cannot install from local disk with latest setup.exe-2.249.2.2

2002-06-13 Thread Dr. Volker Zell

Hi

I usually install packages in two steps. First I download them and then I install from
local disk.
The latter does not work for me with setup.exe-2.249.2.2.

setup just keeps my disk spinning when it comes to the Installing... screen.
I cannot even press the Cancel button, it's not reacting anymore.
Nothing is written to the logfiles.

I have to use the taskvier to kill setup.

My setup is NT4-SP5

The latest working setup in my scenario was setup.exe-2.218.2.9

To update your installation, click on the "Install Cygwin now" link on
the http://cygwin.com/ web page. This downloads setup.exe to your
system. Once you've downloaded setup.exe, run it and select "XFree86"
and then click on the appropriate field until the above announced
version number appears if it is not displayed already.

Note that downloads from sources.redhat.com (aka cygwin.com) aren't
allowed due to bandwidth limitations. This means that you will need
to find a mirror which has this update.

In the US, ftp://archive.progeny.com/cygwin/
is a reliable high bandwidth connection.

In Japan, ftp://ftp.u-aizu.ac.jp/pub/gnu/gnu-win32/ is usually
up-to-date.

In DK, http://mirrors.sunsite.dk/cygwin/ is usually up-to-date.

If one of the above doesn't have the latest version of this package
you can either wait for the site to be updated or find another
mirror.

Please send questions or comments to the Cygwin/XFree86 mailing list at:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] . If you want to subscribe go to:
http://cygwin.com/lists.html I would appreciate if you would use
this mailing list rather than emailing me directly. This includes
ideas and comments about the setup utility or Cygwin/XFree86 in general.

If you want to make a point or ask a question the Cygwin/XFree86 mailing
list is the appropriate place.

[ITP] tzcode: The time zone package

2003-11-10 Thread Dr. Volker Zell
Hi

I would like to contribute and maintain the timezone package:

 * http://www.twinsun.com/tz/tz-link.htm

a public-domain time zone database which contains code and data that
represent the history of local time for many representative locations
around the globe. This package contains the zic time zone compiler,
the zdump timezone dump routine, and various timezone library routines.
These functions deal with variations in the time zone rules in the world.

Here is the setup.hint file:

sdesc: "The time zone package."
ldesc: "The public-domain time zone database contains code and data that represent the
history of local time for many
representative locations around the globe. It is updated periodically to reflect
changes made by political bodies to UTC
offsets and daylight-saving rules.

Each location in the database represents a national region where all clocks keeping
local time have agreed since 1970.
Locations are identified by continent or ocean and then by the name of the location,
which is typically the largest city
within the region. For example, America/New_York represents most of the US eastern
time zone; America/Indianapolis
represents most of Indiana, which uses eastern time without daylight saving time
(DST); America/Detroit represents most of
Michigan, which uses eastern time but with different DST rules in 1975; and other
entries represent smaller regions like
Starke County, Kentucky, which switched from central to eastern time in 1991. To use
the database, set the TZ environment
variable to the location's full name, e.g., TZ=America/New_York."

What are the details in config.log ?

Try running configure with set -x

I think this has nothing to with my package shell script.

[ITP] gnuplot: A command-line driven interactive function plotting utility

2003-11-24 Thread Dr. Volker Zell
Hi

I would like to contribute and maintain the gnuplot package:

 * http://gnuplot.info/  (Homepage)
 * http://sourceforge.net/projects/gnuplot/  (Download location)

Ciao
  Volker

Here is the setup.hint file:

sdesc: "A command-line driven interactive function plotting utility."
ldesc: "Gnuplot is a command-line driven interactive function plotting utility
for UNIX, MSDOS, VMS, and many other platforms. The software is copyrighted
but freely distributed (i.e., you don't have to pay for it). It was
originally intended as graphical program which would allow scientists
and students to visualize mathematical functions and data. Gnuplot
supports many different types of terminals, plotters, and printers
(including many color devices, and pseudo-devices like LaTeX) and is
easily extensible to include new devices. [ The 'GNU' in gnuplot is
NOT related to the Free Software Foundation, the naming is just a
coincidence (and a long story; see the gnuplot FAQ for details). Thus
gnuplot is not covered by the Gnu copyleft, but rather by its own
copyright statement, included in all source code files.]

Gnuplot handles both curves (2 dimensions) and surfaces (3
dimensions). Surfaces can be plotted as a mesh fitting the specified
function, floating in the 3-d coordinate space, or as a contour plot
on the x-y plane. For 2-d plots, there are also many plot styles,
including lines, points, lines with points, error bars, and impulses
(crude bar graphs). Graphs may be labeled with arbitrary labels and
arrows, axes labels, a title, date and time, and a key. The interface
includes command-line editing and history on most platforms."

Hi

Please upload:

mv man-1.5k-1.tar.zip man-1.5k-1.tar.bz2
--- cut here -

Can somebody please remove my previous version man-1.5m2-1 from the
distribution. Some users posted problems with ESC output sequences.
Although this version is not the latest version available on the net
it incorporates a couple of patches from the Red Hat people (see below).

I would also mark this version as test release and let Christophers version
be the latest stable version for a while.

The following is from the package README:

--

Upgrade to the latest version man-1.5k-12.src.rpm found at

 o http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/development/SRPMS/

This version includes almost all of the fixes found in the above rpm
archive. Some of them are not relevant for cygwin.

More details about the individuell bugs can be found under the URL

 o http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=X

where X represents the numeric bug id.

Changelog:
==

* Thu Oct 09 2003 Adrian Havill <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 1.5k-12
- force utf locale with jnroff (#105764)
- don't let awk in makewhatis scan files that aren't man pages (#105594)

* Wed Oct 01 2003 Adrian Havill <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 1.5k-11
- Use UTF-8 in makewhatis when searching for non-English versions of the
  phrase "NAME" in man pages
- add "-o" option to makewhatis to specify an alternate whatis db location

* Fri Aug 08 2003 Adrian Havill <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 1.5k-9
- cleaned up apropos script bugs (#97006)
- merged all apropos changes into one cleaner patch

* Thu May 22 2003 Jeremy Katz <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 1.5k-7
- fix build with gcc 3.3

* Mon Feb 10 2003 Adrian Havill <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 1.5k-6
- added patch for korean (#83934)

* Thu Feb 06 2003 Adrian Havill <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 1.5k-5
- removed bad argcat patch which made bogus grep queries (#82684)

* Mon Jan 13 2003 Adrian Havill <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 1.5k-2
- bump version from j to k
- adjust patches to reflect upstream integration

Cygwin specific changes:

 o added m and 8c to the default man sections list, cygwin has man pages
   in directories /usr/share/man/man8c and /usr/X11R6/man/manm
 o fixed italian man page
 o added /usr/X11R6/man:/usr/local/share/man:/usr/local/man to the default
   manpath in makewhatis
 o postinstall script adds symlinks from man to manpath for binary and
   manpage

Additionally the following things have been changed since the interim
version man-1.5m2-1:

 o The following two lines in man.conf

   NROFF/usr/bin/nroff -c -mandoc
   PAGER/usr/bin/less -isrR

   seem to fix the output of ESC sequences

!!

Certain versions of the FHS recommend putting formatted versions of

 /usr/.../share/man/[locale/]manx/page.x

into

 /var/cache/man/.../[locale/]catx/page.x.

The keyword FHS in man.conf will cause this behaviour and is now the default.
Explicitly given catdirs override. See comments in the man.conf file.

I would like to ask other package maintainers to remove /usr/.../share/catx
directories from their packages, as man.conf can be edited by the user and
will not be overwritten by the next version of the man package.

!!

The problem was it's doing the test in the source directory and not in the build
directory. Also in my case it worked because if it cannot find gnuplot in that
directory it just calls gnuplot along the path and I already had gnuplot installed
under /usr/local/bin. Maybe it's a good idea when building packages to not include
/usr/local/bin and friends in the path.

Please fetch new versions as usual.

Look at the comments from the Makefile below. It seems there have been configuration
errors with that directory structure. The /usr/share/zoneinfo-posix directory is
actually
the same as /usr/share/zoneinfo. Maybe we should skip the creation of the posix subdir
in the other_two makefile rule.

# If you always want time values interpreted as "seconds since the epoch

# In earlier versions of this makefile, the other two directories were

# For example, with posix_right under the earlier scheme,
# TZ='right/Australia/Adelaide' got you localtime with leap seconds,

Which zoneinfo.cc and tzfile.h do you mean ? From the cygwin source ?
I don't find a zoneinfo.cc file in the cygwin source. There is a localtime.cc so.

Your're right. When I delete all references to

localtime.o strftime.o asctime.o and difftime.c

from the Makefile everything still compiles fine and even works when creating
a symbolic link /usr/local/etc/zoneinfo to /usr/share/zoneinfo. As you stated
the current cygwin dll looks in /usr/local/etc/zoneinfo for it's zoneinfo files.

If we change the following in /winsup/cygwin/localtime.cc it should work without the
symlink.

A first step would be to point TZDIR to /usr/share/zoneinfo. And no, cygwin doesn't
depend on the tzcode package now. It's just that the above TZDIR would make more sense

DESCRIPTION:

WordNet is an online lexical reference system. Word forms in WordNet are
represented in their familiar orthography; word meanings are represented
by synonym sets (synsets) - lists of synonymous word forms that are
interchangeable in some context. Two kinds of relations are recognized:
lexical and semantic. Lexical relations hold between word forms; semantic
relations hold between word meanings.

This package has a command-line and a Tcl/Tk interface included.

[ITP] xemacs: A powerful, highly customizable open source text editor and application development system

2003-12-12 Thread Dr. Volker Zell
Hi

I would like to contribute and maintain the xemacs package:

 * http://xemacs.org/ (Homepage)
 * http://ftp.us.xemacs.org/ftp/pub/  (Download location)

and also the accompanying packages xemacs-sumo/xemacs-mule-sumo:

 * http://xemacs.org/Develop/packages.html(Homepage)
 * ftp://ftp.xemacs.org/pub/xemacs/packages/  (Download location)

I haven't uploaded the packages yet because there are 3 minor problems
which I would like to discuss.

 o In the xemacs package there are two files in common with the standard emacs
   package

 /usr/bin/b2m.exe
 /usr/bin/rcs-checkin

   How should I deal with them ?

 o Also xemacs ships with a copy of etags/ctags which collide with the following
   files from the ctags package (they also have different command-line options)

 /usr/bin/ctags.exe
 /usr/bin/etags.exe

   and if ctags gets updated to the FHS also the following man pages will collide

 /usr/share/man/man1/ctags.1
 /usr/share/man/man1/etags.1

   How to deal with this issues ?

 o The two sumo packages are just the complete prepackaged elisp infrastructure
   for running xemacs. xemacs-sumo is about 22MB and xemacs-mule-sumo about 5MB
   in size !! Everybody could just download them from the original download
   location (see above) and untar them in the right lisp load path. The only
   advantages of having them as cygwin packages are: setup compatible and
   the right location for unpacking is in place. The size is what worries
   me.

What do you think ?

Ciao

2003-12-17 Thread Dr. Volker Zell
Hi

I would like to contribute and maintain the xemacs package:

 * http://xemacs.org/ (Homepage)
 * http://ftp.us.xemacs.org/ftp/pub/  (Download location)

and also the accompanying packages xemacs-sumo/xemacs-mule-sumo:

 * http://xemacs.org/Develop/packages.html(Homepage)
 * ftp://ftp.xemacs.org/pub/xemacs/packages/  (Download location)

This build uses the openldap-devel package just ITP'd. So you have to
download that one first before trying to build this beast.

* ATTENTION

The xemacs-sumo* packages are about 22 MB each
xemacs-mule-sumo* about 4.8 MB each
Actually it would be enough to download the xemacs-[mule]-sumo-src*
packages as the packages without -src are the same without the cygwin
readme.

xemacs-21.4.14about 15  MB both

* ATTENTION

Please give it a try.

See the following for included features:

[ITP - shared libs] openldap: Lightweight Directory Access Protocol clients and libraries

2004-01-02 Thread Dr. Volker Zell
Hi

I would like to contribute and maintain the LDAP libraries and clients
from the openldap package. Gerrit (thanks a lot for your tip) pointed
out that the previous problem with my shared build could be a permission
problem. He was right, the dlls had 644 after installation and couldn't
be loaded. After changing it to 755 everything was ok. So this time we
have a shared build and the distribution is also split up in different
packages see below:

 * http://www.openldap.org/(Homepage)
 * http://www.openldap.org/software/download/  (Download location)

The libraries are needed for example to LDAP enable xemacs.

A happy new year

[ITP] XmHTML: A widget capable of displaying HTML 3.2 conforming text

2004-01-16 Thread Dr. Volker Zell
Hi

I would like to contribute and maintain the XmHTML package:

 * http://www.xs4all.nl/~ripley/XmHTML/   (Homepage)
 * http://www.xs4all.nl/~ripley/XmHTML/dist/  (Download location)

This package can be used for example by the *grace* package for
displaying it's online documentation. Right now grace uses lynx in a
console window to display it's documentation.

There are also a couple of other (not yet cygwin) packages out there
which could benefit from this widget (see the documentation for XmHTML).

Ciao

On my system I have a /usr/local/share/config.site file with the

That's why I didn't notice this. Thanks for review. Maybe now we can get

I don't understand this either. The strange thing is when I start xemacs
from the temporary installation directory it works. Debugging paths gives:

/usr/local/src/xemacs-21.4.14/.inst/usr/bin/xemacs -debug-paths -q

Jari>   http://tierra.dyndns.org:81/cygwin/sgrep/sgrep-1.92.1-1.tar.bz2

Hi Jari

 o From the cygwin specific README:

Build instructions:
  unpack sgrep-1.92.1-1-src.tar.bz2
if you use setup to install this src package, it will be
 unpacked under /usr/src automatically
  cd /usr/src
  ./cygbuild*.sh all

But the build script is sgrep-1.92.1-1.sh

 o The packaging list claims that the sample sgreprc file is located under

 /etc/defaults/etc/sample.sgreprc

but it actually is under

 /etc/defaults/sgreprc

Is this the right location anyway ? and shouldn't it get copied to
/usr/share in a postinstall script ?

 o The man page says that sgreprc would be searched under /usr/lib/sgreprc

Can we patch this to /usr/share

 o There is still an error in the build script:

When I run bash ./sgrep*sh -v all I get

-- cygbuild.sh 2004-01-26 1.230 http://cygbuild.sourceforge.net/
-- Wait, examining environment and preparing variables
./sgrep-1.92.1-1.sh: line 505: [: -eq: unary operator expected
./sgrep-1.92.1-1.sh: line 505: [: -eq: unary operator expected
-- Extracting /tmp/sgrep/sgrep-1.92.1.tar.gz

Other than that, it seems to work fine.

Maybe the emacs maintainer can unbundle the conflicting files from the

[Review - Almost GTG] TeXmacs: A scientific wysiwyg Editor and Interface for Computer Algebra Systems

2004-02-02 Thread Dr. Volker Zell
Hi Andreas

The package is GOOD TO GO from my side if the following issues get
addressed. For your convinience I include a small patch at the end of
the mail which fixes the following

 o remove empty /etc/postinstall directory
 o Typos and missing/wrong requires in setup.hint/TeXmacs.README

I did a rebuild from source with gcc-3.3.1 and latest cygwin-1.5.7 and
it builds fine although your README states that gcc-3.3 doesn't work.

What errors do you get ?

I tried both your binary version and my gcc-3.3.1 build version with the
tutorial you mentionend in your announcement

 o http://www.fmi.uni-passau.de/~seidl/texmacs/tmtour.html#3

and everything works fine except with both versions I get the following error on
the first startup. (Which doesn't seem to do any harm. The second time I
start texmacs it doesn't show up anymore)

One last thing I noticed. Your version depends on cygiconv-2.dll but
when I configure from source iconv support doesn't get included:

Grepping for iconv_open symbol

shows that configure *SHOULDN'T* find iconv support.

I'm not sure, but my question is how your version includes iconv support
as you can see from the cygcheck output. Doesn' t your configure step
fails with the same error messages as mine ?

Yap, XFree86-prog is not a runtime requirement.

Try the following the texmacs executable has a bin extension:

find $tmp/$PKG-$VER/.inst -name '*.exe' -o -name '*.dll' \
   -o -name '*.bin' | \xargs cygcheck | \
   sed -e '/\.exe/d' -e 's,\\,/,g' | sort -bu | \

Well the package builds fine OOTB when having installed all the necessary
packages. The problem is only that iconv support isn't properly detected
by configure. But I moved this discussion to the main list.

I build this especially for grace, which right now shows it's help with
lynx in an xterm window. It looks quite nice with XmHTML.

   This is necessary because neither XmHTML nor libhelp are available

   use the internal helpviewer.

Will do that too.

DESCRIPTION:

A graphics library for fast image creation

CYGWIN NEWS:

* Build with cygwin-1.5.7

* Routine upgrade to 2.0.21

gd NEWS
===

What's new in version 2.0.21?

* Version 2.0.21 adds a gdImageCreateFrom*Ptr family of functions which make it
convenient to load an image in any GD-supported format directly from memory.
* The new gdNewDynamicCtxEx function was added to support the easy implementation
of the above functions and to correct a design problem which made life unpleasant for
those passing in memory not originally allocated by gd to the gdNewDynamicCtx function
by provoding a way to specify that gd should never free or reallocate a particular
block of memory. The gdNewDynamicCtx function and its relatives, although still
exported for ABI compatibility, are now deprecated except for internal use, in favor
of gdImageCreateFromPngPtr and its relatives.
* Version 2.0.21 includes a new patch from Ethan A. Merritt to correct a bug in
the conditional compilation of support for symbol fonts in gdft.c. Symbol fonts should
now work correctly. Thanks to Mr. Merritt.
* Version 2.0.20 restores the gdFreeFontCache function, an undocumented function
added in an earlier release which now simply calls gdFontCacheShutdown for backwards
compatibility. This repairs build problems when compiling PHP against the latest gd.
* Documentation improvements.

What's new in version 2.0.20?

* Version 2.0.20 restores the gdFreeFontCache function, an undocumented function
added in an earlier release which now simply calls gdFontCacheShutdown for backwards
compatibility. This repairs build problems when compiling PHP against the latest gd.

What's new in version 2.0.19?

* Version 2.0.19 restored extern declarations for the gd font pointers
inadvertently removed in 2.0.18.

What's new in version 2.0.18?

* A Win32 binary distribution of "bgd.dll," built with mingw32 and tested with
win32 versions of the demo programs as console applications, is now available.
* Semicolon rather than space used as the default separator of alternative font
file paths in gdImageStringFT, for better compatibility with Windows and other
environments where spaces are common in paths.
* The circletexttest demo no longer fails to compile when JPEG support happens to
be absent.

What's new in version 2.0.17?

Minor compilation and packaging problems with 2.0.16 were corrected. If 2.0.16
compiled without errors for you, then you don't need to upgrade to 2.0.17.

What's new in version 2.0.16?

* Thread safety for freetype text output. Background: all gd functions were
already thread safe, as long as only one thread manipulates each image -- except for
gdImageStringFT and gdImageStringFTEx. This is because of a shared freetype font
cache. Sharing the cache between images is worthwhile, so "configure" now detects
pthreads and uses it to wrap freetype text output in a critical section if available.
There is also critical section support under WIN32. Those who wish to be strictly
thread-safe should call the new function gdFontCacheSetup before allowing any thread
to use freetype text calls. Otherwise this function is automatically invoked on the
first use of freetype, with a very small but real chance of a race condition.
* gdImageSquareToCircle performs a "polar coordinate transform," returning a new
image in which the X axis of the original has been remapped to theta (angle) and the Y
axis of the original has been remapped to rho (distance from center).
* gdImageStringFTCircle wraps text in a circle around a specified center point.
This function takes advantage of gdImageSquareToCircle. The result is very smooth,
although it takes some time to compute. Thanks to Steve Bassi for sponsoring this work.
* gdImageSharpen, contributed by Paul Troughton. Thank you.
* Christophe Thomas corrected gdft.c to include freetype header files in the way
that is now mandatory in freetype 2.1.6 and above.
* Gustavo Scotti fixed a mem

It's ok, it's modelled after the aspell-en files. You'll find the reason
in the README file for the package.

DESCRIPTION:

The time zone package

CYGWIN NEWS:

* compiled with cygwin-1.5.7

* man pages are now in /usr/share/man

* fixed some mkdir warnings during installation

* added missing requires: gawk pdksh

* removed tz-date.exe and tz-date.1 as /usr/bin/date now (since cygwin-1.5.7)
  handles the new timezone format (e.g.: TZ=Europe/Berlin)

  There is a script tzselect in /usr/sbin which asks the user about the time zone,
  and output the resulting TZ value to stdout.

* removed libtz.a since the functionality is included in cygwin

* moved /usr/share/zoneinfo-leaps to /usr/share/zoneinfo/right and
  /usr/share/zoneinfo-posix to /usr/share/zoneinfo/posix as on Linux
