Oh Owl, wasn't that sort of pre-talkie talkie marvellous. I've only seen it
once, but I was enthralled. I had a thing for Victor Jory for ages after I
saw that. And that beautiful child who became a kind of underlord in
Hollywood (can't think of the name right now. And Merle Oberon. Oh, it was
an experience. I saw it in about l976. A few days later I saw "The Naughty

acting is fabulous. It's not often you see two good ones in the same week.

There is some good stuff out there. Just enough to prove they can do without
car chases, karate battles and long, long, long, long, long sex scenes.

The shame of it all is we are expected to foot the bill for whatever comes into
the theatres. An interesting study of Hollyweird and its gaggle of silly geese
can be seen on, paradoxically enough, the E! channel, most notably either via
its Scandals or its True Hollywood Story series. There's an article somewhere
dealing with whether or not the big 'stars' are worth the $$$ paid to them for
their protrayal of life as we (are told we should) know it. My disenchantment
with Hollyweird came about after learning that Jim Carrey makes about $20M a
flick, for being a 'Pet Detective', no less. This is not to forget Bruce
Willis and Mel Gibson making mega$$$ for their contributions to the violence
and mayhem on the (tarnished) silver screen. The latest from Gibson in the
video stores is *Payback* which is well done (everyone gets paid back) but his
one-man (after the fashion of "Rambo") war against some gangsters has something
lacking ... and his character only wants $70K out of it, $70K we are supposed
to believe he deserves but an amount he stole to begin with, nevertheless. And
I thought *Taxi Driver* was violent a quarter century ago (couldn't watch some
scenes).

And, so: we pay the theatres who pay the distributors who pay the whoevers on
up the line with $$$ feeding the imaginations of the stars and directors and
producers and whoevers in search of the next obscenity.

I think the most egregious example of this scam was *Saving Private Ryan*
(which was essentially a remake of the *Longest Day* with an old *Combat* (TV
show) script as the pretext for the story). And for this Spielberg and Hanks
got some award from the War Department. Shows how easily Gen X is duped and
entertained by remakes of reruns. And the ending, when Ryan asks if he was
worth it; to the studios, all those grave markers must have looked like the $$$
amount placards in an old cash register. Why didn't Ryan ask the surviving
family members of all who (supposedly) lost their lives tracking him down? And
just what did Ryan do in the intervening years in justification for the orgy of
blood and guts that Spielberg and Hanks spilled all over the place?

For years I have regarded the Academy Awards as Hollywood masturbating in a
mirror, and giving "American Beauty" the Best Picture award only proves my
point. My wife and I saw it last week, and for once we agreed on a film:
this one is not simply perverse, it is perverted. It has absolutely no
redeeming social value...it doesn't know whether it's a black comedy, a
social commentary, a tragedy, or what, and just winds up being disgusting.

Well, either We detect some "Grapes of Wrath" at the Oscars,
or are we not "All Is Quiet on the Western Front".? Given your
comments - all well desirved I might add - You're giving the
Screen Actors Guild and the Academy "Das Boot" ? Zer Goot !

The majority of the Gen. X Crowd would do well listening to their
Grandparents as to the Truth of Real American History that they
lived through. Those of us in our late 40's can remember our parents
tell us the Truth how they grew up in and lived through the Great
Depression, WW II, and Korea. We in the 40's can relate to the
Gen. X crowd the Truth of Nam and Why We Aren't "Fonda Jane"!

Some of the pundits critized "Saving Private Ryan" calling it -
"Shaving Ryan's Private's". Because of the Ads and reviews I did
go to see the movie, And the Effects Really Rattled My Nerves !

I remember was it 25 years ago, that George C. Scott played
General Patton, in "PATTON", and there was the "Battle of the
Buldge". When my Father, who was there in the Ardenn, in that
Town Surrounded y the German Divisions, He told me how they
made it through on Nothing But Courage. He was a War Hero many
times over. And had suffered the rest of his life from what he went
through. I remember he told me his G.I. General told the Nazi General
"NUTS" as to terms of Surrender. He told me Never Ever Give Up
or Surrender ! I know that If God didn't allow for the Weather to break
for the U.S. Army Air Corps to get through, along with Patton's 3rd
Armored Division to break off one battle to race to their rescue - I
would Not have a Father to guide me growing up. And that Battle
would have been another "Alamo".

My Dad has been gone now since 1982. And I never feel that I could
Thank Him Enough, or my Uncles, the rest of their Generation for what
Terrior they had to endure. Now the Torch has been passed onto us by
our parents. Those of us who are the Gen. X Parents have the Moral
Resposibility and Duty to Teach them the Truth of our American History,
NOT the Intellectual Flatulence that is written in the current "Revisionist
History and Social Studies Books".

Our American Culture is Valuable as it was passed on to us by those
generations that came before us. And we Must preserve it to pass it
"improved" onto the next one. For If we don't; when it is our time for
judgement, what will we say to those who made the ultiminate sacrifice
for our sake? To have let our Society to Degerate as much as it had,
or any further? As Gen. Douglas McArthur said at his farewell speach
to Congress, "Old Soldiers never DieThey Just Fade Away." We
must always remember the Blood of the Patriots made this Nation Free,
And not let our Heritage, our Culture Fade Away. We Owe it to Them.

Or try Bravo, which runs quite a few golden oldies as well as some
of the best independent films that have been produced recently.

Given a ton of rain, I've been doing some movie catch-up. Two of
the new releases on video that should appeal to someone on this
list are The Brass Ring--with a film script about a presidential
election and political corruption by Orson Welles-- and Arlington
Road, with a script that seems to be based on the stories behind
Ruby Ridge and the Oklahoma City bombing. Veerrry interesting.

And for extras, there's The Thirteenth Warrior. I picked it up
because it was the only relatively new release available one night
at my local video store. I've been reading Seamus Heaney's new
translation of Beowulf, the early classic of English literature.
Imagine my surprise when I saw the story of Beowulf unfold
onscreen. It credits a screenplay based on Michael Crichton's
Eaters of the Dead. But Eaters of the Dead is Crichton's adaptation
of Beowulf. And except for Banderos' role, all the elements of
Heaney's translation are right there on the screen. And, in my
opinion, fairly well done, too.

Although I agree about the consolidation of the media which is
giving the "packagable stars" outrageous salaries and leaving
many, many fine actors with peanuts for pay, none of the above
seemed particularly depraved to me. You still get to choose what
you watch.

making assumptions about people on insufficient information. Silly
