Solution found for SSHD problem posted on 6/27/2012

2012-06-28 Thread Gregg C Levine
Hello!
Two days ago I posted a problem report regarding not being able to get the
SSHD daemon properly started on this normal installation. I even provided a
collection of almost meaningful information regarding my problem. I then
prepared to wait until resubmitting that problem report, with more
meaningful information.

Today whilst watching the computer retrieve the many years of accumulated
e-mail via Google I came across a thread concerning a similar problem. The
concluding message in that thread dated 11/23/2009 contained the exact
instructions on how to fix the problem, and get the server properly started.
It worked.

It turned out that one of the messages in that thread contained the exact
nature of the problem and the information the user (then) found, and
reported. It turned out to be the same as mine including the build number of
this release of Windows Seven.

Suggesting an application

2004-11-29 Thread Gregg C Levine
Hello from Gregg C Levine
This is probably the wrong Cygwin list for bringing this up, but
For my work I need to have the tcpdump application running.

That's usually part of all Linux distributions, including my favorite one.
But I've noticed it's not part of the Cygwin collection. Of course I can
grab
the sources from that distribution and build it here, but what about adding
it
to the next great release of Cygwin?

RE: WindowsCVS Client

2004-07-06 Thread Gregg C Levine
Hello from Gregg C Levine
Two questions:
One, whose "Windows CVS Client" are you using? Is it the GUI based one
that's described somewhere on the home page for CVS?
Two, what is your error message? Please post the full error message.

Also, most CVS clients for Linux, anyway, need to have a .cvspass file
created in the user's $Home directory, since I work as the root user,
(which normally you, or I, should not do), that may be needed.

Now folks, if I spoke out of turn here, please don't complain on list,
please do so off list.

And incidentally please not my intentions behind obscuring the
addresses, especially the list.

Embedded Linux building and Cygwin

2004-06-16 Thread Gregg C Levine
Hello from Gregg C Levine
Can I use the tools of Cygwin for building Embedded Linux for the SH4
processor that the Dreamcast uses?

I normally use one of the current family of distributions, but the
tool I use for feeding stuff to the Dreamcast is ignoring the unit,
via the Linux system.

RE: Unable to open files including Korean names

2004-06-13 Thread Gregg C Levine
Hello from Gregg C Levine
Actually Gary, its called SP2 RC1, for XP. Its going through that
phase, with SP1 RC2 due out towards the end of the month, and the
actual SP2 going to the RTM phase so that its in time to be released
by the 21 July, date. (If you can believe that.)

Also, can you tell me, off list, where you got your copy? I was at an
OEM meeting for that guy's operating system, yesterday. The meeting
was held here in NYC.

As for your problem Jaeho Shin, I think the switching of binaries for
the Cygwin DLLs should fix things. At least temporarily.

RE: [ANNOUNCEMENT] Updated cygwin Package: python-2.3.4-1

2004-06-12 Thread Gregg C Levine
Hello from Gregg C Levine

It happens I did just that, the first few times I tried downloading my
Cygwin materials from sites here in the US. The people there ignored
my mail, or just plain deleted it unread. I don't know why.

I also reported to them the problems with downloading the materials
from them, when the site would inexplicably interrupt the process.
What do you feel about deleting them from the list of allowable
mirrors? We can include the alternate mirror of course.

Changing the default user for an ssh login

2004-06-05 Thread Gregg C Levine
Hello from Gregg C Levine
I have a question. How can I change the default user of the Cygwin
version of SSH from my login name to that of the host that I am going
to be logging into?

In this case it is a Linux box, and the user is root. Examining the
man page for this version of SSH did not prove to be enlightening.

My apologies Christopher.
I was under the impression that this was supposed to be the venue for nearly

I think that it is a proper venue for your complaint if 1) this is an
actual error on Planet Mirror's side and not just some random network
problem and 2) "the manager of Planet Mirror" reads this mailing list.
However, I think that both are unlikely.

Improper or badly managed non-US Mirror

2003-02-26 Thread Gregg C Levine
Hello from Gregg C Levine
This is probably the wrong venue for this complaint, but here goes.

I have just started a download, and install, of the current Cygwin setup. I
needed to restart, and pick a different mirror, after the Planet Mirror one,
unexpectedly canceled my activities. I believe that mirror should be
reorganized, and the methods that the mirror uses to send files, to users
should be changed. In fact I believe the manager of Planet Mirror should be
reminded that he is not serving the community by running a badly managed
system.

That contains my opinions. If this is not the proper venue for this
complaint, then I apologize.

Problems with mirror sites

2002-10-30 Thread Gregg C Levine
Hello from Gregg C Levine
Chris, can you contact the manager of the mirror site for Cygwin, that's
hosted at http://mirror.rcn.net ? And the one at http://planetmirror.com ?
For the first one, it has a nasty habit of not allowing me to complete a
download, at normal dialup speeds. For the second one, it has a bad habit of
taking six to ten times as long, as all of the other mirror sites I've used.
I am allowing for the usual problems of massive downloads over a http link,
but for RCN's hardware, I think there is something wrong with them.
Planetmirror just has more issues then we do as people. I just would like
you to speak to them, regarding those issues. And you can see the reasons,
regarding my complaints regarding RCN. If you would like to take this
statement to an off list discussion, go right ahead.

A good question for the maintainers of binary tools for Cygwin

2002-10-18 Thread Gregg C Levine
Hello from Gregg C Levine
I am having more then my usual problems with building a collection of
programs. But that's not your problem fellows, this is:
Does a tool exist that will convert the binary format of a VC library file,

of tools to attempt to build this problematic item, and that's my current
brick wall.

Can you point me at the message with the virus? And the virus? I email

Hello from Gregg C Levine
Okay. I'll agree with you on that notion, Christopher. No real arguement
there. Now as to about those messages? Are those actual messages? I'm
inclined to think not. And I'll be permanently deleting them from my message
store. I also reported the initial example to those cloddies at Earthlink,
I'll be surprised if they know what to do.

Viruses being transported with Cygwin messages

2002-10-13 Thread Gregg C Levine

Hello from Gregg C Levine
Folks, don't roar at me, but I am seeing a number of messages arrive here,
infected. One came with a message via Robert Collins, twice, another from a
message that was discussing the problems with Cygwin's DLL version's and the
way the POSIX layer does its job, within the host's OS. The thing is, they
are all coming via Earthlink, and its cronies, so I think its one infected
machine. Gary, if you really meant to send that message, you'll know which
one I mean, please repost it.

New version of Xfree is available

2002-10-09 Thread Gregg C Levine

Hello from Gregg C Levine
There is a newer version of Xfree available. Currently I do not see a
pre-built binary for Cygwin, on the mirror that I use for specific binaries,
so I am asking here about that. The version number now, is 4.2.1 and it
fixes a security violation. Should I bring this to the attention of the
folks on the Cygwin-Xfree list?

Bootp servers under Cygwin

2002-10-06 Thread Gregg C Levine

Hello from Gregg C Levine
Has anyone gotten a bootp server to work under Cygwin? It seems I now need
just such a service. I've downloaded the original code from UU Net's site.
It is stored in the Usenet's archive of volumne 27. However, when I try to
compile it here, it discovers that my header collection is missing two
specific header files. Has anyone found a work around for this? And then
gotten it to work? I'd be delighted in finding out, and then obtaining
either the source code, or the binaries, or both.

Porting software from Red Hat Linux to Cygwin

2002-10-04 Thread Gregg C Levine

Hello from Gregg C Levine
Obviously people are actively porting software from the library of software,
that was written for Linux, to Cygwin. On this list, several people have
mention the rpm program. Was it a successful build? And does it work? And
where can I obtain a copy? Also, what about the telnet server daemon that
Red Hat makes available for its Linux distribution, has anyone taken a shot
at porting it to Cygwin? It happens I happen to need a copy of the program
for my work. That also includes several other daemons. Rsh, and one other
spring to mind.

Hello from Gregg C Levine
What exactly is the license, that Cygwin is distributed under? I mean,
some of the parts of it, are covered under the GPL, so shouldn't the
division extend itself to cover it?

Reporting a few bugs--rxvt is not properly configured and man does not work nor does info

2002-05-04 Thread Gregg C Levine

Hello from Gregg C Levine
I just finished installing the current collection of Cygwin items.
However, since I selected to install rxvt, I decided to use that, rather
then the regular bash shell. Instead of getting the terminal screen that
I used to finding on all Linux systems, I get garbage. The prompt is not
showing, and when I try to run man to find out how to configure it, man
goes crunch with a complaint that there is not a man page for it. It
even complains about a formatting error, and displays a long line of
untransferrable garbage. It gets worse, when I try to use info to see if
there is an info page or pages on that subject, it goes "clunk", and
says something about "dir not being present". Also, when I go directly
to the info directory, and try info , it does not read the
file, it simply dies again. That problem with rxvt happened twice, now
when I try and launch it, it closes. No error message on the bash shell,
just the sound that my computer uses when he closes a program. I do wish
I could have present these bugs, in a format that would be considered
useful, but I am rather new at this, having returned to using the
toolchain after a rather long vacation.
