Last week, a huge group of 
concerned people gathered in the Ridgewood, NewJerseylibrary 
to hear a talk by James Yee, a Muslim chaplain in the U.S. Army who had 
been arrested and investigated on suspicion of espionage and possible 
treason. 

Mr. Yee was not new to New Jersey, 
for it was the state of his birth. A third generation 
Chinese American who was raised in a Lutheran family, Yee graduated from 
the prestigious West Point Military Academy in 1990. His father 
and brother also served in the U.S. military. 

"Shortly after I graduated from 
West Point, I found myself in an interfaith dialogue," Yee told the 
audience. In this dialogue, James Yee was challenged to 
compareChristianity with Islam. It was then that 
hebecame awareof how little he knew about the Islamic 
religion. 

"The challenge was given to me and 
I realized that I could not judge something I knew nothing about." 
Yee decided to learn about Islam. 

"It's a simple doctrine of 
believing in one God. Throughout history there have been a 
number of prophets chosen by God to teach that message." 

James was attracted to the religion 
and eventuallywent to Damascus Syria to study. It was there 
that he met his wife. 

After the September 11th tragedy, 
Yee became a frequent government spokesman. He helped to educate 
the soldiers about Islam andto build greater religious tolerance 
in the military. 

In November of 2002, James Yee was 
selected to serve as the Muslim Chaplain at Guantanamo Bay, where, at 
that time, 700 detainees were being held by the government for suspected 
terrorist activities. The detainees had not been charged with 
anything nor had they been convicted of anything. And yet, they 
were there in ongoing detention. Yee was given unrestricted access 
to the detainees. 

"We see these men in orange 
jumpsuit as objects," James said. "But they are real. They 
are our brothers. They are our fathers. They are human 
beings.And yet, they are presumed guilty and are being held 
secretly." 

Yee felt optimistic that he could 
make a difference. He listened to the prisoners' 
stories. He assessed their concerns. He listened to their 
complaints. 

"The prisoners told me what they 
were experiencing during their interrogations. They told me 
whatlife was like in the blocks when I was not around." 


Yee soon learned that the prisoners 
were being grossly mistreated. Can anyone say the word 
"torture"? The tensions were leading to prison riots, hunger 
strikes and suicide attempts. The Holy Koran was being 
desecrated.James heard stories about how the prisoners were 
put in the center of a satanic circle which was painted on the 
floor. They were told "Satan is your God now". 


James Yee instituted a policy that 
would correct the religious abuses. 

"One of the most emotional things 
that I saw there was howthe conditionsdeteriorated within 
the time frame that I was there. I recall seeing two detainees 
permanently residing in the hospital, who had become so depressed that 
they could no longer eat and had to be force fed. A tube was 
inserted through the nose into the stomach. It was a very painful 
experience. The prisoners had to be shackled down with 
handcuffs to both sides of the bed. As the tub was inserted, you 
could hear the detainees scream out in pain." 

In September 2003, the landscape of 
Yee's life changed abruptly. He was on his way home to meet his 
wife and daughter for a two week leave. He never 
arrived. For on that trip, he was secretly arrested, accused 
of spying and of being an operative in a ring that aimed to pass secrets 
to al-Qaeda. He was shackled in chains and thrown in the back of a 
truck with an armed guard. Goggles were put on his eyes and 
industrial earmuffs were placed on his ears. 

James Yee was locked away in a navy 
prison where he spent 76 days in solitary confinement. The 
military leaked information about the case to the press and the media 
went on a feeding frenzy. Chaplain Yee was vilified on the

Opening Up Jewish Eyes

My position is not an enviable one. I am a daughter of 
Jewish parents who grew up with a conventional set of beliefs.Although I 
never hadthe "chosen people" nonsense fed to me, I was conditioned 
by certain factors in my childhood. My Jewish education was 
paltry at best,perhaps because my sister andI preferred to "sleep 
in" rather then to attend Sunday school. And yet, I wasgiven 
the usual"there's an anti Semite under every rock" 
warning.I had a meal offear and paranoia served up 
withmy weekly brisket.

My mother once told me about a woman in the family who had married an 
Italian fellow.
"Every time they fought, he called her a kike." I don't 
know whether or not it was a true story. I don't know ifit was 
merelymy mother's way of keeping my leash attached to herso that I 
would notstray from the clan. After all, she had been tormented as a 
child and called a "Christ Killer."I suspect that, on one 
level, she was motivated by motherly love. And yet, I believeit was 
her "fear"whichplayed a more significant role. Unfortunately for 
Mom, "fear"was not a teacher whose class I willingly attended, and as I 
grew older, forbidden fruit developed asweet fragrance.

As my sister and I aged,our rebellious natures emerged.We 
experimented with psychedelics anddated all types of 
people.I do not believe it was a personal vendetta 
againstmy parents. I do notbelieve itwas an "I'll show you" 
statement. It was,I believe, intellectual curiosity and 
a need to make my own mistakes that accompanied me along my journey; 
andmistakes I made - although I prefer to call them "learning 
experiences."In the words of Frank Sinatra (or Paul 
Anka) "I did it my way." Religion,parental warnings,government 
statements and rules were not blindly accepted. They had to make 
sense to me, and they rarely did.I grimaced when some authority 
figure told me,"It's true because Isay it's true."

My mother was a Zionistwho, as she grew older, used 
hercoloratura soprano voice to sing at fund raisers.She 
claimed to be an atheist. My father had been raised in an orthodox 
family and opted to become a doctor because he had witnessed the 
excruciating death of his motherfrom esophageal cancer when he was but a 
young boy He was trulymotivated by the desire to 
help.Dad was an old fashioned doctor who made housecalls but 
never madea great deal of money. Those who have read my essays know 
the details of my past.Since my purpose is not to bore you to tears, I 
will resist the urge to describe my upbringing in great detail.

Although I was raised on the usual Jewish diet of paranoia, I 
found myself extending my circle of friends to all colors and belief 
systems.It was the time of the sixties, and since I wasa 
Greenwich Village hippie, race and religion were never factors in my 
friendships. As Martin Luther King said, "It was the content of ones 
character" that attracted me. 

In those days, I was not a political animal thoughI 
listened attentively as my parents and older sister discussed 
politics.WhenJFK,RFK, MLK and Malcolm X were 
assassinated, I tried to silence the "still small voice" within me. 
I begana foray into the world of spirituality and clung to my 
innocence. However, like a withering branch, it wasdestined to 
snap.And, snap it did.

I found myself in an upside down world in which such horrors asWaco, 
the Mena Arkansas drug drops, and the OKC bombingawakened me from my 
somnolence. Though I concentrated on spirituality I could no 
longer silence my inner voice. Something was deadly wrong on Planet 
Earth. I knew that all my meditation and acts of kindness were 
not enough. As an inhabitant ofthree dimensional 
reality, I had to find a balance between the mountain top and the valley. 


And, though many years have passed, I still strive hungrily for that 
balance. Maybe I always will.

On September 11, 2001, my little world was knocked off its axis.I 
quickly found myself among a group of 911 truth seekers who could not 
accept the government's official fiction of Arab highjackers with boxcutters 
flying planes into theWorld Trade Center. A new chapter of my life 
had begun. I wanted to share my beliefs with friends.

I recall the first time I spoke about David Icke to a churchgoing woman 
with whom I'd taught.
"But he's a Nazi" she warned me as she sent me a disinformation 
website.

"Have you ever readhis writingsor seen him speak? I 
inquired.

"NO."

Case closed. I realized that my newfound information was not 
going to be easily accepted.

Next came my reeducation about the country of Israel. I was 
dismayed to learnthat it was not the "lone democracy in the Middle East" 
anymore than Lee Harvey Oswald was the "lone gunman." whoassassinated 
John F Kennedy. I was shocked to see the myth of" A 
people without a land ...and a land without people" smashed before my 
eyes. I was horrified tolearn that Israel was a racist, 
apartheid state.I was

intensified in the past week, sparking calls for increased patrols to stop the 
illegal immigration. The re-election of President Bush is 
prompting the exodus among Left leaning citizens who fear they'll soon be 
required to hunt, pray and agree with Bill O' Reilly. Canadian 
border farmers say its not uncommon to see dozens of sociology professors, 
animal rights activists and Unitarians crossing their fields at night. 
I went out to milk the cows the other day, and there was a 
Hollywood producer huddled in the barn," said Manitoba farmer Red Greenfield, 
whose acreage borders North Dakota. The producer was cold, exhausted and hungry. 
He asked me if I could spare a latte and some free-range chicken. When I said I 
didn't have any, he left. Didn't even get a chance to show him my screenplay,

higher fences but the liberals scaled them. So he tried installing speakers that

quizzing the supposed senior-citizen passengers. If they can't 
identify the accordion player on The Lawrence Welk Show, We get suspicious about 
their age," an official said. Canadian citizens have complained 
that the illegal immigrants are Creating an organic-broccoli shortage and 
renting all the good Susan Sarandon movies. I feel sorry for 
American liberals, but the Canadian economy just cant support them," an Ottawa 
resident said. How many art-history majors does one country need?" 
In an effort to ease tensions between the United States and 
Canada, Vice President Dick Cheney met with the Canadian ambassador and pledged 
that the administration would take steps to reassure liberals, a source close to 
Cheney said. We're going to have some Peter, Paul  Mary 
concerts. And we might put some endangered species on postage stamps. The 
president is determined to reach out."

pneumonia stats.

Since September 11 Britain 
has been warned of the 'inevitability' of catastrophic terrorist attack. But has 
the danger been exaggerated? A major new TV documentary claims that the 
perceived threat is a politically driven fantasy - and al-Qaida a dark illusion. 
Andy Beckett reports Friday October 15, 2004The 
Guardian Since the attacks on the United States in September 2001, there have been 
more than a thousand references in British national newspapers, working out at 
almost one every single day, to the phrase "dirty bomb". There have been 
articles about how such a device can use ordinary explosives to spread lethal 
radiation; about how London would be evacuated in the event of such a 
detonation; about the Home Secretary David Blunkett's statement on terrorism in 
November 2002 that specifically raised the possibility of a dirty bomb being 
planted in Britain; and about the arrests of several groups of people, the 
latest only last month, for allegedly plotting exactly that. 
Starting next Wednesday, BBC2 is to broadcast a three-part documentary series 
that will add further to what could be called the dirty bomb genre. But, as its 
title suggests, The Power of Nightmares: The Rise of the Politics of Fear takes 
a different view of the weapon's potential. 
"I don't think it would kill anybody," says Dr Theodore Rockwell, an 
authority on radiation, in an interview for the series. "You'll have trouble 
finding a serious report that would claim otherwise." The American department of 
energy, Rockwell continues, has simulated a dirty bomb explosion, "and they 
calculated that the most exposed individual would get a fairly high dose [of 
radiation], not life-threatening." And even this minor threat is open to 
question. The test assumed that no one fled the explosion for one year. 
During the three years in which the "war on terror" has been waged, 
high-profile challenges to its assumptions have been rare. The sheer number of 
incidents and warnings connected or attributed to the war has left little room, 
it seems, for heretical thoughts. In this context, the central theme of The 
Power of Nightmares is riskily counter-intuitive and provocative. Much of the 
currently perceived threat from international terrorism, the series argues, "is 
a fantasy that has been exaggerated and distorted by politicians. It is a dark 
illusion that has spread unquestioned through governments around the world, the 
security services, and the international media." The series' explanation for 
this is even bolder: "In an age when all the grand ideas have lost credibility, 
fear of a phantom enemy is all the politicians have left to maintain their 
power." 

Adam Curtis, who wrote and produced the series, 
acknowledges the difficulty of saying such things now. "If a bomb goes off, the 
fear I have is that everyone will say, 'You're completely wrong,' even if the 
incident doesn't touch my argument. This shows the way we have all become 
trapped, the way even I have become trapped by a fear that is completely 
irrational." 
So controversial is the tone of his series, that trailers for it were not 
broadcast last weekend because of the killing of Kenneth Bigley. At the BBC, 
Curtis freely admits, there are "anxieties". But there is also enthusiasm for 
the programmes, in part thanks to his reputation. Over the past dozen years, via 
similarly ambitious documentary series such as Pandora's Box, The Mayfair Set 
and The Century of the Self, Curtis has established himself as perhaps the most 
acclaimed maker of serious television programmes in Britain. His trademarks are 
long research, the revelatory use of archive footage, telling interviews, and 
smooth, insistent voiceovers concerned with the unnoticed deeper currents of 
recent history, narrated by Curtis himself in tones that combine traditional BBC 
authority with something more modern and sceptical: "I want to try to make 
people look at things they think they know about in a new way." 
The Power of Nightmares seeks to overturn much of what is widely believed 
about Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida. The latter, it argues, is not an organised 
international network. It does not have members or a leader. It does not have 
"sleeper cells". It does not have an overall strategy. In fact, it barely exists 
at all, except as an idea about cleansing a corrupt world through religious 
violence. 
Curtis' evidence for these assertions is not easily dismissed. He tells the 
story of Islamism, or the desire to establish Islam as an unbreakable political 
framework, as half a century of mostly failed, short-lived revolutions and 
spectacular but politically ineffective terrorism. Curtis points out that 
al-Qaida did not even have a name until early 2001, when the American government 
decided to prosecute Bin Laden in his absence and had to use anti-Mafia laws 
that required the existence of a named criminal organisation.

What we can and must do

January 5, 2004People constantly ask us for solutions to the nightmare we find ourselves in, as if we could wave a magic wand and make it disappear. There is no magic wand. There is only resolve, commitment, risk and hard work.

Collectively, we the people hold the power. But holding the power means nothing if you don't exercise it and it is the exercising of it that the Bush regime and the corporations are bent on preventing you from doing. And by not exercising it, you not only are acquiescing in your own enslavement, but in whatever evil they are bent on perpetrating.

We have a bogus president who used bogus attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon to declare a bogus war on terrorism, and who has rained down death and destruction on two sovereign nationsAfghanistan and Iraqfor bogus reasons. If you let him, his corporate cohorts or even his possible replacement get away with this, they will rain death and destruction down on us and more sovereign nations for more bogus reasons.

We must take Stan Goff?s sage advice and immediately draw a line in the sandand that line is the demand that our troops be brought home now! 

The operative word is demand. To be sure, we'll hear excuseswhether they come from Bush, his successor or the Democrats who support illegal wars in the quest for empireas to why this cannot be done. But we must hold to that demand as the antiwar movement of the Vietnam era did, until we arouse enough Americans to the evil being perpetrated in our name for the benefit of the corporations who want to profit from grabbing other peoples' fossil fuels and rebuilding the infrastructure we destroy, and for the benefit of their political hacks who dream of a global American empire. Profit and empire is what it is all about. This is what the lives of our troops, British troops and the troops of the handful of other nations Bush has bribed and bullied into joining his "coalition of the willing" are being sacrificed for, along with the lives of innocent Iraqis and Afghanis. 

Peak oil and gas are staring us in our faces, folks. And these monsters in Washington and the boardrooms have no intention of sharing what is left of these precious energy resources with the rest of the world. Rather than admit the bleak future we are facing and instituting conservation measures to stave off that fateful day, they will kill and pillage to satisfy their and our gluttonous appetite for fossil fuels. Their only conservation effort is in figuring out how to rid the planet of several billion people in a way that most won't notice, while encouraging women to have babies that will serve as cannon fodder for their endless wars. Meanwhile, they will continue to brainwash people into believing that either God or science will provide alternative forms of energy to keep the engines of commerce turning. Not to worry, just keep shopping. 

Crazy, you say? Our government wouldn't do that to us? That's what a number of so-called progressives said about Sept. 11, 2001. Yet, the neoconservatives had the audacity to publicly post a call for a "new Pearl Harbor" (see Rebuilding America?s Defenses, Sept. 2000). And didn't the Bushies, many Congress critters and the corporate media jump on the "new Pearl Harbor" theme in the wake of 9/11? Didn't the Joint Chiefs of Staff, during John F. Kennedy's tenure, come up with a plan, code named Operation Northwoods, for perpetrating seemingly "terrorist" attacks on US soil and blaming them on the Cubans in order to con Americans into going to war against Cuba? Luckily, the Kennedy administration said no and JFK denied Army Gen. Lyman L. Lemnitzer another term as chairman of the Joint Chiefs.

Nope, "our" government wouldn't do that to us. But it is "our" government that on the one hand is the world's biggest drug dealer, while on the other hand incarcerates petty drug pushers and users. The CIA uses illicit drug profits to finance all manner of madness, so is it surprising that after being told that the Taliban had curbed opium production in Afghanistan, that opium production is at an all-time high (forgive the pun) now that the US has "liberated" that country? Kind of neat, eh? Neater still are the private fortunes some of America's "best" families made by selling opium to the Chinese (and you thought that was all a British enterprise).

Now do you still think that "our" government wouldn't encourage and even coerce women to produce cannon fodder for the coming wars, and even use religious fundamentalists as cover in attempting to outlaw abortions and even trying to do away with contraceptives?

Are you foolish enough to believe that the trashing of our constitution, all the color-coded "terror" alerts, and all the "security" nonsense are really meant to keep us free and safer? Can you not see that this is nothing more than laying the groundwork for the next 9/11 the Bushies

According to the latest news reports, you've pushed up your self-imposed deadline for announcing your decision about an independent 2004 presidential campaign from the end of January to mid-February. We're glad to hear that, because maybe it means you're still not sure about the best path to follow. For the good of the country, the many causes you've championed and for your own good name--don't run for President this year. 

Ralph, you've been part of the Nation family for a long time, from the day in 1959 we published one of your first articles, the exposé of "The Safe Car You Can't Buy." Since then, you've been a consistent advocate for active citizenship, investigative scholarship and environmental stewardship. It wasn't hype when we called you Public Citizen Number One. 

We know you've never been one to back down from a fight. When people tell you you can't do something, if you think it's the right thing to do, you do it anyway. That stubborn devotion to principle is one of your greatest strengths. It inspired a generation of Nader's Raiders in the 1960s and '70s, it helped produce notable victories like the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and the Occupational Safety  Health Administration, and it inspired a new generation of young people who flocked to your "super rallies" in 2000. The issues you raise on your website, NaderExplore04.org--full public financing of elections, new tools to help citizens band together, ending poverty, universal healthcare, a living wage, a crackdown on corporate crime--are vital to the long-term health of our country. When those issues are given scant attention by major-party candidates and ignored or trivialized by the sham joint candidate appearances known as presidential debates, we join in your outrage. 

But when devotion to principle collides with electoral politics, hard truths must be faced. Ralph, this is the wrong year for you to run: 2004 is not 2000. George W. Bush has led us into an illegal pre-emptive war, and his defeat is critical. Moreover, the odds of this becoming a race between Bush and Bush Lite are almost nil. For a variety of reasons--opposition to the war, Bush's assault on the Constitution, his crony capitalism, frustration with the overcautious and indentured approach of inside-the-Beltway Democrats--there is a level of passionate volunteerism at the grassroots of the Democratic Party not seen since 1968. 

The context for an independent presidential bid is completely altered from 2000, when there was a real base for a protest candidate. The overwhelming mass of voters with progressive values--who are essential to all efforts to build a force that can change the direction of the country--have only one focus this year: to beat Bush. Any candidacy seen as distracting from that goal will be excoriated by the entire spectrum of potentially progressive voters. If you run, you will separate yourself, probably irrevocably, from any ongoing relationship with this energized mass of activists. Look around: Almost no one, including former strong supporters, is calling for you to run, compared with past years when many veteran organizers urged you on. 

If you run, your efforts to raise neglected issues will hit a deafening headwind. The media will frame you as The Spoiler. It's also safe to predict that you will get far fewer votes than the 2.8 million you garnered in 2000, and not only because your rejection of the Green Party raises expensive new hurdles to getting your name on state ballots. A recent online survey by the progressive news site AlterNet.org found that only one in nine respondents said they'd vote for you if you run this year, a 60 percent drop-off from the number who said they voted for you in 2000. If you run and get a million votes or fewer, the media will say it means your issues were not important. This can only hurt those causes, not to mention the tangible costs another run may impose on the many public-interest groups tied to you. 

You have said your candidacy could actually help Democrats by raising issues against Bush that a Democratic candidate would avoid and by boosting turnout for good candidates for the House and Senate, where the slender bulwarks against Bushism must be reinforced. But these arguments do not compel a candidacy by you. As a public citizen fighting for open debates and rallying voters to support progressive Democrats for Congress, or good independents or Greens for that matter, you can have a far more productive impact than as a candidate dealing with recriminations about being a spoiler or, worse, an egotist. And the very progressives distressed by the prospect of your candidacy would contribute eagerly to have that voice amplified.
