 The Definitive Story Told

Inside a New Age Mormon-Essene Fertility Cult

 The SAI Logo:
Dead Men's Bones and Demons

The early (left) and present (right) SAI Logo
As we saw in the previous page- the early SAI logo (above left) consisted of a number of occult sumbols, including the Om/Aum ("Aumen") of the Hindu pagan trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva (see left). Of interest also is the fact that a pagan equivalent of the Star of David existed in India and represented the perpetual sexual union of the Hindu deities Kali (downward-pointing triangle) and Shiva (the upward-pointing triangle) that was supposed to maintain life in the Universe. In view of all the other symbolism used by SAI it is unlikely that their hexagram has anything to do with David or Solomon but more likely with occultism and Hinduism.
The present logo, called by SAI the "Aumenite Ankh" (above right) though substantially different consists of a modified occultic Egyptian ankh cross with three horizontal bars instead of the usual one (see right). According to occultist Barbara G. Walker: In Egyptian hieroglyphics, the word ankh meant both "life" and "hand mirror". Akin to the Mirror of Hathor and the Mirror of Venus, the ankh was originally a female symbol derived from primitive Lybian and Phoenician images of the GODDESS: a narrow triangle, surmounted by cross-bar arms and an oval head. It became known in ancient Egypt as a sign of sexual union and the immortality of the gods, granted by the Goddess's divine blood. In token of this, the yonic loop portion of the design [the woman's vagina] was usually painted red, while the phallic cross remained white. Egyptian deities of all kinds were shown carrying the ankh as a symbol of the gift of eternal life, promised to their royal or priestly servants. The ankh was also known as the Key of the Nile, because it represented the mystic union of Isis and Osiris that was supposed to initiate the annual Nile flood, upon which the life of Egypt depended" (The Woman's Dictionary of Sacred Symbols Sacred Objects, 1988, HarperCollins, p.83). The ankh (or Crux Ansata) is common symbol used by satannists and formed an important part of the ancient Egyptian cult for awakening the dead into new life. SAI describes its own logo as the "Messianic Insignia: Aumounite Ankh or Ogdoad Star with X in middle (32 lined) signifying the full gamut of genetic archetypal potentialities" (SAI homepage, "Wings of War: Eight Wings of the Law", subsection, "Insignia/Medals"). Note also that SAI insignia also includes the "Swastika Hexad of creative will" or "Barashithian Insignia" (Ibid. - this page confirms all that has been written in the Book about SAI's sexual practices).
A better explanation of the SAI logo is that it is a combination of the ankh and the Mystic Cross of the Great Hierophant [master Magician] (above left) which is a combination of a circle and a triple cross, and is associated with the Tarot. The "Great Hierophant" is one of the Tarot Arcana (V) who bears this symbol on a sceptre and wears a crown of two horns and a solar disk inbetween. The triple cross was also used as a personal logo of the Satanist of the 20th century, Aleister Crowley (upper right), whose writing, The Book of the Law, SAI patronises. It is also used by 33rd degree Masons and appears, even more interestingly perhaps, on the "New Jerusalem Bible" of the Catholic Church as the Tarot Arcana V Card is also known as "the Pope".
A careful inspection of the SAI ankh shows a tube running in the vertical shaft into the vaginal area, likely representing a phallus (left). What is more puzzling are the objects in the vaginal area which superfically look like sword hilts but may be reflections of the three crossbars along the shaft (right). Of particular interest is the SWASTIKA (below left) in the very centre of the objects and of the yoni itself, which you will remember appeared as the early SAI logo in a six-armed variety (below left). The appearance of the swastika can be no accident because traditionally in the occult the ankh and swastika are closely related. The swastika has, throughout history, been used as the symbol of various pagan deities including INDRA, DYAUS, ZEUS, JUPITER and THOR, and is wifely used by Masons as an earlier version of the tau cross and the ankh (the latter being a composite of the Tau and the Yoni). It's use by the nazis, who were occultists obsessed with the cult of the dead, is well known (right). Hitler obtained the symbol from the teachings of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, founder of the Lucifer Trust (today renamed Lucis Trust), viâ Dietrich Eckhart, a member of the inner circle of the Thule Society. It's use by SAI, along with the ankh and the Mystic Cross of the Great Hierophant, comes as no great surprise given its occultic roots.
What did surprise me was when, upon magnifying the logo eight times the normal size, to find that it

I wonder, can you grasp the concept that some humans do not remain polarized
and do not find it necessary to categorize each and every entity as one
polarity or its opposite (If you are not this, then you MUST be that).

Existence does not require belief, fortunately for some of us. Belief is not
faith, nor does it equal reality.

And I wonder, does refusing to play the my religion is better than your

Alaska Appeals Court Legalizes Simple Marijuana Possession, Law Enforcement
Dazed and Confused, Suffering Denial

Alaska citizens have the right to possess less than four ounces of marijuana in
their home for personal use. -- Alaska Court of Appeals, Noy v. State, August
29, 2003

The Alaska Court of Appeals ruled August 29 that Alaska residents may possess up
to four ounces of marijuana in their own homes without any criminal or civil
penalty. The ruling, which cites a 1975 Alaska Supreme Court finding that the
Alaska constitution's privacy provisions protect the personal possession and use
of marijuana in the home, once again makes Alaska the only state in the country
with legal marijuana in the home. (After the 1975 Ravin v. Alaska decision, the
Alaska legislature eventually removed criminal penalties for possession of less
than four ounces, but a 1990 voter initiative cheerlead by then drug czar
William Bennett recriminalized simple pot possession. It has taken until now for
the appeals courts to rule on a case that challenged the constitutionality of
the 1990 vote.)

While sources in the Alaska Attorney General's office told DRCNet the state
would appeal the ruling, as of last Friday the Court of Appeals' decision is the
law of the land. But Alaska law enforcement, starting with the attorney
general's office, doesn't seem to get it. Law enforcement spokesmen asked by
DRCNet how they were reacting to the decision responded with a mixture of
confusion and determination to keep on arresting domestic pot smokers and
possessors.

For police in Anchorage, the state's largest city, it's business as usual. We
are still enforcing the law the way we were before this, said Anchorage Police
Department public affairs officer Ron McGee. As far as that goes, there has
been no change, he told DRCNet. And it's still illegal under federal law, he
added.

Greg Wilkinson, spokesman for the Alaska Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Enforcement,
told DRCNet bureau representatives were meeting with other state law enforcement
officials this week to try to figure out how to respond. We are approaching
this from two angles, he said. One feeling is that is will be business as
usual. The other was that it will not. Busting personal users in their homes is
not a high priority, he said, adding that the bureau's focus was on large-scale
commercial operations, but that agents who encountered personal marijuana may
still act. The feeling is that we may end up just confiscating the marijuana
now, he said. He could not explain on what basis police would seize people's
legal property.

And Alaska Chief Assistant Attorney General Dean Guaneli was reading from the
same script. When police come into a home, whether on a domestic violence call
or something else, and see marijuana, we are not in a position to tell them to
turn their back on it, he told DRCNet. We are telling the police it is not
legal to possess. We will continue to do as we have done, we will file charges
and leave it up to the courts.

When Guaneli was asked his position squared with the Court of Appeals' unanimous
and unequivocal ruling -- Alaska citizens have the right to possess less than
four ounces of marijuana in their home for personal use -- he in turn asked,
What does that mean? If tomorrow a new medical study showed marijuana has the
same addictive properties for long-term users as cocaine or heroin, does that
mean the state is prevented from prosecuting those cases? We've think if we have
the chance to go into court, we can show that the reasons for making marijuana
possession a crime are important enough to override our constitutional right to
privacy, Guaneli argued. It is not quite right to say this ruling makes it
completely legal. If we can go in right, we can get the court to change this.

Unsurprisingly, Fairbanks defense attorney Bill Satterberg, who successfully
argued the ground-breaking case as well as other related cases
(http://www.drcnet.org/wol/295.shtml#alaskaruling), begged to differ with
Guaneli's interpretation of the ruling. Is the possession of less than four
ounces of marijuana in your own home legal in Alaska? he asked. The answer is,
under state law, yes; under federal law, no, he told DRCNet. We are moving
into an area where a state constitution grants greater freedom than the US
Constitution. As a practical matter, Satterberg added, federal prosecutions for
simple marijuana possession are highly unusual.

But if state and local law enforcement is going to argue that it can make
marijuana possession arrests because of federal law, they could be in for some
tough sledding, he suggested. If state law enforcement officers attempt to
override state constitutional guarantees to prosecute federal laws, they will be
treading on dangerous ground, Satterberg said. The police need to get some
good legal advice. These officers are sworn to uphold the law, and what I'm
hearing them say is they're not going to. If the police are saying

1) Democrats employed the unprecedented tactic of using a
filibuster threat in order to block President Bush's nomination of
Miguel Estrada to a DC federal appeals court slot, but you
wouldn't know that from the ABC, CBS and NBC stories on Thursday
night after Estrada withdrew his nomination which also failed to
point out how he had the support of the majority of Senators --
just not the 60 votes required for cloture. CNN's Aaron Brown and
Jonathan Karl, however, made both points.

2) Kudos to Dan Rather for asking Lieutenant General Ricardo
Sanchez, the commander of American forces in Iraq, to name the
biggest mistake or inaccuracy that the press in general is making
about the situation here? And he prompted Sanchez: Give me one
example of a success that you think is being under-reported. The
questions came, however, only after Rather pursued the usual line
about whether the Iraq is becoming a 'quagmire' out of the
Vietnam era. Later, Rather gave air time to scarf-covered, U.S.
soldier-killing terrorists to denounce Americans.

3) As September 11th approached last year, Reuters ran a caption,
beneath a photo of Ground Zero, which declared that human rights
around the world have been a casualty of the U.S. 'war on terror'
since September 11. Now this week, just days before another
September 11 anniversary, Reuters has distributed a photo caption
which argued: The suicide hijack attacks on New York and
Washington in 2001 produced a remarkable outpouring of sympathy
for America, but sympathy soured as Bush declared a vague 'war on
terror' that he took to Afghanistan and then, far more
controversially, to Iraq.

4) ABC and NBC led off their morning show interview segments
Thursday with their newest oracle, former Army Secretary Tom
White, who has a new book denouncing the Bush military strategy in
Iraq. Last year they only cared about his ties to Enron, but on
Thursday neither network made any mention that White had been the
subject of heated congressional hearings (which they covered) last
July on White's background as a former Enron official who cashed
out millions of dollars in stock shortly before Enron's collapse.

5) Weekend TV viewing alert: Rush Limbaugh will be on Cal Thomas's
Saturday night FNC show and Showtime on Sunday night will premiere
its docudrama about President Bush and his top advisers in the
days after 9/11.

the employer that now sets the standards for working-class America is Wal-Mart. The nation's largest employer, with 3,200 outlets in the United States and sales revenue of $245 billion last year (which, if Wal-Mart were a nation, would rank it between Belgium and Sweden as the world's 19th largest economy) doesn't pay its workers -- excuse me, "associates" -- enough to buy decent cars, let alone homes. According to a study by Forbes, Wal-Mart employees earn an average hourly wage of $7.50 and, annually, a princely $18,000.

Controlling as it does so much of the low-end retail market, Wal-Mart has, with great success, pressured suppliers to cut their labor costs. And unless American unions can find the political leverage to block Wal-Mart's expansion into non-southern metropolitan areas, the company poses a huge threat to the million or so unionized clerks who work at the nation's major supermarket chains.

Pointing out that our relationship with Israel is dangerous and deadly is a part of this goal and clearly the one that rubs you the wrong way since you represent Zionist interests. Your smears and silly connections prove the point and also prove that we're making inroads. We WILL prevail.

Silver Shirts who became I Am and Elizabeth Claire Prophet's group were doing the same thing as the America First people?   Different fronts...different names.same pot of stew.

This is insanity. Keep making silly connections and coming to your wild conclusions all you want...it exposes you.

Have a nice weekend "Dorothy Zuukie"...and GO BEARS!!
Are you going to be a drum majorette at our home opener in a few weeks??? I look forward to seeing if you can still play.

[CTRL] The Peace Plan Is Dead

2003-09-05 Thread William Shannon
-Caveat Lector-
http://reese.king-online.com/Reese_20030905/index.php

The Peace Plan Is Dead
by Charley Reese

"To sum up: The Road Map is dead, because Sharon was against it from the beginning, Bush saw it only as a photo opportunity on a nice background and Abu Mazen did not get from Israel and the U.S. anything that he could present as a Palestinian achievement."

Those are the words of an Israeli writer, Uri Avnery. He is exactly right, despite Condoleezza Rice's schizoid claim that the peace plan is still alive. It's stone-cold dead. Heck, I told you so the day it was announced. The peace plan was bound to fail because President George W. Bush is too gutless to confront Israeli Prime Minster Ariel Sharon, and a Palestinian state is the last thing in the world Sharon wants.

The Palestinian prime minister, Abu Mazen (also known as Mahmoud Abbas), got a cease-fire, but, of course, Sharon simply continued to assassinate Palestinian leaders until he finally provoked the bus bombing. It was Sharon who violated the cease-fire, just as it was Sharon who started the intifada, but America's lap-dog media will never tell you that.

You have to understand the language of propaganda. All Sharon has said over and over while Bush, like an obedient dummy, repeats it is that the Palestinians must "dismantle the infrastructure of the terrorists." Israel, of course, from Bush's standpoint doesn't have to do any of its share of the peace plan.

Well, dust off your brain and think about that. Have we, a superpower, been able to dismantle the infrastructure of terrorists? Has Israel, a regional superpower, been able to dismantle the infrastructure of terrorists? The answer in both cases is "no." Then how could a weak Palestinian prime minister with no army do it? The answer is, of course, he could not. Moreover, Sharon knew he could not, and Bush is too naive to understand what's going on around him. The way you discredit somebody is to give him or her a task you know the person cannot do. That's what Sharon-Bush did to Abu Mazen.

Now Sharon has a free hand. He can go on expanding Jewish settlements, go on assassinating Palestinians, go on demolishing their homes, go on building an apartheid wall, go on making their lives a living hell with closures, curfews and checkpoints. And Bush will stand there, pathetically weak and indecisive, just as he has for the past two years. Sharon is not only sowing the seeds of Israel's eventual destruction, but he is also cutting the ground out from under Bush. Bush's entire foreign-policy scheme is turning to ashes right before his eyes.

Remember, the grand scheme of all those neoconservative wizards who have manipulated Bush was that knocking off Saddam Hussein and magically converting Iraq into a liberal democracy would make it much easier to achieve peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians. The only problems with that scheme are that the Iraqis don't want a liberal democracy and the Israeli government doesn't want peace.

You might not care what happens to Palestinians, especially if you're a member of that cult of Christian Zionists who can't tell the difference between the Old and New Testaments and have never heard of context. But heretics aside and be that as it may, American politicians have allowed the Israeli government to drag us into the Middle East wars right up to our necks. We will pay in blood and treasure for that blunder for no telling how many decades. At least when the next terrorist attack comes, you'll know who to thank. One day too late, Americans will long for the isolationist foreign policy George Washington urged us to maintain.

In the meantime, I mourn for the Palestinians. They have suffered unjustly for more than half a century just because they want what our own forefathers wanted freedom and independence. The American press, particularly the anchor-heads on television, made much of the six children killed in the recent bus bombing. Truly that is tragic. But how about the 438 Palestinian children the Israelis have killed during the past couple of years? Those are figures published in an Israeli newspaper. They were killed more or less anonymously as far as the American media were concerned.

Another Israeli writer, Gideon Levy, wrote an ominous piece in Haaretz, an Israeli newspaper, pointing out that the next generation of Palestinian adults has had no experience at all with peaceful and decent Israelis.

"The only Israelis today's Palestinian children tomorrow's generation of adults have seen are those who imprison them in their homes, shoot them, beat them, and humiliate them ... Thus, before our eyes a generation is growing that is not only hungry, psychologically traumatized, unhealthy and without proper education but is also thirsty for revenge and consumed by hatred," he wrote.

One does indeed reap what one sows.

[CTRL] David Kay's September Surprise

2003-09-05 Thread William Shannon
-Caveat Lector-
http://www.tompaine.com/feature2.cfm/id/8791

September Surprise
Bill Berkowitz is a long time political observer and columnist.

Last May, President Bush made his now-famous -- and outrageously false -- statement to a Polish television station: "We found the weapons of mass destruction. We found biological laboratories But for those who say we haven't found the banned manufacturing devices or banned weapons, they're wrong, we found them."

In fact, of course, we hadn't found anything of the sort -- and pretty soon that'll be official. David Kay, the man in charge of the WMD search in Iraq, is expected to release a report this month on what the more than 1,200-member Iraq Survey Group has turned up. And the fact that the count still stands at zero won't stop Kay from trying to paint the search as a success.

Kay is the perfect yes-man. Not only did he head up the U.N. Special Commission (UNSCOM) nuclear search team in Iraq in the early nineties, he has deep roots in the defense industry and is well connected to corporate media. When the president needed someone to hawk his "Iraq's WMD are an imminent threat to homeland security" thesis to the American people, David Kay was the man. During the run-up to the invasion of Iraq, Kay was a ubiquitous presence on the cable news networks, backing the president's assertions to the hilt. He testified before Congressional committees and published op-ed pieces in several mainstream dailies.

So it came as no surprise when Kay traded in his pundit's garb in early June to step in as Special Advisor for Strategy. Appointed by CIA Director George Tenet, Kay was given the responsibility of "refining the overall approach" for the weapons search.

"Kay's experience and background make him the ideal person for this new role," Tenet said when he announced the appointment. "His understanding of the history of the Iraqi programs and knowledge of past Iraqi efforts to hide WMD will be of inestimable help in determining the current status of Saddam Hussein's illicit weapons."

Kay's no stranger to the CIA. In fact, he was fired from his position as deputy director of UNSCOM's Iraq Action Team in the early 1990s because of his contacts with the U.S. intelligence community, according to Gordon Prather, the army's chief scientist during the Reagan years.

It's not something he's ashamed to talk about. In an interview with PBS' Frontline, Kay spoke with surprising candidness:

"Once you were dealing in a clandestine, competitive environment, you needed access to satellite photography, access to signals intercept, access to measurements of leakage and contamination from the programs, so you could identify where it is. Access to defectors, who, after all, were not defecting to the U.N. They were defecting to national governments to use them. So, from the very beginning, you needed that expertise; but I can say for myself personally -- and I'm really only comfortable talking about myself -- although a number of us discussed this in the early days, I realize it was always a bargain with the Devil -- spies spying. The longer it continued, the more the intelligence agencies would, often for very legitimate reasons, decide that they had to use the access they got through cooperation with UNSCOM to carry out their missions."

Kay is also involved with one of the nation's major defense contractors, serving as a senior vice president for the San Diego-based Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), which received about two-thirds of its $6 billion revenue last year from the U.S. Treasury, according to a report by Katrin Dauenhauer and Jim Lobe in Asia Times.

Aside from homeland security projects, SAIC has already won several reconstruction contracts in Iraq, and Kay along with other former company employees are firmly planted in country. The company has headed up the Iraqi Reconstruction and Development Council (IRDC) since the Pentagon established the body was in February, according to the Asia Times report, and also runs the recently established Iraqi Media Network (IMN) project, charged with building a new information ministry, complete with television, radio and a newspaper. SAIC is also a subcontractor under Vinnell Corporation, which has been training the Saudi National Guard for a long time, and is now responsible for pulling together and training a new Iraqi army.

So David Kay has some personal interest in keeping up U.S. appearances in Iraq, including the image that we invaded the country for legitimate reasons. That and his die-hard loyalty to the Bush administration means he'll be spinning the upcoming report as hard and as positively as he can. Unfortunately for him, he may not have much to work with.

Scott Ritter, a former U.N. weapons inspector in Iraq and the author of Frontier Justice: Weapons of Mass Destruction and the Bushwhacking of America, claims looters destroyed or stole Iraq's weapons-program records when they

Evidence of Bombs in WTC !
Posted by: outerbongolia on Aug 27, 2003 - 06:56 PM

When I was loading up old and new video material for my coming "2003 video doc." on the Sept.11 Terror Attack - I suddenly discovered TWO NEW perfect Video Evidences. This is what I just DISCOVERED:

PRESS RELEASE:

FACT:

The FBI and the Medias deliberate FAKED the TIMELINE of many "Pre-Collapse- Explosion- events" at the WTC - in order to cover up, that "BOMBS inside" and "BOMBS below" the WTC were detonated at Streetlevel and in the BASEMENT- PRIOR to both the Tower collapses.

We already have many evidences of this , but last week I found ,.TWO New:

TIMELINE EVIDENCE # 1 :
A New Video Discovery from "abc?" - shows that a journalist man (and a female abc-journalist!?) are running up the street - away from the WTC, and finally ends up hiding behind a car.

QUESTION: Why did they run away from the WTC ?

The Media showed this video on Sept. 11 and told us all, that these persons on the video ran away from WTC because the Tower had just begun collapsing.

That is a Lie !

FACT: They ran away because they heard an explosion and saw the dust cloud from this detonation taking place at STREET LEVEL. The dust cloud came from a bomb detonated at the Street Level (or below) - and certainly not from the falling Tower debris ! (Because at this point both towers were still standing)

MEDIA COVER UP:
The medias did not play the original soundtrack of these BOMBS being detonated. The Medias CENSORED both the PICTURES and the SOUND of this particular clip.

EVIDENCE:
I have seen this "run away journalist clip" mixed into other WTC collapse sequences. Both ABC/CNN and many other TV stations made this fake-mix. That is EVIDENCE of FRAUD ! They are deliberately FAKING the Videorecord and the TIMELINE of the WTC events!

PROOF:
I found a special version of the Clip were the "editors" forgot to "cut away" in their "video mix" ,.. which mean that in a second or two at the end of the Clip,.the camera is "panning from behind a Car", and in the direction from North towards South,..and there you go:

BOTH TOWERS are STILL Standing TALL !!

CONCLUSION:

They were NOT running away from falling Tower debris... No, they ran away from, a Huge BOMB detonated at STREET LEVEL !

TIMELINE EVIDENCE # 2:

Another Clip with huge dustclouds from the PRIOR EXPLOSIONS at the WTC STREET LEVEL - also shows People running away from the WTC

MEDIA-MANIPULATION of videoclip #2 :

Also this clip was FAKED by the MEDIAS. They did not want the TV viewers to understand that this was an additional Street-Explosion. This clip#2 showed a Dust cloud from at BOMB detonated at Street Level. But the medias have mixed this clip ALONG with OTHER collapse Sequences - so that they FIRST showed the Tower collapsing with debris falling, and then they MIXED IN and "put in" the said "other Clip #2" along with their COLLAPSE sequences. (That is deliberately faking the evidence)

Consequence of this Manipulation:
All the TV viewers were manipulated to believe that the people they saw running on the street were running away from the fallling TOWER debris. But they were not! They were running away from a BOMB just being detonated at Streetlevel.

PROOF:
I have measured the DURATION of the clip (in seconds) and the EVIDENCE is indisputable. If we compare with other videoclips from the Real collapse of 2WTC then we can prove that the "real debris-cloud" generated from the Tower collapse filled the "NAMED Street", Totally with SMOKE from Debris in less than 5 seconds. (I can tell this for sure because I followed and AMBULANCE moving in the Streets,...the ambulance arrived just as the #2 WTC collapsed and the driver managed to back away, before the debris cloud hit it. My calculation is indisputable and correct)
WATCH the video!

On the OTHER clip (That with the Explosion) the firefighters and other spectators had more than 25 seconds - before the CLOUD reached them. And you can even see a man with a camera ,WALKING BACK,. TOWARDS the DUST CLOUD ! He walked back because this Dust cloud was not in rapid motion. Around him were numerous of other persons who did not run away. Had this been falling debris - then the cloud would have hit them in less than 5 seconds. Eyewitness have explained that the dustclouds from falling Tower debris created a rapid "dust speed" of up to 50 mph close to WTC. But the clip #2 dust cloud moved very slow because it was not caused by falling debris.

FACT:
The real "Tower collapse DEBRIS Cloud" was in rapid motion when it hit the street. Some say that it went as fast as 80km/hour (No man can run that fast). But the "dust cloud from the EXPLOSION" (clip#2) in contrary was VERY slow and not dangerous at all , because nothing had collapsed yet.

CONCLUSION:
This clearly

Americas New Anti-Imperialists
09/03/2003 @ 12:01am[permalink]

In 1898, the Anti-Imperialist League was established to oppose America's territorial expansion, especially the "liberation" of the Philippines from Spain. Long before a President talked of an "axis of evil" and "regime change," or before Trent Lott and John Ashcroft accused critics of aiding the enemy, President William McKinley and his men attacked members of the League for opposing an America that projected its ideals abroad by force.

Imperialism, League members argued, was unjust, unnecessary and harmful to America's national interests. The league had a diverse membership featuring many respected public figures like Mark Twain, historian and industrialist Charles Francis Adams, Harvard professor and writer William James, financier Andrew Carnegie, reform journalist and senator Carl Schurz and The Nation's founding editor and prominent abolitionist E.L. Godkin.

League members drew a dramatic contrast between America's proud history as the land of liberty and its brutal repression of the Filipinos' struggle for independence. Such militaristic tyranny, they argued in their national platform, would ultimately erode the country's "fundamental principles and noblest ideals."

As Charles Eliot Norton, a founding member of the League, said: "It is not that we would hold America back from playing her full part in the world's affairs, but that we believe that her part could be better accomplished by close adherence to those high principles which are ideally embodied in her institutions--by the establishment of her own democracy in such ways as to make it a symbol of noble self-government, and by exercising the influence of a great, unarmed and peaceful power on the affairs and the moral temper of the world."

Fast forward a hundred years and meet the "Committee for the Republic." The Committee, recently formed to ignite a discussion in the establishment about America's lurch toward empire, includes Republican former counsel to first President Bush C. Boyden Gray; former US Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Charles Freeman, Jr.; President of the Institute for Middle East Peace and Development Stephen P. Cohen; William Nitze, son of Paul Nitze, the Reagan Administration's top arms control negotiator; and Washington businessman (and descendant of Revolutionary war patriot Patrick Henry) John B. Henry.

The Committee's draft manifesto includes language the Anti-Imperialist League would recognize: "Domestic liberty is the first casualty of adventurist foreign policy...To justify the high cost of maintaining rule over foreign territories and peoples, leaders are left with no choice but to deceive the people...America has begun to stray from its founding tradition of leading the world by example rather than by force."

Committee members say the group may create a nonprofit organization and will sponsor forums examining how imperial behavior weakened earlier republics, starting with the Roman Empire. "We want to have a great national debate about what our role in the world is," says Henry. The Committee is also considering ways to "educate Americans about the dangers of empire and the need to return to our founding traditions and values."

In my mind, these latter day anti-imperialists are charter members of the Coalition of the Rational--an embryonic idea I recently proposed to bring a broad, transpartisan group of concerned members of the establishment together to mobilize Americans in informed opposition to the Bush Administration's extremist undermining of our national security.

The Committee's creation is yet another sign of how mainstream members of the conservative establishment are waking up to George W's (mis)leading of the country into ruin. (Paleocons like Patrick Buchanan have also lined up against Bush's empire-building.) After all, imperialism is just as un-American today as it was at the turn of the century--or in 1776.
