But, it actually does seem to be better, just from using CygServer. Thanks
for the tip

I don't see any cygserver options in the config file that relate to AD. What
am I missing?

CYGWIN slow when accessing network share

2019-01-23 Thread J. David Boyd
I've tried Googling for this, with pretty much 0 results.

On my windows 10 machine (32 or 64 bit Cygwin) ls of anything that is a
network share seems to be really slow, taking 20 - 30 seconds to complete.
Saving a file there takes about 10 -20 seconds as well.

My windows 7 machine (32 bit Cygwin) doesn't do that. They are both running
same version of cgywin, except that saving with the windows 7 doesn't slow
down.

Where should I start to find a resolution for this? Anyone have a web url
where the problem has been discussed?

Thanks,

Dave in Hudson, FL

I think everyone might be misreading. He can extract every thing completely
successfully if he breaks it into 2 commands. It is when he tries to have tar
call gzip that it fails. Are there any known bugs like that in the 64 bit
cygwin tree?

Rebase, Peflags, and cygserver

2015-03-27 Thread J. David Boyd

I keep having problems with vforks. Sometime everything is fine for days,
then I start emacs, and get vfork errors.

So I rebaseall, and peflagsall. Emacs works great. Oops, forgot to restart
cygserver. Restart, bam, vfork errors. Or, no vfork error.

It all seems so inconsistent and random. Is there some methodology I am
missing to ensure no vforks?

What I'm doing (with some success)is this:

1. get latest cygwin update
2. del /etc/rebase*
3. rebaseall -v
4. peflagsall -v
5. don't restart cygserver (This means my bash shell window starts a little
slower, but I can live with that.)

I usually have to do this 2 to 3 times before I can get emacs to start without
vfork errors.

Any ideas how I can improve on this? I would like to have cygserver running.

Also, I often run Cygwin Setup (to get something I've missed, like wget..., or
check for updates) while emacs is running. Should I shut it down first?

What errors did you get when you compiled it? Any?

The first I have happen when I run ./configure is this:

"configure: error: The important program kde-config was not found!"

which makes sense, since I don't have KDE on my cygwin/windows machine...

I was having slow slow Cygwin startups the last bit of time, then I read
something about using cygserv since that caches something. (I know, very
imprecise, sorry)

Anyway, grabbed cygserv, started it. Now cygwin starts almost instantly
again. Might not be what you are talking about, didn't read back through all
these messages. Just my 2 cents.

This doesn't seem to tell me if my shell has been started with 'Run As
Administrator', it just tells me if my user is contained in the Administrator
group.

I can start a cygwin shell, and start a cygwin shell with run as admin, and I
get the same results from the above command.

Works for me.

Here's a file on my system:

$ ls -ltr boxes.txt
-rw-rw-rw-+ 1 A4J0PZZ Administrators 45 Aug 5 12:46 boxes.txt

When I run chmod a-w boxes.txt, I get

$ ls -ltr boxes.txt
-r--r--r--+ 1 A4J0PZZ Administrators 45 Aug 5 12:46 boxes.txt

and the file is no longer writeable.

That's not what you are seeing? I'm on Windows 7 with an NTFS disk as well.

Interesting.

I'd just always assumed that usernames have always been case

Great, thanks. I'll get it right away and try it out for a day or so, then
report back here.

hyper keys running the w32 mode emacs

2013-07-11 Thread J. David Boyd

I can get hyper and super working with hyper on capslock, and super on left
and right win, works great.

If I use this code,

( if opsys-cygwin
(setq w32-pass-lwindow-to-system nil
  w32-pass-rwindow-to-system nil
  w32-pass-apps-to-system nil
w32-lwindow-modifier 'super ; Left Windows key
w32-rwindow-modifier 'super ; Right Windows key
  w32-apps-modifier 'hyper) ; Menu key
)

it works as it says. But I want hyper on the capslock key, and can't find
code anywhere to do that.

Is it even possible, any ideas?

I would like to standardize what my fingers do when I change platforms, if
possible,

Thanks,

Dave

Wow, sorry, I said that entirely wrong. I meant that in my recollection, when
I need to rebase, I get messages about "can't create fork". But that's not
what I said at all.

So this is an entirely different error, but I still rebased, first thing, just
as a SWAG.

I got the emacs from your site, thanks, and I'll keep an eye on it and see how
it goes.

I'll keep you posted.

Yes, the first thing I tried was rebaseall, but that also gives (in my

I'll get your rebuilt verison, and see what happens. It's worth a shot.

emacs problem

2013-07-10 Thread J. David Boyd

I'm starting to see this error quite a bit in the terminal window I started
emacs from:

0 [main] emacs-X11 19400 C:\tools\cygwin\bin\emacs-X11.exe: *** fatal error in
forked process - failed to create new win32 semaphore, Win32 error 87

It seems to take an indeterminate amount of time before it starts happening,
and it _might_ be related to running Gnus, but once it starts, it seems that
almost everything I do in emacs outputs another line like above to the
terminal window.

Any idea how to debug this?

I'm using emacs version "GNU Emacs 24.3.1 (i686-pc-cygwin, GTK+ Version 3.6.4)
 of 2013-03-11 on fiona"

TIA,

Dave

latest emacs, cygwin, and constant stackdumps

2011-03-29 Thread J. David Boyd

I'm not certain of the exact version of these, but they are the latest,
as I upgrade at least once a week.

Lately, everytime I do almost anything in emacs, the terminal I started
it from shows:

[main] emacs-X11 4500 exception::handle: Exception: STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION
1149 [main] emacs-X11 4500 open_stackdumpfile: Dumping stack trace to
emacs-X11.exe.stackdump

Any idea what might be causing this?

Everything still works fine, or seems to, but it is rather annoying...

And I'll attach a run of cygcheck -k. Run in a plain bash window.

I pressed the left arrow key, the right arrow key, the up arrow key, the
down arrow key, and q to quit.

Note that the left and right arrow keys do show they are pressed but
just once. The other keys show key pressed, and key released.

To me, this says that something about my xserver is eating keys?

problem with sshd

2010-07-01 Thread J. David Boyd

For years, (and I do mean years), I've had sshd setup on my desktop
Vista box, and have been able to access it remotely with no problems at
all.

I moved the box 1 year ago, and went from Brighthouse as an ISP to
Verizon. Still worked fine.

I just moved it back home, back to Brighthouse, and now, I get a prompt
asking me for my password.

I enter the password I've used for the past few years, and am told
"Permission denied, please try again"

Now, is that the same message, in spirit, as "wrong password"? Doesn't
seem that way to me. Do I have some file/directory that has the wrong
permissions to allow me to logon?

I haven't explicitly changed anything, (that I know of :->  )

One thing I find interesting is that when I look in /etc/passwd, I don't
have an entry for myself.

Any ideas/help/suggestions on how to troubleshoot this problem? I've
been logging onto my home box for the past several years, every day, to
save backups, look up email address/phone numbers, etc, and really rely
on being able to connect to it remotely.

It's not a firewall problem, but something in Cygwin setup. If I boot
into Mandriva 10.0, I can ssh in without any problem at all.

TIA,

Dave in Largo, FL

It is, as I am clicking the window I want to resize, and using the mouse to
drag the bottom right corner to the dimensions that I want.

SSHing in to my Mandriva box, it works perfectly.

SSHing in to my SUSE Linux box, I have to do an "eval `resize`".

SSHing in to my Ubuntu 9.10 box, it works perfectly.

I don't think it is a Cygwin issue at all. And, I'm certain it is a
remote server problem, as it works on many boxes. I re-discovered the
shopt parameter of checkwinsize, which is what controls Bash monitoring
the window size from my prior message.

I was just looking for some help and ideas, and the Cygwin list seemed a
good place to start since I use Cygwin. But I never meant to cast

Resizing a terminal window

2010-05-04 Thread J. David Boyd

I'm using Cygwin to provide my own X server, and using Xterms locally,
and to connect to remote servers.

Locally, I can use the mouse to resize a window, and the $COLUMNS and
$LINES variables are automatically filled in.

On many remote xterm sessions, they aren't.

Does anyone have any idea where to start figuring out what is wrong, and
what I can do to correct it?

My quick work-around is to resize the window, then call "eval `resize`",
but I would like it to be automatic.

TIA,

Dave in Largo, FL

Write the error output of the hidden script to a file that was removed
before the script ran. If the file exists after the script exits, pop
it up and show the contents to the user. If the file doesn't exist
after the script exits, everything is fine.

Unless you have built it yourself from source, then they will be in

Problem with XP Pro at work.

2009-10-13 Thread J. David Boyd

This is killing me, and I need some help trying to find out what is
happening.

I'm using XP pro at work, and I've installed Cygwin on my computer
(Lenovo laptop).

Lately, when I reboot, the computer gets as far as "Applying computer
settings", and sits there. For hours. Tech Support takes it, destroys
my old profile, creates a new profile, and it works.

Then, my cygwin Xserver can't be started. (I didn't realize that the
cygwin installer wrote anything to my profile. Hardware settings,
maybe?).

So, then I run setup.exe again on the Xserver parts, and everything is
fine and dandy.

Until I reboot again.

Wet hair, lather, rinse, repeat.

I don't think it is cygwin, because there is other software that I have
installed.

How do I prove 'conclusively' that it is NOT cygwin causing this
behavior. Without going back to tech support multiple times to
re-profile my computer.

To me, this machine is worthless without cygwin running on it. It is
really only being used to read my mail (Outlook Exchange), and
administer remote linux machines.

Any ideas? Any at all (well, non-destructive, please).

Dave

Have you checked the simple things first? Did all the cygwin files get
copied over? Check file sizes on the directories, and see if you really
have everything.

You might try installing cygwin onto your laptop and desktop first, then
synchronizing them, or maybe only synchronizing your home directory, and
manually keeping the rest updated.

My 2 cents...

I have cygwin running on, oh, about 6 machines, and all I really keep
synchronized is my home directory. That way I can run emacs gnus
anywhere, or check emacs erc, or whatever, and be happy.

I've had up to 3 -v's, with much attendant verbosity, but the program still
hangs at the same exact spot everytime. I'll do it again, and capture the
output, and see if it makes any difference in what I see.

No, I'm not. But for arguments sake, I'm going to try them and see if I get

ssh and a particular client

2006-04-19 Thread J. David Boyd

I'm having trouble using cygwin and ssh, connecting to a particular client of
ours.

I can connect okay using ssh clients from remote machines, including my linux
box at home, and PUTTY connects okay from a dos shell also, but, when I
connect with ssh under cygwin, I see this:

Last unsuccessful login: Wed Apr 19 15:40:46 GRNLNDST 2006 on ssh from
b$"$ð=ôð(  p
Last login: Wed Apr 19 15:55:05 GRNLNDST 2006 on ssh from ("
ð=
And the terminal just hangs.

When I've captured this to an output file, I see:

Last unsuccessful login: Wed Apr 19 13:35:33 GRNLNDST 2006 on ssh from
b$"$ð=ôð(—  pp
Last login: Wed Apr 19 15:33:13 GRNLNDST 2006 on ssh from ˆ("„ð=˜

So, it almost seems as if the ^Q is the problem. Except that ^Q means start
transmission, not stop, and no key presses get me out of being stuck, except
for ^D to exit the session.

Any ideas of where I should start looking?

TIA,

What is Cygserver?

Cygserver is a program which is designed to run as a background service.
It provides Cygwin applications with services which require security
arbitration or which need to persist while no other cygwin application
  is running.

The implemented services so far are:

  - Control slave tty/pty handle dispersal from tty owner to other
processes without compromising the owner processes' security.
--

To me, this sounds like it controls the 'fork'ing of items, but I can't argue
(too much), as I don't know for certain.

Or, could it be that something we (us that have had the problem) call from our
.bashrc or .profile might be calling something that bounces off the cygserver
controlling mechanism?

I don't know. I had actually rebooted many times before, after trying
different things. It was only after changing the setting in the .conf file
that the problem disappeared. However, time will tell. I don't recall having
done anything to make it show up, so maybe it will be back.

I don't see that option anywhere in GNUS, but maybe it is. I can always do
that manually, though, which works also. Thanks for the heads up, I never

fork problem

2006-04-05 Thread J. David Boyd

Since yesterday, (and, _of course_, I vehemently deny changing anything in my
system), I've been plagued with

bash: fork: Resource temporarily unavailable

and an unadorned bash prompt.

If I type exit:

Sometimes it continues on to show my regular bash prompt, which leads me to
think that some call in my .profile failed.

Sometimes, though, typing exit actually exits.

Sometimes, if I just wait, the startup continues and my expected prompt shows
up.

What would cause a fork to be temporarily unavailable?

I don't think this has worked since Cygwin went from XOrg to XFree, or vice

Sure, a totally valid point on Unix or Linux. But on most cygwin installs
that I know of, there is only one user, and if that user (me, for instance),
did something that stupid, oh well...

But then again, this is Cygwin, and how many _other_ people are going to be on
this machine? I have '.' in my path, as I like to keep different scripts that
apply to certain directories in the affected directory.

more in insert and copy from clipboard

2005-08-05 Thread J. David Boyd

Is there some setting that tells Cygwin to use/not use the windows clipboard.

For the longest time, I have been merryly cutting and pasting between firefox,
notepad, a bash shell, emacs, etc, all using ctrl-insert and shft-insert.

Sometime in the recent past, this no longer works. I can cut and paste
between all of my cygwin programs no problem, but there is no communication
with the windows side of things.

Did I turn off something somewhere. I've perused the docs some, but haven't
found anything worthwhile yet.

I use Cygwin under WinXP, and when I start X11 apps remotely off of my

just some?

What kind of connection are you using?

You aren't running the cygwin x-server, probably.

It is in the \cygwin\usr\X11R6\bin folder, and you start it from the command
line with startxwin.bat.

You might need to modify it before it opens an xterm to add in an xhost
command, but it seems to work right out of the box for me.

I use the cygwin xserver 8-9 hours a day, five days a week, while others in my
office use Reflection-X, etc, and other costly programs.

I think cygwin xserver works faster than anything I've seen, so give it a try.

I made an icon on my desktop that calls C:\cygwin\usr\X11R6\bin\startxwin.bat,
modified to open 4 xterms, and it works great.

I had this problem on my home machine over the weekend. I went into setup and
told it to re-install everything.

When I was done, it worked.

Certainly not an elegant solution, but I had the time to let it re-install
everything.

What's in your cygwin.bat?

I got the lastest snapshot, dumped it all into /, overwriting
what was there, but I see no changes in printing.

Where are the docs on this?

What I'm doing is ctrl-leftclick in the window, and then
select Print Window. I read somewhere, I believe, that I
needed to have my PRINTER environent var set to point to my
printer on the network. I'd like to validate my assumptions,

setup.exe and column dividers

2005-05-06 Thread J. David Boyd
Does anyone know where, in what file, the information for setup.exe is
stored as it pertains to the column dividers?

At some point in the past, I did 'something' so that all I see in the
window is the current version. I have to move FAR to the right, and drag
back the column divider, 6 or 7 times, until I can see all the pertinent
fields at once in the program window.

I've tried looking through the source code, but didn't have any luck, as I
only had time to give it a quick perusal.

Any ideas how to fix this problem?

I remember having some problem like this. To get around it (I am the only
user on this machine), I added the line

. $HOME/.bashrc

to the very end of /etc/profile. It's probably not the 'right' way to do it,

If no one has replied to this before I get to my work machine, where I have
been running Cygwin for years, I can send you a reply, and show you what my
.profile and .bashrc are set to, as well as some of my aliases.

Quickly though:

The two environment variable settings in XP are ones that are global, for all
users, and user specific.

If you have installed software that everyone that logs on to that machine can
use, you set the environment in the global section.

Conversely, if software has been installed that only one can use, you set the
environment in the specific user section.

Anything you have set in the XP environments (global or user) will be
inherited when you start Cygwin.

You can set environment variables in the cygwin.bat file, or you can put them
in .profile or .bashrc.

Sometimes, there are some funny rules about the system reading .profile and
.bashrc, but for the most part, I set almost all of my environment in .bashrc,
and I don't have any problems.

Right click on the icon and check the properties. Make sure that the shortcut

Oops, you are absolutely 100% right.

I knew that, as that's what I've done in the past.

I didn't mean install, I meant download, and then zip and burn, and
then install.

Good thing there's many sets of eyes here!

Thanks,

After you have a working installation on any computer, you can zip and
copy the C:\CYGWIN directory. It is totally self contained, and
should work fine anywhere.

Be forewarned, the CYGWIN directory can be very large, if you install
everything.

ed is postively included with Cygwin. It is just not in the default install.

Start setup, and go look in the editors section.
