Definitely not as I got it running on several Win95 machines on our institute.
Does the name resolving work? Does it run locally? Without the -fp stuff?

I can't get links in graphics mode to work in a cygwin/xfree

We're using Cygwin/XFree86 4.1 at work to connect to a linux server and
find it *extremely* reliable: Over 20 boxes and no such problems yet.

What message do you get? Are these problems timeouts, refused connections, do other
things work from a box when it can't connect? What else is running on these boxes?
There's a lot of "utilities" and virus scanners out there which severely damage
the network stuff on Windows.

To me, it looks more like a network problem than a cygwin problem.

Fancy it's one of the programs fired up by startxwin.sh shooting down the X-server.
Most probably it's a program that can't be found due to a wrong $PATH environment
or an incomplete installation.

We could use a good tool for writing these X keymap files (I'm talking
about xkb support, not xmodmap), but I think this is not the way to go
with a word processor. I often have multilingual text, and If I'm in
a, say, Russian part of my file, I want the keyboard to behave
differently than in a, say, Esperanto or German or Czech part. In MS
Word (which I have to use for a certain project, otherwise I'm fine
with emacs and LaTeX), I can map key sequences to characters, a
feature I really like and which would solve these problems for most of
us. Missing it keeps me from using Oo for that MS Word project and
other things apart from playing around with it. It could be done nicer
than in Word, of course, so that certain mappings would only be valid
for certain languages.

For me, that autocorrect function would already be sufficient if it
could be told to immediately replace in the middle of words as well,
so I could simply say 'c -> cacute and untick a 'whole word only'
checkbox. There would be several projects I'd use Oof for immediately.
But I don't know where I should post this and I don't have
the time to dig into the sources of Oo myself.

What is SP2? I have experienced speed problems with win98 which went away
after
- disabling virus scanners running in background like McAffee
- disabling ATI Graphic utilities (disable and remove from registry)
which do next to nothing but eat up to 85% of the resources.

Hope this helps

I think I've tracked down the problem to a ATI graphic card utility called
ati2evxx.exe. As it seems, it doesn't do anything but eats a lot of system
resources. After throwing it out, at least the two machines I've tried started
networking with cygwin at normal speed. Anyway, thanks a lot for your help.

Nothing of the sort. 100MBit LAN. At home, a much slower notebook with much less RAM
performs perfectly ok on 10MBit. Right now, I'm logged in from home over a DSL line

IP. Novell stuff (IPX) performs normally, so does ping and VNC.
everything else (ftp, xdm) is terribly slow.

The login screen appears *very slowly* and after quite some time.
Login, wait two minutes for your desktop (just fvwm) to appear.
Open a terminal, wait for the window, wait for the shell. And so on ...

Please help: XDMCP connection dog-slow

2002-03-22 Thread PD Dr. Edward Wornar

Hello,

sorry if this is a bit off-topic but I was unable to find information in
the mailing-list archives/Howtos.

I have a linux server (Mandrake 8.1) and several Windows clients
running cygwin/xfree-4.1 (plus one linux client). On some of the win98 clients,
XDMCP is *extremely* slow so it literary takes minutes to get the login screen
and log in. They all are in my /etc/hosts file, they
seem to have exactly the same protocols running, but while some react
very snappily, others are extremely sluggish. Maybe anyone can give
me a clue what might be wrong? (I am not familiar with
TCP/IP interna, so I'm not capable of interpreting the output of
tcpdump but I can mail it to anybody willing to help.)

Unfortunately, not for me: It says
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/xkbcomp: Permission denied
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/xkbcomp: Permission denied
and falls back to pre-XKB keymap.

/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/xkbcomp.exe complains about not finding libX11.dll.
Is that because I have XFree4.1?
