Pine bug in cygwin?
I'm seeing weirdness in pine under cygwin. I can normally send and receive mail just fine. When I try to send a large file as an attachment I get two error messages displayed. During the transmission the status bar displays: Encoding Error "Interrupted system call" then after a second or so it displays: Mail not sent. Sending error: 421 SMTP connection went away! I'm sending and receiving mail using smtp-server=127.0.0.1/novalidate-cert inbox-path={127.0.0.1/ssl/novalidate-cert}inbox (there's some ssh port forwarding going on as well). I tested the identical setup from linux and pine worked fine there. I can receive large attachments fine, it just seems to have issues while sending. I tried against pine 4.58 (the current binary shipped with cygwin) and the latest 4.64 version (which I built myself) and both showed the same behavior. Re: 1.5.18: Problem launching URLs from Pine

Bash documents that if SHELL is not set in the environment, then bash populates it as an unexported variable with the full pathname of the current user's login shell (sure enough, editing /etc/passwd affects what SHELL contains). > Presumably this is > handled by Bash itself in such a way that getenv > doesn't see it; is that > in itself a bug? No - there are two namespaces in a POSIX shell - shell variables, and environment variables. By default, assigning to something that is unset only makes it a shell variable, export is what you then use to move that variable into the environment space. The only way in POSIX to remove something from environment space is to unset it, but bash also has export -n to keep the current value while pulling it out of the environment. All variables are seen by subshells, but only environment variables are seen by child processes. The syntax "export foo=bar" is shorthand for "foo=bar; export foo", both creating the variable and putting it in the environment; POSIX requires this syntax, but older shells did not support it. Since SHELL already exists as a shell variable, a simple export SHELL in your ~/.bash_profile will add it to the environment, without changing its value from what it inherited as bash started, or from what bash populated it with from /etc/passwd. -- Eric Blake -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://cygwin.com/docs.html FAQ: http://cygwin.com/faq/

Presumably this is > handled by Bash itself in such a way that getenv doesn't see it; is that > in itself a bug? Shells have two categories of variables: internal and exported (there are official shell category names for them, but they escape me at the moment). The exported variables are propagated to child processes; the internal ones aren't. Usually, setting a variable in the shell puts it in the "internal" category, unless the user explicitly "export"s it. Bash sets "$SHELL" automatically, presumably to indicate what shell the user is currently running. The fact that it doesn't export it may or may not be a bug. I'd say "not", since, if the user *does* have SHELL set in the bash shell's parent environment, you wouldn't want any process launched from bash to see "/bin/bash" as the value of the SHELL instead of whatever the user put there originally. Spent some time on this last night and have now got to the bottom of it. It seems that, in Bash, if I don't explicitly set my SHELL environment variable, % echo $SHELL returns /bin/bash, but stdlib's getenv("SHELL") returns null. Pine uses getenv("SHELL") to figure out how to execute external apps. Explicitly setting SHELL to /bin/bash allows Pine to work. Hope someone else finds this useful! 1.5.18: Problem launching URLs from Pine
Hello, I've come across a problem with Pine under Cygwin. I've tried this with the stock Cygwin version of Pine (latest available from Setup: 4.58-1), and have also compiled up the latest version (4.63) and had the same result. I've also tried version 4.60 on Solaris and could not reproduce the problem. I'm trying to use the "url-viewers" setting in my .pinerc to launch an external app to handle urls supplied in emails. However, I cannot get anything to work. At the moment I've set url-viewers = /home/ant/bin/viewUrl in my .pinerc where viewUrl is a 1-line script as follows: echo $1 >> /tmp/viewUrl.log When run from the command line this (obviously) works fine. However, running it from Pine by hitting Enter on a URL and answering 'yes' to the 'View selected URL "http:"', Pine reports "VIEWER Command Completed", but nothing is added to the log file. On Solaris this works fine; the log is updated. Running Pine with -d 9 (highest debug level) I get the output below (only relevant bits shown). I presume the problem is somewhere in the open_system_pipe method in pine/osdep/os-cyg.c, but my C and/or Cygwin internals knowledge is pretty limited. If anyone's get time to take a look, it'd be much appreciated. This confirms my guess based on a quick glance at the code -- there's an open() call missing the BINMODE specifier. I'll try to release a new version soon. On adding one address to a new address book in pine (i.e. when .addressbook and .addressbook.lu do not yet exist), I get these errors after saving the addition with CTRL+X: Addressbook has changed unexpectedly, need to resync... Resetting address book... These two occur one then the other, about three times. Then finally pine says: [Index file .addressbook.lu inconsistent...remove it and restart Pine] In this case, the inconsistent file is what Pine's just generated. > I think I see the problem, anyway. Yes, my home dir is mounted in textmode: $ mount C:\cygwin\bin on /usr/bin type system (textmode) C:\cygwin\lib on /usr/lib type system (textmode) C:\cygwin on / type system (textmode) c: on /cygdrive/c type system (textmode, noumount) I regret I don't yet have an opportunity to remount in binary mode. Cygwin pine addressbook problem
Dear all, I cannot make the address book work with Pine 4.58 for Cygwin, downloaded with the entire Cygwin package today and running under Windows XP Service Pack 2. If I copy over my old Pine 3.x address book from a Unix system, or if I create a new address book from scratch in Pine, it complains the .addressbook.lu is out of sync. Re-generating it with pine -create_lu .addressbook fullname-with-lists-last gives a segmentation fault. I've tried copying the Unix address book with and without the .lu file. Of course, when I generate a new address book from scratch, there is initially no .lu file. So the problem cannot be due to different versions of Pine (3.x vs 4.x), but must be with Cygwin pine's use of the address book and/or .lu files. Thank you for any advice. I haven't tested Cygwin pine extensively, but everything else about it seems fine so far. I don't have any other firewalls enabled. fhandler_socket::close() tries to circumvent problems with unexpected data loss which can occur, if an application exits without having waited for the closesocket() call being successful. The problem with the latter is, that there's no way to find out. Therefore Cygwin lingers on closesocket(), even with non-blocking sockets. I don't know if that helps but you could try to build a Cygwin DLL which only lingers if shutdown hasn't been called. I tried it with ssh and it seems at least not to disturb ssh operation. Pine 4.58 for Cygwin takes a very long time to close a certain IMAP INBOX
I don't know what's wrong, but can't reproduce with the same versions of PC-Pine and Pine for Linux. I have 5 IMAP accounts. The main INBOX is fastmail.fm. The others are incoming-folders=PostaccessLite {mail.postaccesslite.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED], PostaccessLite-fredlwm {mail.postaccesslite.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED], Bluebottle {mail.bluebottle.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED], MyRealBox {imap.myrealbox.com/ssl/user=xxx}INBOX When I switch from one of the PostAcessLite accounts to another, no matter if they're empty, have a single message, or more, Pine stays at the "Closing folder foo" for a very long time, like 30s to 1 minute, and then opens the one I select. I have all latest packages on XP Professional SP1 with all updates, and use NTFS. Since PostacessLite doesn't seem to allow new users to create accounts, I'm willing to let Eduardo log in mines. Problems with cut/paste in Pine 4.58 and rxvt 2.7.10
Hi, Recently I noticed that when I am using pine with the WIN32 rxvt behavior my mouse does not select or paste text correctly. In my pine configuration I have enable-mouse-in-xterm so the cut/paste functionality is accessed by pressing the shift key. This works fine in the X version of rxvt and in my xterm. So I imagine that I have something wrong in one of my configuration files. I included the output of cygcheck as well as my pinerc and Xdefaults configuration. [ANNOUNCEMENT] Updated Pine-4.58-1 [IMPORTANT]
Hello, A new version of Pine has been uploaded to a server near you. This message contains very important information that you should read before you upgrade. Pine4.58 is a bug release version. The main point of this release is to fix a security hole found in all previous versions of Pine, which is exploitable. An exploit was posted in Bugtraq, so you should upgrade. If you try to upgrade by downloading the source code of Pine and building it yourself, that WILL NOT work. The program will build correctly, but upon executing it, it will corrupt all your data (folders and addressbooks). You need to patch Pine before building it. The patch is included in the source code (as downloadable from the cygwin mirrors using setup.exe, not from the main Pine site). That patch also fixes the crashes found in the distribution of uw-imap and other tools. The patch for c-client was given to me by Marc Crispin. I would like to thank him for sending me this modification. If you don't want to deal with the above, simply upgrade to Pine-4.58-1 from any mirror of Cygwin using the setup program and enjoy this rock solid and powerful e-mail program. To update your installation, click on the "Install Cygwin now" link on the http://cygwin.com/ web page. This downloads setup.exe to your system. Then, run setup, fill in all of the options, and make appropriate choices on the "Select Packages" screen. You'll need to select the Mail category to see Pine and Pico. If you have questions or comments, please send them to the Cygwin mailing list, <http://cygwin.com/list.html>. *** CYGWIN-ANNOUNCE UNSUBSCRIBE INFO *** If you want to unsubscribe from the cygwin-announce mailing list, look at the "List-Unsubscribe: " tag in the email header of this message. [ screenshot available at http://www.math.washington.edu/~chappa/pine/cygwin/PCygPine4.58.gif] Dear Victor, The place to report bugs in cygwing application is the cygwin mailing list (cygwin at cygwin punto com). Version 4.58 is *not* a supported version in cygwin. As you must have noticed, the last release of Pine for cygwin was 4.55 (under the 1.3.X world), not 4.56, not 4.58. That is because during that version of Pine, cygwin was in version 1.3.X. Having said that. None of the supported versions, either, (built under Cygwin 1.5.X) work under Cygwin 1.5.X. Please read http://cygwin.com/problems.html, so that you learn how to report a problem with a cygwin application. I am trying to look into this issue, and I am afraid that I will have to build Pine in a 32bit world rather than upgrade it to the 64bit world, which seems like a lot of work to make (e.g the size of off_t is bigger than the size of unsigned long in the 64bit world. To adapt this to the c-client library is non trivial for me). I do not have a connection to the internet at home still, probably until next week, so I can't make all tests that I want to make yet. I still have to research this issue further. When I have understood all the problems involved I will try to come up with a solution. At this moment I don't understand much of the problem. Given how much stuff is going on in my life today, don't hold your breath for it. Please keep this discussion within the cygwin mailing list. I have Bcc'd my reply to the pine-info list for courtesy. [ANNOUNCEMENT] Pine-4.53-1 Released
Hello I have packed a new distribution of the popular e-mail client Pine. Version 4.53 is the stable release of the 4.5X series. This is the first release for Cygwin in this series. Here's a quick summary of what's new in it. Further details can be found from the main screen of Pine by pressing "R" (to see the Release Notes) or by going to http://www.washington.edu/pine/changes.html * Extended thread support (fancy thread interface). * Rudimentary support of character set conversion. * Extended filter/roles functionality. * Cygwin port is official. This means that no more patches are needed to build a version of Pine suitable for cygwin. All you need to do is to unpack the source code and execute the command "./buildcyg cyg" from the pineX.YZ directory (You still need a patch to be able to "fix" some bugs found while running Pine with colors in the default cygwin terminal. This patch is already applied in this release). As usual, more documentation on how to run Pine under cygwin can be found in the file /usr/doc/Cygwin/pine-4.53-1.README. If you find any problem running this package, please report it to the cygwin mailing list ([EMAIL PROTECTED]). *** INFORMATION ON UPDATING CYGWIN *** To update your installation, click on the "Install Cygwin now" link on the http://cygwin.com/ web page. This downloads setup.exe to your system. Then, run setup and answer all of the questions. In the US, ftp://mirrors.rcn.net/mirrors/sources.redhat.com/cygwin/ is a reliable high bandwidth connection. In Germany, ftp://ftp.uni-erlangen.de/pub/pc/gnuwin32/cygwin/mirrors/cygnus/ is usually pretty good. In the UK, http://programming.ccp14.ac.uk/ftp-mirror/programming/cygwin/pub/cygwin/ is usually up-to-date within 48 hours. If one of the above doesn't have the latest version of this package then you can either wait for the site to be updated or find another mirror. The setup.exe program will figure out what needs to be updated on your system and will install newer packages automatically. If you have questions or comments, please send them to the Cygwin mailing list at: [EMAIL PROTECTED] . This includes ideas and comments about the setup utility or Cygwin in general. pine can't find .pinerc
I've recently started having trouble with pine. I don't use it that often and only noticed the problem when I recently started it up and it asked if I wanted to move the old sent mail to a backup directory. Regardless of whether I say yes or no I get the following error message: Error saving configuration in "/home/ar63/.pinerc": No such file or directory This has worked fine in previous months. The file is there. It is actually read when pine is started (the configuration values are all set). The error message appears to occur when pine tries to write the file back. The .pinerc_debug file that is generated seems to verify this. It contains: reading_pinerc "/home/ar63/.pinerc" Read 14749 characters: but later on write_pinerc(Main) Error writing /home/ar63/.pinerc : No such file or directory I thought it might be a permission problem, but I can write to the file from the console and from a Windows app. Any ideas? [ANNOUNCEMENT] Updated Pine-4.44-3
Hello!, I have updated the version of Pine to 4.44-3. This version tries to fix problems detected with Pine when using the cygwin terminal. I am *VERY* interested in knowing any problems that are found when running Pine in different terminals, so PLEASE report them to the cygwin mailing list. In that way I can work on them before version 4.50 be released (coming soon, but don't know when). This will be the last release of the 4.44-X series. The problems fixed are the following: - The cygwin terminal has a bug that does not allow Pine to use a scroll region, although the cygwin terminal advertises such capability. As far as I understand a fix will come in future versions of Cygwin, but for now we change the method that we use to write in the screen in order to avoid this bug. - The cygwin terminal scrolls automatically when a character is written in the lower right corner, which makes the screen look messy when Pine uses colors (this does not happen in the "black and white" screen). A workaround within Pine was found for this too. More information relevant to this release can be found in the file /usr/doc/Cygwin/Pine-4.44-3.README. To update your installation, click on the "Install Cygwin now" link on the http://cygwin.com/ web page. This downloads setup.exe to your system. Then, run setup and answer all of the questions. In the US, ftp://mirrors.rcn.net/mirrors/sources.redhat.com/cygwin/ is a reliable high bandwidth connection. Sure enough, I changed all my mount points to binary and the pine problems went away. I don't think I have any real reason to run with text mounts anyway so this should be fine. Very cool! The diagnosis of your problem is correct. Your problem comes from the fact that you have chosen "DOS" over "UNIX". You will need to change it "unix". This is one of the symptoms of the error. Your addressbook should not be working either. Pine needs those "\n", over "\r\n". Please notice that this may require you to restart Pine from scratch (new .pinerc, .addressbook, etc). Re: pine dumps core on exit
The local mail files that you view with pine need to be on a filesystem mounted with "--binary". Otherwise when pine rewrites the headers, you get DOS line termination, which ends up eating characters out of the beginning of each message body (since pine seems to use a seek+rewrite strategy for the header updates). Evidently it notices after a while and aborts, but by that time your messages have been chewed on a bit. You can force the file back to Unix line termination, fix your mount point, and you should be all set. pine dumps core on exit
I just updated to the lastest Cygwin and figured I'd try pine. It looked to be working well until I exited, at which point I got this error: | Problem detected: "header size inconsistent". | Pine Exiting. | Aborted (core dumped) ... and pine exited, leaving my INBOX kind of corrupted. This appears to have something to do with ctrl-M's at the end of some lines in mail folders that pine creates... or something. I'm not clear on exactly what's happening. For instance, sending an email in pine will create a "sent-mail" folder, and the "do not erase this message" bit at the beginning of the folder has Ctrl-M's, but the rest of the folder doesn't. I can see how this might confuse pine. Anyone else seeing this? Any ideas what's going on? When I install Cygwin I choose "DOS" as the default file type but I've never known what that actually *does* (and I probably have no reason to choose it); I guess it's possible that my troubles relate to whatever setting results from that. -- scott evans :: www.antisleep.com -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Bug reporting: http://cygwin.com/bugs.html Documentation: http://cygwin.com/docs.html FAQ: http://cygwin.com/faq/

*** Jim.George ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) wrote today: :) I am hapily running Pine under Cygwin however I have a problem. Great! :) So my questions are :) :) 1) what is the command to pipe the email to an external viewer under cygwin :)Pine? You need to have [X] enable-unix-pipe-command enabled in your configuration. If you are using the bash shell, however, this is not the only requirement. The problem is that bash does not export the SHELL variable. It must be exported manually. If this is your case, simply add export SHELL to you ~/.bash_profile file. The file /usr/doc/Cygwin/pine-4.44-1.README shows you an alternative solution to this problem. I hope you have read that document. This problem is specific to the bash shell, not to Pine. :) 2) can this even be achieved with this version of pine? :) 3) can the maintainer update the help screen? Missing feature in Pine
I am hapily running Pine under Cygwin however I have a problem. I wish to use festival to have my mail 'read' to me. This is achieved by piping the email to a perl script written by someone on the festival list. This is where my problem lies. Although the help screen shows that the pipe command is '|' when I press this key Pine tells me that this is not a valid key for this screen (with the email open). So my questions are 1) what is the command to pipe the email to an external viewer under cygwin Pine? 2) can this even be achieved with this version of pine? 3) can the maintainer update the help screen? using pine to run links to view url's
Hi, I know this may be off topic, but I've selected links as my web brower in pine (using the full path - /usr/bin/links), but when I go to view a url from pine, it just returns that it has viewed it, but it doesn't run links. If I then quit pine, there is an error on the console saying it cannot find the path, here's the weird bit, If I run the exact path that It says's it cannot run, links works fine with the selected url. I know the setup it correct for pine, as I use pine and links at home on my system (custom built linux box) and it works fine, which is one of the reason why I posted, Is there something else that I have missed or have to get it to do that is specific to cygwin? Is there a :) [simple|quick] explaination for this requirement? Hello Chris, This is what happens. Pine needs to know your shell when it executes shell commands, for this, it tests to see if the SHELL variable is set. I am running the bash shell, and somehow, even though the SHELL variable is set, Pine does not pick it up. When Pine does not know which shell you are using from the SHELL variable, then pine assumes that you are using csh, hence you need to fake a csh shell, and that's the reason for that command. I haven't tested if this trick works (or does not) under tcsh. I would appreciate if you let me know what you find in this respect. [ANNOUNCEMENT] New Package: Pine
The 'Pine' package is now available via setup.exe Pine is a console e-mail and newsrweader. Among other features, Pine provides: * Support for IMAP, POP3, (E)SMTP, NNTP and MIME. * Color support under rxvt. * An easy to use editor, called Pico, or the ability to use your own editor. * Online context sensitive help. * More than 90 configuration options to tune up Pine to your liking. This is the first Cygwin release. To update your installation, click on the "Install Cygwin now" link on the http://cygwin.com/ web page. This downloads setup.exe to your system. Save it and run setup, answer the questions and pick up 'Pine' from the 'Mail' category. You may need to click the "Full" button if it doesn't show up. Note that downloads from sources.redhat.com (aka cygwin.com) aren't allowed due to bandwidth limitations. This means that you will need to find a mirror which has this update. In the US, ftp://mirrors.rcn.net/mirrors/sources.redhat.com/cygwin/ is a reliable high bandwidth connection. In Japan, ftp://ftp.u-aizu.ac.jp/pub/gnu/gnu-win32/ is already updated. In DK, http://mirrors.sunsite.dk/cygwin/ is usually up-to-date. If one of the above doesn't have the latest version of this package you can either wait for the site to be updated or find another mirror.
