Yes it would, many governments are turning to Linux and other freeware. 
Many huge companies make heavy use of Linux and and freeware, suddenly 
losing this would have a massive effect on their bottom line and 
possibly enough to impact the economy as a whole. Independent software 
developers are a significant part of the economy as well, and most 
politicians do not want to associate themselves with the concept of 
hurting small business. Universities and other educational 
institutions will fight anything that resembles what you have described 
tooth and nail.

To think that this kind of technology would be mandated by a government 
is laughable. Nor do I believe there will be any conspiracy on the part 
of ISPs to require to in order to get on the Internet. As it stands now 
most people are running 5+ year old computer and windows 98/me, I doubt 
this is going to change much because for most people, this does what 
they want (minus all the security vulnerabilities, but with NAT 
appliances those are not even that big a deal). There is no customer 
demand for this technology to be mandated, there is no reason why an ISP 
or vendor would want to piss off significant percentages of their 
clients in this way. The software world is becoming MORE open. Firefox 
and Openoffice are becoming legitimate in the eyes of government and 
businesses, Linux is huge these days, and the open source development 
method is being talked about in business mags, board rooms, and 
universities everywhere.

The government was not able to get the Clipper chip passed and that was 
backed with the horror stories of rampant pedophilia, terrorism, and 
organized crime. Do you honestly believe they will be able to destroy 
open source, linux, independent software development, and the like with 
just the fear of movie piracy, mp3 sharing, and such? Do you really 
think they are willing to piss off large sections of the voting 
population, the tech segment of the economy, universities, small 
businesses, and the rest of the world just because the MPAA and RIAA 
don't like customers owning devices they do not control?

It is entirely possibly that a machine like you described will be built, 
 I wish them luck because they will need it. It is attempted quite 
often and yet history shows us that there is really no widespread demand 
for iOpeners, WebTV, and their ilk. I don't see customers demanding 
this, therefor there will probably not be much of a supply. Either way, 
there is currently a HUGE market for general use PCs that the end user 
controls, so I imagine there will always be companies willing to supply 
them.

My primary fear regarding TCPA is the remote attestation component. I 
can easily picture Microsoft deciding that they do not like Samba and 
decide to make it so that Windows boxes simply cannot communicate with 
it for domain, filesystem, or authentication purposes. All they need do 
is require that the piece on the other end be signed by Microsoft. Heck 
they could render http agent spoofing useless if they decide to make it 
so that only IE could connect to ISS. Again though, doing so would piss 
off a great many of their customers, some of who are slowly jumping ship 
to other solutions anyway.

organization's (NFA) suspense account with the Central Bank of Nigeria

consolidation of a foreign corporation in the North America was 100 % correct. I had 
told in 1991 that the consolidation of Ahlstrom Machinery, Inc. (AMI) was a failure 
and unsuccessful. During the 1990s many Ahsltrom Machinery's businesses were sold and 
the remaining parts were or are to be sold to Andritz from Graz, Austria in 2003. I 
had told them the truth in 1991 and I was punished by the executive management of AMI 
and people spread bad stories about me and my thesis in 1991 although it was graded as 
very good by one Professor. The Business Development Director of Ahsltrom Machinery, 
Inc. even forced me to change my thesis tosome extent by threatening to prevent me 
from graduating as the Masters of Science in Industrial Engineering and Management in 
April/May, 1991. His name is Markku Perkola. Itwas just my academic work.They had even 
told to my so called birthmother that my thesis was!

correct and right. So my thesis was right and these people of Ahsltrom Machinery and 
many people of Varkaus, Finland, just wanted to hurt me and destroyed my careerat my

So as the conclusion I was punished by people of Finland after I had told them the 
truth,which was my job in the first place. I was hired to write my thesis on their

and torture people who have been charged with no crime (let alone 
convicted), and allows lawmakers to pass draconian legislation that 
will lead to more abuses of civil rights. It is a very simple trick 
of the mind with devestating consequences - once you allow yourself 
to forget that a particular person or group of people are actual 
human beings, who live, experience joy, and suffer just as we all do, 
any sort of brutality in support of a cause (revenge, justice, 
freedom, etc.) becomes relatively easy to inflict.

I had communicated to my own voicemail box at BellSouth There are too
many Jews in the White House. and I had said Play this music to your
grandparents (I played loudly some 3rd Reich songs .. so I must
conclude that Jews attacked me started from the summer of 1999 after I
had told to the Kremlin and on the USENET that Boris Berezovsky and
other Jews must be fired etc ... Madeleine Albright was involved
against me as I correctly noted in my notes earlier (they used the
word insertation technique (basically word were placed to the phone
conversation between me and my seperated spouse on December 15, 1999
as I have noted ..)

They tried to kill me ... really KILL ME ... how interesting ... so

You seem to forget there are people in the left who are for 
restructuring of society so that there is much less government,
and less power centralised in the hands of a few.

uucp still lives in pretty much every UNIX and UNIX-like operating 
system and it moves email well. 

It would be a simple matter to get uucp going for a mail link with
some sort of over the wire encryption. It has been about ten years 
since I've dealt with this, but as I recall each email message went
via a uux of rmail (uux was remote command execution - sort of like
rsh over a modem). There is no particular reason why one couldn't
encrypt before sending and decrypt upon receipt. Mostly just a
modification to sendmail.cf and a modification to rmail. Of course
this really just solves the problem for a single hop uucp link.

People did a lot of multi-hop uucp. I remember trying to work out the 
right bang path to get mail across the country to people I was 
corresponding with quickly. Of course, you end up with the same 
problems. Traffic can be monitored. multi-hop uucp means there are 
lots of very easy interception points. This doesn't really get around 
the whole problem, uucp is just something different to monitor, still 
subject to traffic analysis, and you'd need real end to end 
encryption of email messages via something like pgp/gpg anyway. 

The only thing a large multi-hop uucp network would give us is that 
it would allow us to do is decentralise and control our own mail 
paths, so monitoring would be harder, in that sense. In a large 
enough network, one could even use a different path for each message. 

I wonder if my old Telebit modem still works. It is in a box somewhere...

software-based security technology.

If you have not been personally identified, then your antagonist must either
personally identify you or monitor all possible remailer network entrances.
Monitoring all remailer network entrances can be done, but it is not for the
weak of wallet.  Even large governments do not have unlimited resources --
they must pick and choose their targets, rather than trying to go after
everyone.  The Soviet government and its puppet states encouraged people to
turn each other in just so they didn't have to pay for 50% of the population
to watch the other 50%.  Large resources != infinite resources.

 Killing remailers will be a by-product of regulating the net.

Regulating the net to this extent would be a huge undertaking.  Trying to
regulate dead-tree publishers to this level would be a large undertaking, a
task not likely to be accomplished without a lot of debate in Congress --
and there are many fewer dead-tree publishers than net publishers.

The only way this could be done would be to attack at the large ISP level,
which then brings up First Amendment issues along with common carrier
issues.  It could be done, but it would likely take a covert operation so
large that:
* It could only be funded by a government or other large body; and
* Which would likely come to light relatively quickly (three can keep a
secret, if two are dead).

(Covert operation in the sense of staging many events that use the net in
the process of harming people, as in using remailers for staging
terrorist-like attacks for the express purpose of scaring the American
public into abrogating their First Amendments rights unilaterally on the
net.)

When you were asked where were all the supposed wealthy freedom fighters
in communist controlled regimes, you came back with Osama bin Laden.

Tim's point, which many seem to have missed, is that by design a tool that
enforces the privacy, anonymity, and pseudonymity of a women striving for
equal rights in Afghanistan can also be used by the Taliban in their quest
to track down and kill Afghans who converted to Christianity and are now
preaching the Word.  Tools are tools -- the uses are what we make of them.
If you don't want to create tools that can be used for evil, then you must
forgo the making of tools.

Crypto anarchy is coming -- we had best prepare for it, lest it overwhelm
us.  In the end, I believe that it will result in more freedom for more
people, by restraining those in government from doing any silly thing they
like to us.  Although I see many people complain about the excesses of
corporations, in about every case I can think of the harm they did was
enabled by the collusion of government officials.  If you can restrain the
actions of government (by crypto anarchy, voting the rascals out of
office, or whatever), you will generally improve the amount of freedom
people have to live their lives.

Radio is cheap and hot.  When was the last time you heard a Libertarian
sentiment on radio (except talk radio).  The closest I've heard are the
"Vote 
Freedom" ads by Charleton Heston.

Last week I heard 2 different ads for Indiana LP candidates on a station
that plays hip-hop, alternative, and pop music (Radio Now FM 93.1, Emmis
Communications).  The ads were paid for locally, IIRC.

 Would a public PRNG (Yarrow?) server be of any use? I suppose it could be
 done as a proof-of-concept, or as another source of entropy for an internal
 PRNG... and the trust issue could be dealt with just as you deal with the
 Intel PRNG. IMO, the bandwidth would be the limitation here; an intranet
 (LAN) PRNG might be better.

You'd need to prtect the numbers thus served; they'd be no use if
an ethernet snooper could pick them up, so the distribution channel
should be at least encrypted. (SSH and SSL could both be used).

 I'm asking this because I think that a big problem with PRNGs is that the
 application is the more difficult part - securing the seed file, making sure
 the entropy into the system is correct, and any other issues I can't think
 of right now. It would be easier to set them up *correctly* on one computer
 than on many, and at most the randomness-demanding applications on the
 client computers could "fall back" on the server.

Interesting idea! You could take it further and put some decent hardware
RNG(s) on the server as well.
