, say the Masons, in their scattergun hit-and-miss rumour mill oft laden with lies and innuendo producing shadows which they fray at like apoplectics. I tend to see something wrong with this picture and something quite inconsistent with such "research". What is the relevance of New Age-ism? Not much really in the big picture. Just another bogyman of the establishment clerics. The clerico-fascists couldn't exist without their big devil and little imps to frighten the flock into their arms. New Age thinking is inherently opposed to science and reason, thus it has always been open to intellectual fraud, mysticism, and fanatical conspiracy claims. Fascist ideas abo

I would suggest you begin research with the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) church which is the largest Christian Sabbatarian denomination and then proceed into the minor subsets and sects of such groups. Partly Masonic flavoured (or ripped-off), but more importantly of the GNOSTIC faith, is Mormonism and not the JW's, it would appear. The latter group are a resurrected form of the ancient, (called heresy), of Arianism (not Aryanism btw)! The SDA had a female prophet, Ellen G. I am well aware, for example in the NT book of Acts, of the Nipponic influence on Christianity, "And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one ACCORD in one place." Acts 2:1 How all the saints crammed into one Honda is a true marvel in itself! [CTRL] Concrete Evidence of Israeli Apartheid
-Caveat Lector- http://sf.indymedia.org/news/2003/01/1567638.php Concrete Evidence of Israeli Apartheid by Belinda Green Wednesday January 29, 2003 at 01:51 PM While the mainstream U.S. corporate media, along with Zionist-infiltrated alternative media, take great pains to avoid the "A" word (Apartheid) with regards to Israel's racist regime, the facts are there for all to see. bypass.jpegw96765.jpeg, JPG image, 432x336 Obviously pro-Israeli media and Zionists do not want the American public to know the true extent of Israel's racist regime. They try to hide the fact that Israel was founded on ethnic cleansing. They try to hide the fact that there are Jews-only bypass roads like the one pictured. These Jews-only bypasses go to Jews-only settlements built on confiscated Palestinian land, and are illegal according to UN Resolutions, International Law and world opinion. If Palestinians are caught on one of the Jews-only bypass roads, they are subject to being shot and/or beat up. The winding road underneath the bypass road is the original Palestinian road, built before the racist Zionist Jews showed up to take possession of the land from the Palestinians in 1948, when the Unitied League of Nations, made up of European countries and the US took it upon themselves to give away Arab land that was not theirs to give away in the first place to Eastern European Zionist Jews. On the very day Israel was thus immorally created, gangs of Israeli terrorists massacred thousands of Palestinians and drove off 800,000 Palestinians, about half of the population at the time. Israel has refused to allow even one of these original Palestinian refugees back to their ancestral homeland of Palestine-Israel, even though it is their right according to UN Resolutions, International Law and world opinion. The winding Palestinian road is a dirt road and need of repairs. It lengthens travel time by hours and is difficult to maneuver. Palestinians pay taxes to the Israeli government but receive far less in exchange for their tax dollars than Jewish Israelis do. The Palestinians who live in the West Bank and The Gaza Strip, otherwise known as the Palestinian Territories, and The Occupied Territories, have been living in a stateless limbo, neither granted equal citizenship as Israelis nor granted sovereignty as their own state. This is due to a spineless international community in the face of Zionist-dominated American politics and the resulting ineffectiveness of the UN to enforce its resolutions on racist, anti-democratic, apartheid Israel, which every other country condemns except for the Zionist-dominated United States. Even inside Israel, inequalities exist between Jews and non-Jews. 92% of the land inside Israel is officially allocated to use by Jews only. This has been official policy since day one of Israel's creation in 1948 and overseen by The Jewish Agency by appointment of the Israeli government. Other inequalities include only allowing Jews to serve in the military and thus receive many financial benefits, the impossibility of running a campaign on anything other than a Jewish supremacist state, special tax benefits for Jews not offered to non-Jews, and many more. Most importantly, the so-called "right to return" is extended to Jews from around the world who have no connection to Israel other than they are Jewish, yet Palestinians who have a living, breathing and dying connection for generations to the land of Palestine, now Israel, are not allowed their right to return although it is indeed their right according to UN Resolutions, International Law and world opinion. The racist ideology of Zionism which manifests itself in ethnic cleansing is at the root of the problems with the Israel-Palestine conflict. The initial injustice of the creation of Israel must be addressed, and the Palestinians finally must receive equal rights, as in a real democracy, and including the right to return for all the Palestinian refugees. Zionism must be eliminated from modern, civilized society as was Nazism and white supremacism. Israel must be internationally isolated and boycotted until it becomes a true democracy. Zionism must be banished from American politics. Only then will there begin to be more justice and peace throughout the world. True Americans do not want to support a racist, apartheid country. We must ever be vigilent about racism raising its ugly head. Zionism is the racism du jour that has up until now escaped our notice. However , thanks to the information highway of the internet, the house of cards that is Israel and Zionism will surely tumble, as did the Berlin Wall and Apartheid South Africa. Let's do our best to make that happen sooner than later. Every day that passes by, life is progressively worse for the defenseless Palestinian people that have been abandoned by the powers that be in the world. However, we the people, must take our personal power, which is great, and make the difference to pressure our
[CTRL] George Bush's POWER LUST
-Caveat Lector- http://www.lewrockwell.com/rockwell/powerlust.html Power Lust by Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr. I would rather eat my keyboard than watch the State of the Union speech, so consider this article an act of sacrificial public service. The most irritating thing about the State of the Union is that we are a captive audience â in every way. This guy taxes us, spends our money on stuff he likes, sends our kids to war on his decision, lies to us, dares to believe that his personal will is somehow more important than yours or mine or anyone else's solely because he managed to eke out a few more electoral votes than Gore two years ago, and to top it off, expects that we will watch for more than an hour as he prattles, while his minions interrupt him only to stand and applaud. Where to begin to criticize? George Bush is the biggest spender since Lyndon Johnson, increasing federal spending at a rate twice that of Clinton, and yet he stands up and demands spending restraint, seeming to blame everyone but himself. He talks about freedom and opportunity and then brags about his new bureaucracies, spending programs, mandates, comprehensive plans, regulations, and goals concerning all our lives, from how our kids are educated to the cars we drive to the way we care for those in need. He claims to care for life, decries partial-birth abortion, but refuses to rule out the use of nuclear weapons in the war he is plotting. He calls on America to feed the entire world, liberate all its women, educate all its children, and cure all its sick, even as ghettos rife with every social pathology languish miles from the White House. Hypocrisy? He denounces bureaucrats and praises innovation only to demand a huge new boondoggle program to put researchers on the dole. Indeed, the underlying assumption behind the entire speech was that Americaâs commitment is identical to his own commitment, which is reflected in his plans for your money. Donât write me to say that he wants to cut taxes, and so we should like him. Every few minutes, we heard spending numbers: tens and hundreds of millions, tens and hundreds of billions! It is never too much, and nothing is outside his purview. Indeed, he calls for the federal government, under his leadership, to "transform" our "souls." He went further: he says he is defending the "hopes of all mankind." His entire foreign policy seems like a massive effort to incite every terrorist in the world against this country, and otherwise encourage every small country to arm to the teeth against the US threat. From the governmentâs point of view, such would only increase the power of D.C., so one has to wonder whether this is the point after all. And not to nitpick, but how can he at once say that Iraq is despotic for ignoring the UN even as he brags that he will ignore the UN if he chooses? "The course of this nation does not depend on the decisions of others⦠I will defend the freedom and security of the American people." Are these not the words of a dictator? It's too much! There should be a break at the midway point, in which we could broadcast messages like: You are our servant, not our master! Everything you do, you do with our money! There are three branches of government, and you only represent one! The powers not granted to you are reserved to the states and the people! You are not king of the world! The founders envisioned frequent impeachments! Instead, we must sit and sit and watch a despotic display that seems like an import from the times of Pharaohs and Caesars, or the modern world of dictators and commissars. What does this one fellow, holed up in the White House, living off other people's money, surrounded by sycophants and pollsters, know about the state of the union? The speech was particularly bad this year because we are dealing with a man who has clearly lost perspective. He speaks about his desire for peace even as he ignores the whole world's plea for him not to bomb and kill. He talks about a war on terror but the words Osama Bin Laden never pass his lips. He speaks of all the things the government will do to make us prosperous even as a two-year track record has failed to put a dent in the worsening recession. Indeed, his language seems to reflect a very dangerous state of mind. He habitually speaks about America as identical to the central state, and seems to regard that state as incarnated in himself â the entire apparatus of government embodied in his person. His will is the people's will, the perfect realization of Rousseau's fantasy. But rather than the language of the French Revolution, he uses the cadences of his evangelical constituents, invoking God and quoting old-time hymns. Americans have a hard time recognizing just how fascistically scary all this is because we are surrounded by it all the time, and we read and watch a media that rarely draws attention to it. But foreigners see it. Hardly a day goes by when I don't rec

The Terrorist Threat Integration Center is designed to be one central location where all foreign- and domestically-generated terrorist threat information and intelligence is gathered, assessed and coordinated, the fact sheet said. The center will be composed of elements of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the new Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense. It will be headed by a senior U.S. government official, who will report to the director of Central Intelligence. In addition, the fact sheet provides details on progress made since September 11, 2001, in the global war against terrorism by the FBI, the CIA and the Defense Department, and on the proposed anti-terrorism functions of the new Department of Homeland Security. Following is the text of the fact sheet: (begin fact sheet) The White House Office of the Press Secretary January 28, 2003 STRENGTHENING INTELLIGENCE TO BETTER PROTECT AMERICA Today's Presidential Action -- In his State of the Union Address, President Bush announced a new initiative to better protect America by continuing to close the "seam" between analysis of foreign and domestic intelligence on terrorism. -- The President announced that he has instructed the Director of Central Intelligence, the Director of the FBI, working with the Attorney General, and the Secretaries of Homeland Security and Defense to develop the nation's first unified Terrorist Threat Integration Center [TTIC]. This new center will merge and analyze terrorist-related information collected domestically and abroad in order to form the most comprehensive possible threat picture. -- Since September 11, 2001, our government has been working together and sharing information like never before. The creation of the Terrorist Threat Integration Center is the next phase in the dramatic enhancement of the government's counterterrorism effort. The President has now directed his senior advisors to take the next step in ensuring that intelligence information from all sources is shared, integrated, and analyzed seamlessly -- and then acted upon quickly. -- The administration will ensure that this program is carried out consistently with the rights of Americans. The New Terrorist Threat Integration Center -- Elements of the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI's Counterterrorism Division, the DCI's Counterterrorist Center, and the Department of Defense will form a Terrorist Threat Integration Center to fuse and analyze all-source information related to terrorism. -- The Terrorist Threat Integration Center will continue to close the "seam" between analysis of foreign and domestic intelligence on terrorism. Specifically, it will: - Optimize use of terrorist threat-related information, expertise, and capabilities to conduct threat analysis and inform collection strategies. - Create a structure that ensures information sharing across agency lines. - Integrate terrorist-related information collected domestically and abroad in order to form the most comprehensive possible threat picture. - Be responsible and accountable for providing terrorist threat assessments for our national leadership. -- The Terrorist Threat Integration Center will be headed by a senior U.S. government official, who will report to the Director of Central Intelligence. This individual will be appointed by the Director of Central Intelligence, in consultation with the Director of the FBI and the Attorney General, the Secretary of Defense, and the Secretary of Homeland Security. -- The Terrorist Threat Integration Center will play a lead role in overseeing a national counterterrorism tasking and requirements system and for maintaining shared databases. -- The Terrorist Threat Integration Center will also maintain an up-to-date database of known and suspected terrorists that will be accessible to federal and non-federal officials and entities, as appropriate. -- In order to carry out its responsibilities effectively, the Terrorist Threat Integration Center will have access to all intelligence information -- from raw reports to finished analytic assessments -- available to the U.S. government. -- A senior multi-agency team will finalize the details, design, and implementation strategy for the stand-up of the Terrorist Threat Integration Center. [CTRL] Psychopath Terrorist Bush
-Caveat Lector- Who is the real terrorist in this matter? The man who terrorizes the world by threatening what will surely turn into a GLOBAL "holocaust" as Mandela correctly calls it. A holocaust which is 100% avoidable. -- Forwarded message -- Date: Thu, 30 Jan 2003 14:35:11 -0800 (PST) From: Party of Citizens <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [U-S-A] Mandela is Right! Nelson Mandela is correct that Bush is trying desperately to make his War-Process work against the UN's Peace-Process. The next card he will play to instigate a "holocaust" (another Mandela term) is "the smoking gun excuse". Translated from moron-speak that means, "Iraq is not allowed to make one small mistake, otherwise that is our excuse to start the holocaust". But the the 'smoking gun' rhetoric is propagandistic nonsense. If Iraq had any WMD's of any magnitude, two months of UN searches would have found them. Of course, Bush accomplice, Judas Nix, did not say that because his hidden agenda was to support the Bush War-Process while pretending to the UN that he was leading the Peace-Process. Make no mistake about it. The UN inspections are ALL THAT IS NEEDED. Even a moron can understand that UN is successfully inspecting ALL of Iraq for WMD's and that even if it finds some, they will be few in number and can be easily disposed of. Then Iraq will be free of WMD's and the UN can then MAINTAIN THE PEACE while lifting trade sanctions against the Iraqi people. If there is a war, it will not stop with Iraq. U-S-A must invade Iran because Iran will support the Shia majority in Iran and lead them to the formation of a Shia government in Iraq as in Iran. After Iran and Iraq are both occupied, the chances are very good that "regime change" in Saudi Arabia and Syria will be next on the agenda. So this war will quickly snow ball into a war against all of the Muslim World. One must suspect that is the ultimate purpose behind it. There is absolutely no reason why Iraq cannot have all of its WMD's removed by peaceful means. I have illustrated with the "search and rescue" analogy, how a team of a few thousand inspectors could map out units of .10 square miles and search each and every one in a reasonable period of time. That could also be a post-inspection model for keeping Iraq free of WMD's after the trade sanctions have been lifted. A few surprise visits to these units now and then would do the job. Thus opening doors is sufficient and Iraq has done enough by complying and opening its doors. Blix over-played his hand of treachery as he was stabbing the UN and Peace Process in the back. He is co-ordinating his propaganda machine with that of U-S-A to blacken the international image of Iraq as noncompliant in the Peace Process. Ask the Auditor General of Canada about accounting for inventory which has long ceased to exist. Blix does not want Iraq's past inventory of WMD's accounted for. He wants to use it as rhetoric to rationalize more U-S-A genocide. This past inventory is IRRELEVANT if the present WMD searchers do the job which they are capable of doing. If there are no MMD's now, the job is completed. Likewise the "smoking gun" rhetoric of the Pro-War faction is fatuous. After two months of inspections, the most that will be discovered in future will be small and easily taken care of weaponry. Disposing of it peacefully will be easy for the UN. Of course Bush and his accomplice in fostering mass murder, Blix, want to use any such weaponry as an excuse for war. But it is up to you and the Pro-Peace faction as to which it will be. Micheal Stinson, a Vietnam-era veteran, is co-founder of Take Back The Media. Obviously never a Rush fan, Stinson and his cohorts were content to largely ignore the king of reactionary talk radio -- until he weighed in on the recent anti-war protests, calling participants "anti-American," "anti-capitalist" and "communists," among other terms."He just went too far," said Stinson. "Don't call me anti-American. I served this country."When he decided to go after Limbaugh, Stinson said "we were told we would have to nip at his heels, to start by contacting local advertisers." He ignored that advice, however, and posted a list, complete with contact information, of top sponsors."Within 18 hours, RadioShack (RSH) had folded. Within 36 hours, Amtrak was gone and Bose told us they were no longer advertising on the show," Stinson said.Oddly, Stinson's group is not only telling the rest of the world which companies advertise on Limbaugh's show but, apparently, even the companies themselves. In RadioShack's case, the company maintains that it does not buy ads on Limbaugh's show and any that did air were the result of an "error made by the radio network or local affiliate."RadioShack, the company continued, "strictly adheres to a policy of not intentionally buying advertising space on programs that might be political or socially controversial or that promote any one individual's agenda or point of view."Amtrak says the ads aired as part of a complicated barter deal involving, strange but true, the San Francisco Convention and Visitors Bureau. It does not sponsor political shows and "'in the future...will communicate [that] practice to" other partners.Although Stinson said he has reports of its ads appearing during the show, a spokeswoman for Bose told CBS.MarketWatch that its does not advertise on the program, "and has no intentions of doing so."Other advertisers targeted by Take Back the Media include Darden Restaurants (DRI) Red Lobster chain, Pfizer (PFE) AutoZone (AZO) and online retailer Overstock.com (OSTK) -- none of which would comment.Limbaugh is syndicated by Premiere Radio Networks, a subsidiary of radio behemoth Clear Channel Communications (CCU) . While not addressing whether the show had lost any advertisers as a result of the boycott, Premiere issued the following written statement: "There have been many times in the 15 year history of 'The Rush Limbaugh Program' when national and world events have generated increased listening as well as increased communication with individuals who have opposing points of view," said company president Kraig Kitchin. "The kind of compelling radio that generates opposition also causes Rush Limbaugh's weekly 20 million listeners to tune in that much more and listen longer."That audience number is likely exaggerated (other estimates put it closer to 15 million) but there is no question that Limbaugh is big, big, big and one of medium's biggest single stars. So, can a few scrappy liberals really hurt him?Depends. A lot of radio time is bought pretty much on a commodity basis, with advertisers looking for dayparts and regions rather than specific programming. Many may not even know where their ads appeared until after the fact. And, unless they have given their buyers up-front marching orders to avoid him (already not uncommon), Limbaugh's powerful ratings guarantee a piece of that action. Of course, there are plenty of other options that can deliver similar numbers. Whether or not the boycott works to any meaningful degree is going to depend on how many more advertisers decide it is easier to switch than fight. According to radio buyers, some companies cave almost instantly in the face of even a little negative feedback while others need to experience a truly sustained and widespread level of complaints before they listen.Still, they don't have to get them all to make a difference: If enough advertisers put out the word that the show is a forbidden zone -- and they are not rapidly replaced -- the pro

The alleged victims included their own children, traded between families and used for group sex, as well as children from the Bluebird troop run by Deborah McCuan and the unlicensed day care facility in her home. The McCuans and Kniffens were convicted on all counts in 1983, drawing aggregate prison terms in excess of 1,000 years. The Phelps fled town and disappeared after being charged with 33 counts. Ritual elements in the case were ignored by authorities at the time. (Newton, 1996). In August 1996, a judge overturned the child molestation convictions of Alvin and Deborah McCuan and Scott and Brenda Kniffen.** (Northwest Herald, August 14, 1996). A second intrafamilial child-sex ring was exposed and prosecuted in Bakersfield, with trials continuing into 1985. Five adult defendants were convicted, including: Richard Cox, 47 (14 counts); Ruth Ann Taylor, 31 (14 counts); Anthony Cox, 25 (7 counts); George Cox, 24 (7 counts); and Theresa Cox, 21 (3 counts). Prison terms ranged from 10 to 41 years. (Newton, 1996). Seven defendants in another Bakersfield child-sex ring were convicted in August 1985, with multiple charges including child molestation and endangerment, assault with a deadly weapon, and production of child pornography. Wayne Forsythe, 28, was convicted on 41 separate counts. Other defendants, each convicted on a minimum of 50 counts, included Forsythe's wife, Colleen Dill Forsythe, 26; Ricky Pitts, 31, and his wife Marcella Pitts, 29; Wayne Dill, 26 (Colleen Forsythe's brother); Grace Dill, 50 (mother of Colleen Forsythe and Wayne Dill); and Gina Miller. Cumulative prison sentences in the case came to 2,100 years. (Newton, 1996). Leroy George Stowe III was convicted on 16 counts of child molestation and sentenced to 30 years in March 1985. Shortly after his conviction, victims in the case expanded their disclosures to include graphic descriptions of satanic ritual abuse and murders, involving nine more defendants. In January 1987, Gerardo Gonzales (facing 117 charges) pleaded no contest to one count of molesting a 5-year-old girl, and Rev. Willard Lee Thomas (facing 43 charges) pleaded no contest on two counts, including child endangerment and unlawful sexual intercourse with a 17-year-old girl. Both defendants were released from jail on the basis of time served, and charges against the remaining defendants were dismissed as part of their plea bargain. In February 1987, a California appeals court reversed Leroy Stowe's conviction on 12 of 16 felony counts, with the grounds cited as a technical insufficiency in the pleadings.** (Newton, 1996)." http://www.parc-vramc.tierranet.com/BTC%20RA%20Report.htm and http://www.ra-info.org/resources/ra_cases.shtml "The Fifth Estate" - Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) Network - "This television presentation is a serious, in depth, documentary that will deal with a number of Canadian and world-wide cases of abuse within the Jehovah's Witnesses as well major disclosures from Jehovah's Witness advocates (open and in silhouette) who have been expelled from the organization and some who are still in good standing." http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/forum/thread.aspx?id=44236&site=3 Meet the child molester next door Registered sex offender Jake Goldenflame thinks Megan's Law protects children -- and predators By Janet Kornblum USA TODAY "According to Finkelhor, about 75% of child molesters are white; half are over 30; 75% have been employed; and 95% are male. -Caveat Lector- http://www.newsmaxstore.com/nms/showprod.cfm?did=6&catid=13 &ObjectGroup_id=5 NewsMaxStore.com: Browsing Success/Leadership/Motivation (linqued from Drudge) Note the volume offered by author Roy Masters. If anyone is so inclined, he has offered a video tape outlining his programs. In the very beginning of his presentation, he even admits he was a hypnotist while serving in Her Majesty's imperialist forces. It's interesting how powerful the "power of suggestion" can be, even when the one employing it is up-front about it. The "obermeister" thing translates "master"-fully well, and being named "Roy" just might tend to make someone feel "regal"-ly above the fray. A<:>E<:>R http://www.watchman.org/cults/roymstrs.htm Roy Masters: Foundation of Human Understanding Roy Masters, founder and director, was born Reuben Obermeister to a Jewish family in London, England. At age 15 he worked at his uncle's diamond-cutting factory in Brighton after his father died. As a young boy he became interested in hypnotism. He added to his hypnotism techniques after studying African witchdoctor rites during his apprenticeship at South African diamond mines when he was 18. He came to America in 1949, at age 21, to lecture on diamonds. He legally changed his name to Roy Masters in 1954 (yet never acquired American citizenship) and eventually became a professional hypnotist claiming he could "save people by teaching them self-sufficiency meditative hypnosis." The American Medical Association pressed charges against him for practicing medicine without a license. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail. He likens this "persecution" to the persecution Jesus suffered. He is a self-described "Christian mystic" combining Eastern mysticism and Gnosticism with Christian jargon, yoga, hypnotism and self-help principles. As with other Eastern-oriented cults, The Foundation of Human Understanding teaches that God is both personal and impersonal, advocating an almost pantheistic God. In lieu of dependence on Jesus Christ for salvation, Masters teaches dependence on his meditation techniques. He teaches that mankind is inherently good, thus there is no need for salvation or a savior. All problems man encounters can be resolved through self effort. "No form of outer assistance can substitute for inner direction. Direction must come always from within. Moved by the spirit of intuition, we move without excitement, effort or strain. The more we exercise our dependency upon the Within, the stronger this relationship becomes, and we know it to be Grace," (How To Keep Your Mind Well, p. 165, Foundation Press, 1971). Though he claims to have been saved by the blood of Christ, he states that "one of the biggest curses in Christendom is the false idea that Jesus is God." According to the late Dr. Walter Martin, the Foundation does not mention the Holy Spirit in any of its publications (The New Cults, p. 310). Instead of relying on the Holy Spirit for comfort and guidance, followers are taught to rely on themselves (made possible through successful meditation). During the meditative process, subjects are taught to surrender all disbelief and to relinquish control to Masters. The Foundation of Human Understanding headquarters is in Los Angeles, California where Masters' self-help brand of religion is offered to an audience of 3 million people via his national radio program, "How Your Mind Can Keep You Well." In 1982, about 2,000 disciples followed Masters to a 378-acre ranch in Oregon. He holds seminars and weekend retreats at the ranch and is currently establishing Evelyn Street School, a Foundation institute for kindergarten through 12th grade there. In 1989, Masters claimed to have 150,000 people on his mailing list. Over 100,00 have purportedly participated in his courses. His meditation exercise is taught on three cassettes and a book for a total cost of $25.00. Participants in his week-long seminars pay $1,200 and $50 for one-day seminars held across the country. Masters says he wants to be remembered in the same category as Moses, Jesus, the apostles, Buddha, Gandhi, Martin Luther King and John F. Kennedy. © Copyright 2000 Watchman Fellowship, Inc.. [CTRL] Is George W. Bush an imperialist?
-Caveat Lector- http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=30739 Is George W. Bush an imperialist? Patrick J. Buchanan Posted: January 29, 2003 1:00 a.m. Eastern Though Iraq does not threaten us, has not attacked us, cannot defeat us, and does not want war with us, the United States is about to invade and occupy that country. If we do, it will be the first purely imperial war in our history, a war launched to reshape the domestic politics and foreign policy of another nation to conform to our own. A war to convert Iraq into a vassal state in the Middle East is something the War Party has sought for a decade. Sept. 11 gave it the opening to foist its agenda on an outraged and untutored president. But does George W. Bush share their vision? Has he, too, come to believe in the need for an American empire? Does he see in his mind's eye a U.S.-occupied Iraq â allied with Turkey, Israel and Jordan â ordering Syria's President Bashar Assad to pull his 35,000 troops out of Lebanon, so Sharon can go back in and settle scores with Hezbollah? Does he share the War Party's vision of an Iran surrounded by U.S. air power in Turkey, Iraq, Kuwait, the Gulf, Afghanistan and Central Asia being ordered to destroy its missiles and nuclear reactors, or face U.S. attack? Sharon sees it. Anticipating a U.S. occupation of Iraq, he has called on us to smash Iran next. After that, Libya. But, again, the question remains: Has George W. Bush himself become an imperialist? Is the War Party dream of a Middle East and Persian Gulf where the United States is the hegemonic power that dictates to every capital and brooks no dissent now his vision as well? To be blunt, is there a Bush-Sharon Grand Strategy for a Middle East where all resistance to U.S. hegemony is broken and all opposition to Israel's occupation of Arab lands ends? After Iraq, the War Party will demand that Bush confront Syria, Iran and Saudi Arabia. Will he? Or will he do as his father did after Desert Storm? Try to compel Israel to get off Palestinian lands and accede to a just peace with the Palestinian people? President Bush contends that all he demands of Iraq is surrender of its weapons of mass destruction. If that is true, as it was true that all his father demanded was Iraq's eviction from Kuwait, then there is simply an overlap of Bush policy and Israeli policy, and not some grand alliance or agreed-upon strategic agenda. Only after U.S troops enter Baghdad, however, will we learn the answers to these questions. But if Bush is not an imperialist, why are we about to invade Iraq? Bush's case for war: Saddam is a murderous tyrant with a grudge against America who has gassed his own people and has weapons of mass destruction that will be used on us, or his neighbors, or given to terrorists. Let us disarm Iraq while we can, lest we confront a situation in the Gulf identical to what we confront on the Korean peninsula: one of the world's most dangerous dictators wielding the world's most dangerous weapons. The case against war: Iraq had no role in the anthrax attack or 9-11. No terrorist attack of the last decade is traceable to Iraq. Iraq has invited in U.N. inspectors and told us to send CIA agents to accompany them. Not since 1990 has Iraq attacked a neighbor. No matter how evil Saddam may be, he has been contained, and none of his neighbors fear him or want us to invade. Moreover, Saddam has three or four doubles who travel with him in a fleet of Mercedes, and he sleeps in a different bed every night. This is not a martyr â this is a survivor. Why would he attack a superpower when it would mean the certain destruction of him, his sons, his dynasty, his legacy, his monuments and his palaces, leaving him in the history books, not as another Saladin, but as the dumbest Arab of them all? My view: When George Bush began his fulminations about the Axis of Evil, pre-emptive strikes and "regime change," he had not thought it all through, but has now become a prisoner of his own oratory. After all that bellicosity, he simply cannot be the second George Bush to send an army to the Gulf and order it home with Saddam still in power. And with all those troops over there primed for war, would they not mock a commander in chief who declares that Hans Blix will do the job? As of today, it would take greater courage for George Bush not to go to war than to go to war. And so, unless Saddam departs or is ousted by the Ides of March, we are going to war. The War Party, it would appear, wins this round. www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER == CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list. Proselytizing propagandic screeds are unwelcomed. Here you see Tony Blair at Prime Minister's Questions yesterday, spelling out in very clear terms what is going to happen next. Add that to what he said in October 2002 and you have some of what I said in my last reply to you. He, Bush and the other criminals REALLY believe they are on a mission to create a much better world. Nothing will stop them. "This is a moment to seize. The kaleidoscope has been shaken, the pieces are in flux, soon they will settle again. Before they do let us reorder this world." - Tony Blair October 2, 2001 "MY WAR ON THE WORLD Jan 30 2003 Blair: We'll fight all who pose a threat By James Hardy, Political Editor WILD-EYED Tony Blair warned yesterday that he was ready to wage war on the world. The Prime Minister told jeering Labour MPs his next target after Iraq was North Korea and the fight would go on until the world was a safer place. Anti-war MPs heckled Mr Blair during Commons question time as he desperately tried to justify military action on Saddam Hussein. They shouted "who's next?" and "when do we stop?" in one of the most open shows of defiance since the crisis erupted. A finger-jabbing Mr Blair turned on them: "After we deal with Iraq we do, yes, through the United Nations have to confront North Korea about its weapons programme. "We have to confront those companies and individuals trading in weapons of mass destruction. "We stop when the threat to our security is properly and fully dealt with." Labour MPs are growing increasingly restless about the full-scale rush to war. Left-winger Lynne Jones accused the PM of only identifying Iraq as a threat after George Bush grouped it with Iran and Kim Jong Il's regime in North Korea as an "axis of evil". The Premier snapped: "Precisely because he was a threat there have been thousands of British forces down in the Gulf the whole time flying over the no-fly zones. "Precisely because he was a threat, we have had to impose a sanctions regime on Iraq. "Way before the axis of evil speech, at the very first meeting I had with President Bush back in February 2001 I said that weapons of mass destruction is an issue and we have to confront them." Cabinet minister Clare Short renewed her warning that military action must have full UN backing. "We should all be clear that we unite behind the UN, and it's invincibly strong this time, and that Saddam Hussein knows that we're not going away and he can't push the inspectors back and stop them operating like he did before," she said on BBC radio. "And then we can minimise the risks of war, but we have to be willing, if necessary, to take some military action to back up the authority of the UN. "We should deal with it in a way that minimises any risk of further suffering to the people of Iraq." The Commons bust-up followed a day of Government confusion over alleged links between Iraq and al-Qaeda. President Bush said in his State of the Union speech that intelligence reports had shown extensive co-operation between the two. Downing Street yesterday initially claimed Iraq was "sheltering" al- Qaeda operatives. But at Question Time, the PM appeared to row back. He said: "We do know of links between al-Qaeda and Iraq. We cannot be sure of the exact extent of those links." The Foreign Office added: "It would be hard to imagine that this was happening without the knowledge and acquiescence of the regime." http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/allnews/page.cfm? objectid=12585172&method=full&site\

The letter was purported to Mr. Rosenthal about some plants that were delivered to the HRC, but the agent was unable to say if Mr. Watts had written the letter, or if it had ever been printed out and sent.A witness from the IRS, Pamela Woo, testified as to a phone number they linked to Ken Hayes, the executive director of the Harm Reduction Center and another of Mr. Rosenthals indicted co-conspirators. The records indicated that Mr. Rosenthal had called him on three different days, for a total the defense pointed out -- of no more than nine minutes. They also produced four months of phone records showing several dozen calls to the Harm Reduction Center, with an average call length of two minutes.Christopher Fay, a special agent of the DEA, testified about his undercover buy of 400+ small starter plants from the Harm Reduction Center. He said he had no way to know where the plants had come from, and had made no inquiries. He had never seen Mr. Rosenthal before, and had not seen him at the HRC. He had not counted the plants or determined if they had roots. The case agent for the DEA, John Pickett then told the court that he had counted the plants and checked for roots. Defense counsel Robert Eye noted in cross examination that there were at least two types of growing medium present, which Agent Pickett admitted was characteristic of different growers. He further conceded that he had no way to know if any of the plants purchased had come from Mr. Rosenthal, and that no documents had been seized in any of the searches that tied Mr. Rosenthal to the plants the undercover agent had purchased. The final witness for the prosecution, a special agent of the DEA, will return to the stand first thing on Thursday, to conclude his testimony about plants he seized from the Harm Reduction Center during the February 12, 2002 raids, and with that, the prosecution will rest. The defense will then give its opening argument, which they have reserved from the start of the trial. They plan on calling an expert witness, Dan Weaver, who will dispute the number of plants the DEA claims to have seized from both Mr. Rosenthals warehouse and the Harm Reduction Center. The prosecution contends that Mr. Rosenthal was involved in managing the cultivation of small marijuana starter plants, or clones, at the HRC. In addition to the expert witness, Nate Miley, formerly of the Oakland City Council and now an Alameda County Supervisor, will appear on behalf of Mr. Rosenthal. He is expected to testify that Mr. Rosenthals was completely open with city officials about his marijuana growing activities. The defense has also asked to put on the stand several character witnesses, which the presiding judge in the case, Charles Breyer, refused to allow. They include Keith Stroup, the executive director of NORML, the National Organization to Reform Marijuana Laws, who was to testify about Mr. Rosenthals longstanding com

It was a resignation speech of the look-back-in-wonderment genre. Last Tuesday John Herron formally announced his intention to step down from the Senate. The former Howard Government minister declared: "I pay tribute also to the wonderful democracy we have in Australia; we have no secrets." Certainly Dr Herron's wish to quit the Senate to take up a diplomatic posting came as no surprise - he is expected to become Australia's ambassador to Ireland and the Vatican next year. However, despite the obvious bonhomie of the occasion, the Queensland Liberal's claim that Australian democracy has "no secrets" is anything but a truism. What about the Masons? In effect, the Masonic Lodge arrived in Australia around the time of the First Fleet. Freemasonry was a secret secular society that evolved in the Middle Ages and was opposed by most organised religions, especially the Catholic Church. Its influence was spread by colonisation, particularly in what became known as the British Empire. In this increasingly transparent age, there are few secrets. Much is known about business, churches, the trade union movement, politics, the professions and more besides. However, we know all but nothing about the Masons. Moreover, it is only in recent years that Freemasonry has released information about itself. In Australia, this has been most evident in New South Wales due to media statements by the organisation and publications by the Masonic Historical Society of NSW (see uglnsw.freemasonry.org.au). Without question, Freemasonry is not the organisation it once was in the 1950s, when membership peaked at close to 400,000. Yet, without doubt, the Lodge was once very influential indeed. According to Grahame Cumming's Freemasonry: Australia's Prime Ministers (Masonic Historical Society, 1994), most of Australia's politically conservative prime ministers up to the early 1970s were members of the Masonic Lodge. Namely Edmund Barton, George Reid, Joseph Cook, Stanley Melbourne Bruce, Earle Page, Robert Menzies, Arthur Fadden, John McEwen, John Gorton and William McMahon. Now, for the most part, this lot was both able and busy. So the question to be asked is: what were they doing in the Masonic Lodge? Especially in view of the fact that Freemasonry membership involved participation in a number of unusual rituals: the rolled-up trouser leg on initiation, the secret handshake whereby (apparently) the thumb of one Lodge member makes contact with the second knuckle of another, the wearing of ceremonial aprons at meetings and so on. Presumably Messrs Barton, Reid, Bruce, Menzies and Gorton did not endure - at one time or another - such rituals for the fun of it. It can only be assumed that they were active Freemasons, for a time at least, because they believed in the cause of the Lodge. Which was precisely what? Well, alas, we do not really know. Sure, Freemasonry supports various charitable causes. But so do such secular service groups as Rotary and Lions. So there must have been more to Lodge membership than good works. But what? In Australia, no former Freemason has written a "tell-all" of the once-a-communist or once-a-Catholic kind. What's more, there has been very little written about the Lodge by outsiders. The most notable exception is the Sydney-based mathematician/philosopher James Franklin. See, for example, his article "Catholics Versus Masons" in the Journal of the Australian Catholic Historical Society, 1999. The late Allan Martin wrote a fine two-volu

[CTRL] The Anti-Europeans
-Caveat Lector- http://www.amconmag.com/01_27_03/feature.html The Anti-Europeans Anti-Americanism has an evil twin: the neocon campaign to malign the Westâs other democracies. By Stuart Reid If Thomas Babington Macaulay gave us the Whig interpretation of history, Victor Davis Hanson has given us the Marvel Comics interpretation, with added Thucydides. (Hanson is a classicist and doesnât care who knows it.) For the past year, this sixth-generation grape farmer from Selma, Calif. has been writing the same piece, week after unforgiving week, for National Review Online. At the risk of simplifying, it goes something like this: Churchill good, Chamberlain bad; Democracy good, Tyranny bad; Israel good, Palestine bad; America good, Europe bad; Cowpokes good, Redskins bad; and, listen up, if it hadnât been for âmuscular and unsophisticated Americans,â you Euroweenies would now be speaking Kraut. But Hanson is not just a classicist and a grape farmer; he is also visiting professor of military history at the U.S. Naval Academy, and he knows what he wants. In the name of all that is holy and decent and democratic, in the name of Wal-Mart and Wall Street, he wants us to square our jaws, narrow our eyes, slap on the sun screen, dust off the depleted uranium, and spend $60 billion on a war with Iraq. All things considered, most Europeans would rather pass on this one, as Saddam Hussein has never done them any harm and intends them none; and anyway people might get killed: not Americans, perhaps, but people all the same. Hanson finds this response repulsive. Who the devil do these Europeans think they are? Have they no gratitude? Can they not recognize âhistoryâs greatest civilizationâ when it is staring them in the face and asking for no more than a bit of unconditional love and maybe a spare infantry battalion or two? America offers Europe âSex and the Cityâ as it were and the nuclear umbrella, yet the Europeans become churlish when asked to put their lives on the line and persist in taking a negative view of Manifest Destiny. Hanson is without doubt the best buy in Neocon City. In October, he poured out his frustration and grief in Commentary (âGoodbye Europe?â), but alas fell at the first paragraph: â... few things can have been more dismaying to Americans than the attitude adopted by many of our closest European allies, whose sympathy for the loss of life [on 9/11] was quickly replaced by skepticism ... toward American motives and American policy.â Be dismayed no longer, Americans. Sympathy for the loss of life was absolutely not replaced by skepticism. It was all along accompanied by skepticism. Sympathy remains in place, but (and please forgive me for going over old ground) Europeans are convinced that instead of declaring war on terrorismâa war he could not possibly win and which, after 14 months of military fiascoes, he is manifestly losingâthe President of the United States should have devoted his energies to hunting down and hanging the murderers and their agents. What a bunch of wimps, eh? Almost as bad as the Canadians. No wonder Hansonâs contempt for Europe is shared by many red-blooded (though for the most part unbloodied) Americans. After reading tens of thousands of words from the Weekly Standard, National Review, Commentary, and Policy Review, even Slate, the message I get from the War Party is that Europeâwith the possible exception of Britainâis morally and intellectually bankrupt; that, having been exhausted by the wars of the last century, she is now too weak and too timid to confront major (or even minor) external threats; that she is envious of Americaâs military might and material abundance (which accounts for all those foaming anti-Americans); and that European Union itself is âsocialistâ (a word used by the New Right in America to describe any nation that provides a public health service and observes the major feasts of the Christian calendar). Europe is also, of course, venomously and congenitally anti-Semitic. To read some of the more emotional neoconsâCharles Krauthammer, George F. Will, David Gelernter, and Michael Ledeen, for exampleâone might conclude that it is only a matter of time before âEuropeansâ revert to form and, at the very least, start forcing Jews to scrub the streets. In a muddled piece in the Weekly Standard last autumn, David Gelernter wrote of Europeâs âcasual, endemic anti-Semitism, her politically, financially, and masochistically rewarding fascination with Muslim states who despise her. â¦â Elsewhere in the same piece he asserted, âEurope wants to hate herself ⦠but not for the sin of killing Jews; for the sin of killing Europeans.â And here is the snarling Michael Ledeen in NRO: âI always marveled at the Europeansâ ability to praise Hitler as a man of peace, and get terribly annoyed at Czechoslovakia for denying the poor man his richly deserved peace of mind ⦠by existing in his Lebensraum.â
[CTRL] How Will Iraq Strike Back?
-Caveat Lector- http://www.amconmag.com/01_27_03/cover.html How Will Iraq Strike Back? Rather than making the world more safe, an attack on Saddam could put Americans here at home in harmâs way. By Richard K. Betts President Bush seems confident that his war against Iraq will be easier than his fatherâs, or at least that we can be sure to fight it on our own terms. But why should Saddam Hussein do us that favor? The hour is late for confronting strategic confusion, but better late than never. The United States has painted itself as well as Iraq into a corner. The case for preventive war rests on two crucial errors: understating the risk that an assault on Iraq will trigger a counterattack on American civilians, and, when that risk is admitted, conflating it with the threat of unprovoked attack by Iraq in the future. Most Americans take for granted that if the war proves bloodier than the optimists expect, the price will be paid by the military or people in the region. If an invasion succeeds, however, Saddam Hussein will have no reason to withhold his best parting shotâwhich could be the release of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) inside the United States. Such a counterattack against civilians could make the death toll of Sept. 11 look small. Washington has done little to prepare the country for this possibility. When administration spokesmen do admit this danger, they misread it as reinforcing their case, as if it simply demonstrates the same threat they believe requires preventive war. There is a world of difference, however, between the odds that Iraq will fight back if we strike first and the odds that Iraq will strike without provocation in the future. The administration does not admit that if our attack triggers Iraqi retaliation, we will have brought the disaster on ourselves. It is not quite too late to ponder the Prussian statesman Otto von Bismarckâs characterization of preventive war: âsuicide from fear of death.â An invasion to get rid of Saddam Hussein aims to do what no government has ever done before: destroy a regime that possesses WMD. Twice before countries with WMD fought each other but only in skirmishesâChina and the Soviet Union on the Ussuri River in 1969 and India and Pakistan over Kargil in 2000. In those limited clashes neither sideâs leadership faced its own demise. The difference this time has not been digested by pro-war strategists. All the way through the passage of congressional authorization for war, the greatest danger a preventive assault might pose to Americans went almost unmentioned. Attention focused instead on less immediate, less likely, and less dangerous threats. The hawksâ argument for war focused on the future danger that Iraq will get nuclear weapons. But the biological weapons Iraq almost certainly has already are bad enough. The worst estimates of U.S. vulnerability may be grossly exaggerated, but vulnerability is high in any case. A 1993 Office of Technology Assessment study saw the possibility of one to three million fatalities from anthrax delivered by aerosol from a single plane over the Washington, D.C. area. Even if medical readiness makes a realistic figure only one percent of that figure, casualties would be more than triple those of Sept. 11. Iraq could also have bio-engineered pathogens for which no defense is available. Chemical weapons would be less destructive than biological, but they too could exact a devastating toll. Is Iraqi counterattack really plausible? Hawks worry that Saddam will use WMD or give them to terrorists in the future, even if we threaten him with devastating retaliation. If he would cut his own throat when not provoked, he will certainly lash out with anything he has when we go for his jugular and his back is against the wallâand Washington wants him to go to the wall. Saddam will not go gently if he has nothing left to lose. The risk that has absorbed commentators, however, is the vulnerability of U.S. invasion forces, or local supporters like Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait, as if the danger is only that Iraq would set off WMD within the region. But if the military assault to overthrow the Iraqi regime succeeds, there is no reason to doubt Saddamâs intention to use biological weapons where they would hurt Americans the most. Then the only question is whether he will have the capability to carry out the intent. Maybe not. Maybe Saddam is not crafty enough to figure out how to strike the American homeland. Maybe Iraqi intelligence is too incompetent to smuggle biological weapons in and set them off. Maybe underlings would disobey orders to do so. Maybe terrorists to whom they might subcontract the job would bungle it. Maybe American forces could find and neutralize all of Iraqâs WMD before they could be detonated. But it is reckless to bank on maybes. We have given Saddam more than enough time to concoct retaliation, since he has been on notice for months that we are coming. The Bush

-Caveat Lector- MAKE WAR, NOT PEACE By Eric S. Margolis 27 January 2003 NEW YORK - Time Magazine Europe asked its readers what nation posed the greatest threat to world peace. Of the 268,000 respondents(as of this writing): 7.8% replied North Korea; 8.9% named Iraq; and a shocking 83.3% said the United States. Good work, President Bush. The Time poll mirrors feeling around the globe, with the exceptions of Israel and Britain. American neo-conservatives, however, will dismiss this poll as just another example of European wimpiness, irrelevance, and anti- American prejudice. So will Bush and his hawkish entourage, who have made plain they don't care what the rest of the world thinks so long as America and Israel get their way. When advised of growing opposition across Europe to an unprovoked US attack on Iraq, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld summed up the thinking of Administration hawks by dismissing such concerns as coming from 'old Europe.' In contrast, France's able foreign minister, Dominique de Villepin, warned his nation would delay, or might even veto, efforts by the Bush Administration to strong-arm the Security Council into a rushed war vote against Iraq. Germany, China, and Russia backed France. American rightwingers harbor particular venom for France. Americans expect their allies to be obedient. While Washington constantly hectors Europe to take more international responsibility, Europeans are not expected to disagree with American policy. To Americans, France often appears downright insubordinate. Ever since General De Gaulle, Paris has refused to take orders or accept being a junior ally the US. Europeans see the Mideast very differently from North Americans, thanks to their long experience in the region, and their media, which provides far more accurate, balanced and diverse reporting on the region than North America's often biased press. Americans accuse the French of arrogance, rudeness, and illusions of grandeur, which is sometimes true - and certainly true of waiters in Paris. French rightly accuse some American politicians - epitomized for Europeans by President George Bush - of being arrogant and ignorant, as well as loud, uncultured, impatient, and dreadfully lacking in those two fundamentals of civilized education, geography and history. French intellectuals warn US TV and movies are spreading 'cretinization' to Europe's youth, a charge easily confirmed by an evening's viewing of North American TV. American neo-conservatives know Europeans sneer at them as dangerous ideological crackpots, the 2003 version of 1930's militant Marxists. The neo- con's riposte (oops, a French word) 'we saved you in two world wars. Now we have to do it again. You're no better than those wimpy, socialist Canadians.' These chest-thumpers are unaware that without France's military intervention in the War of Independence, there would be no United States. Or that Germany was effectively defeated in 1917 by Britain and France when the US foolishly intervened, thus preventing a fair, negotiated peace that would have prevented the evil Versailles Treaty, the incubator of Adolf Hitler, and World War II. Most Americans believe their nation alone defeated Germany in World War II. Not so. Stalin's Soviet Union defeated the Third Reich, destroying 100 German divisions in titanic battles on the Eastern front that made D-Day seem a minor battle. By the time US forces landed in Europe, Germany was almost defeated, without a navy, air force or oil. Smirking Gallophobes love to revile French for being faint-hearted fighters in World War II. But France lost 210,000 dead fighting the mighty Germans. The Maginot Line worked as planned, contrary to popular belief. America's great fortress, Corregidor, failed miserably. America lost 292,000 dead in the war, including both European and Pacific Theaters, where the US totally and brilliantly defeated Japan. Poland lost more soldiers than America, 320,000; even unwarlike Romania lost 300,000 men. Europe, including the USSR, lost at least 13 million soldiers and 25 million civilians killed in World War II. When Russia open its secret files, the numbers may oar. 'Wimpish' Europeans know something more than Americana about the cost of war. Take the damage of 9/11 and multiply it 1,500 times and you get a taste of the devastation caused by World War II. Europeans still have fresh memories of their brutal, futile colonial wars. America, about to embark in Iraq on its first large-scale colonial adventure since it annexed Cuba and the Philippines in 1899, has forgotten, and seems fated to relearn, the cost of empire. By and large Europeans like and admire Americans, as do most people around the globe. There are some chronic America haters in Britain and France, to be sure, on both right and left, but in general Europeans are opposed to the unilateralist, aggressive policies of the Bush White House, not to America. But it's also plain, Bush's thirst for war and oil are cul

[CTRL] A Byrd in Hand Bruns the Bush
-Caveat Lector- JANUARY 29, 2003 http://www.thehill.com/eisele/012903.aspx Albert Eisele On the Record Senator Byrd takes on the White House You have to get up pretty early to get the jump on Sen. Robert Byrd. Even at 85, the West Virginia Democrat and now senior member of the Senate showed up half an hour early for an 8 a.m. meeting with reporters at the St. Regis Hotel on a frigid Friday morning. The occasion was Washingtons longest-running power breakfast for print journalists no TV or radio types invited that the Christian Science Monitor has sponsored since 1966. Occasionally, the group grills newsmakers at lunch or dinner or, as with White House political guru Karl Rove two days earlier, at an afternoon tea. Fortunately, David Cook, the avuncular successor to Godfrey (Budge) Sperling Jr., who hosted some 3,200 such sessions before retiring last year, was on hand to greet Byrd. Like an old lion in winter, the white-maned Byrd made it clear that he will brook no challenge to Senate prerogatives from Rove or from Roves boss, or from the newly empowered Senate Republican leadership. As the bleary-eyed reporters straggled in and 18th century English monarchs looked on from the walls, Byrd delivered a 15-minute tutorial on constitutional history that showed why The Almanac of American Politics once said he may come closest to the kind of senator the Founding Fathers had in mind. Byrd, who was elected to the Senate in 1958 after six years in the House and who has served both as majority and minority leader, lamented that, because neither members of Congress nor the public understands the proper role of the legislative branch, many Americans now look to the president as the source of all authority. In the days since Sept. 11, 2001, we have seen power shift to the executive branch, he declared. Without a Congress willing to stand up for its prerogatives, and without a public that understands the importance of equal branches of government and separation of powers, that shift will gain the speed of a downhill truck. Byrd issued a blistering broadside against his Senate and House colleagues and much of the media for not opposing the Bush administrations bull- headed rush to war in Iraq without seeking the support of world opinion or finding conclusive evidence of Saddam Husseins noncompliance with United Nations disarmament demands. Declaring himself amazed at the cowardice on the part of some of our members, Byrd called it absolutely disgraceful that we have not used that great force, the Senate, to inform the people, to debate this great issue, to advise the administration, to create a better understanding of why the administration is asking the American people to send its boys and girls off to war. Byrd warned that Bush has thrust the United States into a new and unflattering posture on the world stage [where] America the peacemaker is now seen as the bully on the block. Reminded that Rove (who drew some 70 reporters compared to about 40 for Byrd) told the same group that Americans support Bushs hard line on Iraq, Byrd said the president has yet to present clear and compelling evidence that Iraq is hiding weapons of mass destruction. As a result, he said, I dont think the American people understand why were going to war. Byrd insisted that he isnt acting out of partisan motivations, so help me God, and predicted that Congress would rally behind the president, as it did for his father in 1991, should he make a convincing case for a preemptive strike against Iraq. If not, President Bush may find the dean of the Senate leading the next antiwar protest at the White House gates. Albert Eisele is editor of The Hill. Forwarded for your information. -Caveat Lector- HoustonChronicle.com -- http://www.HoustonChronicle.com | Section: Local & State http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/printstory.hts/metropolitan/1756589 Jan. 29, 2003, 2:08PM Senator: Texas' budget cash problems get worse Associated Press AUSTIN -- The state needs even more cash than first expected to balance the 2003 budget, a development that Senate Finance Committee Chairman Teel Bivins today called a "bombshell" in an already tough fiscal session. Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn delivered the news to lawmakers in a letter Tuesday, said Bivins, R-Amarillo. "The reason I called it a bombshell is because it was a surprise," Bivins said. The state's $114 billion two-year budget uses a combination of sources to pay for programs and services, including cash from state tax revenue, income from investment funds and federal money. The latest problem does not change the anticipated $1.8 billion fiscal year shortfall. But it is significant because it changes the amount of cash lawmakers must find to plug the hole by Aug. 31. The $1.8 billion shortfall is mainly due to lower than expected sales tax collections and cost overruns in some programs. The state typically takes out loans -- called tax and revenue anticipation notes -- to cover projected costs. Officials anticipate there will be enough tax collections to pay the loans back by the end of the fiscal year. Because sales tax revenue is not what was expected this time, there isn't enough cash to repay the loans. Some cost overruns in programs like Medicaid could be paid with emergency appropriations of revenue expected for the next budget. But the repayment of the loans -- some say as much as $1.4 billion, $700 million more than first thought -- cannot be put off. If the cash isn't found by Aug. 31, the state would have a deficit, which is prohibited by the state constitution. Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst said he hopes $700 million from cuts ordered at state agencies plus borrowing $700 million from state funds added to $400 million in cash the state has will be enough to cover the shortfall, including paying off the loans this fiscal year. The borrowed money from the funds will be paid back with revenue when the new fiscal year begins Sept. 1, he said. Strayhorn has predicted slow tax revenue, and high expenses will cause another $8.1 billion shortfall in the 2004-05 budget. Some finance committee members questioned the comptroller's office's timing, saying Strayhorn should have told lawmakers about the budget problems sooner than this month. Some Democrats suggested politics played a role as Republicans swept every statewide office in the November election. "We don't need any smoke and mirrors or hiding the ball on us for whatever reason," said Sen. Robert Duncan, R-Lubbock. Deputy Comptroller Billy Hamilton said the agency wanted to count as many sales tax receipts as possible before revealing the revenue picture to lawmakers. Later, Strayhorn defended her revenue estimate. "We told the people exactly what we knew, precisely when we knew it," she said. [CTRL] Memo to Washington
-Caveat Lector- Arab News SAUDI ARABIA'S FIRST ENGLISH LANGUAGE DAILY http://www.arabnews.com/Article.asp?ID=22357 Memo to Washingtons most powerful people By Norman Solomon, Special to Arab News Published on 30 January 2003 OK, lets review the main points. A basic PR problem remains. While youre in a hurry to launch an all-out war on Iraq, the main obstacle is that a large majority of Americans dont feel the rush. Uncle Sams usual carrots and sticks have a long way to go at the UN Security Council. The big disappointment of January is that some key allies havent caved yet. No need to belabor the recent polling numbers. Newsweek did a national sampling of opinion midway through the month, and you went into a funk when you read the Associated Press summary: "Most Americans want the United States to take more time seeking a peaceful solution in Iraq rather than moving quickly into a military confrontation." The next sentence was even more cautionary: "By 60 percent to 35 percent, people in the Newsweek poll... said they would prefer that the Bush administration allow more time to find an alternative to war." And, whats more, "a majority would be opposed should this country act without the support of the United Nations and had no more than one or two allies." But before you panic at the specter of peace breaking out, take a long cold look at another finding: "Support for a military option would be strong, 81 percent, if the United States were to act with full allied support and the backing of the UN Security Council." Such full support and backing is likely to be unnecessary. At home, appreciable war fever is available for inflammation below the surface, and an initial large majority of domestic public opinion will not be needed to get the war job done. It may be possible to chip away at recalcitrant citizens by portraying the obstinate allies as mischievous or worse. Some media coverage has been apt. A quiet cheer is in order for your friends at The Washington Post, where strong editorial support for a righteous war often runs parallel with news articles. When the Post recently reported on its front page that France signaled plans to "wage a major diplomatic fight, including possible use of its veto power" on the Security Council, the newspaper informed readers that France and other balking countries had just engaged in "a diplomatic version of an ambush." An undertone of allied flirtation with treachery is a helpful media spin at a critical moment. It provides a wisp of underdog status for American diplomats as they salvage what support they can and preen themselves as courageous global visionaries a posture that can augur well for the aftermath to a State of the Union text swaddling the presidents war cries in oodles of lofty rhetoric. The Cabinet and sub-cabinet heavy hitters naturally pile on with a renewed blitz of network talk shows. One way or another, they explain that the USAs war train is leaving the station, and other nations would do well to hop on board. Not many pundits emphasize that the war dealers in Washington have, as an ace in the hole, the ability to begin largescale bloodshed and then let the devil take the hindmost. When warfare becomes a fait accompli with high-tech missiles suddenly flying and with American soldiers killing and even dying the publics numbers quickly shift away from antiwar sentiment (at least for a while). Its not necessary to consolidate a supportive majority before war gets rolling. Its sufficient to have enough people cowed and numbed so that opposition to starting the war stays within tolerable bounds. As thoroughly modern masters of war, you comprehend the captivating power of television to simultaneously mesmerize and anesthetize. Once the Pentagons carefully screened video clips are streaming onto TV sets in wartime, a kind of intoxication sets in; the journalists seem to feel the rush, and they pass it along. The media pace is frenetic, with adrenaline pumping; the new conditions of carnage are exactly suitable to play to the US governments unrivaled strength its capacity to inflict massive and overpowering violence. And, helped along by media spin, most people back home can be induced to revere the inevitable winner. "A conqueror is always a lover of peace," the Prussian general Karl von Clausewitz remarked two centuries ago. The more you yearn to launch a war, the more you must strive to burnish your image as someone who craves peace. On your terms, of course. To view this item online, visit http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=30739 Wednesday, January 29, 2003 Is George W. Bush an imperialist? Posted: January 29, 2003 1:00 a.m. Eastern By Patrick J. Buchanan © 2003 Creators Syndicate, Inc. Though Iraq does not threaten us, has not attacked us, cannot defeat us, and does not want war with us, the United States is about to invade and occupy that country. Does he see in his mind's eye a U.S.- occupied Iraq allied with Turkey, Israel and Jordan ordering Syria's President Bashar Assad to pull his 35,000 troops out of Lebanon, so Sharon can go back in and settle scores with Hezbollah? This is not a martyr this is a survivor. Related Offer: Buchanan's latest book is here! "The Death of the West" is an eye-opening exposé of how immigration invasions are endangering America. [CTRL] No Worm In the Bottle, Georgie (Rot-Gut Again!)
-Caveat Lector- Print this article | Close this window No proof of Iraq, al-Qaeda links: analysts By Julian Borger, Michael Howard and Richard Norton-Taylor January 31 2003 President George Bush used his State of the Union address to paint a terrifying picture for the American people of another attack like September 11 - but this time with chemical, biological or nuclear weapons. The British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, reinforced the message, telling the House of Commons: "We do know of links between al-Qaeda and Iraq. We cannot be sure of the exact extent of those links." However, a number of well-placed sources in the British public service insisted there is no intelligence suggesting such a link. "While we have said there may possibly be individuals in the country [Iraq] we have never said anything to suggest specific links between al-Qaeda and Saddam Hussein," said one. Establishing the link is essential to persuading the public that Iraq represents an imminent threat, and Mr Bush insisted that hard evidence in the shape of "intelligence sources, secret communications, and statements by people now in custody" proved the connection was real. But the intelligence analysts in the US and Britain on whose work Mr Bush's claim was supposedly based say the connections are tangential at best, and the available evidence falls far short of proving a secret relationship between Baghdad and Osama bin Laden. One intelligence source in Washington, who has seen CIA material on the link, described the case as "soft" and "squishy". That case relies heavily on a man called Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a Jordanian member of the al-Qaeda leadership who was wounded in the leg in the US- led bombing of Afghanistan. In late 2001, according to US intelligence sources, he sought medical treatment in Iran but was deported and fled to Baghdad, where his leg was amputated. Telephone calls he made to his family in Jordan were intercepted. The question is whether Saddam Hussein's regime knew who he was and whether it offered him any assistance. "Yes, we have him telling his family I'm here in Baghdad in hospital, but he's not saying: 'And by the way, I'm getting all this help from Saddam'," a well-informed source in Washington said. According to Jordanian intelligence, Zarqawi left Baghdad after his surgery and travelled to northern Iraq, where he joined up with Ansar al-Islam, a militant Islamic group controlling a string of villages on the Iranian border of the Kurdish self-rule area. The group is thought to be the creature of Osama bin Laden's second in command, Ayman al- Zawahiri. Its leader, Mullah Krekar, was detained by Dutch police last September after arriving on a flight from Iran because Jordan had asked for his extradition, accusing him of drug trafficking. He now enjoys refugee status in Norway. While evidence of Ansar al-Islam's links to al-Qaeda are comparatively strong, its links with Saddam remain largely circumstantial. Villages in the area around Ansar territory have reported seeing Iraqi Mukhabarat agents making contact with Ansar operatives. There are also reports that TNT seized from Ansar during one of its assassination attempts on Kurdish officials was produced by the Iraqi military, and that arms are sent to the group from areas controlled by Saddam. About a dozen senior members of Ansar trained at a camp in Afghanistan which specialised in chemical and biological weapons, such as ricin. Mr Bush said the evidence for a Baghdad-Bin Laden connection also came from "statements by people now in custody". But according to a US official familiar with CIA thinking on the issue, the senior al-Qaeda members in captivity, such as Abu Zubeidah and Ramzi bin al-Shibh, have not implicated Iraq. -Caveat Lector- Sharon warns Labour: join me or we vote again http://www.guardian.co.uk/israel/Story/0,2763,884957,00.html Victory soured for prime minister as left's refusal to consider coalition pushes Likud towards deal with far right Chris McGreal in Jerusalem Thursday January 30, 2003 The Guardian Ariel Sharon yesterday threatened to call another election if the refusal by the battered Labour opposition to join a coalition government forces him into the arms of the far right and ultra-orthodox religious parties. "I do not plan to establish a narrow rightwing government under any circumstances," Mr Sharon told Israeli television. "If there is no choice and I am unable to form a unity government, I will not hesitate to hold elections again." The final results of Tuesday's general election, barring a small proportion of votes from diplomatic missions and some soldiers, saw Mr Sharon's Likud party almost double its representation in the knesset to 37 seats. Labour lost a quarter of its seats, falling to only 19. The surprise of the election was Shinui, the fiercely secular party of Yosef "Tommy" Lapid which is agitating for the creation of a government devoid of any ultra-religious parties. It more than doubled its seats to 15, making it the third largest party in the knesset. Smaller parties slumped badly. The ultra-orthodox Shas lost a third of its seats and the leader of the left- wing Meretz, Yossi Sarid, resigned after support for his party dropped. But while Mr Sharon's rightwing bloc has a healthy majority with 67 seats in the 120-seat knesset, he would be reliant on the far right - notably the extremist National Union - to forge a functioning government. The prime minister has now said categorically that he does not want that. Mr Sharon's aides said the first approach will be to Labour and, if that fails, he will sound out Shinui. But Shinui's insistence that it will not serve in any government with ultra- religious parties - along with its demands for legislation forcing ultra- orthodox Jews to serve in the army, and for curbs on the huge subsidies to religious schools - may be more than Mr Sharon can swallow. The Israeli left, battered by the scale of the electorate's rejection of its policies and past, is divided on the next step. The Labour leader, Amram Mitzna, says he wants to maintain a "fighting opposition" to challenge Mr Sharon's policies in the expectation that his administration will collapse within a year or so. But many eyes in Labour are on the former leader, Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, who is blamed by some in the party for the scale of the defeat. Mr Ben-Eliezer sat as defence minister in Mr Sharon's 20-month unity government, over seeing the brutal reoccupation of the West Bank last year to the horror of the peace camp. Although he belatedly ruled out Labour joining another coalition administration for the sake of form during the election campaign, Mr Ben- Eliezer's allies say that the party will become increasingly marginalised if it does not bow to the widespread public support for a unity government. While no immediate challenge to Mr Mitzna's leader ship is in the offing, it could be provoked by the threat of another general election or some external factor, such as war in Iraq, which would galvanise public support behind Mr Sharon's insistence that national security is at stake. Any challenge aimed at drawing the party into a unity government would probably also win the backing of the former Labour prime minister Shimon Peres, who also served in Mr Sharon's government, as foreign minister and chief apologist abroad. Mr Mitzna believes it would do his party and the peace camp yet more damage to again enter government with a prime minister whose tenure has seen more violence against Israeli citizens than at any time since the independence struggle in 1948, particularly when Mr Sharon is frequently blamed for provoking the latest Palestinian intifada with a confrontational visit to the Temple Mount. In reaching out to Labour, Mr Sharon provoked some wry smiles by invoking Yitzhak Rabin, the murdered dovish prime minister. "We must work together and I take great encouragement from the words of Yitzhak Rabin. He said, 10 years ago, the words that are truly so important and so true even now, as to the need for unity. Because we are in a terrible struggle, this is more important than any personal or party interest," he said. While Mr Sharon implicitly accuses those parties that refuse to join a unity government of putting party politics ahead of the national interest, Mr Mitzna and his allies say it is the prime minister who is jeopardising the Jewish state with his intransigent insistence that he can conquer "the terror" through force and impose an emasculated Palestinian state. [CTRL] The (New) Marshall Plan
-Caveat Lector- http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/11.02/marshall.html Issue 11.02 - February 2003 The Marshall Plan For 40 years, the man Pentagon insiders call Yoda has foreseen the future of war - from battlefield bots rolling off radar-proof ships to GIs popping performance pills. And that was before the war on terror. By Douglas McGray Andrew Marshall, the Pentagon's 81-year-old futurist-in-chief, fiddles with his security badge, squints, looks away, smiles, and finally speaks in a voice that sounds like Gene Hackman trying not to wake anybody. Known as Yoda in defense circles, Marshall doesn't need to shout to be heard. Named director of the Office of Net Assessment by Richard Nixon and reappointed by every president since, the DOD's most elusive official has become one of its most influential. Today, Marshall - along with his star protégés Vice President Dick Cheney, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, and Deputy Secretary Paul Wolfowitz - is drafting President Bush's plan to upgrade the military. Supporters believe the force he envisions will be faster and more lethal; critics say it relies on unproven technology. As US troops gathered overseas, Marshall sat for a rare interview. WIRED: Until recently, defense planners talked about a "revolution in military affairs." Now the buzzword is "transformation." Why the change? MARSHALL: Transformation is more of an imperative: We've got to transform the force. I personally don't like the term. It tends to push people in the direction of changing the whole force. You need to be thinking about changing some small part of the force more radically, as a way of exploring what new technologies can really do for you. What is the next radical change the US will reveal on the battlefield? "One future intelligence problem: knowing what drugs the other guys are on." One that's still under way is the emergence of a variety of precision weapons, and also coupling them with sensors. Another is the ability to coordinate the activities of separate elements of the forces to a level that has never been possible before. That's promising, but less far along than precision weapons. A third is robotic devices: unmanned vehicles, of which the UAVs are the furthest along, but also similar kinds of devices undersea, and smaller devices that might change urban warfare by being able to crawl through buildings. Are there revolutionary developments that don't involve combat? There are ways of psychologically influencing the leadership of another state. I don't mean information warfare, but some demonstration of awesome effects, like being able to set off impressive explosions in the sky. Like, let us show you what we could do to you. Just visually impressing the person. Did 9/11 change your mind about anything? Not much. It was obvious that we were wide open to attack. Has anything happened that surprised you? The rapidity of the collapse of the Soviet Union surprised me. I thought they were in trouble, but the rapidity and completeness of the withdrawal were really striking. Is there a precedent for one country staying on top through a series of military revolutions? Or does one country always leapfrog another? Through most of the 19th century, the British Navy exhibited that kind of thing. But it was quite interesting the way they did it. They tended to let other countries, mainly France, do the early experiments and come out with new kinds of ships. If something looked like a good idea, they could come in and quickly overtake the innovator. They seemed to do that as a way of capitalizing on their advantage and saving resources. Isn't the United States in a similar position now? That's probably the case. But some of the countries that would be candidates to make innovations aren't doing it. The Japanese and West Europeans aren't really making big changes. The Swedes are an interesting case. For 200 years their basic problem was the possibility of a large-scale land invasion by the Russians. They've decided that that has gone away. If anything could happen, it would happen across the Baltic. So they're rethinking, given modern technology, how to create a defense largely on sea frontiers. It's possible that they will make some innovations that we'll pick up and capitalize on. For instance? They've designed three new naval vessels. One is an air-independent submarine [running on fuel cells rather than nuclear power, which allows it to travel almost silently and remain submerged for extended periods]. They have a surface ship that's a bit more conventional. And then a radically new naval vessel called the Visby, which has practically no metal in it other than the engine. It's constructed to be very stealthy. You're known for following technology outside the traditional realm of national security. Pharmaceuticals, for instance. People who are connected with neural pharmacology tell me that new classes of drugs will be available relatively shortly, certainly within the deca

Bush: "When we conquer Iraq we're going to deport all the goats and sheep! No more sex for you, Saddam!" Saddam: "What?! Why, you, you ARRRGGH!" Clang! Clang! Clang! Clang! (More cheering and roaring from the crowd.) Bush: "When we conquer Iraq and depoos dipos get rid of you we're going to impose democracy on a grateful people!" Saddam: "Are you just stupid, or maybe just a bad liar? The Kurds are never going to get their freedom, and you know it! You're going to put in a puppet dictator just like the one you're getting rid of! Moron! You're nothing but Howdy Doody to the neocons' Edgar Bergen!" Bush: "That's Alfred E. Newman to the neocons' William Gaines, you retardo! Charlie McCarthy was Edgar Bergen's dummy, not Howdy Doody!" Saddam: "What are you going to do next, quote Austin Powers at me? Make sure you don't choke on a pretzel!" Bush (turning red): "Why, I'll, I'll ARRGGH!" Clang! Clang! Clang! Clang! (More cheering and roaring from the crowd. Bets are placed and much beer is consumed.) Bush: "We are doing God's work in bringing freedom to the oppressed!" Saddam: "BWAHAHA! Idiot! Neither of us is doing God's work! You think God approves of murder and theft? You're doing the work of a bunch of dumb- bunny Christian Zionists who think they can kickstart Armageddon and get Jesus to return! Your daddy was so stupid he thought starting a war would guarantee him reelection! Didn't work, did it? It could happen to you, too!" Bush (sputtering): "Why, why, you, you " Saddam: "Don't develop more indignation that you can contain, buster! You'll say 'strategery' or 'warren terrism' or maybe something even more silly! And remember this all empires fall! And that's exactly what America has become!" Bush: "ARRGH!" Clang! Clang! Clang! Clang! (The crowd roars deliriously.) Bush: "You tried to kill my dad!" Saddam: "Kuwaiti propaganda! And you fell for it! Your dad means nothing to me!" Bush: "You're in cahoots with Al-Qaida!" Saddam: "Oh, sure I am! An atheist who believes only in himself, dictator of a secular government, and you think I'm going to support a bunch of religious fanatics who despise me and want to overthrow me so they can set up an oppressive theocracy!" Bush: (sputtering again): "You tried to kill my dad!" Saddam: "'You tried to kill my dad! You tried to kill my dad!' Your dad couldn't find his butt with both hands! He screwed up so badly he let that psycho white trash rapist Clinton in office!" Bush (eyes bulging): "ARRGGH!" Clang! Clang! Clang! Clang! (The crowd hoots and stamps its collective feet.) Bush: (gasping): "I'm getting tired! Surrender, Saddam, and I'll let you live in exile!" Saddam: "Are you nuts? I'm as loony as Hitler! Did he surrender? Of course not! He went out telling his generals to destroy everything in Germany! You think I won't waste all the oil wells in Iraq? I hope your troops can move fast!" Bush: "They'll move so fast your troops will be on their knees kissing American soldiers' hands and begging for their lives! Your country was the cradle of civilization? Look at it now! A Third World joke! What happened, Saddam? Wrong religion, maybe? " Saddam (lips quivering in rage): "ARRGGH!" Clang! Clang! Clang! Clang! (The crowd howls.) Bush (out of gas and looking around wildly): "Cheney! Rumsfeld! Bennett! Limbaugh! Boot! Kristol! Hey, where are you guys? I need some help out here! You aren't a bunch of chickenhawk armchair warriors, are you?" Saddam: "Buk! Buk! Buk! Buk!" Bush: (sticking sword into ground): "I declare victory!" Saddam (sticking his sword into the ground): "I declare victory!" Both leave the Coliseum to the wild cheers of the crowd. Saddam returns to Iraq, where much to his surprise he finds he has been overthrown and replaced with the traditional monarchy. He quickly finds there are not 72 virgins awaiting him in Paradise. Bush returns to America, where he finds to his surprise that the original Republic has been restored and 90% of the federal government closed down. He

-Caveat Lector- World Socialist Web Site www.wsws.org http://www.wsws.org/articles/2003/jan2003/bush-j30_prn.shtml WSWS : News & Analysis : North America Bushs State of the Union speech: the war fever of a ruling elite in crisis By the Editorial Board 30 January 2003 Back to screen version| Send this link by email | Email the author The State of the Union speech delivered by George Bush to a joint session of Congress Tuesday night reflected a government in deep crisis. The war fever in the chamber and Bushs litany of lies and threats created the impression of a ruling elite that feels itself under siege and overwhelmed by economic contradictions it barely comprehends. Bush speaks for a regime that is going to war in the hope that it can somehow extricate itself from its crisis by means of military aggression and the seizure of Persian Gulf oil. It was impossible to sit through Bushs hour-long tirade without wondering what George Orwell would have made of such contributions to Newspeak as Bushs description of the massive invasion force assembling on Iraqs borders as those who will keep the peace. Or such grotesque assurances to the Iraqi people as, Your enemy is not surrounding your country; your enemy is ruling your country; and the claim that an American military occupation of Iraq will be the day or your liberation. These words were spoken as the Pentagon leaked reports that the US will strike Iraq with up to 400 cruise missiles in the first 24 hours of war, in what is described as a shock and awe strategy aimed at terrorizing the country into submission. (See US plans shock and awe blitzkrieg in Iraq) Secretary of State Colin Powell, meanwhile, has dismissed charges that Washington is going to war in order to seize control of the countrys vast oil reserves, insisting that it will only hold them in trusteeship, a euphemism for colonialism that came into vogue in the aftermath of World War I. Similarly, on the domestic side, Bush raised the issue of poverty in the US, and proposed to deal with the problem by further slashing taxes for the rich. He invoked the massive crisis of health care, and proposed measures to gut the Medicare program that serves senior citizens. War is peace, occupation is liberation, and colonialism is freedom. Only the propaganda department of a regime every bit as depraved as the one depicted in Orwells 1984 could have crafted the words read by Bush from his teleprompter. The collection of gangsters and sadists who occupy the top echelons of both the Bush administration and Congress jumped to their feet to cheer the presidents vow to unleash the full force and might of the United States military against an impoverished and oppressed country already severely ravaged by war and economic sanctions. They whooped it up when Bush, in the language of a Mafia don, alluded to his governments success in rubbing out alleged terrorists. Touting the arrest of more than 3,000 suspects, most of them immigrants rounded up on minor immigration charges, Bush boasted, Many others have met a different fate. Lets put it this way, they are no longer a problem to the United States. Bush went on to announce the formation of a Terrorist Threat Integration Center, merging functions of the CIA, FBI, the Pentagon and the new Homeland Security Department. The creation of this new super- spy agency tears to shreds Constitutional safeguards against government surveillance of American residents and citizens. While White House officials had claimed the speech would make the case for war against Iraq, it did nothing of the kind. Bush reiterated a litany of alleged transgressions by the Iraqi regime that have all been heardand refutedbefore. There were the unsubstantiated and politically implausible allegations of Iraqi ties to Al Qaeda, a movement whose Islamist hostility for secular nationalist movements like the Baathists in Iraq is well known. Bush again claimed that the Iraqi regime had purchased aluminum tubes suitable for nuclear weapons production, an allegation already discounted by the International Atomic Energy Agency based on its inspections in Iraq. In a cynical slight of hand, Bush presented UN charges that Iraq has failed to prove that all of its non-conventional weapons from the 1980s have been destroyed as proof that such weapons exist todaysomething even chief weapons inspector Hans Blix does not assert. As a moral justification for war, the US president cited human rights reports detailing savage methods of torture used by the Iraqi regimes secret police. If this is not evil then evil has no meaning, declared Bush. But the US administrations moral outrage over torture is relative. It all depends on who is doing it. All of the hideous methods mentioned by Bush have been catalogued for decades in human rights reports issued on the practices of US-backed dictatorships in Latin America and elsewhere. Moreover, the US itself is presently
[CTRL] The COD Factor
-Caveat Lector- Hello there, Now, you will need to be in a good mood to bother with this email. For it is tedious in the extreme. And for some a load of cods wallop. Very sincerely John D. Miller, London The COD Factor - Counting Oneself Down I have banged-on about February 1st 2003 as a War Weekend or as the Ring of Fire, a day of terrorism. This prediction was first proffered up at the end of last November, as I noted certain 'numbers' were using February 1st to make a statement. Yes, I know this all sounds silly, but then thats what I into. An example for why February 1st 2003 is seen in Miss Liberty. Standing at the entrance to New York harbor is a statue of a woman holding a book and a torch, a statue 151 feet 1 inch high on a plinth 154 feet high, so Miss Liberty stands 305.08334 feet above the ground. The monument of Liberty Enlightening the World was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the United States to commemorate the 100th anniversary of American independence. And the Statue of Liberty National Monument officially celebrated her 100th birthday on October 28th, 1986. Over the years, the Statue of Liberty has grown to include freedom and democracy as well as this international friendship. First to the height Miss Liberty, at 305.08334 feet and /0.6 is 508.47223 days and counting from 12:17am Tuesday, September 11th 2001, is February 1st 2003. And secondly, counting from 7pm October 28th 1986, when the Statue of Liberty National Monument officially celebrated Miss Libertys 100th birthday, to February 1st 2003 is 16.261334 years, and cubed is 4300 the reference number for the Shroud and 4300 x 430 and /2 is 924,500 square feet, the once area of the marble covering of the Great Pyramid, the symbol of Death. Of course there are those who have no inclination to consider what I number crunch, and that is there prerogative, and this goes probably more for religious people than those who are not so, but still the numbers are a fact of a kind. So February 1st 2003 is locked into probably the most terrible day in my life, the when some 3,000 innocent people died, mostly in the destruction of Twin Towers. The World Trade Center consisted of two 110-story buildings (known as the "Twin Towers") and five smaller buildings. Architect Minoru Yamasaki designed the World Trade Center Towers to be among the tallest buildings in the world, and Tower One was 1,368 feet tall and Tower Two was 1,362 feet tall. And so the two towers = 2,730 feet x 12 inches is 3 lots of 10,920 inches. And the volume of the greatest tomb on Earth, the Great Pyramid, is 91,575,000 cubic feet, and the reciprocal is 1.0920010920e-08. So another symbol for Death, the Great Pyramid is 1092, a number reference for the Twin Towers. Now the Pyramids Shroud reference number 4300 and + the volume of that which the Shroud covers at 1092 is 5392 and so made up of the great Ancient Egyptian goddess Isis at 580 x 7 times is 4060 + 666 + 666. Or ABRAXAS at 365 + 365 + 666 x 7 times is the Shroud at 4300 + Death at 1092. The Man-Sphinx and the Shroud of Death. But it gets worse, in that the Shroud at 4300 + Death at 1092 at 5392 is a most diabolical reference number, for its represents the Man-Sphinx, the Arabs once called the Terror the Guardian of the Pyramid, and I determined this reference number also as the Biblical Beast that is to come out of the sea of people, (Revelation 13). The Sphinx is some 188 feet in length and 65 feet high and 188 x 65 is 12,220 and 12,220 is made up of 5780 + 6440. And the reference number for the Alien Flag, the Trilateral Symbol, is 578 and as feet, from the Subterranean Chamber, the Pit to the apex of the Great Pyramid. Whereas 6440 is the Skull and Bones at 3220 + 3220, which is also, the Dragon, and 6440 is the Throne at 2900 + the Moon at 3540, (the Moon of Hades with a 354 day cycle and the Moon is a symbol of a Ruler of Darkness). Thus 12,220 is fundamentally the Serpent-Dragon, the Sphinx. Now the Sphinx has a Mans face, and the reference number for Man (not men or women) but Man, the spirit person within all humans and released at death, is 126. The same reference 126 is that of the Eye of Horus and the Burning Torch in the hand of Miss Liberty is 126, a reference for the Order of the Illuminati. OK, so the Shroud at 4300 + Death at 1092 is 5392 and quartered is 1348 and the reference for the Man-Sphinx at 126 + 1222. So CODs Wallop for some. That is the COD Factor, the Counting Oneself Down. Once upon a time, at 2.30am May 16th 1983, I had my one and only apparition, where I faced the Adversary. And 3.6804 years later, at 9am January 19th 1987 I made the decision to seriously number crunch. A period of some 1,344.247 days from vision to numbering, and 1,344.247 x 1,344.247 x 10 is 18,070,000 cubic cubits, which as Ancient Egyptian cubits, is equivalent to 91,575,000 cubic feet, the volume of the Great Pyramid.

The FCC is considering repealing or altering a number of key rules that limit media consolidation. But you wouldn't know any of this from watching network television news. Media companies stand to gain a lot from a relaxation of the ownership caps. So it is no surprise that NBC/General Electric, ABC/Disney and CBS/Viacom have all filed comments with the FCC. It's what they haven't done that is more troubling: None of the big three networks have found the story worth reporting in depth. Since the FCC issued its notice on the ownership rules last September, a search of the Nexis news database turns up one network story: a short summary of the FCC's announcement on ABC's World News This Morning (9/9/02), which according to the transcript aired at 4:30 AM. So, people who rely on network TV for their news are almost certainly unaware that the FCC is poised to roll back regulations that currently prevent networks from buying many of their independently owned affiliates. Or that the agency may soon allow one major network to buy another. Or that rules that have kept the newspaper business separate from the TV industry may soon be a thing of the past. There have been plenty of opportunities to report on these sweeping proposals. For example, FCC Chair Michael Powell's appearance before the Senate Commerce Committee on January 14 provided a perfect news peg. The Wall Street Journal's January 3 report, "FCC Flooded With Letters Opposing Media Consolidation," described the massive public input on this matter. A hearing in New York this month, attended by all five FCC commissioners, also attracted media attention-- but nothing on the networks. ACTION: Encourage the nightly network news programs to report on the proposed rule changes at the FCC. You might point out that as the prime beneficiaries of any relaxations of broadcast ownership limits, the networks have a duty to explore the full debate on the issue. [CTRL] NYTimes.com Article: Edward Korry, 81, Who Was Falsely Tied to Chile Coup, Dies
-Caveat Lector- This article from NYTimes.com has been sent to you by [EMAIL PROTECTED] Edward Korry, 81, Who Was Falsely Tied to Chile Coup, Dies January 30, 2003 By DAVID STOUT Edward M. Korry, the United States ambassador to Chile from 1967 to 1971, who was for years wrongly suspected of helping to plot a military coup to prevent a Marxist from becoming president there, died yesterday at his home in Charlotte, N.C. He was 81. The cause was cancer, said a daughter, Alexandra Korry of New York City. Within two years after leaving Santiago, Mr. Korry found himself at the center of a Congressional investigation into whether Washington had made covert attempts to block the accession of Dr. Salvador Allende Gossens, who was elected in 1970 and who died in a military coup three years later. Some investigators in Washington found it difficult to believe that Mr. Korry, as ambassador, could not have known about efforts by the White House and the C.I.A. - later made public - to compel Allende's ouster. After years of protestations, evidence eventually came to light that Mr. Korry had not been entirely trusted by the Nixon administration, which indeed had worked around him. Mr. Korry was named ambassador to Chile by President Lyndon B. Johnson in October 1967. A former news agency reporter and magazine editor, Mr. Korry had previously served in the State Department as a consultant and as the ambassador to Ethiopia. A fervent anti-Communist, he was dismayed when Allende was narrowly elected president of Chile in 1970. "There is a graveyard smell to Chile, the fumes of democracy in decomposition," he cabled Washington that year. "They stank in my nostrils in Czechoslovakia in 1948, and they are no less sickening today." Mr. Korry never hid his dislike for the Chilean leader, which is one reason he came under suspicion when Allende was toppled in 1973, ushering in more than 16 years of military dictatorship. President Richard M. Nixon, like John F. Kennedy and Johnson before him, feared the spread of communism in Latin America. Like his predecessors, Nixon tried to undermine Allende, who had been a source of anxiety in Washington since the early 1960's, when his presidential aspirations became obvious. Suspicions that the Central Intelligence Agency helped to orchestrate the coup surfaced in part because the columnist Jack Anderson published, in 1972, documents from the International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation showing that the company had worked with the C.I.A. to undermine Allende. Later, Senate investigators disclosed that in 1970 President Nixon had ordered Richard Helms, the Director of Central Intelligence, to try to keep Allende from assuming power. Congressional investigators eventually established, after weeks of hearings before the two Senate committees in 1973, that the C.I.A. had used I.T.T. as a conduit to funnel at least $8 million to anti-Allende groups over the years. Mr. Korry told senators and reporters that he had engaged in hardball diplomatic tactics to weaken Allende. But he insisted he had nothing to do with coup-plotting. Had he known of a plot, Mr. Korry maintained, he would have warned the White House to stay out of it, or risk getting mired in another Bay of Pigs. Some found Mr. Korry's account difficult to believe, in part because he repeatedly refused to fully answer some of the lawmakers' questions, insisting that to describe confidential communications and orders would be contrary to "the entire moral contract" he lived by as a diplomat. Some of his questioners could not imagine that he, as ambassador in Santiago, could be unaware of the maneuvering against Allende. Mr. Korry's credibility dissolved with the disclosure of an I.T.T. cablegram in which two company officials in Santiago notified company headquarters that the ambassador had received the "green light to move in the name of Richard Nixon" against the new Chilean leader. Much later, Justice Department investigators determined that the "green light" cable had been seen by the C.I.A. station chief in Santiago, not Mr. Korry. (Richard Helms, who was Director of Central Intelligence in 1973, and an I.T.T. official were eventually convicted of misdemeanor charges for having misled the lawmakers. They were fined and given suspended sentences.) On Feb. 9, 1981, The New York Times published a front-page article reporting that a number of C.I.A. officials involved in the anti-Allende operations backed up Mr. Korry's assertions that he had been kept in the dark because he was not entirely trusted by the Nixon White House or the people at C.I.A. headquarters. "Korry never did know anything," said an intelligence operative who had worked in the American embassy in Chile. After leaving government, Mr. Korry served briefly as president of the Association of American Publishers. He taught international relations at Connecticut College from 1977 to 1979 and was a visiting scholar at Harvard's Center for I
